ix. sunshine

Lorelei groaned at the sound of her alarm clock on her bedside table waking her up for school. Her head stayed hidden in her pillow, her eyes not ready to adjust to the sunlight just yet as she brought her hand out from under her covers to turn off her alarm.

Slowly, she lifted herself into a sitting position in her bed and opened her eyes into a squint. Lorelei brushed a hand through her hair and looked around her room. When she saw Isaac, curled into a ball and covered in blankets on the floor asleep, she rolled her eyes.

"Isaac!" Lorelei voiced, not screaming since it was still early, but loud enough to wake Isaac up. The boy jumped awake and quickly stood up.

"What are you doing?" Lorelei asked and Isaac eased when he realized it was just Lorelei that woke him up. He nervously cleared his throat and moved to stand at the edge of Lorelei's bed to look at her. "Uh, watching... over you." He said and Lorelei held back a confused laugh.

"What?" She asked, some of her laugh escaping with her words. Isaac brought his hand up to rub the back of his neck. "Well, I wanted to make sure you weren't the third sacrifice." He said and hen he turned around and pointed to the floor. "So I made a watch post."

Lorelei pursed her lips. "But you were asleep. How are you protecting me if you're asleep?" She asked and Isaac's jaw dropped. He opened and closed his mouth, trying to come up with an answer before he bent down grabbed one of the blanket he was using throughout the night. "I got tired and I used that blanket you charmed to help you fall asleep. Knocked right out."

Lorelei snorted, finally letting her laugh out. She leaned back into her bed and cackled like a witch—which she was. Isaac rolled his eyes, holding back his own laugh starting because of how contagious Lorelei's was.

Lorelei sighed, her hand going to her heart as he laugh slowly started to die down. She looked up at Isaac and gave him a sarcastic smile. "My hero." She breathed out as Isaac walked towards her. He grabbed the pillow he was using and whacked her.

When their laughter died down, Loreleis brows furrowed, a confused look taking over her face as she looked up at Isaac. "Wait, why are you protecting me? Last I checked, I wasn't a healer, so I think I'm in the clear."

Isaac squinted at Lorelei with an "are you kidding me?" look plastered across his face. "You're a witch that heals people. It could just come under any kind of healer."

Lorelei didn't really think about that. She swallowed a lump in her throat she didn't know was forming and moved her blankets off of her.

"Yeah, well, I'm not gonna be anyone's human sacrifice today, so get ready. We have to go to school." Lorelei said, getting out of her bed. When Isaac didn't move, Lorelei turned to him. His eyes were nervously wide as he opened and closed his mouth.

"Uh... I'm not going today." Isaac said, his hand going back to his neck. Lorelei shook her head at the boy in confusion; it wasn't like he was sick or anything. "What? Why not?" She asked and Isaac looked away from her, putting his hands in his pockets.

"Boyd and I are going to Derek's in about an hour." He said, only confusing Lorelei more. She knew he was alive, but why would Isaac and Boyd need to be there. "Why?"

"To protect him. The alpha pack knows he's still weak." Isaac said, reminding Lorelei. The blonde rolled her eyes. She was a little aggravated with the man over the fact that he was alive the whole time all of them were at the motel and he didn't even text them a heads up that he was alive or anything.

Isaac saw Lorelei roll her eyes and he straightened up. Thinking that she was mad she wasn't invited or included, Isaac quickly spoke again. "You can stop by after school if you want. We could use the help of a witch." He said, smiling widely when he said "witch" holding it'd make Lorelei feel better.

It did help Lorelei feel a bit more included. She straightened her back and rolled her shoulders back, smiling. "I'll be there after school." She said, making Isaac smile.

Lorelei turned to the head of her bed and grabbed the pillow Isaac had just thrown at her. She turned back around to Isaac and threw it right back at him. "Now get out. I have to change."

...

About halfway through the school day, Lorelei found herself on the lacrosse field, laying down as she looked up at the sky.

It was her free period and Coach's conference hour so no one else would be on the field. She loved to lay there whenever she could, letting herself bask in the sunlight. She had sunglasses on and her eyes closed as she listened to the birds in the surrounding trees chirping and the newly autumn breeze.

"Why are you out in the sun?"

She opened her eyes and found Aiden standing above her, his head covering the sun from blinding her eyes. Lorelei gave him a small smile and turned her head so her right cheek was touching the grass. "Last I checked, I was a witch, not a vampire. A girl loves her sun."Lorelei answered pointedly.

She heard Aiden chuckle above her before he moved to sit down beside her. Once he was comfortable beside her—their shoulders touching, he sighed as he looked up at the sky. "My question still stands..." He muttered.

Aiden turned to look at Lorelei, still smiling. "Why are you out in the sun?"

Lorelei scooted a little closer to Aiden, her eyes on the sky, not noticing Aiden's eyes widen at the movement. "Just... makes me feel good." She answered sheepishly. Lorelei giggled, and shook her head.

"Maybe I just need Vitamin D." Lorelei giggled out. Aiden laughed with her, pinching the bridge of his nose. The laughter between them was short—what Lorelei said wasn't that funny anyway.

She sighed once her laughter died down. Lorelei tilted her head so the side of her head was touching Aiden's shoulder and shrugged, her shoulder hitting his. "I've always liked the Sun more than the stars."

She squinted a little as she felt Aiden turn his head to look at her. "It's warmer, nicer,"

"Hotter?" Aiden asked and even though she wasn't looking at him, Lorelei could feel the smirk in his voice. She turned her head to look at him and smiled once she realized she was right—he was smirking.

Lorelei smiled back, feeling a couple butterflies in her stomach flutter around. She nodded; just barely and kept her eyes on Aiden. "Yeah." She admitted. Her voice was breathy and light, making Aiden feel his own heart start to speed up.

Lorelei looked back up, still smiling. "It's just relaxing."

Almost comically, as soon as she finished her sentence, the loud blaring of the school's fire alarm rang through the air. Aiden winced in pain, his hand going up to his ears since the alarm was louder for him. Lorelei rolled her eyes, sitting up. "This is not."

Aiden's eyes widened when he noticed Lorelei standing up and grab her bag. Aiden scrambled to stand, grabbing Lorelei's hand to stop her. "Where you going?"

Lorelei squinted at Aiden. "It's a fire alarm." Lorelei said matter-of-factor. Aiden chuckled, rolling his eyes flirtatiously as he let go of her hand. "When in high school has a fire alarm actually been a real fire?" Aiden asked, not wanting to Lorelei to leave his side. Lorelei rose her eyebrows in amusement, a small smile on her face as she looked at Aiden.

"That's exactly the kind of thing you'd expect a dumbass to say just before getting burned alive." Lorelei snarked. Aiden rolled his eyes, holding back a smile. "We're already outside." He snarked and Lorelei gave him an unamused look. "Better safe than sorry. We can atleast get off the property." Lorelei smiled, going to reach for Aiden's shoulder. "Now, come on."

Just as Lorelei grabbed Aiden's hand, her fingers interlacing with his, Lorelei's entire vision turned white. She gasped and stopped walking as a low echo of electricity crackling echoed through her head.

In front of her, like tunnel vision, was the faint outline of two people. One was kneeled, their hands raised and the other was above them, stabbed by the person under them's hands. The moonlight shined past the outline of the bodies, making it hard for Lorelei to recognize the people even if she tried to recognize the figures by their silhouette's but she still couldn't figure out who they were.

She could recognize that the bodies were in Derek's loft. Which meant that one of them could've been Isaac or Boyd.

The electricity crackling grew louder as the body that was stabbed struggled for a breath of air. Slowly, the crackling stopped as the body's head slowly fell and they stopped struggling, dying.

Loreleis heart sank, her vision slowly coming back to normal as her own screams echoed through her mind.

"Lorelei!"

Lorelei jumped at Aiden's yell, finally breaking out of her vision. She gasped, stumbling a little, but Aiden quickly put his hands to her waist to stabilize her.

"Woah, are you okay?" Aiden asked. Lorelei, still shaken up, started to crazily shake her head. "I- I have to go." She muttered.

She was about to started walking away, but she was still weak from her vision. Her steps stumbled again and Aiden held her a little tighter. "Wait what?" He asked and Lorelei slowly started to face him. Aiden's eyes were nervously wide as he looked her over, trying to see what was wrong.

"Lor, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." He asked, noticing how shaky and pale she was. Suddenly, his back straightened and

"Oh my God. Did you..." Aiden looked around to see if anyone was near them. He saw no one around, but he still leaned closer to her. "Did you just have a vision?" He whisper yelled.

Lorelei struggled meeting Aiden's eyes, answering his question. It was silent between the two of them; Lorelei still trying to figure out who she saw die while Aiden struggled on if he should ask her what she saw.

Before Aiden could, Lorelei shook her head and pushed herself out of Aiden's grasp. "I have to go." She whispered again.

Once she was completely out of Aiden's grasp, Lorelei turned and hastily walked in the direction of her car.

...

Lorelei walked into Derek's apartment urgently, part of her still shaken up by her vision. "Hey, Isaac! There was a fire alarm so I came earl—" Just as Lorelei was about to take the last step of Derek's apartment, Isaac jumped through the air and towards Lorelei from where he was on the kitchen island.

He landed barely a foot away from Lorelei and wrapped an arm around her waist, stopping her from taking her last step. Loreleis gasped, looking to the ground and noticing there was about an inch of water filling the apartment.

"You can't walk there." Isaac whispered. Lorelei continued looking around the apartment until she noticed the wires in the water.

Lorelei let out a small exhale and looked up at Derek who was standing near the windowsill across the apartment from her. "Is this gonna kill him?" Lorelei asked, figuring Derek's plan was to kill Deucalion.

Derek gave Lorelei one single nod. "I hope so."

Maybe it was Deucalion she saw dying in her vision. Lorelei looked around the room. The entire apartment was covered in water, making her brows furrowed. She turned to Derek, confused. "Where do I go?"

...

Derek ended up turning off the electricity so Lorelei could walk across the apartment and find somewhere safe to sit. She ended up sitting criss cross on one the kitchen island with Isaac and Boyd so she doesn't get electrocuted as Derek turned the power back on.

Lorelei had been sitting on the island for about an hour. She looked around the loft and her eyes landing on the generator connected controlling the power. The light was off so the power was off.

"Isn't the light on that supposed to be on?" Lorelei asked, catching the three wolves attention. Derek's back straightened up and his eyes widened once he realized the power was off.
"Yeah."

Isaac looked to Derek, tilting his head. "What does it mean if it's not?"

"Someone cut the auxiliary power." Derek whispered. Boyd furrowed his brows, shaking his head. "What about the main-"

Boyd was cut off by all the lights in the loft turning off. Stephanie, Isaac and Boyd quickly scrambled up from their sitting positions to look around. Lorelei felt her fingertips tingle as she looked to Derek with wide eyes. "Derek... What do we do now?"

Derek slowly turned to Lorelei. She couldn't hear it since she didn't have enhanced hearing, but someone was coming towards them. "We fight." Derek said and the three teens nodded.

Almost immediately, Isaac turned to Lorelei beside him, pointing a parental finger at her. "You." He said, making Lorelei's head whip around to face him, her eyes wide.

"Don't stand in the water. If it comes back on, you'll die." Isaac instructed and Lorelei immediately nodded her head. She couldn't heal like any of them could. "Got it."

The footsteps got closer and closer to the door until Kali came into view in the doorway. Kali smirked at Derek, her eyes in only him instead of looking at the three teens. She walked down the stairs and stood in the water, smirking at the fact that she didn't get harmed.

"Gonna be honest, Derek. When Ennis died, I thought to myself I'd just go for it. Find you and kill you, wherever you stood." Kali said.

"Then I remembered how you surround yourself with these teenagers, hiding behind them, and I thought, what's a girl got to do to get you alone?"

Then, three more footsteps echoed through the hallway. Lorelei's heart sank as she watched Ethan and Aiden walk into the apartment and stand behind Kali, Aiden holding their teacher, Mrs. Blake with claws to her neck.

The betrayal Lorelei was waiting to come, the betrayal everyone warned her about finally hit her. She knew Aiden was part of the alpha pack, but she hadn't seen him actually do anything with the pack.

Ethan and Aiden looked around the room. Aiden's jaw clenched and his chest started to raise and fall faster when his eyes met Lorelei's.

"You and me Derek, or they tear her apart. What do you say? You think you can beat me one on one?" Kali said, making Lorelei finally look away from Aiden and to Kali beside him.

Derek growled at the woman. "I'm gonna rip your throat out with my teeth." His eyes started to turn red and his fangs started to grow. Derek roared, the apartment practically shaking before he ran at Kali.

Isaac, Lorelei, and Boyd immediately ran for the twins to help their teacher. Lorelei, not having any werewolf powers, could not run as fast as the boys. Boyd looked back and realized how far back Lorelei was from him and Isaac.

Boyd stopped running and grabbed Lorelei's arm. He pulled her in front of him, hard enough to get her there fast, but not hard enough to hurt her. As soon as Lorelei was in front of him, Boyd started running, pushing Lorelei with him.

As soon as Lorelei made it safely into the steps, the electricity turned back on, Boyd and Derek getting electrocuted.

Lorelei turned around as fast as she could when she heard the electricity crackling. She turned around so fast, she almost lost her balance and fell into the water with him, but Isaac stuck his arm out, snaking it around her waist and catching her.

"Boyd!" Lorelei yelled as Kali chuckled and the electricity turned off again. Kali turned to the twins and nodded her head to Boyd. "Take him!"

The twins followed Kali's instructions. Aiden let go of Mrs. Blake and walked towards Boyd. They grabbed him and walked towards Kali and Derek. Kali grabbed Derek's weak hands and positioned them so his claws were facing the air.

Lorelei felt her throat tighten and her whole body freeze. Her mind blanked as she tried to come up with a spell. Her mind fought with her as she struggled to think of something. Anything to help Boyd.

Guilt hit Lorelei like a wave as she watched the twins drop Boyd onto Derek's claws. Lorelei took a shaky step back, forgetting there were stairs behind and falling back.

Her eyes stayed glued on Boyd as Kali smirked down at Derek. "I'm giving you till the next full moon, Derek. Make the smart choice. Join the pack... Or next time I'm killing all of you."

Kali walked towards the exit, chuckling when she walked past Lorelei. Once Kali was out of the apartment, Lorelei started to slowly get up. Every limb in her body was weak, her eyes still stuck on Boys no matter how hard she wanted to look away.

She saw it coming yet she still froze. Boyd was dead because of her. Lorelei's throat started to burn from her not letting herself cry, barely even letting herself breathe.

She could see Ethan and Aiden walking towards her in her peripheral vision, but she didn't acknowledge them. Aiden walked right towards her, blocking her view of Boyd slowly dying in Derek's arms.

Lorelei blinked, a single tear falling down her cheek and Aiden frowned. He slowly reached up to touch Loreleis shoulder. "Lor.."

It was like Aiden's touch brought back feeling to Lorelei's body. It wasn't happy. It was anger. Lorelei slapped Aiden's hand away and then slapped him across the face.

The slap stunned everyone in the room, everyone grew quiet as Lorelei pushed him back.

"Get the hell away from me!" Lorelei snapped, her voice was shaky and hoarse as she stared at the boy in front of her. More tears started to cascade down her face as all of the emotions she was feeling started to swirl through her body more and more.

Aiden, his expression clouded with sadness, whispered her name desperately. "Lorelei..." He whispered. Tears continued to well up in Lorelei's eyes, mixing with the fury. "I trusted you!" She spat, pushing Aiden back again.

"I trusted you and you killed Boyd!" Lorelei screamed. Aiden slowly shook his head, his voice cracked as he tried to explain. "I... I had to." He tried to explain.

Lorelei's fingers started to tingle again and she knew her powers were starting to act up over Boyd's death and her guilt. Aiden took another step towards her. Just as he was about to reach for her again, a voice from behind Lorelei made her and Aiden freeze.

"Hey!" Stiles yelled. Lorelei slowly turned around, tears starting to pool in her eyes all over again as Stiles, Lydia, and Cora stood in the doorway.

Stiles gently reached out for Lorelei's hand and pulled her towards him. "Get away from her." Stiles warned Aiden. He pushed Lorelei protectively behind him. Aiden looked back and forth between Stiles's angry glare and Lorelei's heartbroken one.

Aiden, with a heavy heart, finally started to walk out of the loft. His eyes refused to meet Lorelei's, but now Lorelei's were stuck on him.

She stood there, feeling numb and heartbroken, watching Aiden walk away without a backward glance. The weight of betrayal and the fresh wound of losing her close friend collided, leaving her heart shattered once he was gone.

As tears streamed down her face, Lorelei turned to Stiles and wrapped her arms around his waist. In his arms, she let go of the pain, crying into his chest as the boy gently brought his hand to her head, his fingers going through her hair to ease her.
