[No Ship] ~ Omelettes and Injuries

I'm back to writing requests! I actually rewrote this one shot three times cause I wasn't happy with how it turned out, so I hope you like it. Requested by Save_Them , who later clarified that the fourth wall break part of the request is that Logan spends his day off hanging out with me, the author. I'm honored. Thanks for giving me a day with Logan, I appreciate it.

~~~
It took Thomas and the traits a good amount of persistence to finally convince Logan to take a day off, but it was worth it. It was obvious Logan needed one. He was always overworking himself, and it wasn't healthy.
There was a corner of Thomas's mind palace that had some sort of strange area. It sort of lead to some sort of alternate universe... None of the traits understood it, but they had given up trying. Logan wanted to explore it, so that's what he decided he would do for the day.
Just as he was about to leave, he turned back to the other three traits. "You sure you'll be okay? You know that, as I go into the depths of the mind palace, Thomas will slowly start to lose his logical thinking, right?"
"Don't worry, we have it under control. We can babysit Thomas." Roman said. "I mean, he'll just act like a really stupid kid, right?"
"Not exactly." Logan said.
"Well, we had it under control when Virgil went missing, now didn't we?" Roman asked.
"That was different. Thomas was without fear then. Now he'll be without logic, which might cause a whole bunch of other problems." Logan said.
"Don't worry, if it means you get a much-needed day off, then it's worth it." Patton said.
Logan smiled at the three of them. "Thank you." He started to leave, then immediately turned around. "Oh, and one more thing. Please try not to burn down Thomas's entire apartment building while I'm gone."
"Wow, such faith." Virgil said sarcastically. "Just go, Logan. We'll be fine, I promise."
Logan nodded, and left.
~~~

If you thought Thomas without fear was interesting, Thomas without logic was even more so.

Roman was given the job of trying to make up for Thomas's lack of motivation due to Logan's absence. He was feeding Thomas new ideas, but that just led to the horrible feeling when you have an idea but no motivation to actually do it. Patton tried to get Thomas motivated by making him excited, but... It wasn't the same.

Virgil was attempting to make up for the lack of basic intelligence by overdosing on the fear. He would make Thomas scared to do things he would normally know not to do.

It was pretty early on in the day when Thomas started doing stuff he shouldn't, but of course he didn't know that without his logical thinking. When he made an omelette for himself, he didn't use a spatula, and instead used his fingers (he had washed his hands beforehand, at least, because Roman told him to).

Worried that he was going to burn himself, Virgil did what he could to stop Thomas. Of course, that meant he gave Thomas a wave of sudden and sickening anxiety.

It worked. Thomas withdrew his hand. But he wasn't looking good. His breath was short and choppy, and he was near a panic.

Guilt striked Virgil. He had overdone it again. He hadn't meant to, he just wanted to stop Thomas. In the heat of the moment, he didn't pay attention to how much he was doing.

"Ohnononononono," Virgil said. "Uh..."

He tried to ease up the anxiety, which wasn't his strong suit, because he was made for giving Thomas anxiety, not the other way around. He instructed Thomas to take deep breaths, and soon enough, it was okay. Thomas was okay.

Virgil exhaled in relief, but he couldn't shake the feeling of guilt for overdoing it in the first place.

The others had seemed to move on, though, so Virgil attempted to as well.

"Good thing he doesn't have to make a video today." Roman said.

"We still have to 'babysit' him for the whole day." Virgil said. "He's acting so... stupid."

"You should've seen him when he was without fear." Patton said.

"It was almost funny." Roman said. "Just the way he talked and acted... He made a granola mess on the carpet, Virgil. He never makes messes like that without cleaning it up."

"And Logan was so annoyed it was funny!" Patton said.

"Whereas when Logan disappears I nearly give Thomas a panic attack over a stupid omelette." Virgil muttered.

"You didn't mean to, kiddo! You just went a bit too far, but you had good intentions!" Patton said.

"Good intentions. They don't actually ever get anyone anywhere, do they?" Virgil sighed.

"I will physically fight you!" Patton threatened.

Virgil laughed dryly.

"Stop it, Virgil. You're one of us. Stop making yourself out to be the bad guy when we're telling you that's not the case." Roman said.

Virgil didn't say anything.

"Virgil?" Patton asked.

"Let's talk about something happier, shall we?" Virgil offered.

Patton and Roman hesitated to change the subject, but obliged.

"What about Thomas's most recent audition?" Roman offered.

"He did well! I'm proud of the little kiddo!" Patton said.

"Well of course he did well, I helped." Roman said.

Patton and Roman got involved in their own little conversation, and Virgil sank out without them noticing.

What use is a caretaker who only harms?

~~~
Virgil was summoned abruptly a few hours later, appearing in his corner on the stairs.
"A little warning might be nice."
"Kiddo, there's a problem." Patton said.
"What?" Virgil looked from Roman to Patton, the only other inhabitants in the room.
"See, we sorta lost Thomas." Patton said.
"You what?" Virgil blinked. "You were supposed to be looking after him!"
"So were you, Eyeshadow Overdose!" Roman said.
"You two were the ones that could actually help him!" Virgil said.
"We can't do much to make up for his lack of logical thinking when we don't have fear to tell him not to do stuff!" Roman said.
Virgil bit his lip.
I guess... But what if I overdo it again?
"Let's not fight. Let's just look for him." Patton suggested.
Virgil, Patton, and Roman searched for Thomas, and the good thing was, they didn't have to look far.
Thomas was in a tree... and pretty high up.
"Hey guys!" Thomas called.
"Where's his natural sense of fear?" Virgil asked.
See, there's a certain level of fear that everyone feels at times where there's potential danger. This is natural, and while it comes from Virgil, Virgil doesn't consciously give it to Thomas, it just happens. The only way that Thomas doesn't feel this natural level of fear is if Virgil consciously stops doing his job cold turkey. If Virgil consciously gives Thomas anxiety, it's on top of his natural level of fear, so that's why Virgil has to be careful that he doesn't overdo it. He usually only does this cause it's his job and/or he's trying to protect Thomas.
"His natural level of fear isn't high. Without logic to tell him he should listen to his fear for his own safety, he'll be able to ignore his fear easier." Roman explained.
"That's why we need you do give him fear." Patton said. "It's okay that you overdid it earlier. Everyone makes mistakes, and you rectified it as soon as you could! Thomas doesn't blame you and neither do we. And you know what? It got the job done. Thomas didn't burn his finger, which he would've if you hadn't done anything."
Virgil smiled. "Thanks, Patton. You too, Roman. That means a lot, you guys."
He took a deep breath and gently gave Thomas anxiety and fear. He planted more and more fearful thoughts into Thomas's head until it was enough to get him to decide to come down.
Thomas started to climb down, but... The thing was, Thomas was never much of a tree-climber as a kid. He was some feet above the ground when he lost his grip of the branch, and fell.
Roman felt the urge to make a Dear Evan Hansen reference, but knew this wasn't the time.
Virgil, Patton, and Roman rushed to Thomas's aid.
"Can you stand up?" Patton asked.
"Sure." Thomas said, standing up... Or attempting to. Almost immediately, his leg buckled and he toppled over again. "Okay, maybe not."
"That's okay, uh..." Virgil tried to think.
"Thomas, do you have your phone on you?" Roman asked.
"When do I not?" Thomas replied.
"Can I have it?" Virgil asked.
Thomas handed it to him.
Virgil searched through Thomas's contacts and called the one labeled "Talyn". He put the phone on speaker so they could all hear once Talyn picked up.
"Why Talyn and not Joan? Not that I have anything against Talyn." Roman asked, watching the screen over Virgil's shoulder.
Virgil shrugged. "I guess I just like Talyn. Something about shapeshifting into them sorta gave me an appreciation for them."
"I thought you hated the shapeshifting." Roman said.
"I did." Virgil said. "But still."
Talyn answered the phone. "What's up?"
"Can you come over to Thomas's place? He hurt his leg and we don't really know what to do. Can Joan come, too?"
"Wait, who is this? You sound like Thomas, but..."
"It's Virgil. Patton and Roman are here too, but Logan's not here at the moment. He's sorta deep in the mind palace and he won't be back until tonight, and Thomas isn't thinking very logically right now because of it."
"Okay, I got you. I'll be right over there, and I'll get Joan, too. They'll want to help Thomas."
With that, Talyn hung up.
Virgil looked at the others.
"So... While we wait for Talyn and Joan..." Thomas said. "Who else is thinking of Dear Evan Hansen right now because I fell out of a tree?"
"THANK YOU!" Roman said.
Talyn and Joan weren't long. They parked and came up to Thomas.
"So what happened?" Joan asked.
"I fell out of a tree like Evan Hansen." Thomas said.
"Logan's not here, and Thomas lost his logical thinking." Virgil explained. "He climbed a tree and slipped, and he fell on his leg."
"It hurts, but at least I can make Dear Evan Hansen references, so I'm good." Thomas said.
"The sad thing is I can't even tell if he's referencing Dear Evan Hansen at a time like this because Logan's gone or because that's just Thomas." Talyn muttered.
"Can your move your leg?" Joan asked.
Thomas tried and visibly winced. "No."
"We should get that checked out." Joan said. "It could be broken."
"If I need a cast, will you write 'Connor' on it?" Thomas asked.
"Let's just see about getting you to the hospital, okay?" Talyn said.
Talyn and Joan carried Thomas to the car. They didn't want to have to cram six people into one car, so the three traits sank into the mind palace for the drive over.
"I wish I were a trait. That would be so cool, wouldn't it? Summoning things, mind palace, teleporting, shapeshifting, all of that stuff." Talyn said as they were driving.
"You would be the embodiment of adorable." Joan flirted.
"Stooop." Talyn blushed.
"D'awww!" Thomas fanboyed.
They arrived at the hospital, and the three traits teleported out of the mind palace and back into real life.
Thomas was taken to a room. After a little bit, doctors confirmed that he had broken his leg.
"Wow, we really can't function without Logan, can we?" Roman said.
"Thomas has all of his traits for a reason. If he loses one of them, everything goes out of whack." Talyn said.
Great, Virgil thought. Another reminder of a time I screwed up.
"Logan deserved a day off." Patton said. "He works hard."
Talyn nodded. "I agree."
Thomas ended up getting a cast, and the first thing Roman did was scrawl "Connor" in big letters on it.
"Thanks, buddy." Thomas said.
Once they were back home, Talyn and Joan left, leaving just Thomas and his traits.
Hours passed by and the traits kept Thomas company. They watched lots of cartoons, since it was the perfect opportunity to watch them in Logan's absence. The cartoon of the hour was Steven Universe.
"I come back and you're watching cartoons? I see how it is." A teasing voice came from behind them. They all spun around to see that their favorite bookworm had indeed returned.
"LOGAN!" Patton climbed over Thomas's couch to greet Logan with a bear hug.
"Nice to see you, too, Patton." Logan smiled.
"Welcome back, nerd." Roman greeted in the way he does.
Logan smirked. "Good to be back, halfwit."
Virgil smiled at Logan. That was all Logan needed to know that Virgil was just as happy as the others.
"Hey, buddy!" Thomas said from the couch.
Logan smiled at the host.
"So tell us how your day went!" Patton said.
"It was great. I met someone named—" (insert the text tone from My Personality Q&A) "—but she goes by Star. She wore a Steven Universe shirt just like Thomas's, and she even said she was a Fander. She taught me a lot of new contemporary slang terms." Logan held up flash cards. "Canon, fanon, smol—she said Virgil was a smol—"
"I AM NOT SMOL!" Virgil protested.
Thomas laughed. "Yes, you are."
"Just go on, Logan." Virgil said.
Logan continued. "Headcanon was a word too. Oh, and one last term— ship. She told me about these ships called Prinxiety and Logicality."
Thomas laughed from the couch as Logan explained what a "ship" was to the traits.
"People want me to get with Roman? Gross!" Virgil said.
"I'm offended!" Roman said. "But for the record I hate you too."
"Good to know its mutual." Virgil scoffed.
"Okay, guys." Patton said. "Let's not be mean."
Logan changed the subject. "It's nice to see you guys didn't burn the building down."
"You have such little faith in us!" Virgil said, clicking his tongue and shaking his head sarcastically.
"You're right. You guys seemed to have handled it pretty well." Logan said.
Then he walked in front of the couch. He looked from Thomas to the sides, them just sighed and rubbed his temples.
"Why is Thomas in a cast?"
