Dear Wattpaders,
First off let me state that I enjoy using Wattpad. I love interacting with readers, fans, and other authors. I've made some pretty awesome friends on this site, but there seems to be several misconceptions on the readers’ part, particularly the younger ones. Let me clear up a few things for you.
#1 A Good Book Doesn't Happen Overnight
I will not have an entire novel up every month. I will not put up a new chapter every day or even every week. Some of us prefer to not put up anything until the entire book is finished AND edited. I am not comfortable putting up my completely raw work...
#2 Most Authors Have A Day Job
Writing is not the only thing I do all day. I have a family to take care of too, organizations I volunteer with. I'm lucky in the fact that I have more free time than a lot of people but still, my non-author life takes up a lot of my time.
#3 Writing Is Not The Only Thing Authors Do
A lot of people think all we have to do is write. I wish. There is an insane amount of marketing involved with having books published. Not to mention all the other logistic stuff like editing and book covers, etc. Sometimes we'll spend a week getting a presentation ready. There is a lot going on behind the scenes.
#4 It Isn't Wrong To Want To Be Paid
I spend a lot of time writing, editing, marketing...It can easily take a year to start and finish a book (and marketing never ends!). Why shouldn't I get compensated for some of my time? I’m sorry, but most people who write want to make at least some money at it. It's no different than expecting a pay check for any other job.
#5 We Don't Have Total Control Over Things
If there is an agent and/or publisher involved, in all honesty, they make a lot of the decisions. They decide when a book will be released and when or if a sequel will be. Suddenly you aren't the only one deciding. They have rights once you sign a contract. I may not be allowed to keep a whole book up....or put up the sequel.
#6 We Appreciate Feedback
Especially when it's done politely. If you tell us that our grammar 'sux' we are not going to listen to you. Also, if you write entirely in text speak, at least for my part, you may not be understood! Just remember that we are not faceless drones writing entirely for your pleasure. We're people too and we do have feelings. If you don't like something, by all means let us know, but don't be rude about it!
