15 - DOWNFALL
"KAELYN, DEAR, WE'RE SO GLAD YOU'RE HOME," Kaelyn's sad excuse for a mother exclaimed in anguish and relief as the two adults entered the apartment. Beth, Kaelyn, and Peter had been cuddled up on the couch watching all the movies the couple had missed in the last five years. As soon as the pair entered the room, Kaelyn stood up on edge, activating only the portion of her suit that held the spear. According to Caden, they had been disappearing on and off for the last five years and knowing her suspicions, Kaelyn knew that could only mean bad news.
"Kaelyn, honey, put that away, we're your parents," Weston cut in, motioning to the weapon with an exasperated expression.
The redhead shook her head, "What the hell have you been up to the last few days? Caden told me about the people coming through, the whispers of the downfall of S.H.I.E.L.D. Don't come back in here and feed me more bullshit about trying to protect me when I know damn well all you ever wanted was to weaponize me. It's no coincidence that two people desperate to take down one of the most prestigious operations happen to have a daughter that can't be harmed. I have been through enough shit lately, I won't be taking any of it from you."
Her mother looked utterly aghast, but the teenager couldn't give less of a shit. "Kaelyn, I am your mother. I don't care what you've been through, I won't tolerate this behavior from you. Your brother has turned you into some silly conspiracy theorist. We've had friends over, yes, because we continued to grieve those we lost in the blip, to grieve you. I don't know how, after seeing your parents for the first time in five years, you think it is okay to speak to us like this."
Kaelyn noticed Peter had gotten up and was now standing behind her, his hand was on her wrist, but the intention was clearly not to hold her back as his touch was too gentle; it was supporting. Beth had also gotten up to stand by her side, surely giving her parents the bitchiest death glare she could muster. Kaelyn was glad she had everyone besides her; she felt so empty without Beth in her life, but now things could start getting back to normal.
"Oh, bullshit. You weren't grieving me. If anything, you deserved it. You left me alone for six years. We're even now, right? The closest thing I ever had to a parent is dead and you two don't cut it. You can live here, for now, but things are going to be a little different now that I'm back in town, got it? If any shady dealings take place in this apartment, I will be calling Nick fucking Fury himself to take care of it. I don't care what you claim it is, I know damn well you've had shit going on with all kinds of bad people ever since that man representing Adrian Toomes came by five years ago," Kaelyn spat, keeping the white-knuckled grip on her spear, "As far as I know, my parents are dead. No more lies, no more shady shit. Got it?"
"We're not lying to you, we would never--"
"What about when you lied about being dead?" Kaelyn cut off her father before he could finish off his bitter lie. She had her world turned upside down and she was done dealing with things she didn't deserve, "Tony Stark was the closest thing I had to a father, you two can hardly compare yourselves."
Her mother scoffed, "You're being ridiculous but fine whatever you wish to believe. We tried to come back peacefully and welcome you with open arms to see the woman you've become, but instead, you treat us like this. Clearly, leaving you with Caden may not have been the smartest idea since he raised an animal."
"Probably because he wasn't meant to be a father at fourteen years old," Kaelyn spat, "Jesus, I'm so over this conversation. I can't be here with you, I'll... I'll be back."
She shoved her way past her parents and ran out of the apartment, grabbing her key that still hung by the door even after all these years. It had been a long time since she had been to the rooftop, but stepping out into the chilled New York air with the sun just beginning to set felt more like home than the apartment had. It wasn't the same roof since their parents had forced them to move into a larger apartment in a different building, but the feeling was the same. Closing her eyes, Kaelyn took a deep breath and let the wind soak into her skin. Disarming herself, she sat on the edge of the roof, letting her legs hang off. This was much more fun now that she knew if she fell there wouldn't be any damage. She and Tony had spent countless hours testing just how much it took for her to feel pain, but getting stabbed and having it bounce off of her torso pretty much told her everything she needed to know.
"Need a change of view? I know a rooftop much better than this one," a voice interrupted her thoughts -- Peter's voice. "Beth tried to follow you, but I told her it was probably safer for her to just head back to her dorm and I would take care of you. So -- what do you say?"
Peter held out his hand and of course, Kaelyn took it. He held her close as he shot his web into the skyline. Normally, she hated traveling like this, but she wasn't about to take the car across town. With a laugh, they tumbled into a landing on the rooftop of Kaelyn's old building.
"I still can't believe everything that happened just because of this place," the redhead scoffed as she gazed out upon the New York skyline, "We met here, huh."
"Well, technically we didn't meet here, we had classes together freshman year," Peter corrected with a gentle laugh, "This is just where the prettiest, meanest girl in school acknowledged my existence."
"And your biggest secret," Kaelyn stuck out her tongue, "I was not mean!"
"You were mean," Peter laughed, holding the girl close, "You made a girl run laps for two hours because she accidentally dropped you at cheer practice."
Kaelyn scoffed, tossing her hair over her shoulder, "The bitch did it on purpose!"
"Oh, hmm, sure," the boy teased, pressing a kiss to her cheek before she got too angry, "We've been through quite a lot together, huh?"
"We sure have," Kaelyn said with a sigh, "I... I wouldn't trade any of it for the world, you know. I mean, we lost people, we lost ourselves, but those things made us who we are today. Who would I be if I hadn't chased you out of the homecoming dance? Or follow you into an alien spaceship?"
"You have always gone to the ends of the earth for me," Peter spoke with admiration and love in his tone, "I don't deserve you."
"Just don't go where I cannot follow and we will be fine," the girl spoke gently, but there was underlying fear in her voice. She hoped the boy wouldn't pick up on it and thankfully, he didn't seem to notice the shift in tone. "They're up to something, I can feel it. I can't deal with this right now, all I should be worried about is getting to Tony's funeral. I at least owe him a clear head."
Peter sighed, wrapping his arm around Kaelyn's shoulders as she rests her head in the crook of his neck and shoulder, "And we will keep clear heads. All of this can be worried about after the funeral, okay? We'll drive up tomorrow with Beth and see everyone and then we don't have to worry about your parents until we get back. Can you do that for me?"
"I'll try my best."
the lil trip down memory lane made me emo I really love Kaelyn and Peter my babies have been through so much
