Plot
Plot (noun)
The main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.
I would like to define plot as what your character faces throughout the course of the story.
To further simplify, there's only three parts of a plot:
•The characters
•Their wants/needs/goals
•The obstacles and problems keeping them from getting those things.
A plot can be just as long as you need it to be.
I shall deconstruct the plot of the ever popular fairytale, Cinderella, to demonstrate the parts of plot.
The characters: Cinderella, her stepmother, her stepsisters, her fairy godmother, and the prince.
Their wants:
Cinderella wants to have just one night of fun at the ball (Which is just setting her standards a bit low if you ask me. She could do with the FBI or CIA or whatever to arrest her stepmother and stepsisters because of her forced servitude. Oh well).
Her stepmother and stepsisters don't want Cinderella to go to the ball. Why? Well, if she saw people who actually got paid to work or people who didn't have to work at all, she might start demanding the same. Lord forbid someone want at least minimum wage.
The fairy godmother wants Cinderella to go to the ball and get out of the bad situation she's in. And maybe she also wants Cinderella to hook up with the prince.
The Prince wants to find a wife. When he meets Cinderella, he decides that he has to marry her.
Their obstacles:
Cinderella has a buttload of chores and dirty work to do for her "family". Then those jerks rip up her mother's old dress.
The stepmother and stepsisters don't really have any obstacles— they are the villains, after all.
The fairy godmother, of course, has her deadline. Twelve o' clock, sharp.
The prince has facial recognition issues and he (like any other smart prince would) forgot to ask Cinderella for her name.
I hope this helped!
