He reminded himself that this was supposed to be good for him, that it would test his love for you and that it'd be even more rewarding to hold you once again. It still stabbed his immortal heart every time he had to watch you walk alongside another man. Yet, he still could not bring himself to be happy once your relationships ended- more often than not it left you with another scar on your heart that needed time to heal. It would only take a few simple words to start a familiar relationship, but he liked to keep his distance- if for the sake of reminding himself how important he was to you.

A passing breeze played with his long purple locks. He could imagine the feeling of your slender digits twirling and twisting, gently playing with the tresses. Soon enough, that's what he reminded himself. He'd stand by your side soon enough.

Down below you lay, surrounded by people who made their way into your heart. Family, friends, loved ones, they all gathered to mourn your passing and celebrate the life you had. Opening his clenched palm, Forget-Me-Not flowers fluttered down, and he watched as the small flowers danced over the coffin of the you that loved flowers more than anything.

One would think he wouldn't care about a reincarnation he'd never spoken to once.

One would think that seeing you die time after time would stop hurting.

One would think.

He'd seen you die how many times now?

How many peaceful deaths?

How many gruesome deaths?

He supposed it didn't matter. You always came back.

Soon enough, there would be a child born with your eyes. A child born with your smile. A child born with your soul.

To be permanently mourning without truly mourning, that was the paradox he lived in.

He wondered what it would be like to just once, just once, be buried by your side.

What kind of things would you like this time?

Would you look at him from fluttering eyelashes and flushed cheeks or would you catch his eyes with a cheeky smile? Would you avoid physical contact or would you cling to him like a baby koala?

He was never changing, and you were ever changing.

No... That's not exactly right. There was one thing he always knew about you without a doubt. You loved him unconditionally and that was all he ever asked for.

The first meeting would bring a sense of newness, colliding instantly with a sense of familiarity. People could call it love at first sight, but he knew better than that. Appearances be damned; this was a love that transcended time, logic, reality- that is the kind of love you two shared; even if you couldn't quite put it to words.

Violet eyes went to the sky, the eyes of a broken man waiting for the only glue that could ever keep him together in one piece.

He supposed it was his only ray of hope in an otherwise damned world. This was his punishment for mocking the gods, immortality that would sever him from the only person he loved, mocking him with your death, and then taking pity on him and blessing him with the years of your love.

Maybe one day your spirit and his spirit could finally be at rest together.

His heart gave a rapid succession of thumps and he felt himself shiver from head to toe.

She's back.

He glanced at the aged body laying in the coffin one last time, the last glimpse of who you were this lifetime. But your soul already moved on, and he was to follow it.

Until he could lay down besides you, he would continue to stand with you.
