ch 4 | A new beginning
The evening breeze is hitting my face as the passing trees and buildings witness the twists and turns of my life. An hour back I was discharged from the hospital. Angry, sad... helpless; a bunch of emotions are swimming amidst the crashing waves of my heart.
"Evelyn. Would you like to have some water?" Lena asks while driving her car.
I meet her eyes through the rearview mirror and nod a no. She is the only person whom I've seen since I woke up from my coma this morning.
Neither my parents nor Lucas' parents; none was there even during my discharge. My parents, I can understand but Lucas' parents...
"Umm... Lena, have you met or seen Lucas' parents in these four months?" I ask her not understanding the reason behind their absence in the hospital.
But Lena keeps on driving without answering.
"Lena, are they okay? And... and did my parents..."
Screech!
The car comes to a halt with a loud screech. I look outside and find the cemetery gate.
"We have reached Evelyn. We'll talk about this later." Lena says with a small smile on her face.
"You can go inside. I'll wait here for you." Lena says as she unlocks the car.
"Hm." Opening the car's door, I start walking towards the gate.
With each step my heart hurts as if a piece of glass is piercing deeper and deeper. With trembling hands, I push open the rusted iron door while a crow flies away, cawing.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath while fisting my pumps. I mumble "Lucas" under my breath and enter the cemetery.
Crossing two rows, I finally find the one my eyes are burning to see.
My Lucas! Flowers cover his stone cold grave, lying in eternal sleep under the cement platform, dry leaves dance to the rhythm of the wind conveying untold messages from my heart.
My Love, My Love, My fearless Love. I will not say goodbye. How I long to see you glance towards me with your loving gaze. Just one last time my love, just one last time.
"Lucas Maxwell, beloved son, husband and a hero to countless citizens." I sat down on the dry ground caressing the cold stone.
"If only I can warm your crypt and tell you thousand reasons to stay. You left me broken, lost and alone. What happened to our vows? Your promise? How can the god be so cruel to take you from me?" A defeaning silence is all I get as an answer.
My mind drifts back to the dream which made me bring back from coma.
I'm always with you my Eve. I love you.
I shot my eyes open feeling as if someone has whispered those words into my ears. I look around but there's not a single being. Wind has also halted. There's not a single indication of life other than me.
I smile. My logical mind is saying this is my mind's trick but somewhere deep down I want to believe that it's Lucas who is here.
When emotions get overwhelming, human beings tend to dive deep into those pool of emotions forgetting what logic says.
I look at the cold grave and smile sadly.
"I can almost feel your presence Lucas. Almost feel you whispering to me words of encouragement like you love to do. But it's not real Lucas. I want you back, why didn't you let me go with you dear? It would have reduced the pain so much. We were supposed to have our happily ever after, build our dream. What about children? We did not start a family."
I want a cute little girl, like you.
No! A naughty boy, like you.
No! Girl.
Boy!
Okay. We'll have both. What happens if we have twins?
Lucas,you are crazy...
What? It is possible Eve.
Fine. We'll have a football team. Okay?
Hmm... Not a bad idea.
Lucas!
What?
You're crazy!
For you my love.
Stop flirting and go to your work. You are getting late.
Okay Ma'am.
Idiot!
I've heard it.
Ya, whatever.
Hahaha...
"Hahaha..." My hearty laughter breaks the deadly silence of the cemetery and I return back from those happy memories.
A lone tear trails down my cheeks as I look at the stone in front me. I don't know for how long I've been sitting there. Time has come to a halt for me. All I'm feeling is a brimming pool of love for Lucas in my heart.
A warm palm lands lightly on my right shoulder. I look sideways and find Lena standing behind me.
"It's time E. The weather is not good. Looks like a storm is approaching." Lena says while I wipe the trailing tears from my cheeks.
I look around and see a gathering of dark grey clouds in the sky. But I'm not at all surprised seeing the sudden change in the weather. Isn't this how our life also changes? One moment it's all sunny and bright and in the very next moment, black clouds hold the ability to veil the light of life. I leave a long sigh.
"Let's go E. The silence is indicating an impending disastrous storm. We need to reach before it starts." Lena pulls my right arm slightly.
"Hm." Standing up, I look at the grave.
I'm leaving Lucas. But, I'll be back again. Wait for me.
"Come." Lena keeps a warm hand on my back ushering to go for the cemetery gate.
I walk slowly. My heart is still not ready to leave. But the growling of the clouds has been increasing with every moment. Reaching the gate, I look behind once again.
I love you Lucas.
Tears start pooling once again. I quickly walk into the car and take my seat. Lena closes the rusted gate of the cemetery and enters into the car. I keep on looking at the rows of cold stone. My eyes are getting hazy making it difficult for me to see.
My Lucas is now with all of you. Take care of him until I join him. Thank You. I love you Lucas.
Lena ignites the engine and whooshes away the car. The cool breeze is now picking up its speed. Strong winds are hitting my teary face as if they are slapping me for being broken. Some dry leaves are swirling on the road along with wind.
"We are going to your parents' home right?" Lena asks me while closing the car's windows.
"No. We're going home." I say not letting out any emotion in my voice.
"But Evelyn, your mother asked me to take you there." Lena says.
"I don't want to go there Lena." The topic is now frustrating me.
"Okay. I'll inform aunty." Lena says with disappointment in her voice.
"Hm." Our conversation ends there. Lena concentrates on the road while I stare outside waiting for the approaching storm and thunder.
