1 || SEPARATED BY DIMENSIONS ||

Echo Creek, 11:45 pm

Marco doesn't know what to do.

The party had ended shortly after his best friend disappeared into a portal to who knows where. All his friends didn't know what to say, even Jackie Lynn Thomas, his girlfriend, so they just left without saying a word, probably too overwhelmed to even comfort him. The rest of the people just escorted themselves out after the huge scene. His parents were worse. His dad burst into tears for the Mewman Princess and ran up to their room, his wife quickly followed him to comfort him with shining tears in her eyes.

It's been 2 hours since Star Butterfly, his best friend in the whole wide universe left for Mewni. It's been 2 hours since Marco Diaz had sunk into a chair at his kitchen, staring at the now cold oatmeal that had been staring back at him.

2 hours since Star said goodbye. 2 hours since I lost my "Mess Up Twin", probably forever.

Marco's train of thought stopped.

"Mess Up Twin.... " Marco said softly, "I never thought I'd actually use that word, considering how much I hated the term ever since Star blurbed it out." A weak giggle escaped his mouth before it turned into a pack of heartbreaking sobs.

This is all my fault....

If only I had been faster, then maybe Star would still be here.

Maybe I wouldn't be sitting here. Maybe I would have been there with her, by her side. Maybe... Maybe...

A soft nudge at his arm brought the Latino-American Teenager back to reality. The soft tune of a song on the radio only made his heart break even more. Barko Diaz sat at the island, his big black adorable eyes, his pink tongue sticking out of its mouth, drool slipping out, and his cute fluffy beige tail wagged happily as he stared at his master.

At the sight of the laser puppy, a picture of the bright, smiling Mewni Princess appeared at his mind. Of how happy and energetic she was when she made the cute puppies. Marco remembered that day, the first day of when Star came to Earth. He remembered how annoyed and frustrated he was when he learned that Star was staying at his home.

But that all changed when Ludo and his henchmen came to Earth and fought with them. He remembered how cool and awesome they both were, fighting side by side.

A soft smile played on his lips at the memory. Oh, how he missed those days. Tears burned his eyes as sadness and pain struck his heart. Another sob slipped out as more and more tears fell.

Marco laid his head on his oatmeal, not caring if he gets any on his face. Seeing how dejected his master was, Barko Diaz did a few tricks for him, rolling over, standing in his little beige paws, but it seemed nothing could cheer up the young teen.

"Barko Diaz, we should be sad." Marco commanded the animal, his voice full of sadness and despair. "Act sad, Barko Diaz!"

But the little dog didn't listen, instead it climbed on top of the radio and stared at Marco with his bright shining eyes. Marco would have hugged and cooed over the puppy if he wasn't feeling so miserable. The little puppy barked at his owner.

"No! We can't!", Marco suddenly said, as if he really understood what the laser puppy said, "Star is coming back. We can't put down the decorations, okay? It's a no, Barko Diaz. She'll come back... She has to...." The last statement felt like it was a plea rather than an answer.

The youngest member of the Diaz family signed sadly. The young boy just increased the volume of the sad tune playing out on the radio and buried his head in his arms. More and more tears fell down his face, his heart breaking more from the sorrowful tune. He felt the wet and sticky feeling of oatmeal on his face, yet he paid no heed to it.

The wall clock dinged when the hands struck 12 midnight.

It was finally summer. Yet there were no happy squeals that echoed through the Diaz household, nor there were excited babbling of two best friends. There was just a sound of a sobbing and tearful boy who desperately wished that his best friend in the whole universe would return home to Earth.

Mewni, 11:45 pm

15 minutes. 15 minutes to go before the start of the so-called "Summer" that Star Butterfly is completely unaware of. The "Summer" that she would have to miss all because Toffee has returned.

As soon as Star stepped out of the portal that led to Mewni, her mother, Moon Butterfly had hastily pushed her daughter to a carriage.

Star obeyed her mother without speaking, thinking about Marco. She didn't even question her mother about the floating lifeless bodies of the Magical Commission that had a string tied to their ankles.

The carriage ride was fast, silent and tense. Her mother was driving the carriage at the quickest rate she could, all the while telling her daughter to be quiet, not that the young princess had any strength to even argue.

The young princess' wand produced a 3 dimensional clock, staring at it as the minutes ticked away closer and closer to midnight.

She hugged her knees close to her chest, trying to comfort herself that her best friend, and well, crush, is going to be fine without her. Star took out the picture from the future and stared at the pair's happy smiles.

I guess we aren't really gonna get to 'Beach Day', afterall. I'm so sorry, Marco....

Tears slid down her cheeks, her heart marks turned into white skulls, showing her depressed state. The dirty red jacket that she stole before jumping into the glowing portal, was knotted securely around her neck.

"Oh Star, cheer up! I'm sure Marco is doing okay." The voice of her mother outside tried to comfort her.

Yeah right, is what she wanted to retort to her mother, instead she just hummed in reply.

An idea suddenly came to her mind.

"I know! I can use Eclipa's Spying Spell to see how Marco is doing!" Star chirped happily.

The magical princess chanted the words to the dark spell, her wand produced a young boy, who was at the kitchen island, saying a few words to himself.

"-put down the decorations, okay? It's a no, Barko Diaz. She'll come back... She has to...." Marco said to himself.

Star could hear the desperation and sadness dripping from his best friend's words.

"Oh Marco... I don't know if I will." Star said, as if Marco could actually hear what she's saying.

Star sniffed at the jacket around her shoulders and shrieked at the strong, disgusting smell that hit her nose.

"Ew, Marco! That is disgusting! When was the last time you washed this thing!" Star had a face, pinching her nose.

"Star!" Her mother called in a hushed voice.

Star sniffled and wiped her nose before answering.

"Yeah mom?"

"We need to be quiet, sweetheart. Who knows who's listening." Moon reminded her daughter.

"Sorry mom."

"It's okay. Sweetie, could you check on the Commission?"

"Yeah, sure." Star poked her head out the window and looked at the floating bodies.

"Um, yeah mom. They're okay." Star replied with a shiver going through her spine. It sort of creeped her out now that she noticed.

A sound came from her wand. The wall clock struck midnight, it was finally summer. She saw how lonely and sad Marco was, listening to horrible sad music, oatmeal dripping from his face.

Star felt a lump forming at her throat again, but she swallowed it down. It wasn't the time to be moping around or be crying. There are more pressing matters right now. Mewni is in trouble. Toffee is back.

That night, Star Butterfly finally understood how to be ruler. A ruler needs to set aside personal needs. The Kingdom always comes first to a ruler. And right now, her kingdom needs her.
