30: the problems of a 20 year old
After their trip had ended, they all went back to their regular lives and enjoyed their last few months as a high schooler by testing their freedom before having to face the harsh realities of the adult world. They were no longer 19, they're 20 by then.
The week after their trip ended, Seungmin was preparing for a trip on his own to Canada. He wanted to see what life was like there before officially moving there for school. While in the middle of packing his luggage there was a knock at his door. "Come in!" He called out.
"Hey, it's me," Seoyun said as she peeked her head from the door.
"Hey," he replied as he continued to fold his clothes.
"Leaving already, aren't you a bit too early?" She said as she came inside and set food that she brought on a table.
"No, I'm just visiting to take a tour of the campus," he said.
"So you're really leaving," she ran her fingers along the edges of the bookshelves and tables she passed by and stared at the countless pictures he had of his family and friends.
"I'll still come back here, you know that," he turned to see her sitting on his bed.
"But it won't be the same," she sighed. "When did you decide to do this?"
"My parents encouraged me to apply to foreign schools a long time ago. I only agreed because I didn't really think I would get accepted into any of them, and after every rejection letter I received from all the other schools I felt more relieved. Relieved that I wouldn't have to leave, but then the letter from Toronto came," he explained.
"And you just had to go, I get it," she paused, "So why didn't you tell me any of this before? That must've been a lot of stress on you. I just can't imagine how much you suffered during those times."
"Both, Yongbok and Chan, know. They're the ones I looked to whenever I was having troubles, I wasn't alone, Seoyun," he sat on the bed next to her.
"I'm here for you, you know that right?" She took his hand.
Surprised by her sudden actions, he looked at her with a stunned expression. She didn't look at him, she stared at his empty suitcase while she bit down her lip to restrain herself from saying words she didn't want to say. "I know, but since we were in the same situation I couldn't look for you for help. I hope you understand what I mean."
"Don't turn this around on me! There's a difference between you and me, my connections with people are far weaker than yours, I've only been here for less than a year while you've been with them most of your life. If you think I'll miss you, they'll miss you more, even if they don't say it."
"That still doesn't change the fact that you might have to study abroad as well," he said. "How's that going by the way?"
"How do you think it's going?" She asked with a blank expression.
"Well other than the fact that you're the top student in our school you have a good record with all of your other accomplishments. If I can get in with my grades and dance then you can get in any school you go for. Considering that, you have many options to chooses from, which means that you're more likely going away as well," Seungmin said.
"Spot on answer, Seungmin. I just got my last letter from all the schools I applied to," she pulled out the thick letter from her purse then laid it on his lap. "Open it."
Seungmin followed her request then began to read the first sentence which would define the rest of the letter. "You got in, congratulations," Seungmin said with a half-smile. "Is it a bad thing? You don't look too happy about it."
"It's the best thing. I got into my dream school after working so hard for it. I'm so happy right now I could cry," her voice trembled. "I have everything I ever wanted." Her voice was weak but she didn't cry, she was too busy thinking about other things.
"I'm proud of you," he said. "You deserve this, you've worked hard and now life is rewarding you."
"Thanks, now I just have to tell my parents," she half-smiled.
"You haven't told your parents? Who else knows?" Seungmin asked in surprise.
"Just you, maybe Yongbok? I'm not sure If he's seen any of the letters," she admitted. She wanted to share her happiness with the people closest to her, she wanted to tell them so badly so they can be as proud as she was but telling them could bring mixed emotions that she just wasn't ready to deal with.
"Why did you tell me?" He asked.
"I wanted to be as brave as you. I wanted to decide on my future with a clear mind like you did and be able to tell others, I guess you could say I was jealous," she laughed as she stared at the letter for reassurance.
"If you don't want to leave you don't have to. SNU is still in the top 50 worldwide, just because you got into the top school doesn't mean you have to," he said. She had no answer, all she did was reread the letter over and over again. "You have a choice."
"And somehow I wish I didn't," she folded the letter back then turned to him. "Because if that was the case, I have to choose what I have to leave behind. And I don't want to leave anything behind," she sighed.
"I don't know how to respond to that, Seoyun," he said.
"I wasn't expecting an answer so it's okay. I just needed to say it out loud," she stood from her seat then grabbed her purse off the bed. "I should go and tell my parents about this, I'm sure they'll be happy to hear I'm not a screw-up," she raised the letter.
He laughed then said, "tell me how that goes," as he leaned on his arm for support.
"I will," she reached for the doorknob, "I'm sorry I didn't realize how much you were suffering when I complained about it so much, I should have been there for you," she said then left without looking at him.
"You didn't even say goodbye," Seungmin muttered to himself then continued to pack.
As promised, she called her parents as soon as she stepped out of his house. Her hand shakily dialed her father's office number first, his cold demeanor made him easier to tell news to since he wouldn't say anything at all. "Hello, Mr. Park is busy at the moment how may I help you?" His secretary answered.
"Elaine, it's Suzy Park. Can you tell him to call me once he's not busy?" She asked.
"Of course Miss Park, I'll be sure to tell him as soon as possible. Can I ask what it's about, just in case he asks," his assistant asked.
"Nothing important, I just wanted to update him about college stuff," she laughed through the phone, "Well, you have a nice night Elaine, it was nice talking to you."
"You too Miss Park, have a good day." His secretary said then hung up the phone. When she called her mom it was the same thing, she was directed straight to her mother's assistant to take in the exact same message she gave Elaine. Of course, she told Seungmin, but she was simply too tired to reply to his apologetic texts. So she went to one of the safest places she could go to.
"Hey, what brings you here?" Hyunjin smiled as he opened the door for her. She didn't say anything and just immediately went straight to wrap her arms around his waist then rested her head in the crook of his neck. Hyunjin didn't take his time to hug her tightly as he pulled both of them inside.
"I just missed you," she moved her ear closer to his chest to listen to his heartbeat.
"Is everything okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, everything is alright now," she hugged him tighter.
