Chapter 16: Speeches from the Young and Old

MAY 8TH (SUNDAY 5/08) (EVENING)

When I got back to the cafe, I turned on the TV. A shopping program was on, which I always liked to watch to buy some good stuff. The ordered the stuff that they had on the TV, happy that I would be getting a good deal. I then left the cafe to the Underground Walkway, buying one of those Nasty Aujiro drinks to have. After downing the drink (reluctantly), I went to my night job at the Beef Bowl Shop. The job was pretty hectic, but I handled it well.

MAY 9TH (MONDAY 5/09)(AFTERNOON)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Troublemaker Blondie💀: Hey, don't you think the atmosphere at school's kinda different now?

Red Kitty🐱💃💋: You mean with there being no Kamoshida?

Troublemaker Blondie💀: Yeah, nobody ever talked about him out in the open like this before.

🤓The Ultimate Bro🤓: That's true

You: It's good. They know not to trust everything they see now.

Troublemaker Blondie💀: I wish someone'd just thank us for it or something...

Red Kitty🐱💃💋: Either way, everything has worked out for the best. After all, Kamoshida's actually been punished for his crimes. That's victory enough for me.

🤓The Ultimate Bro🤓: I agree

Troublemaker Blondie💀: I wonder what's gonna happen to him now. I mean, he's a famous criminal at this point, right? He's gonna have to deal with people hating him forever...

Red Kitty🐱💃💋: That might be true, but I don't have any sympathy for him. He got what he deserved.

Troublemaker Blondie💀: For sure.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAY 9TH (MONDAY 5/09)(AFTER SCHOOL)

After class, I got a message from Mishima.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

📱Phan-boy: Hey, I have some new info for you! I saw it on the Phan Site, but I've heard about it at school too. Anyway, there's a guy at school whose bullying has gone too far. I want to help the victim, but that's impossible for me... I went ahead and posted on the forum that the Phantom Thieves are coming for him though. I mean you already changed the heart of that stalker, so this should be a breeze, right?

You: I can check it out.

📱Phan-boy: You're amazing! The bully is a brown-haired guy frequently seen standing out front of the school entrance. And from what I can tell, his name is Daisuke Takanashi. Just make sure nobody knows I told you the name!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went to our hideout, calling the others and telling them all about Mishima's request. After that, we all dispersed. Ryuji was about to leave, but I caught up to him.

"Hey, you want to hang out?", I asked quietly.

"Oh? Yeah, I'm free! Want to train at this gym I found?", Ryuji asked excitedly.

"Hm, sure.", I nodded. We both got our gym clothes and went to Shibuya. When we got there, we stood in front of a gym called "Protein Lovers".

"Here we are... Protein Lovers gym! We came with Ann that one time, remember? That was a free visitor's day, but you're gonna have to start payin' from now on. It's pay per visit though, so you don't gotta worry about any bullshit contracts or nothing. The equipment's kinda crappy, but they got tons of variety. Plus, it's real damn cheap. Totally worth, even without a pool or hot tub. Oh yeah! You bring your stuff?", Ryuji asked. I pulled out a small bottle of protein powder.

"I brought this...", I shrugged.

"Hell yeah, man. If you wanna beef up, you gotta- Wait, that ain't it! I'm talkin' about spare undies! Gettin' back into your sweaty clothes after a nice hot shower is like, the grossest goddamn thing.", Ryuji shuddered.

"I mean, I did bring mine. I'm just not going to pull out my panties and say "Why yes, Ryuji. I did bring my extra panties." You know?", I shrugged, making Ryuji go a bit red but laughed anyways.

"Anyways, let's head in.", Ryuji and I went inside. We went hard on anything we could get our hands on, sweating bullets. By the end of it, we looked like wet dogs. Ryuji had his hands on his knees, barely standing.

"*cough* *wheeze* Phew... My form's... comin' back... but I don't got... any stamina... *cough*", Ryuji panted. A voice called Ryuji's name, making us turn to a boy.

"Sakamoto?", the boy looked like a student, a bit older than us.

"Ikeda-senpai! Goornin'!", Ryuji grinned.

"Don't you mean "good morning"? Hahaha, you're as eloquent as ever, Sakamoto.", the student, who I knew now as Ikeda-senpai, laughed.

"Heck yeah, man! I've been studyin' my words n' sh*t!", Ryuji joined in on the light teasing. I felt myself smile just a bit, but I kept it to myself.

"Of course, you have, haha. Oh, and you don't need to call me senpai anymore. I've already graduated, remember?", the boy turned to me and smiled. " Hm? I haven't seen you before... Were you on the girl's team?"

"No, I'm a transfer student.", I explained.

"Her? She's, uh... a friend! By the time she showed up, the track team was already... well, y'know.", Ryuji explained, a small frown on his face at the last statement.

"Speaking of which, how's your leg?", Ikeda-senpai asked.

"Eh, I'm managin'... How 'bout you, Senpai? You still runnin'?", Ryuji asked.

"I actually joined my university's track team. You'd think I would've quit entirely after what happened...", Ikeda-senpai mumbled, a bit surprised.

"About that, I'm real sorry...", Ryuji apologized.

"No, I should be the one apologizing. I was supposed to be the leader of our team, yet I just resigned myself to Kamoshida's will...", Ikeda-senpai sighed.

"That's 'cause you needed him to write your letter of rec, right? You were just lookin' out for your future... but I still managed to eff it up anyways.", Ryuji grumbled.

"Kamoshida clearly never intended on writing my letter of recommendation. You were just his excuse not to. And honestly, I enjoy where I am now. The track team isn't anything special, but it's perfect for me. So, in truth, I should be thanking you for what you did, Sakamoto.", Ikeda-senpai smiled at the end.

"Senpai...", Ryuji looked a bit surprised, a little guilt in his eyes.

"I've always regretted not doing more to protect you guys... But I heard some good news recently... The Shujin track team's being reinstated!", Ikeda-senpai revealed. My eyes went a bit wide, looking at Ryuji to see he was even more surprised than I was.

"For real!?", Ryuji gasped.

"I mean, Kamoshida confessed all the horrible stuff he did, right? I guess the school got the old team together and told them they want to try starting it up again.", Ikeda-senpai explained.

"... Nobody told me about that.", Ryuji mumbled. I felt a pang in my heart, gritting my teeth a bit.

"Huh, odd... The rumors got as far as me, and I'm not even a student anymore. Anyway, I heard they're going to get Mr. Yamauchi as their new advisor.", Ikeda-senpai pointed out.

"Yamauchi...? Hold up, THAT Yamauchi?", Ryuji gasped.

"Yup, the one who was basically Kamoshida's lapdog. Apparently, he volunteered. He's really enthusiastic about pulling the track team up from the ashes.", Ikeda-senpai explained.

"He is...?", Ryuji muttered with a raised brow.

"You know, now that the team is being reinstated, there's no need for any bad blood, right? Why don't you go talk to them? I'm sure they could use someone with your passion.", Ikeda-senpai suggested.

"... Yeah.", Ryuji sighed, watching Ikeda-senpai leave us with a wave. "So, the track team's comin' back... Good for them."

"You seem... conflicted.", I mumbled, a little ball of worry eating at my gut.

"Nah, not really... For real though, I'm glad the team's comin' back. It's sweet that Nakaoka and them can start trainin' again. But I'm still worried 'bout their advisor, Yamauchi. He's basically like a mini-Kamoshida.", Ryuji explained.

"So, he's an a*shole.", I scoffed.

"Basically. He'd always yell at us at practice, but then be a huge kiss-a*s when our parents were around. Ugh, I can't believe a moron like that's gonna be advisin' the track team. He doesn't even teach PE! ... He's gotta be up to something. I'll do some research... There's a chance I'm gonna need your help too, mkay? You'd be free to lend me a hand if I need it, yeah? I'll be countin' on you!", Ryuji grinned. I nodded silently, willing to help if he needed it.

"All right, we don't got time to be messin' around here anymore! Let's head home! Wait, I gotta shower first!", Ryuji laughed as we both went to take a shower. We finished and went our separate ways.

MAY 9TH (MONDAY 5/09)(EVENING)

(outfit)

I was walking around Shibuya for window shopping, since I wasn't in the mood to go back to the cafe. As I was walking back to the station, I noticed the politician from a week or so ago.

He's still preaching...

He does seem to have some good points.

I am guessing you want me to talk to him?

You know me so well.

Screw you...

I slowly made my way towards the politician to hear him.

"...There have been far too many incidents recently to ignore! Can anyone deny this!? The runaway train incident, mysterious psychotic breakdowns, a school with corrupt teachers... We have yet to discover the truth of it all! The apathy that permeates society is a direct result of negligence by our government and the media.", the politician turned to me with a curious look on his face. " ...You're listening quite attentively. Are you interested in politics?"

Not really, but Ezio wants me to talk to you...

"I am interested.", I nodded quietly.

" Are you a student? I'm delighted to captivate the interest of someone your age. ...Hm? Have I seen you somewhere before...? Oh, you were working at the beef bowl shop before! You have a lot of perseverance for a young person. Well, if you're interested, I could use your help. I want to change the state of this country, and to do so, I need the power of the youth. ..However, due to certain regulations, I can't offer a job to a student. I was thinking you could learn some things if you chose to attend a few of my speeches though...", the politician offered.

"I can work with that.", I accepted.

"Really!? That would be helpful indeed! Well then... would you mind telling me your name and contact information?", the politician asked. I gave him my info on a piece of paper and gave it to him. " You're a student from Shujin Academy, hm? It's nice to meet you. I am Toranosuke Yoshida. I used to be a member of the Diet... but no longer. In the past twenty years, I've lost seven straight elections... This isn't good. I'm dwelling on the negative right before my speech. Well then, I hope I can count on your help immediately.", Yoshida-san explained. He gave me a sign to hold up, and sometimes asked me to grab people's attention to his speech. It wasn't hard, as more people came around. Yoshida-san's speech was really good, in my opinion. "The lines of what is considered right and wrong in society today have been blurred. With common sense no longer our guide, we make decisions based on our selfish wants and desires. This has resulted in a deluge of self-centered people who delight in taking advantage of the weak. However, even in this modern day and age, it is imperative that we act in the best interests of all. A world where it is acceptable to trample on the rights of others for your own benefit... A world where the young exist only to be exploited... is a world that must be changed!", a few people started whispering to each other.

"Hmph, easy for him to say... Old-timers like me have our hands full taking care of ourselves."

"He's actually making some good points, but he's a no-name... He probably won't get too far. Nothing's going to change. We'll just keep getting exploited."

"...What's this wannabe politician blathering about now? He isn't even affiliated with a party. How about you just leave matters of state in the capable hands of the Liberal Co-Prosperity Party!"

"You mustn't base your decision on whom to support merely according to the party they belong to...", Yoshida-san retorted respectfully.

"Ah, just shut up already! You're just a washed-up politician!", I wanted to say something, but Yoshida-san explicitly told me beforehand not to say anything, as it could cause his campaign to fall out. He already wasn't doing so well, so running my mouth wouldn't do any good.

"If I am chosen to represent the will of the people, then I am fully prepared to...", Yoshida-san mumbled.

""In the best interests of all"!? Hah! Save the blathering for when you get elected! ...IF you get elected!", more comments were thrown, but Yoshida-san kept on until the end. We both took down his setup and went to speak privately.

"Thank you. That is all for today. Well, what did you think of my speech?", Yoshida-san asked.

"It was nice, and I want to ask you... What do you mean by "the best interests of all"?", I questioned.

"... Oh, don't worry about that. Such as I am, I'd like to believe that I'm capable of giving a moving speech ...However, there are times, like today, when the audience has a difference of opinion on a topic. Some feel I should concentrate on getting elected before I worry about others... Do you agree?", Yoshida-san asked, a bit dejected.

"You have my support.", I smiled a bit.

"Thank you. It's encouraging to know that my message has won you over. Besides, I have grown quite accustomed to those types of reactions... Although... I don't know if that is necessarily a good thing. Regardless, no matter what they say, I must continue on...", Yoshida smiled and nodded. We both went our separate ways, agreeing to meet up again for another speech.

MAY 10TH (TUESDAY 5/10)(MORNING)

I was in class, listening to Mr. Inui's lecture.

"You have exams starting tomorrow. It's too late to cram, so don't even try it. Now then, picking up from last time... The end of the Heian period marks the rise of the samurai, which I'm sure you've all been waiting for. As described in "The Tale of the Heike," it was a time when all that was great would fall from grace. It wasn't unusual for the heroes of yesterday to be struck down as rebels of the present day. By the way, sympathizing with the loser or the weak is called "magistrate's patronage.' That term came from the name of the position that a certain hero held. Now then, Koga-san. Who do you think is the origin of the term 'magistrate's patronage"?", Mr. Inui asked.

"Minamoto no Yoshitsune.", I answered with a low voice.

"Exactly. "Magistrate" was Minamoto no Yoshitsune's title, which later became his nickname. Although Yoshitsune helped defeat the Taira, he was driven out by his brother and killed himself. However, in the centuries that followed, Yoshitsune became more popular as a tragic hero.", Mr. Inui explained. " Rather than siding with the one who has overwhelming power, people prefer the underdog opposing them. It's sort of like rooting for a minor-league baseball team instead of an all-star, major-league one."

Were you an underdog during your time, Ezio?

No one knew me, young assassin. I was mostly in the shadows, so I can say for a fact I was an underdog. Maybe even more of the shadow of the underdog...

MAY 10TH (TUESDAY 5/10)(AFTER SCHOOL)

I went to Yongen-jaya to stock up on the drinks from the vending machine near the bathhouse. After that, I got a text from Ryuji to hang out, which I agreed to. I went back to school in my gym clothes so we could meet up there and train. We met up at the front of the school and made our way to our training spot.

"Man, we really don't got a good place to train, huh... I mean, we'd prolly run into Nakaoka and them if we stuck around here. You got any ideas?", Ryuji asked.

"What about where me and Akira stay? We can run around the neighborhood or just train in his room.", I suggested.

"You seriously think we'd get any trainin' done there? I bet we'd just end up eatin' ice cream and playin' video games all day long. That's just kinda what happens, y'know? ...Eh, I guess it won't hurt to peek 'round the gym. If they ain't there, maybe we can-", Ryuji was about to continue, but we heard a grunt from nearby.

"Hrgh...!", it was Nakaoaka's voice.

"... Nakaoka?", Ryuji called as we both went towards his voice. There was Nakaoka being held down by two other students and Takeishi.

"What's going on here?", I mumbled with knitted brows.

"Takeishi? The hell you guys doin'...?", Ryuji asked.

"We just have a few questions for Nakaoka here. It's none of your business.", Takeishi grumbled.

"That doesn't look like questioning, that looks like punching a guy in the face.", I stated with a pissed off look.

"Yeah... So, what, you gonna ask him questions with your fists? And anyways, ain't a three-on-one kinda cowardly?", Ryuji scoffed.

"The only coward here is Nakaoka! All the sh*t Kamoshida put us through is his fault... He was telling that bastard secrets about us the whole time...!", Takeishi yelled.

"Huh? That's a load of bull!", Ryuji retorted.

"Can you guys not fight your own teammate and trust Nakaoka for once?", I rolled my eyes at them.

"Y-Yeah! I mean, the track team's comin' back, so you don't gotta fight!", Ryuji explained.

"... Sh-Shut up! I'm telling you, this piece of sh*t sold us out! How do you think Kamoshida found out about your parents, Sakamoto?", Takeishi exploded. Ryuji looked surprised, gritting his teeth. The other two guys looked equally as mad.

"He's gotta be a snitch!"

"H-Hold up!", Ryuji ran up in front of Nakaoka.

"Out of the way, Sakamoto. We'll beat the sh*t outta you too if we need to.", Takeishi growled. I was about to clock Takeishi in the head, but Ryuji gave me look to signal that he would be fine. I retracted my hand slowly, hating that he wouldn't let me help. It was still his decision, so I had to respect it.

"If you think that's gonna make you feel better, go for it ...But you're gonna wish you didn't. Trust me, it feels real bad lookin' back on shitty stuff you've done.", Ryuji mumbled.

"Huh?", one of the guys looked at the other, the other one shrugged.

"Look... Even if Nakaoka was workin' with Kamoshida... ain't it fine now? The bastard's gone, so you guys can just put this crap behind you. There's no reason to fight, yeah...?", Ryuji reasoned.

"We can't keep people around who're gonna try and undermine our team.", Takeishi grumbled.

"But... I didn't do anything. I wasn't working with Kamoshida. No matter how much you hit me, my answer's gonna stay the same.", Nakaoka retorted.

"Oh yeah...? We've got proof. Yamauchi told us all about it.", Takeishi revealed.

"... Yamauchi?", Ryuji breathed.

"C'mon Takeishi, we gotta get out of here. It'd be real bad if anyone else showed up.", one of the boys pointed out.

"...Nakaoka. Sh*t like you isn't welcome on our new track team. You'd better remember that.", Takeishi grumbled as he left with the other two guys. Nakaoka sat there, a little stunned.

"... You OK? What the hell was all that?", Ryuji asked Nakaoka.

"Just stay out of this, Sakamoto. It has nothing to do with you.", Nakaoka snapped.

"But...", Ryuji began, but Nakaoka continued.

"When you hit Kamoshida, you were really hitting all of us who tried so hard to endure his bullsh*t. You might've felt relieved, but it only made life harder for us... Cause of you, we lost the one place we could vent our frustrations... the one place we could really belong. Tensions got pretty high after that... and things've just been kinda rough from then on. ...You really think it's all fine now, huh? Well what if I told you they're right about me...? Would you still think it's "fine" if I was the one who told Kamoshida about your parents?", Nakaoka snapped.

"...... Yeah. If you told him, you told him. I'm over all that stuff with my parents anyways. Besides... I've realized something, Nakaoka. I might've messed up with Kamoshida back then, but hangin' on to the past ain't gonna help anythin'. I'm just gonna focus on bein' myself now... on bein' free.", Ryuji explained.

"What're you talking about...? Free, huh? Haha...", Nakaoka let out a dejected laugh, walking off and leaving Ryuji and I in the area.

"Rika... You get what I'm tryin' to say, yeah?", Ryuji asked.

"More or less.", I shrugged with a small smile.

"Right? He's the one who wasn't makin' any sense. I guess bein' free is like... It's like how... I feel when I'm talkin' to you.", Ryuji revealed with a grateful grin.

"Can... you explain that?", I mumbled.

"Uhhh, I don't know what else I gotta say. I just feel... free.", Ryuji shrugged.

"... Huh?", I quirked my head to the side, teasing Ryuji a bit.

"What, we stuck on repeat or something? Hahaha!", Ryuji laughed, slapping me on the back lightly. His laugh was contagious, making me giggle lightly with him.

I never thought I would be this... carefree...

Life has many surprises, young assassin...

MAY 10TH (TUESDAY 5/10)(EVENING)

(outfit)

I went back to Yoshida-san's usual spot, finding him starting his usual speech. We shared pleasantries and he gave me my sign to bring people's attention to the speech. Before we started, I taped Yoshida-san

"Can you... teach me how to give speeches?", I asked.

It could help with negotiation with shadows.

Good thinking, young assassin...

"...Teach you how to give speeches? Why?", Yoshida-san asked.

"I want to do what you do.", I vaguely explained.

"I'd love to help you, though... how shall I teach you? ...It's time for my speech. Let's talk about this later.", Yoshida-san left me at that. He started his speech while I waved my sign around.

"And while our society appears to be prosperous, many of our young people are quietly suffering. They lack jobs, security, savings... The next generation will lead us into the future and yet they have no plan for how to arrive there.", Yoshida-san's speech was cut off by a loud shout from somewhere.

"...Watch where you're going, you little sh*t!", one middle-aged man yelled.

"You bumped into me, you old goat!", a young man yelled back.

"This isn't good...", Yoshida-san whispered.

"Let's mediate, try and calm them down.", I suggested quietly.

"Yes, let's. Good citizens, please stop fighting! What is the point of bickering over such a trivial matter?", Yoshida-san called out to the two men.

"This is none of your business!", the middle-aged man yelled.

"Yeah, seriously. Just shut up!", the younger man joined in.

"What's with this guy...?", the middle-aged man mumbled as the two left the area.

"...Now if you'll please excuse me, I must return to my speech. Together, we can create a bright future for the next generation.", Yoshida-san continued, but another man in flashy clothes came by.

"Ugh, so righteous... That really annoys me. Enough of your arrogance, "No-Good Tora"!", The man yelled.

"Wha--!?", Yoshida-san gasped at the name.

What kind of a name is "No-Good Tora"?

"As if anyone would actually vote for YOU! Are you planning to embezzle funds again? Or maybe criticize one of your constituents again? You criminal!", the man called out.

"No...! T-That was... all in the past...", Yoshida-san mumbled. I came up to him and signaled him to stop the speech short, since he seemed uncomfortable. We grabbed our stuff and went somewhere private.

"I've gone and done it again.", Yoshida-san mumbled.

"What he did was campaign obstruction.", I pointed out with a knitted brow.

"Yes, but I cannot say that to the crowd before an election... Regardless, whenever someone calls me "No-Good Tora," I panic. I went through quite an ordeal 20 years ago...", Yoshida-san explained. "...Let me explain. I used to be a member of the National Diet. I was elected during the rise of We were "Kuramoto Children." backed by powerful Diet members. This was about 20 years ago. I was very inexperienced back then, both as a politician, as well as a human being. That inexperience led me to be involved in a series of major political scandals. People refer to my blunders as "No-Good Tora's Three Strikes." The first was being caught missing a legislative meeting to take a personal vacation. Then, I was accused of embezzling a large sum of money from the party... giving me two strikes. Finally, I called a voter an idiot at an open forum, which resulted in scandal... and strike three. I was out... and branded a washed-up politician. You said you wanted to become a member of the Diet. But do you see the man before you?"

He's done some questionable things in the past... But he is actively trying to change himself and the world. That's conviction.

"Do you really want to receive my guidance?", Yoshida-san asked.

"You seem to have conviction, and that's what matters to me.", I nodded.

"I'm happy to hear that, however... Everyone says I have no chance to get elected, so why come to me?", Yoshida-san questioned.

"Yoshida-san, you should have confidence in yourself. That's how conviction starts.", I smiled a bit.

"*chuckle* You're doing a good job of cheering me up... The most important part about giving a good speech is believing in yourself. Perhaps one day, I will believe in myself... again. But you sure got me there. You're a strange young woman, Koga-chan. Very well. If learning how to give a great speech is what you seek, then I'd be happy to instruct you. In exchange, I would like for you to continue assisting me. Let's get started, shall we?", Yoshida-san made a deal with me.

??? ???TH (??? ?/?) (???) (INTERROGATION ROOM)

I stopped talking and took a breath.

"Staging your crimes with calling cards... It's hard to believe that students could manage this alone. An adult for example, someone talented enough to move people with words-perhaps they coached you... Isn't that right!?", Niijima-san pointed out.
