Chapter 23: Setbacks (Short)

MAY 18TH (WEDNESDAY 5/18)(AFTER SCHOOL)

After talking with the others, I went all the way to the weapon shop to buy new gear for everyone. I put the gear in a large duffle bag, carrying it with me out the door. I then went through the velvet room door next to the weapon shop, reaching the prison. Igor looked at me with his strange eyes and his unmoving grin.

(Caroline - Justine)

"I see your rehabilitation is going well. You must surely be accustomed to infiltrating Palaces by now?"

"Somewhat...", I sighed.

"Regardless, you have yet to obtain a truly acceptable number of Personas. This is not the full potential of the power of the wild card. Hm, I suppose this is a prime opportunity to help further your rehabilitation along. Don't worry... This assignment is not mandatory. Think of it almost as a test of strength.", Igor explained.

"Great... as if I don't deal with enough assignments at school... What a waste of time... Whatever, what is it?", I huffed. The twin wardens turned slightly turned to me to speak.

"We will have you bring us the mask we specify. You just gotta show us the Persona we ask for! First off... we would like for you to bring us a Jack Frost. That's too easy, Justine! It should be a challenge. Hmmm... I want it to have Mabufu too! You got that, Inamte? Bring us a Jack Frost with Mabufu. Very well. We ask for a Jack Frost with Mabufu. Please speak to us again when you have it."

"This will not be mandatory for your rehabilitation, but you will be handsomely rewarded for it. I encourage you to at least try your hand at this.", Igor encouraged. I nodded silently and kept the assignment in mind. I left the velvet room, reaching the real world with ease. I decided to visit Takemi in her clinic for a trial.

It would be get some more options for medicine.

After entering Takemi's clinic, I found a man and his daughter waiting outside for a checkup. The girl looked extremely uncomfortable, clutching her chest and trying to breathe to the best of her ability. Takemi turned to the man with questions.

"...So, why come here? Aren't you under the care of another hospital?"

"I've heard rumors about this place. I'd like for you to examine her. She was diagnosed with bronchitis, but the medicine she was given hasn't been working at all. She has a fever that won't go away, and she's losing weight because she's not hungry...", the man explained, worry written all over his face.

"A young girl losing weight is definitely not good. You should go to a bigger hospital. I can't provide a thorough examination here.", Takemi advised.

"We've been going to a big hospital! A university hospital in East Shinjuku! But all they tell us is that it's persistent bronchitis...!", the man huffed, desperate. Takemi turned fully to the man this time, a brow raised.

"...A university hospital in East Shinjuku?"

"The doctor there preforms exams like he's on an assembly line. I think he's famous or something...", the man trailed off.

"A famous doctor, huh...? I'm just a general practitioner out here in the sticks. As you can see, I don't even have any staff.", Takemi lamented. The man took a step forward to Takemi, looking like his world was about to crash. I took a step forward in case the man got any closer to Takemi's personal space.

Calm yourself, he seems respectable...

Yes, *seems*...

"W-Wait! I've heard there's a medicine that can only be acquired here...! Please! I'll pay you! Please, at least just examine her!"

"H-Hold on.", Takemi urged the man to calm down, but the little girl started coughing again."Doctor... My chest really hurts...", the girl muttered weakly. I felt a pang of worry in my heart, rippling all around me in a terrible aura. I took a step towards the girl and put a hand on her back to try and soothe the girl. Takemi looked at me with a sort of look that appreciated I was at least trying.

I don't really know how to deal with children... I was a child, sure. But far from a normal one..."Well, I'm sure Dr. Takemi will help.", I stated, looking Takemi dead in the eyes, hoping she would actually agree to help. Takemi stuttered a bit when I kept eye contact, but still held her ground a bit.

"W-What...!?"

"Doctor...!", the man pleaded once more. Takemi turned from the man to the girl, to me, to the floor. She sighed and nodded.

"... Fine.", Takemi began to examine the girl, checking her vitals and asking questions. "Is your vision blurry? How about your throat, does it hurt...? Hm. No signs of swelling. Are you sure you've told me everything about her symptoms and treatments you've tried so far?"

"Yes, I'm sure!", the man nodded, very confident in his answer.

"Hmmm...", Takemi got up and made a call on her phone. "Hello, Uehara-san? Is Dr. Scheitzer there? There's something I'd like to ask him about a case that was in last month's medical journal.", after the phone call ended, she turned to her notes and murmured. "I see. Guess the ones in stock will have to do...", she then turned to me. "There's a shelf by the reception desk. Bring the contents of the second drawer into the exam room. You'll need to help me administer the medicine. Also, bring the beaker with the red label in the fridge, a towel, wash basin, and measuring spoon... Well, what are you waiting for? Get moving!"

I guess I'm a nurse for an hour or so...

I ran to the back room and got the supplies, helping the girl shortly after. Takemi took the man and the girl inside the examination room to check on the girl's vitals once again, and thankfully, she looked a lot better.

"Th-Thank you so much! I didn't expect her to recover so quickly...", the man seemed so relieved.

He... sounds like a good father... I kind of envy the girl...

"It was a very unique strain of an infectious disease. It can't be detected by conventional exams. I temporarily suppressed the symptoms. We'll make adjustments as her condition improves. Ok, that'll be one million yen for today.", Takemi stated out of nowhere, making both the man and well as myself turn pale.

"A-A million yen...!? Th-That's outrageous! You're completely taking advantage of...... I mean, all right... I agreed to pay. You don't... take credit cards... do you? I'll go withdraw some cash right now!", the man declared, very serious about his daughter's health.

"Huh? Wait, you're actually going to pay?", Takemi went quiet, then continued with a another question. "By the way, that famous doctor you mentioned earlier... Was it Medical Chief of Staff Oyamada?"

"Yes... are you familiar with him?"

"... I knew it. In that case, I'll make this free of charge.", Takemi revealed.

"F-Free!?", the man gasped.

"...Hehe.", Takemi chuckled. I felt my face go warm watching Takemi seem so happy.

"You seem happy..."

"Doesn't it feel good? Healing his patient without permission... By the way, thanks to your outburst earlier... I'm going to perform a very special exam on you today...", I gulped at Takemi's decision, feeling sweat rolling down my back. The man looked at us, a little confused.

"So, is she your... assistant? She seems awfully young..."

"Yes, my assistant... guinea pig. She's about to put in a LOT of hard work today. Aren't you?", Takemi smirked at me, making me even more nervous than before.

She does love torturing you~

You are having too much fun.

After confirming everything with the girl, taking the "special trial" (which was a bunch of medicines that had varies tastes), and buying more medicines and other remedies for the group, I left. I passed by the vending machines, buying some of the special drinks there. After that, I returned to the café, made myself some coffee, and went to bed soon after.

MAY 19TH (THURSDAY 5/19)(AFTER SCHOOL)

The group met up, quickly going into Madarame's Palace. I handed everyone their gear. We prepared ourselves and made our way inside the museum.

After running around the museum, almost getting caught because of Mona being greedy with an annoyingly shiny vase, catching some pretty cool Personas, and fighting shadows left and right. We made it to a courtyard area, covered in lasers to prevent any of us from passing to what like a giant sliding door-like gate. The gate looked really intricate, with the painting on the front displaying an extravagant peacock on the front. (A/N: I forgot the word for peacock, so I typed in google, and I quote, "Colorful Land Bird Fan Thing"... I remembered the name after a few seconds of my dumbass-ery.

"What the hell!?", Skull grumbled.

"Are these... infrared lasers? There's no way we can get past them...", Panther muttered, looking worried.

"This level of security only proves there's something worth protecting up ahead.", Mona analyzed the lasers. I looked at the sign on the side, reading it out loud.

""All personnel: This door can only via the security room that lies beyond it... Please be cautious, as it is impossible to open from the outside.", well, this is going to be a problem... How are we going to open this thing? Hell, how are getting past the lasers first...?"

"Wait... That door... I think I've seen that pattern somewhere...", Mona mumbled. I looked at the giant doors again before snapping my fingers.

"That's the door Madarame has in his shack. The one with the huge lock on the front.", I nodded.

"Right... guys, let's head back!"

"Huh? Why!?", Skull asked, a little confused.

"Mona and I know what real-world door this is based on. If my thinking is correct, there is another way to open this, from the outside... Let's not waste time and go.", I explained.
