Chapter 27 - Final
"Jannnneeee!"
Sans ducked the side of his skull against her shoulder, nuzzling up against her. He missed her so darn much.
They stood in the hallway, Jane pecking kissing along his skull as she held him. He hung like a koala from her torso, happily embracing her. When he was a zombie, alone in the world, she gave him a chance no other survivor would. That wasn't the only reason he loved her, but it was a good reason as to why he was so attached to her.
Papyrus was glancing down a corridor, acting as a guard while the two lovers enjoyed their reunion. Sally simply stood by with Charlie, waiting to leave, as she just wanted to have a tea party.
Jane turned towards Papyrus, not releasing his brother from her hug. "Did you use the vial I gave you?"
"Oh, no, I still have it!" Papyrus pulled out the vial from his pocket, holding out the darkened liquid for her. "Do you want it?"
"No, keep it for an emergency," Jane said, pushing his fingers to enclose the object. "I have enough of that inside of my veins, it'd be worthless to use it on me. I think we should sneak out."
"You killed a lot of people, we found a lot of bodies on the way here," Papyrus said, "It wouldn't be much of a 'sneak out'."
"I only killed around seven guards," Jane said, narrowing her eyes in confusion. "How many bodies did you find?"
"Over thiiirrrtttyyy," Sans grumbled.
"Stabbed?"
"Yeahhhhggg."
"Looks like the kid's been busy."
Jane was rather surprised it took this long for the kid to snap, if she was being honest. Their little charade had gone on for quite awhile, since before the monsters even escaped underground, so it was odd why they kept it up. Perhaps they had known the zombie outbreak was occurring, and helped free monsters to further their own plans. They were desperate for power, that was rather clear, but those desperate for it tend to be the ones who fall the hardest when it was unobtainable.
She then glanced down at her zombie boyfriend, who was still hugging her chest. Fighting a power hungry child with this baggage wouldn't exactly be a the best idea. She could hand him off to Papyrus, but she didn't want to leave him alone. Especially after what just happened.
The smell was sudden.
Both she and Jeff jerked their faces up when they caught a whiff, having long since experienced this before. A stench unlike no other, growing in size. Burning flesh, blazing walls.
Fire. There was a fire.
"We have to get out of here, now," Jane said, turning to the others. "Hopefully Chara will burn in it, but we can't risk our own lives."
It would really be ideal if Chara did, in fact, burn in the fire, but Jane doubted she would have that kind of luck. If anything, Chara might have started the fire, so they may very well be aware of it and had already fled. Jane couldn't exactly be too sure, but she'd rather run than find out.
And so, that's how they found themselves outside, twisting to watch as the building was consumed by flames. How did a fire manage to catch that quickly? Who even started it?
And where were the scientists?
They weren't outside, and they certainly hadn't escaped, since all of the vehicles were still besides the building. Unless they suddenly ran out of the front door, they were likely victims of the fire or Chara. Jane couldn't say which outcome sounded worse, but she hoped they suffered.
Seeing someone's form in the flames made Jane squint towards the entrance, looking through the open doors to try and find out who it was.
Of course it was Chara.
There they stood, hair fringed from the heat, burning yellow eyes tinted with red. Blood hung from their clothes, dripping down with their stained knife. Whoever's body they were taking over was changing, as their cheeks were now tinted pink, and their hair grew darker with a more colored, firm brown. Flames crept up behind them, consuming the building and everything in their path with a burning hatred.
"Ch-"
There was no chance for Papyrus to speak before Chara was suddenly lunging, but Jane was just as fast, countering their insane attack with her own. Both were strengthened abnormally fast, but through their own means. Chara had L.O.V.E pumping through their veins, and Jane had her own void found powers. They pushed back against their knives, bouncing back a few feet. Jane's heels dug into the dirt, acting as an anchor.
Their fight was fast, desperate, neither wanting to back down, and neither willing to. Mercy was something both didn't consider, especially with how the other was their obstacle. Jane, clearly, had an advantage, but Chara wasn't far behind in power. Knives clashed constantly, firm kicks and punches given when necessary.
"Papyrus!"
Papyrus turned to Jeff, startled by the zombie who managed to ay his name without a fluke. He pointed to the vial, then gestured to himself. A few grumbles escaped from his mouth, desperate and unfocused.
There was no hesitation. Papyrus gave him the vial.
What he expected, he wasn't sure. Maybe Jeff would inject it into himself, or maybe he would give it to Jane. What he hadn't anticipated in the slightest, though, was for Jeff to make a full turn and throw it into the fire.
"Jeff?" Papyrus asked, caught off guard. He went to move forward, but was stopped by Sans' hand.
Then he saw what Sans meant.
The effect was slow. Black, glowing flames started to crawl up amongst the others, spreading across the usually bright orange glow. Once it started, it didn't stop. The void and darkness grew across the building, unable to stop in their utter destruction.
Jane and Chara noticed as well, both turning to stare in surprise. Jane, with experience and age on her side, was the one to ultimately react first. She turned towards Chara, and with one firm push, shoved them into the flames.
"Janneeeeegh!"
Chara, who had been falling backwards, managed to snatch out an arm an grab onto her arm, pulling her right into the darkness.
~~~~~~
This was new.
Jane stood in an inkly black void, looking around with a shallow breath. Nothing. She couldn't see anything. Frankly, she didn't expect the fire to act as a direct opening to the void, but the whole situation was rather confusing nevertheless.
She pushed her legs forward into a walk. Chara could be anywhere, but she doubted either of them had their powers right now. Her legs felt like weights, and she could barely use her knife compared to before. Her skin looked more natural, too. It was as if the experiments were twisted around, like they never happened.
A soul fluttered in the distance, bright red. A human soul, but it wasn't Jane's. It didn't seem to be Chara's either, so who's was it?
"It's mine."
Jane turned to find Frisk standing behind her. Chara had their back turned to her, knees pressed against their chest and their head down. They've given up, they didn't get their power. There was no point fighting now.
"This is where Chara came from, and they can't leave without a soul," Frisk said, "They no longer have my soul, either. I sold it to them for a new universe, to save everyone, but it's since over. I got my soul back once they entered the void."
"Oh," Jane said. So this was the real Frisk? "Are you going to come back?"
Frisk shook their head softly. "No." They turned to look at Chara. "I was the one who started a genocide, and I didn't stop Chara when I should have. We'll stay here together."
So Frisk had chosen to stay there. They moved back a few steps, glancing over at their soul. They didn't have much in the real world, they probably just reached out to Jeff as a last ditch attempt to save the world.
"I'm going to give my soul to someone who's been here much longer than I have," Frisk said, "You both will leave together. The vial didn't have much void within it, so you both will be leaving pretty soon. Tell... tell them I'm sorry."
"I will."
That's how Jane found herself amongst the flames, suddenly holding someone against her shoulder as she watched the darkness leak away. Flames died much quicker than a fungus. They burned and spread faster, but were just as quick to be diminished. Jane took a small glance over at the person she was helping, catching sight of a nametag on his labcoat.
W.D Gaster
"Ugh..." He groaned, lightly pressing a hand against the side of his skull.
"C'mon, random guy," Jane said, better leaning him up to give him support. "Let's go."
~~~~~~
It was over.
Days passed, and they had learned the final fact of the fight. It was over. All of the scientists who didn't die by Chara, Jane, or infection, were consumed by the flames. Zombies from neighboring towns moved over to join their own town, making Jane the Mayor as they built their community. Monsters were shortly added as well, mingling the two into a well constructed system.
Gaster was... a surprise, to say the least. Papyrus hadn't anticipated seeing his Father, and Sans barely remembered him, so the two were working to get close to him. Were skeletons just naturally smart and easily friend-able? Sans was her boyfriend, obviously, but Papyrus was a pleasure to be near, and Gaster was no different from his younger son. He was smart, but didn't conform to society, just like Jane. It took no time for the two to become close, as he didn't waste her time, and nor did she waste his.
And so, one night, Jane looked up through the broken ceiling, watching the stars. Sans cuddled against her side, zombie skull ducked below a blanket as he breathed softly. A video game buzzed, Ben no doubt staying up again.
It was over.
They could live peacefully now.
《》《》《》
Yes, YES! IT IS COMPLETE!
Not my best work, and if I do make a list of things I want to rewrite, this would probably be second behind Woman's Vision. I'm not too proud of this, I think my writing suffered a lot from some personal issues that's been happening, so rip, but either way I got consistent uploads out and it's now completed!
Thank you guys so much for reading, that honestly means a lot! Make sure to go check out my other stories if you haven't, I have an army of fanfics, it's actually a problem!
But I will admit I'm not happy with the writing quality of this, and that's why I'm going to change it in the next book. Not only do I have the entire plot written and planned out, I'm already onto chapter 20, so the first 20 uploads are practically guaranteed. It's been in my drafts since like, 2018 (I actually mean it, this next book is by far the one that's been waiting the most, and my patience is finally paying off because I have a chance to upload it) and I should give a hint, seriously, it's going to be awesome. *cough cough* neko sans and a crossover *cough cough*. That should be coming up shortly, so keep your eyes peeled!
Either way, you guys are awesome, and have a great day!
