Here's something I was deciding recently with Chara and their hatred. I'm not making this completely canon, but it's something I wanted to do for sometime now.

The substance (HATRED) has infected Chara for the longest of times. It was all created by the pain and fear caused by a genocide timeline (which happened quite frequently).

In the last timeline in the AU, Chara was revived by hacking their existence. It was brief, but long enough for Frisk to lend Chara half of their soul, enabling them to both co-exist.

When they did, the hatred and the DETERMINATION conflicted with one another. Eventually, the majority of their hatred fled, leaving around some reminiscence of its existence inside Chara.

The majority, unable to find the correct vessel, traverse the underground. Monsters couldn't handle it's intensity, making the substance search for something non-monster.

A human.

More specifically, a human corpse.
