AFTER THE 'INCIDENT' last night at the competition, things were tense.
Pushing through families and finally reaching the outside, where a cool breeze helps cool them off, the boys scurry into Mrs. Na's car, not even being able to bid their friends a goodbye. When the get inside the car, Jaemin's mother was fuming. Her hands were clenched tightly on the steering wheel and her face was bright red. As she began driving home, she scolded Jeno.
"How could you act like such a fool, Jeno? You know better than that."
Jeno hung his head low. The woman was like a second mother to him, so knowing that he disappointed her stung a little.
Currently, the boys are sitting at the breakfast nook. After the competition, Jeno was too tired to drive himself home so he decided to sleepover. Now, they listen to the microwave hum as they wait for their food to be warmed.
Jeno was starving, and as soon as Jaemin pulled the leftovers out of the microwave and set on the table, he shoved a croissant into his mouth. "I'm telling you Nana, you were great!" Jeno exclaimed with his mouth still half full.
The brunette rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You're just trying to avoid talking about Genevieve."
"What's there to talk about?" Jeno asked, looking slightly uncomfortable.
"You didn't just come to see me. You came to see Genevieve too." Jaemin commented, already seeing right through Jeno. He was tired of being kept in the dark.
Jeno gaped. "I'm only a fanboy for you, Nana!" He joked.
"For real," Jaemin leaned over and grabbed his best friends hands, who jumped in surprise. "You have tell me what's going on!" He pouted, batting his eyelashes cutely in hopes that it would get the other to crack.
All he got from the other was a smirk, yet no words followed.
Jaemin groaned and shoved a piece of bacon in his mouth. After swallowing, he shrugged. "Fine. I'll get Genevieve to spill instead." He commented, pursing his lips. Standing up, he grabs both of their plates and puts it in the sink.
"Hey!" Jeno yelps. "I wasn't done!"
"That's what happens to losers." Jaemin comments, sticking his tongue out.
"You're going to get it!" Jeno yells, a mischievous glint shining in his eyes before he suddenly stands up, the chair scraping against the tile floor and chases after Jaemin, who screams and runs away.
Running around the small house and jumping over furniture and playing like how boys do. Sometimes Jeno would get a hold on Jaemin, in such the latter would then pinch him and continue running away. It isn't until they're in the living room and Jeno manages to catch up. He pushes the younger onto the couch and leans over to tickle him, who erupts in giggles and squirms, his arms flail in the air trying to get his friend to stop, but it's no use. He can't concentrate well enough to get him to stop.
As the younger flails around, Jeno finds himself staring at his best friend. The way his eyes crinkle with happiness, and joy, and the loud yet heavenly sounding giggles that fall from his mouth make butterflies flutter in his stomach. His lips look soft and smooth, and he looks beautiful while smiling. He almost looks . . . kissable?
When Jaemin realizes the tickles have stopped, he looks up and gulps. He didn't realize how close their faces are, and he can feel Jeno's warm breath against his cheek.
This shouldn't be happening. They shouldn't be this close. Not this intimate. He feels like he's betraying everything. His friendship with Jeno, and somehow, he thinks about how this would affect Jisung if he knew what was happening.
Would he be mad?
No, he probably wouldn't care.
Jaemin flinches when he feels Jeno's soft hand touch his cheek, and he blinks innocently. No words are spoken, but it seems like a billion words are being said as they stare into each other's eyes. Yet somehow, Jaemin still can't figure it out.
"U-um, what're your doing?" Jaemin finally speaks, barely audible.
As if snapped out of a trance, Jeno immediately gets off of his best friend and coughs. Jaemin sits up and they avoid eye contact for a few seconds, awkward silence consuming the room.
Jaemin hates it. They're never awkward with each other.
Not being able to take it anymore, Jaemin suggests, "Why don't we go wake up Joonie and Jia? They've been sleeping for too long."
Nodding his head, Jeno agrees, "Good idea."
The brunette will have to analyze this later.
After successfully getting ready, the boys got into Jeno's car and headed to school. Although Jeno's family is much better off than Jaemin's family: money wise, his car still wasn't too extravagant. He had a Honda, but it had everything you needed. Air conditioning, bluetooth and built in GPS. The brunette was just thankful he didn't have to suffer the sun's wrath on his way to school today.
Jeno has offered to give Jaemin rides to school before, but always gets declined. The younger claims that it's out of the way, and he doesn't have enough money to pay him for gas so he just walks. He doesn't mind walking. It's quite nice during autumn and winter, but summer is just hell.
It's only a five minute ride before Jeno smoothly pulls into an open parking space and hops out the car, soon followed by Jaemin.
A big smile is quick to adorn the brunettes lips when he walks in through the front doors. The first thing he sees are large banners hung on every wall visible with him and his team members on it. The cheerleaders stand right in the middle of it all, their pom poms high in the air and as soon as they see Jaemin, they start clapping and hollering for him.
"Look at that, Na! That looks amazing," Jeno comments, pointing to the banners.
Jaemin nods but has no words. Too much joy and pride fills him.
They continue to walk through the hallways, trying to make it to their home room class. There, he spots Genevieve who waves excitedly at the two of them. The boy walks over to the table and Genevieve moves into the middle, which makes Jaemin raise a brow. The brunette is usually always sitting in between his two best friends, and this change in dynamics makes him further suspect that something is going on between them.
"What're we doing?" Jaemin questions.
Genevieve looks at him as if he's an alien. "What do you mean?"
Jaemin can't help but scowl. He shakes his head and decides not to fight about it. He sits on the outer seat and rests his head in his palm, waiting for the bell to ring and for school to officially start. His best friends chattering rings annoyingly in his ear, and he feels a bit hurt that they're not even trying to include him in the conversation.
" . . . Do you want to go on a date with me?"
He hears Genevieve ask, her voice shy and quiet. His eyes widen and his breath quickens, but he forces himself to keep his head directed the other way, not wanting the others to know he's eavesdropping.
It's silent for a minute, and Jaemin swears he feels the elder's stare burn at the side of his head, before Jeno's deep voice rumbles in his ear. "Yeah, sure."
This is ludicrous!
Does Jeno really have a crush on Genevieve? How? He almost kissed me this morning!
Jaemin can't help but feel angered. Not because he also likes his best friend, but simply because of all the weird moments they've shared recently. He felt betrayed, and lied to. How can Jeno get upset about not being told about Jisung yet flirt with Jaemin's other best friend? And how can Jeno keep giving him these mixed signals? Are they even signals or is Jaemin really that conceited?
Am I missing something here?
The brunette can feel the steam coming out from the top of his head as he ponders, wondering what he could've missed. What's been going on behind his back? Should he ask his friends? Should he be bothered? Should he be happy?
Jaemin wants to throw up from all the thoughts jumbling in his mind, and he doesn't even notice that the final bell has rang and it's time for first period until Jeno shakes his shoulders and tickles his sides. It makes the vile taste of vomit travel to his throat and he holds his hand up.
"Stop," He mumbles.
Jeno tilts his head, looking concerned. "Are you okay?"
"Just take me to class."
The raven-haired boy gently puts an arm around the younger's waist and guides him to their next class. Call Jaemin dramatic, but he truly does feel lightheaded with everything going on. It seems like he just can't keep up.
Jeno doesn't like Jisung. Jeno likes Genevieve. But Jeno almost kissed me. Do I like Jisung? Does Jisung like me? After all, he did attend my competition . . .
Jaemin groans aloud and slams his head against the desk, deciding that a nap is much more needed than English class.
"Where are you? I'm waiting by the bus ramp, Jeno!" Jaemin screams into his phone before sighing frustratedly.
He hears a chuckle. "Sorry, Nana. I can't take you home today, I'm going on a date with Genevieve, remember?" He inquiries.
The brunette scoffs. "Whatever. Don't ever ask me to make you fluffy pancakes again!" He hangs up immediately and shoves the phone in his back pocket. He tightens his grip on his backpack before stomping down the bus ramp.
How dare he! Promising Jaemin a ride after school only to ditch him to take one of his best friends on a date without even asking! Jaemin was furious, to say the least. It was a shitty thing to do. It would be much different if his best friend had never promised him a ride home, but he did and now Jaemin is unprepared and has to walk in one hundred degree weather.
Jaemin's brows stay furrowed and he doesn't look up from the sidewalk once the whole walk home until he reached his little, blue house. He searched for his keys before pulling them out and unlocking the front door and feels the cool air crawl down his body and he sighs in relief. Throwing his backpack to the floor, he plops himself onto the couch and let's out a long breath. Lifting his head, he grabs the remote and turns on some cooking show with Gordon Ramsey. Chuckling whenever he hears the guy rip someone's head off, it lifts his mood.
Checking the clock, he notices he'll have to go back into the head to pick his siblings up from school.
God, how he wishes he had a car.
His phone vibrates in his lap, effectively grabbing his attention.
Clicking on the attachments, the boy watches all three videos Jisung sent him. Although he already saw some videos that his mom took that night, he didn't mind seeing from a different angle. He was able to study his movements, determining if it was perfect or not.
He was satisfied with it.
Jaemin isn't quite sure how to respond to Jisung. The blonde just left so suddenly last night, without even saying a goodbye.
A few minutes pass by and Jaemin is engaged with watching Hell's Kitchen, enjoying every time Ramsey is unsatisfied and decides to pop off on the employees. It sucks for them, but it's great for the audience. Jaemin chuckles, but it's cut short when his phone starts ringing. He picks it up and gasps when he sees Jisung's name.
Oh God, Jaemin thinks. Why is he calling me?!
Taking a deep breath, Jaemin accepts and puts the phone next to his ear, "Hello?"
Jisung's raspy voice sends shivers down his body. "Hey," He says. "I was going to say this through text but it felt lame. But I'm sorry for leaving last night."
The brunette is at a lost of words. He stutters, "U-um, it's fine . . ."
"I want to make it up to you."
Jaemin tilted his head quizzically. "How?" He asks, curious to know what idea the other has.
It's silent on the other like for a little while, almost as if Jisung is thinking of something worthy enough to mention before he says, "Let me take you on a real date."
The brunette gasps in surprise, and nearly chokes on the air. He definitely was not expecting anything like that. A real date? If it were up to Jaemin, he would've considered the picnic a date, but it's clear thatย Jisung thinks otherwise. So many thoughts race to Jaemin's head and he already feels a headache on its way.
Does this mean that Jisung likes me? Or is it a pity date? Do I even like him like that?
Jaemin likes being around Jisung. He feels happy, and the most alive. Of course, the blonde isn't hard to look at either, which is a bonus. But that doesn't mean he's attracted to him, does it?
"What do you think?" Jisung interrupts his thoughts.
"Okay," Jaemin says, not knowing anything better to say.
"I'll text you the details."
With that vague response, Jisung ends the call leaving Jaemin stuck in his thoughts once again.
