Overtaken

A girl felt her eyes droop as her brain sunk into a renewed fuzziness. The plain white walls blurred and mixed with the faces in front of her. She swayed slightly and relaxed in the grip that held her still.

They were late this time. She thought, and as she drifted into the welcoming black she felt lighter and for the first time in a long while, a smile graced the girls lips. Then her head fell limp in the men carrying her back to the White Prison.

But even in her sleep she never lost hope. Even as the drug worked its way through her system and she forgot who she was. Hope remained.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Aelin awoke from her sleep. She groggily lifted her head. Just a few more seconds and everything would click into place.

Aelin blinked and everything cleared. She remembered nothing other than her first name, Aelin, and her purpose. To serve, and to provide adequate results. Results that met standards. One wrong step and Aelin would find herself gone. No one knew where, but everyone feared it.

Thank heavens Aelin was among the most promising.

A knock on her door sounded around her bare white room. The White Prison everyone called it. White tiles, white walls, white ceiling. All the same shade of disturbing, blinding white. Without waiting for an answer the person opened the door.

At the foot of Aelin's bed a painfully pale woman stood in a lab coat. Not that Aelin was much better. She too had matching pale skin, faded pink lips and dull hair. The woman approached her. Aelin tried to grasp the memory of the woman's name but it slipped from her fingertips every time she got close.

The woman helped her up and grabbing her elbow, she lead Aelin out of her room. Aelin spied the woman's name tag. Marabe. As they passed huge double doors a tapping sound could be heard. Slowly it grew louder and faster. Aelin's heart hammered in her chest with it.

"Dr. Bradshaw has probably locked himself out again." Marabe sighed. "Please wait here a moment Miss." She said.

Aelin understood the order perfectly and froze. Even if she hadn't wanted to she did. And that was how she would stay until told otherwise. That was her job. To obey and play Guinea Pig. Play the small, mindless child in a playground full of bullies.

But that was soon to change.
