Chapter 9: Quiet After The Storm
A/N:
Thought I would add some music to keep you guys entertained during all this :) Message me some good music to listen to, I'm running out!
END OF AUTHOR'S NOTE!
APRIL 23RD (SATURDAY 4/23)(MORNING)
I was minding my own business in class, when the teacher called on my name.
"Miss Koga."
"Yes?", I mumbled with a straight face.
"Here's a question; What event did Emperor Nero add to the Olympics so that he could participate?"
"He added singing.", I answered and went back to what I was doing. I heard a bunch of the students in class whisper my name. I didn't stop them, it was a waste of time anyways.
After class, I found Ryuji and Akira outside. I walked up to them and leaned against the wall, looking down with a slightly bored look. Ryuji tapped me on my shoulder.
"Yes?", I mumbled.
"Have you seen Kamoshida?", Ryuji asked.
"No and I don't really care about what happens to him at this point. I just want this to end.", I mumbled. Ryuji asked Akira, but he also said he didn't see him.
"You really think he changed?", Ryuji muttered.
"I hope so.", Akira sighed.
"Especially since I am now tired as hell...", I groaned. Suddenly, we heard a familiar voice. It was Ms. Kawakami.
"Oh, perfect timing! Study hall will be held instead of PE today. I'm letting you know just in case you haven't heard. Mr. Kamoshida has taken the day off. THIS caught my attention.
"He ain't here...?", Ryuji gasped.
"Is he sick or something?", I asked with a raised eyebrow, acting like I knew nothing.
"Don't tell anyone that you heard this from me...", Ms. Kawakami began.
Hooo~~ Boy. Here she goes, spreading the word~! But I guess we DO need this right now.
"But we recieved word that Mr. Kamoshida is placing himself under suspension. It's such an important time before the tournament too... Principal Kobayakawa went to talk to him about it, but he supposedly wasn't making any sense...", Ms. Kawakami laid out the news before us. I was shocked that this happened, but I expected a bit of change, but not that he was going to suspend himself.
"Wait, a suspension!?", Ryuji gasped. I drew my hand back and hit him on the head with a bored look.
"O-Oww! What the hell was that for!?", Ryuji hissed.
"Don't say it so loud. No one knows yet...", I sighed.
"The talks about your expulsions may be put on hold too... I don't know too much about it though... Anyway, I've relayed what's going on to you.", with that, Ms. Kawakami left.
"Looks like something happened... At least it sounds different from a mental shutdown... I guess all we can do is wait...", Ryuji sighed.
"True. Well, smell you later, gotta do some shit.", I mumbled. I left and exited the school.
Might as well walk around Shibuya...
I took the train to Shibuya and went to Central street. I had the Treasure with me so I could sell it. I turned the corner, and found a glowing blue door in the alleyway.
The velvet room? Here too?
I decided it wouldn't hurt to visit. I went through the door and I found myself in the velvet room, greeted by the snarky wardens and Igor. I fixed up my Personas and left. I had Ezio, Agathion, Berith, Mandrake, and Pixie. I began to walk, but heard a voice in my head. It was clear, male, and held confidence.
"It seems you have opened up, Young Assassin...", I turned around and saw Ezio in the alley with me. I looked to see people frozen in place.
They can't see him that way....
"Ezio... How are you here...?", I muttered.
"I live within you. It is no surprise I can trickle into the real world... And I am not the only one present...", with a flap on his strong wings, all of my Personas appeared in front of me.
"W-wow... But, why are you guys talking to me now?", I asked.
"They will not speak, but I will on their behalf sometimes. You will not see them as often in the real world, but I will make sure to appear on occasions, even if you choose to execute me. After all, those in the Brotherhood protect one another. Whenever you are lost, I will guide you as much as possible, Young Assassin.", Ezio made the rest of the Personas disappear as he bowed down before me.
"I... understand. Just try to talk to me when I'm alone.", I advised.
"As you wish... I will not appear when you around others. Also, I can speak to you through your mind, but it is weaker that way, but when it is necessary, I will use it. I may offer tips along the way. For now, my time is running low. Farewell, and may the Brotherhood be your guiding light.", with a flash of black and red, the world was back to normal. I sighed and left to the weapons shop. I entered the shop and dropped the medal on the table.
"How much would this sell for?", I asked.
"Hm... around 10,000+ YEN, being conservative. Wanna sell it?", The shop keeper asked.
"Yeah.", I muttered as we exchanged the money. I thanked the man and left.
Now I'm bored... Ryuji might be free.
I pulled out my phone and called Ryuji. A few rings and he answers.
"Yo! Rika! Didn't expect you to call."
"Don't get used to it, I just don't feel like texting."
"Isn't texting easier though...?"
"I don't feel like moving my fingers, but I do want to go on a run. Help your trainee out here?"
"No problem, I was thinkin' of goin' anyways. Meet me at school, I'll be waiting!", with that, the call ended. I quickly went back to the café, got my things, and found Ryuji in his running area. I changed and began to run with him. We spent quite a while running, and we decided to stop when the sun was close to setting.
"Ugh, dammit! I wanna move better, but I just can't... I was trainin' for nationals back in the day... but now I totally suck balls.", Ryuji groaned. I let out a noise of interest as I was leaning against the metal fence, trying not to die. We suddenly heard a really irritated voice coming from somewhere.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?", a group of three dudes came up to us, all wearing track suits.
"Nakaoka... Takeishi...", Ryuji muttered.
Uh, who?
Nakaoka and Takeishi, I believe.
Oh, I forgot you're in my mind, Ezio.
Focus, Young Assassin.
"...Running, huh? I saw you from the window.", the boy, Nakaoka as I learned, growled.
"What, you gonna try to come crawling back to the track team?", Takeishi sassed.
"Huh? H-Hell no...", Ryuji mumbled with a pained expression.
"Sure... Speaking of which, this was your secret training spot, wasn't it? Well, it's our spot now. You know, us. The former track team.", Nakaoka pointed.
"We don't even have a locker room anymore, thanks to someone I know.", Takeishi muttered. Ryuji went silent.
Interject. Things can get out of hand at any moment.
"Hey, we are not here to fight, as you can see. So keep the poisen-dipped comments to yourself.", I stated with a glare at both parties.
"We ain't fightin'...", Ryuji sighed, but looked grateful.
"Yeah, this isn't anything like a fight. Not even close. Hold on, aren't you that transfer student? With your brother? You're really gonna hang around with loser?", Nakaoka asked.
"Well, this "Loser" has helped me quite a bit, unlike you. So, keep your opinion to yourself, because it is a waste of time just hearing you speak.", I smirked. Nakaoka scoffed and turned away from me.
You are quite rude, as I have come to learn.
Thanks, I try.
"You better watch out. he'll hit you the second he gets pissed off. I heard his dad was the same way. Like father like son, right? Now that's some scary shit.", the other ex-track team member shuddered.
"That don't got anything to do with this...", Ryuji balled his fist in anger.
He is shaken. Help the boy.
"Calm down, Ryuji. They are just words from a lowlife.", I glared at the guy.
"Who you callin'-!"
"You. I'm calling you a lowlife. People who openly talk about others that are right in front of them are lowlives. Pure and simple.", I stated as I raised my eyebrow at him, showing him that I didn't care what he will do to me, because I could do ten times as much damage back. The guy gritted his teeth but backed off.
"Look, back then, I...", Ryuji muttered.
"I don't need to hear your excuses. Everyone was going through the same bullshit with Kamoshida. The beatings, the impossible exercises... but we put up with all of it for the track team. But no. You had to go and f*ck all that up! Man, I was stupid for ever thinking you were my teammate... That's all I have to say to you. I'm outta here.", Nakaoka turned and left, the others trailing behind.
"... I nearly smacked him when he was talkin' about my dad... I haven't changed at all... But y'know... you actually helped me calm down a little. I'm glad you were here with me. Thanks, Rika!", Ryuji smiled and raised his hand for a high-five. I returned it with the smallest smile I can muster.
Good. Your bond has grown. Keeping connections and creating a loyal friend is essential to keep an Assassin well rounded in many aspects.
Yay for me. Do I have to keep doing this though? Social interaction is tiring.
You must. It is also to make you stronger in the Metaverse, so keep it up. Do not falter.
Ugh, got it.
"...Let's call it a day.", Ryuji nodded.
"Yeah, I guess we should. My legs are about to give out at any second.", I groaned. We suddenly heard voices from afar.
"Hey, Nakaoka! Why didn't you kick his a*s!?"
"... What?"
"The hell's your problem!?"
"Now they're just arguing with each other... I should stay out of it. Anyways, nice trainin' with you.", Ryuji waved goodbye and jogged off. I grabbed my things and left for the cafe. I went inside and sat down on one of the stools. I felt my phone vibrate to life, so I picked it up and checked the messages.
------------------------------
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: I went to see Shiho today.
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: And I told her we settled things with Kamoshida.
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: She still hasn't regained consciousness... but I had to go make amends.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Whaddya mean? You didn't do anything wrong, Ann.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Right, Akira? Rika?
🤓The Ultimate Bro🤓: It's not your fault, Ann.
You: Yeah, stop making this your doing. I will hit you upside the head if you do it again.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: She hits like a truck, don't test her.
🤓The Ultimate Bro🤓: I second that fact.
You: At least I'm strong 😏
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: But I wasn't there when she needed help. I'm a failure as a friend...
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: I have to do all I can to make up for that, starting now.
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: Otherwise I don't think I'll be able to move on.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Man, I didn't know you were so passionate.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: I totally didn't notice that back in middle school.
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: I think it's because of you guys. I'm a little embarrassed though...
Red Kitty🐱💃💋: Anyway, Ryuji, Akira, Rika... I hope we can keep helping each other out from now on too.
------------------------------
I put down my phone and watched Sojiro work.
"Uh, need something, kid?", Sojiro asked when he noticed I was staring.
"I'm bored. I like to watch others when I'm bored.", I stated.
"Ah... Well, are you free to talk?", Sojiro offered.
Accept the offer. It is important to get to know the person providing you a home.
I hate that you are right.
"Sure.", I nodded as I put my hands under my chin, waiting for him to finish cleaning up. Sojiro finished all of his chores and sat beside me on one of the stools.
"Hey, how's school? You're not causing any trouble, are you?", Sojiro asked.
Let's see. If entering f*cked up worlds in people's minds and stealing everything in it, sending calling cards and almost getting expelled is considered trouble, then yes.
"No, I'm not causing any trouble.", I lied.
"Good. I've gotta report to your brothers probation officer twice a month, and I have to report to your previous adoption agency once a month. It's already a pain in the a*s as is, so please don't make me have to write even more crap. Got that? This society is kept in check by laws and authority figures. You can go and get yourself killed if you want, but don't go dragging other people into your mess. The last thing we need is more idiots like you roaming around.", Sojiro scolded me for no apparent reason.
"Now that... That hurts.", I fake-pouted.
But damn man! Why does this guy hate me?
He does not resent you.
How do you know that?
I can sense it. He is harsh, but he is just worried about you and your brother.
That sure is a weird way to show worry.
Look who is talking.
Ouch, not you too, Ezio...
I am you. I can be snarky as well.
Yeah, yeah...
I snapped out of my dazed state when I saw Sojiro put his phone away.
Damn, didn't hear the call!
You are smart, I'm sure you can find out who he is talking to someday.
"As you can see, I'm pretty damn busy both at work and in my private life. If you could lend a hand, it'd really be a great help...", Sojiro smirked as he showed me an apron, telling me that staying here isn't as free as I thought.
" *sigh*... alright.", I mumbled.
"Now we're talking. Either way, I won't ask you to work for free. If you agree to help me, then... I'll teach you how to make the perfect cup of coffee. Not a bad trade, eh?", Sojiro offered
"Sounds... interesting.", I muttered.
At least, as interesting as making coffee as it can get.
"All right. Looks like we've got ourselves a deal.", Sojiro nodded.
??? (???)(???)(INTERROGATION ROOM)
I sighed and put my head back, letting gravity control my head.
"You may call yourselves phantom thieves, but you're still minors. Someone had to support you two. Furthermore, they did so knowing you were part of that group... Isn't the owner of that cafe an accomplice of yours!?", Niijima-San questioned. I pointed at Akira, showing that I was getting tired again. Akira began to explain on my behalf, while I added some other things.
APRIL 23RD (SATURDAY 4/23)(EVENING)
"I'll be counting on your help. See ya later.", with that, Sojiro left the cafe. I locked the door and went upstairs. I found Akira and Morgana training using a chair and the beam on the ceiling. Well, just Akira. Morgana was just an instructer of sorts.
"You know there is a facility called a gym, right?", I sassed.
"I'm broke and you know it.", Akira grumbled.
"Well, good luck getting in shape then.", I sighed and went up to my room. I wrote everything in my report diary and crashed into bed.
APRIL 24TH (SUNDAY 4/24)(MORNING)
It was Sunday, meaning it was a weekend. I could do whatever I wanted without the judgement of others for not being busy. But I was busy, preparing for any other future events to come as a Phantom Thief and Spy. I went down to the café area, where the TV was set up. I turned on the TV to see an online home shopping program. They were serving a number of (PARTY IN A CAN), which was my favorite drink on the planet. (A/N: I don't remember if it was a drink or not, just roll with it :) )
I miss it. I'm ordering it, no one can stop me.
I called the program and they said it would arrive in a few days.
I got bored, so I went to the UNDERGROUND WALKWAY. I walked around and found a small stall that sold healthy drinks.
Meh, I don't need it.
You do.
Why?
It makes you healthier.
No, it could be a lie.
Doesn't hurt to try.
What are you, their advertiser?
No, I am your guide. It will help you physically and mentally. Take it.
I hate you.
Everyone in the Brotherhood say that to one another, but they never mean it~
Stop.
Make me.
Ughhhhhh...
I caved and bought a "Beauty Aojiru". I drank it and tasted like shit, but I knew for a fact that Ezio was gonna bug me if I didn't drink it all. I chugged the rest and tossed the cup into the trash. I decided to go watch a movie right then since I haven't seen one since I got here. I went to CENTRAL STREET and bought a ticket to see an big production action movie.
Hm, after watching this movie, I feel a lot more BOLD then usual.
That is an effect from your Persona, me.
How?
Well, Personas make it possible for you to be more aware of your attributes that help you throughout your life. When you do normal activities like this in the real world, a certain part of your personality grows more than others around you. The same happens to all Persona users.
Well, how neat.
It is for you especially. An assassin and spy need to be almost perfect in many aspects. Proficiency, Guts, Charm, Knowledge, Kindness, all the things that make you, a natural Spy and Assassin, blend in more and less suspicious.
So, I have to get them as high as possible?
It is necessary, yes.
Alright, I guess.
As I walked back home, I passed the central crossroad. I heard whispering all around me as I put my head in my hoodie, head held down.
"The trains stopped? Was it another one of those psychotic breakdowns?"
"Another minister has resigned? What is going on..."
"How stupid do you have to be to commit adultery?"
"They must be nuts... Swinging that knife around on a train..."
"There are too many crazy people! Where are all the sane people?"
I finally made it to the cafe and I embraced the warmth of the store and plopped down on a stool. I got a message from Ryuji.
------------------------------
Troublemaker Blondie💀: You heard anything about stuff happening to Kamoshida?
You: No. What's wrong? Something on your mind?
Troublemaker Blondie💀: I guess I prolly should've just asked you about this at school.
You: Did something happen?
Troublemaker Blondie💀: I dunno, I'm just feeling kinda anxious.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: I keep thinking about how even with all you did... we might still end up getting expelled.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: My mom's totally gonna suffer if that happens...
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Plus, if we couldn't even help Ann and Suzui...
You: We have to believe that we did the right thing.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Sorry, I guess now's not really the time to be getting all down in the dumps
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Anyways, I'm feeling a little better now that I talked to you about this. Thanks, Rika.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Oh, and don't tell Ann I was doubting us, mkay?
Troublemaker Blondie💀: She won't have anyone to rely on if we're getting all worried about this shit.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: Well, seeya!
You: 🖖 May the force be with you.
Troublemaker Blondie💀: 🖖🤣
------------------------------
Sojiro came up to me and dropped a key in my hand.
"I won't stop you from going out past curfew. I'm not your dad, after all. I know you guys have lives too. Just stay out of trouble.", Sojiro grumbled.
"Got it.", I nodded and put the key in my bag. I pulled out the book that I got from the library, ZORRO, THE OUTLAW. I read until about halfway and went to bed soon after.
APRIL 25TH (MONDAY 4/25)(ON THE TRAIN)
I found a seat on the train and completed ZORRO, THE OUTLAW. It was a good book, and it gave me a fuzzy feeling in my chest. I made it school and decided it may be good to listen to the lecture at some point.
I mean, Knowledge, I guess?
Yes, Young Assassin. Knowledge is key.
"I was reading the essays you turned in the other day, and everyone's writing is so sloppy! "I could care less" indicates that you still have some cares left to give! It's "I COULDN'T care less"! I've seen this a lot these days, where people are using a phrase differently from its real meaning. One word I often hear misused is the Japanese "kakushinhan," used now to mean a crime done in cold blood. Like the word "literally," the real meaning of kakushinhan is pretty much the opposite of how it's used. Do you know what it is, Koga-san?", Ms. Kawakami asked me all of a sudden.
"Well, as far as I know, the correct way to use it is when someone did something with the conviction that they are right.", I answered as I absentmindedly traced circles on the table while looking at Ms. Kawakami.
"That's right. A kakushinhan is when someone takes an action, believing that it's right. So if someone "raised their hand against another in kakushinhan," they thought it was right to do so.", Ms. Kawakami explained with a smile. The students began whispering again about me.
Are they gonna keep doing that every time I say something right?
I suppose a good reputation is a good thing.
Meh, never really cared.
"Kakushinhan was originally a term that referred to a crime driven by moral or political conviction. These days it seems like the wrong usage is becoming more commonly accepted though.", Ms. Kawakami talked on as I drifted into my own thoughts.
Taking action with a conviction that what you're doing is right... Ezio, when you were still an Assassin, did that apply to you?
Hard to say, Young Assassin... My memories of past have been of nothing but missions. But I don't do things without knowing it was right, so it may apply to me.
After class, I went to the library to return ZORRO, THE OUTLAW, and took THE ALLURING DANCER instead. I remembered that I needed to do some tests for Takemi, so I made my way to the clinic. When I made it there, I got an appointment and went into the examination room. Takemi came in with a clipboard and a cup of weird liquid. She gave it to me and sat down.
"...Here you go. I made various adjustments to the previous drug, based on your trial results. All right, drink it down in one gulp.", Takemi instructed.
"Cheers.", I mumbled as I chugged the cup in one try. It had a powerful taste, both bitter and sour, that was overwhelming. The smell also like someone died in that cup. I suddenly had a hard time breathing. I went dizzy and blacked out in seconds. I didn't know how long I was knocked out, but I woke up with my head feeling like it was split in two.
"Ugh... I feel like dying.", I groaned out loud.
"... Ah, your reaction to it is absolutely perfect. You feel a bit dazed, hm? Yes, I mixed in some special... components. Ok, let's take your temperature and blood pressure. I'm also going to draw some blood. I also want to perform a few motor skill tests. But those might be too much for you right now. Anyway, since we're in the final stages, I should first stabilize the fundamental formula...", Takemi was gonna continue, when a man's voice cut through the air.
"... Oh, so you ARE here.", a police officer barged in. I quickly got up and fixed myself up a bit and silently glared at the guy.
Rude much?
"... I'm in the middle of an examination. I've told you before, Officer. If you want to investigate me, you need to show me a warrant.", Takemi shot.
So, this guy has been here before for an investigation.
They must be suspicious of this woman.
"Hmph! I'm here because we recieved a report. I'll need to see a detailed statement of medical expenses and full medical records. I bet you didn't have enough time to hide any incriminating documents, huh?", the officer taunted.
"... Must be under the orders of the Medical Chief of Staff. Here you go.", Takemi pointed at me with a shrug.
"Huh...?", the officer, as well as myself, looked confused.
"This kid here is my only patient today. If you're asking for her medical expenses, I'm guessing I'm under suspicion of improper billing? But without a receipt, I'd say you've been sent on a wild goose chase.", Takemi mocked.
Ooo, she's good~
Take notes.
Excuse me?
Nothing.
"Wh-What's going on here...?", the officer sputtered.
"You're being manipulated. That "Report" is fictitious. It's nothing but an attempt to harass me.", Takemi stated.
"What!?... Hey, you! What're you doing here!? You don't seem to be sick... Are you up to something illegal!?", the officer asked with a loud voice.
"First of all, I have a name. You can at least call me Miss. Second of all, I have a bad heart.", I lied with a straight face.
"A-A bad heart...?", the officer stuttered.
"She's stressed about taking her entrance exams. I have some drugs that help with relaxation. So, is there anything else? As you can see, I'm pretty busy here.". Takemi asked.
"...Fine. You're infuriating, you know that? Hmph... but I'd expect nothing less from the "Plague." ", the officer left with that remark in the air.
"Plague"...?
" *sigh* I'm so over this...", Takemi grumbled.
Don't pry into the issue just yet. Just nod and agree for now.
"I agree. That was unexpected.", I sighed.
"I think we're going to get along just fine. It's nothing to worry about. I'm sure it was my former superior who made that false report. You eavesdropped on our conversation the other day, remember? He's just trying to put pressure on me... by having the police investigate me and my practice. Anyway, I need to draw some blood. There'll be some mild anemia, but only temporary. You'll be fine... It's part of our "deal," remember?", Takemi smirked. I felt a shudder rush through me as I pouted.
What was that about?
She sounded hot just now...
My, oh my~ Are you confessing to some hidden interests?
Shut it.
You know, I can look into your mind and check~ I am you, after all.
Ugggghhhhh...
I sighed and agreed, my pout still evident.
"I like kids who listen to their superiors. Enjoy your medicine. I'm going to draw more blood than usual... since you're healthy and all...", Takemi smiled.
" *sigh* you're going to be the death of me, Takemi...", I mumbled.
"... Only kidding. Ok, please lie down. You can go home once I'm done.", Takemi nodded. After the examination, I bid Takemi farewell with a nod and left for the café. I found the TV I ordered in my room, which was cool. I looked out the window and noticed the bathhouse a few steps away from the café. I decided to head over, since I needed some cleaning. I went downstairs to see Akira packing some clothes.
"Where are you going?", I asked.
"The bathhouse.", Akira shrugged.
"I was actually planning to go too. Wanna come with?", I offered as I opened the door. Akira nodded with a small smile. As we walked, I noticed that his bag was moving around.
"You took Morgana with you?", I deadpanned.
"I can't leave him alone.", Akira smiled.
"Whatever. Lecturing you is a waste of time...", I grumbled as we entered the bathhouse.
"Is there a female area here?", I mumbled.
"Yeah, it's that way. But there is a unisex one too.", Akira pointed.
"I kinda wanna be alone. Sorry, bro.", I shrugged. I left to the female locker room and went into the bathhouse. It felt warm and amazing. After I was done, I got dressed and left with Akira back to the café. I went up to my room and crashed into bed.
APRIL 26TH (TUESDAY 4/26)(AFTER SCHOOL)
After class, I decided to go make use of my time and go study. I thought the diner in CENTRAL STREET would be a good place to go. After half an hour, I made it to the diner, sitting in a small corner near a window. When the waitress came by, I told her to give me a "Nostalgic Steak" since it was recommended.
Not that I know anything about nostalgia in my orphan days. But Akira's mom made some pretty good dishes.
When the food came by, I ate as I studied all the material from the past few days. For some reason, I felt someone's stare boring in the side of my head. I ignored it for a while, but it was getting annoying. I turned to the window, but there were a lot of people passing by. When I focused on the middle of the crowd, I saw someone I didn't expect to see; it was Goro Akechi, no doubt about it. He was just a distance away from the window, just staring back at me. I looked back at my phone to check the photo I took of him a while back. I confirmed it was definitely him.
Does he know I was there that day when I was listening in to his conversation with Sae Niijima?
Don't panic, Young Assassin. Just slip from his grasp.
How? He has me in his sights.
Just get ready and I will tell you when to exit the vacinaty.
Alright. Please don't blow anything up.
Don't fret.
I paid for the food and grabbed all of my stuff to leave. I stood in front of the door and took a deep breath. I saw Akechi through the windows getting close to the door.
Ready when you are, Ezio.
Go!
I opened the door and I had to catch myself before I tripped; A bird, a hawk or something, suddenly flew past me and went straight for Akechi. It hit him right in the stomach and he doubled over. I stood there in shock for a second.
Now is your chance! Run!
I collected myself and booked it for the café.
How did you do that!?
I have my secrets...
I finally made it to the cafe and I let out a heavy sigh. I fixed myself up and went inside. Sojiro was still working hard as ever.
"Evening. Want me to help around a bit? I'm bored.", I mumbled.
"Sure, I guess. Put on the apron in the back and we'll get started.", Sojiro instructed. I grabbed the green apron and put it on. I turned to Sojiro
"Now then, since you're gonna be working in my store, I'll need to hammer home the basics... You know what I'm talking about, right?", Sojiro asked.
"Making coffee, obviously.", I nodded as I pulled at my hair a bit.
I mean, what else would I be making here? I sure as hell don't make his curry, that stuff tastes like perfection.
"Yup. Glad to see you at least understand that much. This store's not the busiest around, but I'm real particular about how we coffee here. And I'll kick you out no questions asked if you serve a bad cup, you got that?", Sojiro scolded/ instructed. A random customer chipped in all of a sudden.
"Let me tell you, So-chan definitely does things right with his coffee. It goes well with his special curry, I can't help but order the set meal every time.", the female customer gushed.
"What can I say, each of my regulars get an experience personally tailored to them.", Sojiro smiled a bit.
Oh~ He's embarrased~
Stop.
"Can you tell me the key to that wonderful flavor, So-chan? I'd love to make it at home sometime.", the customer asked.
"Sorry, that's a trade secret. You're free to try and guess based on the taste though.", Sojiro apologized.
"Cheapskate. Keeping secrets from me even though you know your food's already stolen my heart...", the woman fake-pouted.
"How about a nice dessert then? It's only three hundred yen.", Sojiro offered. After the woman ate and paid for her food, she left and I was left to my session again.
"When you run a shop, you get all sorts of customers. Knowing their personalities is absolutely vital. That's what being in food service is all about.", Sojiro adviced. We suddenly heard someone come in.
"Welco-", Sojiro was gonna continue, but when he saw a middle-aged man in a black snapback walk in, his face changed from "welcoming stoic" to "disgust at its finest".
"You...", Sojiro grumbled.
"Hello there! It's been quite a while, Sakura-san! I heard you opened up a shop, so here I am! It wouldn't have hurt to mention it to me though. Huh, you've got a real nice location here. Right by the station and everything.", the man smiled. His voice was sweet, too sweet for me though.
"Your order?", Sojiro practically growled.
"No small talk? That's cold. Oh, but this smell... Sure brings back memories! You're still making that curry, huh? I guess you haven't gotten over her yet...", the man shrugged.
Her...? Did someone leave Sojiro?
My guess is as good as yours, Young One.
"Your order, sir?", Sojiro repeated, venom in his tone.
"Haha, so pushy. I just stopped in to say hi today... but I'll be back again soon! Bye.", with that, the man left. The air felt thick with disgust.
"Ugh... I don't know where he caught wind of this place.", Sojiro grumbled.
"That guy seemed suspicious...", I muttered.
"Heh, I guess you have an eye for some things after all. Anyway, if you have time for questions, you have time to be learning about bean types. You're not gonna be any use to me if you can't pick up on the ABCs sometime soon. Besides, men love a girl who knows her coffee. This isn't a bad deal for you.", Sojiro smirked with a closed eyes.
"I-I guess... I want them to like me...", I whispered.
"What was that?", Sojiro asked.
"Nothing! Nothing at all...", I mumbled with a blush.
"If you say so. Heh, if only you were this obedient all the time. Either way, I'm gonna teach you right. That way I'll be able to sit back and relax while you work... Oh, is it time already? Let's start closing up. And no slacking off, you got it?", Sojiro and I got to work.
After learning about customer service from Sojiro, I feel more CONSIDERATE than usual...
After we cleaned up the area, I went to bed with a heavy sigh and head.
APRIL 27TH (WEDNESDAY 4/27)(MORNING)
Ms. Usami was teaching today, and her voice bored me to tears, but I had to focus or another piece of chalk gets thrown at me.
"There's been a lot of dire news lately, with the train accident and the volleyball-team incident. People are theorizing that it's these sudden psychotic breakdowns, but the cause is still unknown... Well, unexplained occurences like these are commonplace in the world of math. For instance... Koga-san. Please look at this.", Ms. Usami showed me a picture of lines crisscrossing each other. "How many colors does it take to pain every region without any two adjacent ones being the same color?"
"That would be four.", I answered with a blank look.
Honestly, I saw this picture online. Be a little more creative with your teaching, people...
"Correct. I suppose the four-color theorem is common sense. As you can see, any flat image- a map of the world, or anything- can be painted using only four colors. Many people have realized this principle based on experience since ancient times. However, it's difficult to prove, and was an unsolved problem for a long time.", Ms. Usami explained away. While everyone whispered, I let out a loud sigh to shut them up.
"I hope the psychotic breakdowns don't just end up as another unsolved mystery. My heart hurts just thinking about the economic losses this string of incidents has caused.", Ms. Usami sighed.
The world's full of dangers, it seems...
You and I know that more than anyone else here, Ezio.
Indeed.
After class, I went up to Ryuji to run around the school a few times. He agreed and we were off. We ran for who knows how long, and decided to part ways right after. When I got back home, I had a sudden urge to drink some coffee.
Sojiro's coffee is good, but I like the stuff I used to make back home. I'll make it and have Sojiro try it too.
Why?
Don't question me.
Looks like you are trying to impress someone~
I hate you.
"Hey Boss, do we have any cardamom and/or ginger here?", I asked as I went to grab a few ingredients from the back.
"Yeah, why? Trying to make something?", Sojiro asked.
"What do you mean "trying"? I know how to make food and drinks, so don't underestimate me.", I sassed.
"I'll know it when I see it.", Sojiro called as he sat down in one of the booths. I roasted and grounded 50g of some fresh coffee beans to make ground coffee. I got 2tsp of cardamom powder, 200ml of milk, 1 1/2tsp of sugar, and 4 tbsp of cream. I chopped 3 tbsp of ginger and grated 25g of choclate. I put the coffee, cardamom powder, and ginger together and brewed it in 1 liter of water. I then heated up the milk and sugar until scalding point. Once the coffee was done, I poured into the milk. I put whip cream and the rest of the cardamom on top. I sprinkled the chocolate on top and I was done. I did the same for Sojiro and Akira, who just came back to the café, and served it to them. I took a sip from my cup, and the taste gave me a little flutter in my stomach, in a good way.
"Hmm... this is pretty good, kid. The flavor profile is almost at full potential, you just need a bit more practice.", Sojiro nodded. Akira kept sipping at it like no tomorrow.
"Uh, Akira, is your tongue okay? You could burn it.", I sighed.
"It tastes good.", Akira shrugged and kept going. I rolled my eyes and cleaned up. After that, I went straight to bed.
APRIL 28TH (THURSDAY 4/28)(AFTER SCHOOL)
I found Ryuji outside my classroom, so I decided to hang out with him.
"Hey, Ryuji. I'm hungry. Know a place?", I asked.
"Say no more! I know a ramen place that serves heaven! Let's go!", Ryuji grabbed my arm and booked it for the place.
Why is he running...?
The boy is energetic, Young Assassin. Share his enthusiasm for a change.
Okay then...
I began to run at about the same speed as him, and with wobbly legs, we made it. We got in easily and ate our ramen. It honestly tasted really good, and I saw that Ryuji enjoyed every second of it.
"Ahhh! I love the feelin' of noodles slidin' down my throat! Sweat drippin' over my face! This shit's the best, man! Ramen is life! Light soup like this really gets your body goin' again after a good run, y'know. We used to come all the way out here after practice and... Uh, I guess that's all in the past... By the way, I've seen Nakaoka around a few times... But for some reason it don't look like he's gettin' along with the others.", Ryuji sighed.
"Are you worried about him?", I asked while I pulled at my gloves.
"Yeah... Kinda. I've been thinkin' about what he said... How the whole track team was puttin' up with Kamoshida's shit... And how I effed it all up for 'em... I think he was right. They don't even got a club room anymore, so they've been storin' all their stuff behind the gym. They can't use any school gear either, so they just run laps around the block for practice... There ain't really a place for outcasts like that. I should know that better than anyone... It's good they're keepin' their heads low now though. I don't want 'em endin' up like me.", Ryuji nodded with furrowed brows.
"But you're doing great, Ryuji.", I retorted.
"Really...? Thanks... It's nice to hear it from you, y'know. And I know it must be tough just walkin' around school for you and Akira with all them rumors n' shit... Heh, we really don't belong anywhere... but y'know, maybe that ain't so bad after all. I guess now that I'm thinkin' about it, tryin' to fit in is a real pain in the a*s. I mean, I'd never've met you guys if I wasn't an outcast, right? So, uh... it's all good. For real though, it's been a shitton of fun! Hangin' out with you guys is so freakin' cool!", Ryuji laughed. I felt a sudden tight feeling in my gut and my face go hot.
"O-Oh... thanks for that. Just don't get too excited.", I mumbled, trying to use my hands to cover the bottom half of my face to avoid Ryuji seeing my face.
"... I just hope there's something I can do to help those track guys. Though it'd mess 'em up if I tried to butt in... Oh yeah, we still gotta find a new spot for our trainin'. Hm... I'll think about it. No slackin' off 'til then, mkay?", Ryuji smiled. I nodded and gathered my stuff. We bid eachother farewell and left for the café. Once I got back, I went out to the bathhouse alone. After the relaxing bath, I went back to the café and collapsed into bed.
APRIL 29TH (FRIDAY 4/29)(AFTER SCHOOL)
I met up with Ryuji to eat ramen again. We ran there and got in the hella long line to get in. We got in and we were both served the best ramen in the house. We ate and drank all of it with huge sighs, and burst into laughter at each other.
"Ahhh... Super freakin' good, down to the last drop. This stuff's worth eatin', no matter the wait. Ain't you totally fallin' for this soy sauce flavor too!?", Ryuji asked.
"Not gonna lie, I'm in love.", I nodded with a smile.
"Right!? Tokyo guys and chicks are all over this stuff! You're one of us now. Anyways... thanks for askin' me here today. I'm all cheered up now 'cause of you! C'mon, let's get goin'. There're tons of people waitin' for our seats.", Ryuji stretched and got up. I grabbed my stuff and went out with him. Ryuji was given a bag with a small bow and ramen decal on it.
"Huh, looks like they're givin' out presents. Here, you can have mine. I'm not crazy enough about ramen to be showin' that off in my room.", Ryuji showed me the gift; it was a decorative ramen bowl.
"Well, thanks for this. I'll put it somewhere in my room. Anyways, see you later.", I waved and left for the cafe. When I got there, I made my coffee and went to my room soon after. I placed the ramen bowl on a small shelf in the corner of the room.
It seems you value gifts...
Well, I don't usually receive gifts before... I just got them on my birthday, and even those are more practical than memorabilia.
I yawned, changed my clothes, and dropped onto the bed to snooze the night away.
THE END
A/N:
So, heyo! I actually wanted to make this chapter longer, but I thought it was too long and I felt bad just leaving you guys hanging. I know not much happened, but I write with how the story goes with every day. BTW, if you are playing the game and want a full 100% game, go check out Bkstunt_31's FAQ/Walkthrough of the game! It helped me get 100% in the game and I use it for reference in my writing (for regular days where there are no note worthy events to write about.) If you do, go tell them that DistortedMirror sent you and send me a link to the message or a pic or something! Or you could just tell me that you said so, idk ashdgfbjashvbflkhdjfvbdkhfb!!! Anyways, bye guys and I hope you enjoyed the chapter and the book so far! (Give me feedback too, it is very much appreciated!)
