Curses- Nick Scratch
You are a witch in love with a warlock at the academy of unseen arts. When he starts dating someone else, you cast a curse that slowly destroys the thing they love most. Months pass and nothing has changed, but you are starting to get sick.
"Hey, (Y/N)!"
You curled your fist under the library table. "Nick."
Nick plopped down into the chair across from you. "What's up, (L/N)?"
You didn't look up, choosing to keep your eyes trained on your book of hexes. "Homework." You replied.
"Sounds boring," Nick sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Say, why don't we go swim in Black Lake? Remember how we used to do that?"
"I don't have time." You flipped a page, but you hadn't read a word since Nick sat down.
"Oh, c'mon, (L/N). It'll be fun! You're going to work yourself to death!"
"My purpose is to serve the dark lord. What better way to do that than be the best witch I can be?"
You glimpsed up and caught an image of Nick rolling his eyes. "We both know that that's complete and utter bullshit."
You finally dared to look up at Nick, with his muscled arms crossed over his sculpted chest, his fiery coal-colored eyes peering up at you over a chiseled chin, his body perfectly relaxed yet on edge at the same time.
You looked back down at the book, ignoring the part of you that wanted to jump out of your chair and race him to Black Lake as fast as you could. "I can't. Sorry, Nick."
Nick huffed. "Fine. I'll just ask Melanie to go."
You snapped your head up. "Melanie?"
"Yeah, Melanie. Unlike you, she actually wants to spend time with me." Nick shot back, raising an eyebrow.
You glowered down at Nick, feeling the tempestuous roar of your dark magic surge like a wave inside of you. "Melanie has the emotional range of a teaspoon."
It was Nick's turn to glare. "Melanie likes me. She's smart and dedicated and pretty, and you know what? I kind of like her too." He leaned forward in his chair, just daring you to get angry or apologize or do something.
You slammed the book shut. "Fine. Go to the lake with Melanie. Meanwhile, I'll be doing something worthwhile with my time." You stood up, ignoring the blood boiling in your veins, and packed up your stuff. Yes, your jealousy was irrational, but Nick had been pulling you in for so long. He was like a magnet, but you were his opposite charge; you knew he would never love you the way you loved him.
You gathered your books and stamped out of the library. Oh, yes, you would be doing something very worthwhile with your time.

"(Y/N)? Are you here?"
Oh, Heaven, not him.
"(Y/N), I came to apologize,"
"Go away," you called weakly, pulled your head away from the toilet.
The door creaked as someone pushed it open. "God, (Y/N). What happened to you?"
You looked up at Nick through the hair plastered to your forehead with sweat, fighting down the waves of nausea that racked your body. "I-I cast a spell," you swallowed. "And a couple hours later I got sick. A-and it just got worse and worse-" you gasped, and threw your head in the toilet as you expelled even more of your stomach contents. The food had been thrown up long before. The only thing coming out now was acrid bile that burned your throat.
Nick laughed shortly. "Oh, (Y/N). Don't you know all magic comes with a price?"
"It's not funny!" You cried, immediately regretting the bile that rose with it. "It wasn't supposed to hurt me. It was supposed to hurt someone else."
Nick frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I cast a hex. To hurt someone. Potentially kill them, if the spell could progress far enough. But it was never supposed to, I figured she would get help before it got too bad-"
"Was it Melanie?" Nick asked, cutting you off. His face seemed darker, anger casting a shadow over his usually jovial features.
You made guilty eye contact with Nick, swallowing down your answer. You couldn't say it.
But he knew.
You looked away.
A warmth suddenly pressed against your side and a hand settled onto your back. "What spell, (Y/N)? Was it in that book?" Nick asked, his breath hot in your ear.
You nodded. "It's on the floor. Over there," you pointed to the fallen hex book that lay open on the floor. "Nick-"
"Don't, (Y/N)." Nick cut you off curtly, moving away to retrieve the book. You leaned into the space where Nick used to be, feeling a chill spread numbly through the space where Nick's warmth used to be. The weight of his anger hung on your shoulders like dumbbells.
"To Hurt the One Your Enemy Loves Most," Nick read the title of the curse, a small snort escaping through his nostrils. "You thought it'd be Melanie?"
"Magic works with intent. Even if she's not, I figured I could make it work..." you replied with a weak shrug.
Nick's eyes scanned the pages quickly. He flipped them back and forth and looked up at down, even trying a revealing spell to see if there were any footnotes denoting any effect the spell might have on the caster, but found none.
"I don't understand..." you murmured after your umpteenth time spilling your stomach. "Why is it doing this to me?"
"You're sure you didn't just catch something? Food poisoning, maybe?"
You shook your head. "No. This feels different. Like it was caused by magic."
A perplexed frown painted Nick's face. Then it morphed into an expression of horror, finally giving way to the telltale crimson of embarrassment.
You frowned. "What?"
"I... think I know why this is happening to you."
"Well? What is it?"
Peering up at you from beneath dark eyelashes, Nick's dark eyes churned. "The spell is supposed to target the person you love most in the world," he repeated softly.
"And?" You asked, balking against the toilet. "What does that have to do with-" you stopped mid sentence. Oh. Oh. Nick swallowed, looking away.
"I'm the person you love most in the world." You reveled softly.
Nick's hand flexed by his side, curling and uncurling into and out of a fist. "It's possible."
A curt laugh escaped from your lips. You couldn't help it. Relief washed over you, warming your chest and almost dispelling the sense of nausea ransacking your stomach. Thoughts of Melanie were far away. She didn't matter anymore; it was just you and Nick.
"Nick, I'm flattered." You grinned.
Nick looked up at you with pained eyes and a defeated posture. "(Y/N), I'm sorry I put you in this position, I didn't want to make things awkward-"
"Why are you apologizing?!" You cut him off. "First off, I was the one who cast the hex, so I should be apologizing to you. That was stupid and petty of me and I was just jealous. Second of all, you're probably the person I love most in this world too."
Relief brightened Nick like a child on Christmas Day, straightening his posture, putting a brilliant smile on his face, and giving him a glow of happiness that seemed to radiate from within. "Really?" He whispered.
"Yes," you responded, a laugh escaping your throat. "Yes, it's true."
"(Y/N), I've wanted this for so long, you have no idea..." a look of adoration and longing cake over Nick's face. "Now that I know I can have you, I promise, (Y/N), to never let you down while we're together. I will spend every second of every day trying to make you happy. You are and always will be the most important thing to me. Whatever I can do for you, I will do-"
You barfed into the toilet.
Nick cringed, backing away slightly. "Sorry. I'll just love you from afar."
Wiping your mouth with the back of your hand, you pulled your head out of the toilet. "That's okay with me." You smiled weakly.
Backing away, Nick continued, "I'm going to go get a nurse, but this is not over," He smiled mischievously. "Just you wait, (Y/N). Just you wait!"
