ch 3 | Time waits for none
I'm in a beautiful dark abyss. No matter where I look, it's all black. I can't even see myself. I can't feel my body. It's as if I'm floating like a weightless feather. It's so peaceful.
"Eve. Wake up. Open your eyes."
Lucas! He... he is here as well. He is here! Yes! I'll never leave this place.
"Eve. Please. Go back to your life."
"No! I'll not open. You'll leave me again."
"I'm always with you my Eve. I' haven't gone anywhere. Open your eyes Eve. Your life is waiting for you. I'll always be with you, I promise."
"You've already broken one."
"Please Eve. Listen to me. Go and find yourself. Find the Evelyn whom I love. I don't love this coward Evelyn. My Evelyn is strong. She is a fighter who doesn't give up. And you are nothing like her! You are not my Eve."
"No! I am the strong Evelyn whom you love. But... I can't. There's no light. I can't see anything. How can I rise and walk again? I can't without you."
"No Eve. When it's dark around you, burn the fire that's within you. Then you'll not need others to be your light. Wake up Eve. It's time."
"But I don't have any fire left. They are all now ashes. No! I... I can't."
"You can Eve. Maybe the fire is not there anymore but the embers are still there under those ashes. You're still breathing, so there must be a reason. Fan those embers and ignite them. Go back Eve. Become the Eve whom I love and one day, I'll come back to meet my fiery Eve. I've to go now. Just remember, I'm always with you my Eve. I love you."
"No! Lucas! Don't go please. How will I live?"
"By being alive. That's all you need to do."
"No! Lucas!"
I shot my eyes open and a glaring white light blazes my eyes. I shut my eyes off as the light is hurting them while my mind tries to understand my whereabouts. Slowly all my senses get accustomed to the surroundings.
Beep.
Beep.
So, I'm in the hospital. Then Lucas...? No, I need to hurry.
I flutter my eyes open which are now not hurting anymore from the light. I try to move my head a bit and realize that an oxygen mask is attached to my mouth and nose. Taking a deep breath, I raise one of my hands to remove the mask. With slight difficulty I remove the oxygen mask and the fresh air hits my nose.
The cool morning breeze is touching my tired body. I use all my strength to get up. I try once, but my hands can't take the weight. I tear the pipe away from under the tape which is carrying saline for my body. Blood flickers from the hole but all I can think of is Lucas.
I try again, this time balancing my weight on both the hands and legs. A muffled cry comes out of my mouth as I almost sit up. All of a sudden the door opens with a bang.
I look towards the door and saw a known face entering. Her black eyes are filled with concern as she shouts, "E! You woke up?"
Lena Brown, my best friend rushes towards me and holds me by my arms.
"When did you wake up? And what are you trying to do by opening the saline and mask? Has the doctor checked you? Wait, let me call him." She speaks frantically as she tries to lay me on the bed.
"No! Lena, I... I need to go. Lucas is there on the bed. I can't let them take him away from me. No!" I break away from Lena's grip and get off the bed but my legs quiver not letting me to stand and I sit on the floor with a thud.
"Evelyn!" Lena tries to make me stand up. I hold the cold metal leg of the hospital bed for support.
"Nurse! Doctor! Anyone out there? Help!" Lena shouts but all I can think about is Lucas and his cold body on that operation table.
Like a flash, Lucas' peaceful sleeping face appears in front of my eyes. Forcing out all my strength, I stand up as my legs shiver while Lena grabs my arms tightly. Trudging, I put my first step forward but a force pulls me back which makes me sit on the bed.
"Where are you going? Have you seen your condition? You can't even walk properly!" Lena shouts at me making me angry.
"I've to see Lucas. Can't you understand? I've been lying here for a whole day like an idiot! Please, let me go Lena. I want to see him for the last time. Please!" Tears start pooling in my eyes as my hands tremble.
"E... You can't see him now, even if you want to." Lena says as her voice sounds full of sadness.
"What? But why? What shit are you saying? Just stop it and take me to him!" All my bottled emotions burst out in this shrill scream.
"E! I can't! No one can because it has been four months!" Lena shakes me by grabbing my arms.
"It has been four months since Lucas died. It has been four months since he is lying in his grave. It has been four months since you were in coma!" Lena frees me while the doctor comes rushing.
"Miss Brown, why didn't you call us? Please leave the room. We need to check if everything is okay." Nodding her head, Lena leaves the room while a nurse starts saying something to me. But nothing enters inside my mind. A black cloud forms around me and all I can hear is, it's been four months... till finally the whole darkness embraces me within its nothingness.
