A Skeleton and Angel (Part 2/2)

Wind pressed against his clothes as Sans looked up, ignoring the soft trickle of a car fading in the distance. The sky was a beautiful array of pink and orange, settling down to a darker shade as night approached.

This was the store where Alphys had apparently saw the statue. An anime store, naturally, the lizard monster having found it with her weeaboo instincts on their first day in town. It was impressive, really. Weeaboo power was a thing.

The text had been random earlier that day, and was rather surprising. Alphys and Undyne had went to the store to pick up an order for the new season of Mew Mew Kissy Cutie when they had saw the exact same statue Papyrus had mentioned to them next to the store.

The store was barren, as was the street, the closed sign explaining why the anime store wasn't filled with any activity. Not that it stopped Sans from simply teleporting to the other side, now standing in the empty room. Silence hung in the air, rivaled only by his short, almost distant breaths.

Why would the angel be here? That didn't make any sense, really. At an anime store, of all places? Not the ideal place for a creepy statue that moved when he blinked to be, but hey, he wouldn't judge.

There wasn't really much for Sans to explore in the front of the store, that was for sure. He sure as hell made sure to turn away from the hentai collection in the corner, not letting his eyes even dare look at those covers as he continued along to the desk. No thanks.

Pressing on with determination to not look at that, Sans continued onto the back of the store, soon finding himself inside of the storage room where the extra anime discs were stored. Was there anything an angel statue would want back here? If it wanted any of those hentai discs, he would be very, very concerned to what this key opened. He swore if it opened the room to some perverted dungeon Sans would actually climb into a trash can and die.

There was a feeling from this room, he swore it. A distant humming, something distant, but there. Sans could feel the pressure of utter power lingering, pressing into each of his bones like lead. Time. The power of time.

Something in this room had the power of time and space. And it was strong.

This time, he pressed on with morbid curiosity, keeping his magic sparkling slightly, in case of an attack. It was almost as if the cause of the power responded, its own power humming with his. Two beings, able to sense each others powers, bouncing back and forth in the small room. Sans almost stumbled into a box, his environment practically forgotten in favor of finding a power similar to his own.

What Sans was expecting, really, he wasn't sure. Maybe another person, able to remember resets and travel across space, just like himself. Maybe a teleporter, a small device. Or maybe the angel, revealing itself to be a soul filled, nicer creature to offer him a hot dog and ketchup.

What he wasn't expecting was this.

A Police Box?

It was tall, the top barely missing hitting the ceiling. A dark blue paint was covering the wooden exterior, windows tinted so he couldn't see through them. It looked in great shape, but when was the last time one was used? And why was it inside?

Sans tested out the wooden door, finding it to be locked. The box wasn't too big, it could fit at best two people from the looks of it. Maybe three, if one of those people were Sans. He was pretty small in body size.

Wait, it was locked. And Sans had a key.

"What are you doing here?"

Sans turned abruptly, startled by the sudden appearance of another. Instead of an angel, thankfully, it was a human male, standing in the doorway with a surprised expression.

"I, uh... was looking at this?" Sans asked.

"How did you get in here? I locked the doors!" The man said.

"I... Have you seen any angels? Angel statues around?" Sans asked, then pointed to the blue box behind him. "And what is this? Where did you get it?"

The man stared at Sans for a few moments before he flicked on the light switch, sighing lightly.

"I think I need to show you something."

~~~~~~
Crinkling was heard from the front of the store as Sans shifted the paper, glancing up at the paused video on the small T.V in front of him. The paper seemed to detail out a type of one sided conversation from what he could tell. Sans let himself briefly glance over all of the words, barely processing any of them until he noticed a line.
'Skeleton puns? Really?'
Why was that there? A bit odd, considering Sans was the only one who really made skeleton puns.
With a pen now in hand from behind the register, Sans decided to write out a small pun onto the corner of the paper.
'Hey, I have a skele-ton of bad jokes you couldn't even handle! '
Perfect.
The man came back into the anime store, carrying two sodas for the pair. Sans quickly shut the folder, not wanting to reveal the pun just yet.
"I don't know how, or why this is all happening," The man said, sitting down in the chair next to him, "And I certainly don't understand how you got in here, but I've been trying to figure this out for years. About the angels, the blue box, the skeleton."
"The skeleton?" Sans asked, "What does this have to do with me? What do you mean?"
"This video has been found only on one anime disc, Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2, as an extra," The man explained, "Not very many people have seen it because the second one sucks, but it talks about the angels. The paper is a copy of the transcript, of what this man says on the disc."
Oh, so what he read was basically a script. Sans hadn't really paid it any mind, he had only really looked at the one line about the skeleton.
"And it talks about the angels?" Sans asked.
"Yeah, here." The man leaned forward, running a hand through his blond hair before he was clicking on the play button.
Sans pushed aside the script and pen as the video started, revealing nothing but a wall. A man with brown hair and a brown coat walked onto screen, sitting down in front of the camera.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor," The man said on screen.
"The Doctor?" Sans wondered aloud, "Really? Doctor what?"
"Just the Doctor," The man said.
Sans blinked from surprise, drawing back from the screen with confusion. Okay, that was weird. The store owner next to him looked at Sans, but didn't seem to notice much.
"Just the Doctor?" Sans asked, "Doctor of what? What do you do?"
"Well, I help people. Like you right now."
"Okay, that's weird," Sans said, pointing to the screen as he looked at the other man.
"He's always said that, don't worry, he can't hear you," The man ensured.
"Well, I can hear you."
"He always says that."
"Do I?"
"You do."
"Can you guys stop?" Sans interrupted.
"Sorry."
"Sorry."
Only then did they both take notice. The store owner stared at Sans with wide eyes before he was flipping open the folder, looking through the pages.
"What you're saying, he's responding! He's actually- Hold on, I'm filling this in!" The man said, grabbing the pen before he started to write down what Sans had said in the gaps between the lines.
"Wait, can you... Can you actually hear me?" Sans asked.
"I can hear you," The Doctor said, "Well, really, I know what you're going to say."
"What do you mean you know what I'm going to say? You're on a T.V, on a disc. When was this recorded?" Sans asked the Doctor, leaning forward in his chair.
"1981."
"How do you know what I'm going to say 40 years before I say it?" Sans asked in disbelief.
"Well, 39 years to be exact."
"Ohhhh man, okay," Sans said, confusion filling his voice. "I need some more backbone for this, okayyyy."
"Skeleton puns? Really?"
"Of course, always," Sans said.
"It looks like you really like saying puns. Like the one you wrote down."
"The one I-"
Sans glanced over at the store owner, who was frantically writing down every sentence Sans said with enthusiasm. A written transcript of everything Sans had said.
"You- do you have that paper?" Sans asked, looking back at the Doctor. "You have that paper, don't you?"
The Doctor moved around for a bit before he held up the same exact papers, nodding. "Yes indeedo."
"How do you have the papers 39 years in the past?" Sans asked.
"I'm a time traveler, well, I was. Now I'm trapped in 1981," The Doctor explained, "And time is, well, it's complicated. You wouldn't understand."
"Really?" Sans asked. He knew a bit about time. "Try me."
"It's complicated."
"Tell me."
"Very complicated."
"Look, I'm not very happy. My brother could have been hurt and I'm not willing to let him die." Sans narrowed his eye sockets at the face on screen. "I'm pretty clever and I'm a bit upset, I've seen time be screwed with before and I want answers. Tell me."
The Doctor sighed on screen. "Time isn't what people think it is. It's more like a ball of... wibbly, wobbily, time... stuff."
"Fantastic description."
"Oh, you think you know better?"
"I know that time can be messed with, that someone can have save points and go back to a certain point in time, redoing everything. I know time travel is possible, but I want to know how you got that transcript."
"I get it in your future," The Doctor said, "But listen, we don't have much time. The angels, you saw them, right?"
"Angels?" Sans asked, "I only saw one."
"There's four of them. They're called weeping angels, because they always look like they're weeping into their hands. But they aren't. They're living statues, creatures from another world. They're called the lonely assassins, because they have the best defense mechanism in the universe. They're quantum locked. Not by choice, it's a fact of their biology. Whenever any living thing looks at them, they freeze, becoming stone. And you can't kill stone."
"I saw that, yeah," Sans said.
"That was their defense activating. It's why they're considered the lonely assassins, because they can never be seen by another creature. Including their own. That's why they always cover their eyes. When they're seen, they become stone, unable to move, unable to die. Of course, stone can't kill you. But then you turn your head away, then you blink... and oh yes it can."
Sans looked around the eerie shop, catching sight of the dark street outside. This didn't feel very safe from the angels. The shop owner next to him paid no attention, continuing to write down their conversation.
"I'm sorry, I'm so very sorry," The Doctor said, "But this is up to you now."
"Me? What am I supposed to do? I can't kill them!" Sans objected.
"The blue box, it's my time machine," The Doctor explained, "There is a world of time energy in there they could feast on forever, but the damage they could do would switch off the sun. You have got to send it back to me."
That explained the power Sans felt, it was time energy. It was a time traveling device. He really wasn't as surprised as he should be.
"How?" Sans asked.
Instead of replying immediately, the Doctor leaned back, looking down at the papers with confusion.
"And that's it, I'm afraid," The Doctor said, "That's the last of it I have. You don't have any more replies. I don't know what stopped you talking but I can guess. They're coming. The angels are coming for you, but listen, your life can depend on this. Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast, faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck."
And just like that, the video ended.
Sans had barely managed to turn to see the store owner before he was suddenly disappearing, practically vanishing from air.
With an angel right behind where his was, a hand outstretched.
He had been taken by the angel.
Sans jumped back out of his seat, realizing in horror what he was looking at. Not one, not two, but three angels were now in the shop, practically blocking out the exit. Sans felt around in his hoodie pocket for the key, tightening his grip on it when he found it.
He had to get to the blue box. That's all he had to do.
Wait...
Wasn't there four of them?
Sans jumped back, barely avoiding the hand from behind as he finally caught sight of all four angels. He almost got touched, that wasn't good. Sans wasn't exactly sure what happened to the store owner, but he was gone now. Which wouldn't be good if Sans got caught.
Adrenaline pumped throughout his bones as Sans backed towards the door. His hands grasped out at the wall before he followed it, finding the door. Get to the box. He had to get to the box.
It was a slow and careful trek, Sans gently scooting his feet back. He could slow them down with the blue bone attacks, but it wouldn't kill them. The Doctor guy seemed to know what he was doing, so Sans had to get his time machine to him.
Sans followed the source of power, feeling it hum gently as he got closer. The skeleton slowly drew out the key, making sure to not trip. He was making progress.
And he bumped straight back into it.
Depending on touch alone was a bit difficult as he stared at the angels, trying to unlock it with his back turned. Feeling around, Sans managed to get the key in, jiggling it a bit before the doors clicked.
He unlocked it!
Get in get in-
Sans managed to push the doors open before he was stumbling into the blue box, wasting no time in slamming them shut once he was safely inside. Was there a lock, or a-
A...
Sans turned around, eye sockets widening at the sight of the interior. It wasn't...
It...
It was bigger on the inside.
Giant, even. The room looked as big as his entire house, doorways leading off the walls into different hallways, suggesting even more rooms that were just as big. The walls practically glowed with color and pure power, a large control panel sitting in the center of the room. Everything buzzed with life and time, and Sans would even dare say maybe the place was alive.
The skeleton stepped forward cautiously, looking around. Yeah, he wasn't dreaming. A box was bigger on the inside. A police box was a time machine. There were four angels outside who were trying to kill him.
The machine around him seemed to buzz angrily, colors glowing along the wall. He could feel the humming intensify. It didn't like Sans being there.
So it was alive, too? Statues were alive, and now boxes?
"Hey, hey, calm down!" Sans yelled out, sticking out his arms. "I'm here in peace! The Doctor sent me!"
That seemed to do the trick. The colors and humming settled down again.
"I uh, I don't know exactly how to work this, though," Sans told it, walking up to the control console in the center of the room. "The Doctor is stuck in 1981. How do I get there?"
The machine around him buzzed to life once more, the large tube in the center of the room starting to glow brighter. Something started to flash as the machine hummed louder, some sort of whirling occuring.
Before Sans could say anything, he was suddenly being thrown to the right, grabbing ahold of a nearby railing to steady himself. It was a good thing he did, as the room suddenly tilted left, suggesting that the box itself was being thrown back and forth. Sans could hear thuds from outside of the doors.
The angels were trying to break in!
The time machine continued to whirl, starting up. More intense power started to join in the air, as the railing Sans was holding onto started to become see through.
That was it. The box was going back in time! To the Doctor!
Sans almost cheered with joy before he realized that the box was going without him, as he wasn't being transported. Everything started to become see through, even the walls, revealing the angels standing around him, All four were on each side, their hands gripping the edges as they continued to try and rock the time machine back and forth.
"Wait, no, take me with you!" Sans yelled, looking around.
It didn't work. The box continued to vanish, Sans shrinking down to the ground. He couldn't look at all of the angels, he was surrounded! And the time machine was leaving without him!
Soon, it completely vanished, leaving Sans hunched alone on the ground, trying to look around frantically. But he couldn't keep his eye sockets on all of them! He was surrounded!
Yet, despite Sans not looking at them, the angels didn't move when he looked away. The skeleton noticed this, sucking in a shaking breath as he realized exactly what was going on.
Due to all of the statues having grabbed the box, they had to lower their hands from their eyes. At first, it would have been fine. All four of them were on different sides of the box, so they weren't being looked at. Which meant they were able to move before. But now, since it had vanished from between them, the angels were looking at each other.
So they couldn't move.
Ever again.
Once Sans realized this, he let himself flop back against the ground, letting out a terrified, yet happy chuckle. It was okay.
He did it.
~~~~~~

Sans figured he would see the Doctor again.

There was some questions he had remaining about the situation. Everything didn't just connect, Sans needed answers.

The whirling had been a surprise, appearing in the garden where the angel had first appeared. Sans had looked back to find the blue box materializing behind him, whirling with power until it stopped. After a few moments of silence, the door opened.

And out stepped the Doctor himself. In all of his glory.

"Hey there, Doc," Sans said, giving a slight wave. "Wanna come inside and have some tea?"

That's how the Doctor ended up inside of his house.

The guy looked about the same as he did on video. Same brown hair, same brown eyes and coat, it looked like he didn't age a day. And maybe he just did finish recording that video, even though Sans had seen it two nights ago.

"You tricked them into looking at each other? By... that's brilliant!" The man's british accent flew loud. "But thank you for getting the Tardis back to me."

"The Tardis? You call it that?" Sans asked, "It's a weird looking time machine."

"Eh, I love it," The Doctor hummed, "But seriously, thank you. I got trapped back then, and really, if it wasn't for you, I would have been stuck in the past."

"How exactly did you get stuck in the past?" Sans asked.

The Doctor looked out through the window, admiring their garden. "The weeping angels. When they touch you, they send you back in time, then feed off of the potential time you could have lived. They live you to death, really. They use time energy as a source of substance, which makes them dangerous. One touch, and you're gone. You die of old age before you were even born. Everything thinks you went missing if you're taken, since they can't find a body, since you've already lived and died years ago."

"So that's what happened to you, they caught you off guard," Sans concluded, "No wonder you warned me not to blink, you screwed yourself there buddy."

He chuckled. "Yes, well, I didn't have the advantage of not needing to blink like you did."

"What happened to the man? The one who had been writing the transcript?" Sans pressed his chin against his knuckles. "He was touched. Did he get sent back with you?"

"No, he was touched by a different angel," The Doctor said, gently taking a sip of tea. "The more powerful the angel, the further back in time you get sent. He had been sent back in time 15 years before I was with the papers, so he had waited 15 years to give it to me, to get the message to you."

"You mean... he...?"

"He died of old age before he was even born."

"Why didn't you go back and save him? Bring him back here?" Sans asked, gesturing to the garden. "You have a time machine, it's time to go and save him!"

The Doctor smiled at the pun, but shook his head. "I mean, I could, but how do you think the video got onto the disc? He was the one who added the extra onto the disc, since he invented the DvD player. He found a wife and settled down, he had a better life in the past than he did at his store. He had children, and died happy. He gave me the script so I was able to save you and your family. Not everyone is as lucky as he was, when he was sent back. Most die alone and confused, he just got lucky. Not to mention, how he had built a house, and let me leave the key to my Tardis in it so you could find it. He helped you save everyone."

The realization dawned on Sans. "The woman, who owned this house before she died, was she...?"

"His wife?" The Doctor finished, "Yes, he died of old age before her. She kept the key safe, so you could find it. Like I said, time is really weird, and complicated."

"No, no, I actually get it," Sans said, "I just... it's all over now, I guess. The angels can't move ever again, they're looking at each other. We're fine and safe now. All of my questions are answered."

"Oh, well, that's good," The Doctor said, beaming at him. "Guess I better be off, then."

The Doctor stood up and made his way to the door, pushing the backdoor open before he looked back at Sans.

"I mean," The Doctor said lightly, "You could come with me, I guess."

"What?" Sans asked.

"I'm a time traveler, I explore the universe," The Doctor said, "But it does get lonely. I do have to warn you, it's dangerous. I deal with things like Weeping Angels all the time, and I'm constantly fighting for my life. It's extremely risky to join me."

"So you... you go on adventures like this all the time?" Sans asked, "You deal with things just as bad as the angels?"

"Even worse. More deadly."

"And you can travel in time and space, so you can go wherever? Like see the stars?"

"I could take you to be on a star."

There was no moment of hesitation before Sans nodded. "Yeah, I want to come with you."

The Doctor gave him a large, goofy smile. "Then let's go."

The two practically giggled as Sans rushed out of his seat, quickly moving towards the Doctor to join him. And just like that, they were off, the Tardis humming to life again to take them on their next wild adventure.
