Authors note

*update just realised I hit 21k, SO THANK YOU*

Thank you for 20K I never expected this book to reach that amount of views. This book was the first book I've ever completed and I learned a lot from writing it. So to commemorate 20k, I decided to write a one shot. So I hope you all like it!

Italics are memories

ØØØØ

The day of Pietros funeral.

AMBER MAXIMOFF. The girl who tried hide her pain from the world. The girl whose childhood was stripped away. The girl whose brother she couldn't save.

It was the day of his funeral. It was sunny and bright exactly what he would've wanted. Amber knew that. Steve had already come to her door knocking asking if she was coming. He got no response.

Wanda was steering clear of Amber and that was obvious, but Amber was glad she was. She couldn't look at Wanda without getting a glimpse of Pietro. She couldn't do it.

She couldn't get dressed without recalling an old memory featuring him. She couldn't eat without remembering that it was his favourite food. It seemed like she couldn't live, because she took that away from him.

Amber stood up shakily and looked into the bathroom mirror. Her eyes were red and puffy, her hair was tangled and unkept. Her face was sunken and black bags lay under her eyes. The girl had lost a huge amount of weight and her bones were quite visable.

She looked above her right shoulder and choked back a sob. Pietro was in the reflection behind her a hand on her shoulder.

Pietro.

The little boy who comforted her when she their parents died. The boy who bandaged her wounds when she fell. The boy who worked mercilessly to earn money for them to eat and have shelter. The boy who helped her through Hydras process.

Was gone.

Because of her.

Amber felt tears trickling down her face, and without a second thought she brought her fist towards the mirror, smashing it to pieces. As fragments fell to the floor, Amber stared straight into the broken mirror and flashed back to a few years prior.

A 10 year old Amber Maximoff smashed the only small mirror they owned, that Wanda kept exclusively in her small corner of the house. She could feel her anger bubbling out of her as the pieces fell to the floor.

Pietro rushed into the small house and kneeled in front of her, "Little one what happened?" He asked soothingly,

"Nobody likes me" She sniffled, "At school, they call me freak. They make fun of you and Wanda",

Pietro ran a hand through her hair. He knew there was something she wasn't telling him, call it brotherly instinct.

"What's that?" Pietro asked, tracing his finger along a dark blue bruise on her cheek.

"Alina from school, she was hurting m-my friend so I told her to leave Ana a-alone and she pushed me and made fu-fun of me" Amber whimpered, now sobbing on Pietros shoulder.

Pietro was enraged, the thought of someone bullying another small kid was horrifying.

"It's ok little one, I'm here" he said calmly, "I always will be there remember that"

The young girl nodded and believed him, for she was his sister and he would never lie to her.

Oh how he lied, he'd said that he would never leave, he said he'll always be there. How wrong Pietro was.

But it's not his fault he's gone, it's not his fault he was protecting his family. None of this was his fault. None.

It was hers.

If she had perhaps created a forcefield or even used her brain, maybe his death wouldn't be an outcome. If she'd maybe stopped the twins before it was too late, maybe they'd both be here alive and not just one, who was full of misery.

Wanda was mad at Amber and she understood why. Amber had killed her twin, the one person who truly understood her, but at least Wanda had Vision to comfort her. Amber? She had no one. She was completely alone in this world.

Clint did attempt to coax Amber out of her room to attend the funeral but had no prevail. He tried everything including having Natasha threaten her, but Amber didn't acknowledge them at all.

As the day came to a close, and the mourners dispersed from the meal held in the compound after Pietros funeral. Amber stared from the window of her bedroom as one by one quinjets left, and the Avengers walked solemnly back inside the now miserable grey building.

She sat on her bed until the moon shone brightly and not a single sound echoed through the facility. Amber stood up and zipped up Pietros hoodie, she picked up her old charm bracelet and slipped it into her pocket.

Amber opened her window slowly, stepping out on to the ledge. She overlooked the training fields, and without another second she jumped off the ledge using her powers to slow her landing.

Once she landed on the grass, Amber flipped up the hood of his hoodie and began sprinting towards the forest. She came to an abrupt stop in front of a grey, polished headstone. Pietros headstone. It was embellished with flowers, and all kinds of decorations.

Pietro would've hated it.

He preferred the simple life.

Amber kneeled on a patch of grass beside the dirt covered grave. Tears were already dripping down her face. All the memories she had with him were rolling through her mind,

"Amber where are you?" A little Pietro asked. Him and Amber were playing hide and seek, and the little girl seemed to specialize in it.

Pietro heard a light hearted giggle, "I can hear you" He said creeping towards their couch.

The giggle occurred again. "I GOT YOU" he yelled pouncing behind the couch tickling the young girl hidden away behind it.

Amber laughed and laughed. Pietro picked her up by her legs and dangled her upside down, until their mother entered the room and yelled at them for their foolishness.

Amber wished she could go back and play hide and seek one more time. It seemed both of them were so innocent.

"I'm s-So s-s-sorry 'Etro" Amber sobbed loudly, leaning over the grave, "I'm sorry I couldn't save you. It should've been me"

"I miss you so much Pietro, I needed you, and you had to leave and that was my fault. I wish we could go back to when we played hide and seek, do you remember that? Mom always used to give out to us for being silly. We always got in trouble but we never cared. Remember our tree in the meadow on the outskirts of town? I remember when you broke your arm while climbing it to show off. You were so stupid. I thought you'd died but now's different, I know you died. I love you 'Etro. That will never change" She cried, letting out all her feelings.

"I'm alone now. It's like I'm floating without a tether, you were my roots in this world. You kept me steady, and now your gone. Wanda seems to be coping, but I-I don't see her anymore. She tends to ignore me, she has Vision now and he makes her happy. Don't get me wrong, I love Wanda but now...I feel like I lost her too. My life is crumbling apart, just like our city did. The team keep trying to understand but they never will. They'll never understand. They can't physically nor mentally." Amber said trying to calm down,

"I can't eat or sleep Pietro. I-I can't knowing that I am the cause of your death, I can't because you haunt my memories and dreams. I can't because you were my lifeline, you were the reason I kept going. And I don't know how long I can carry on for without you here. But I do know one thing, I will never forget you, not now not ever."

And with that last sentence she kissed his gravestone and began her walk back to the tower. The sun was rising and light began to break through the trees.

Amber didn't feel any better but she felt as if a weight was lifted slightly off her chest.
