FOR CENTURIES, VAMPIRES HAVE BEEN PREY TO MONSTER HUNTERS LIKE Nathaniel van Helsing and Ulysses Bloodstone. While they were, indeed, creatures of the night and feasted on the blood of humans to survive, not all of them were the monsters that the hunting community had made them out to be. Valerie Abrahams was certainly no monster. If she could have it her way, she never would have even become a vampire. But she had been cursed to such a life, simply because of the resemblance she shared with Vlad Dracula's late daughter, his first born child, Lilith Dracula.

Despite having two sons of his flesh and blood, Dracula saw Valerie as the daughter he had lost, and thus she had become his favourite child, even if they didn't share any blood relations. Even her daughter, her sweet and innocent Astrid Abrahams — who she had birthed while still human and had no choice but to turn into a vampire — had become a precious gift to the King of the Damned. Valerie and her daughter meant everything to Dracula, but Valerie didn't feel the same way. She only saw Dracula as the creature that cursed her. The monster that took her away from her home, her husband, and forced her to turn her sweet and innocent daughter into a vampire.

For years, Valerie would do everything she could to sever the ties she had with Dracula. She wanted a life without him, a life alone with her daughter and away from the pressures of being Dracula's favourite child. But even after decades, they couldn't get away. No matter how far they ran, he somehow always knew exactly where they were. As time went on, Valerie decided to stop running, and she settled down in a peaceful manor with her daughter. They tried to have somewhat of a normal life together, but it wouldn't be long before Valerie's life would change forever.

She had been walking home one night after picking up their new supply of blood from the local distributor when she caught the scent of blood. Upon instinct, Valerie had followed it, and found a man in an alley, desperately trying to fend off a hungry vampire. She saved the human that night. But he wasn't just any human. He was Clint Barton, an agent from a secret organization called S.H.I.E.L.D., and despite being terrified, he wasn't even scared of her. He didn't see her as a monster. In fact, S.H.I.E.L.D. approached her many times after that, asking for her help. But she always turned them away, claiming she was no hero, but a villain. A monster.

A few years would go by before Director Nick Fury would show up on her doorstep for what he claimed would be the last time. He told her that Clint Barton had been brainwashed and that the God of Mischief, Loki, had taken a powerful artifact known as the Tesseract. He said that he needed her help to save the world, and that it was time the world saw her as more than just a monster. But Valerie wasn't sure the world was ready to know about the existence of vampires. She knew it would only cause panic and fear. Still, she couldn't leave Clint Barton to die when she knew he had a family waiting for him to come back home. If the roles were reversed, she knew Hawkeye would do anything he could to return her to Astrid.

And so, despite the conflict in her heart, Valerie Abrahams left home to save the world. She became an Avenger, and she didn't regret a single moment of it. After all, it did bring her into the arms of a certain former Russian spy.
