71 | MUTANT AND PROUD
"DO YOU THINK this is a good idea?" Logan asked Professor X as he looked down at Nayara working in hand to hand combat with Gambit. The brunette was able to wrestle him out on the last match.
Professor X looked up to him with a small smile. "She might as well practice." Professor X told him. "And she didn't survive just out of luck. She knows her way." He added.
Then he pressed a bottom and a laser beam shoot out. Gambit swore loudly, pushing Nayara to the other side of the hall as the laser hit where they had been. Logan scoffed, looking down at the training facility.
"That wasn't a warning." Nayara commented to Gambit. Nayara then avoided the second laser, and just as one was about to hit her, she raised her wrist up and opened the red, white, and blue shield that Steve had given her long ago. It was her survival mode kicking in.
A look of shock passed through the Professor X for a second. "Can you jump?" Nayara said to Gambit who threw a card against one of the beams. She nodded to her shield. "Come on, I saw it in a movie once." Nayara said, and while he ran she used her force to push him. Of course she wasn't Captain America, but Gambit could jump. Then it destroyed one of the laser.
Then as one was about to aim at them, she threw the shield as best as she could. It missed for a second, but Gambit was two steps ahead of her, trowing one of his cards so it crashed against it. "I need to work on my aim." Nayara said to him with a small smile. She signaled it to go back to her wrist.
Logan turned off the training program, closing the session. Nayara turned off her shield and high five Gambit. "Not bad." He noted. Nayara couldn't stop smiling.
"Thank you." Nayara said, bowing as an artist and Gambit returned it.
. . .
The brunette looked at the news that were playing in the living room. Cyclops was watching them in silence. Photographs of the Sentinel Services, expanding the production of the Sentinel Machines appeared.
She didn't say anything, but she too could see the pressure that Cyclops held on his shoulders. "You are hitting the production plant, right?" She quietly asked. The hero looked over his shoulder at Nayara. On that moment she resembled the same scared students that fled the school.
Cyclops sent her a reassuring smile. "We are keeping watch on it." He said to her. The same answer he gave the students. She didn't need that kind of pressure on her shoulders, not at that age. No one did.
"I knew what might happen before it did. I was just hoping we win this time." Nayara commented to him. "I am just wondering why Magneto hasn't done anything. For someone who called himself the defender of mutants, his quietness is uneasy." She added, seeing the ad that was showing on television. One about how to recognize mutants.
Then she laughed. "Or maybe Mystique is running the country, and is just letting this roll because it makes him more powerful." Nayara added. Cyclops turned quickly back to her, as if her idea wasn't as far fetched.
The brunette recognized the look he had. "You don't think...I mean. It will make sense." Nayara said as she thought about it. She share the same knowing look with Scott Summers. "Magneto will more momentum on his actions. It will point towards him being right all alone. It wouldn't damage his reputation, he will be playing both sides." Nayara said honestly.
Scott Summer looked at her with amazement but in silence. "Get Professor X to check on that." Scott said to her.
"Okay, but if I am correct...how are we supposed to expose it?" Nayara asked him curiously, her eyes going back to the news. One commenting about Steve Rogers. Her heart sank looking at the image of her closest friend, her guardian in a world that was unknown to her.
Scott saw her changed and turned to the news. Logan turned it off, seeing what was airing. "Seriously, Slim?" Logan whispered to him. Scott was thinking over Nayara's idea.
Nayara snapped back to reality, looking at Scott Summers. "I...I will get Professor X." She noted before walking away from the room in a hurry.
"Suit up. We are checking something." Scott said to him. "Not a world to others. Get Kitty on it too. We will need a way inside." He mentioned to him.
"What for?" Logan asked her.
"Nayara gave me an idea." Scott mentioned to him.
. . .
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Nayara heard someone call from inside the room. Nayara opened the doors to the Celebro room. "Hank said that you were here." Nayara pointed to him. "Scott asked for you to check where Mystique was." Nayara said to him, looking at inside Celebro. She had been only once before inside the iconic room.
Professor X sent her a brief smile, letting her know she could step further into the room. "You wouldn't be disturbing. I promise." He reassured her.
Nayara smiled, slowly walking closer to the main board. Her eyes looked at it an amazement. "It's amazing." Nayara said to him.
"Better than you thought of?" He asked her, looking up.
Nayara let out a small laugh, nodding at him. "Better than seeing it on a movie screen or pages of a comic book." She noted as she looked up to the roof of it.
"It has saved lives, but has damaged it too." Professor pointed to her.
"Can I ask you a question, Professor?" She asked him.
"How do...how do keep your head after all that has happened? How do you trust that it will all work out in the end?" Nayara asked him.
Professor X looked at her with curiosity. It was a hard question nonetheless. "I don't believe anyone has asked me that before." Professor said to her. He thought of an answer to give, but he struggled.
However, it may seem that he was saved by the bell. Bobby walked inside the room, and looked at Nayara. "You got a visitor." Bobby said to her.
"I am not expecting anyone." Nayara answered.
Professor X looked into and nodded. "It's something you may need to take care of." Professor X.
"What is it?" Nayara asked both of them.
Bobby gave her a sad look. "It's a lawyer. They are looking for you." Bobby said to her. "It's about Steve." He added.
. . .
Nayara looked curiously at the lawyer. "Hi, I am Nayara." Nayara said looking at the lawyer.
"Nayara Lilly, I am guessing." The lawyer said to her. The brunette nodded back.
"I'm Carmen Brighton, and I am representing the late Steve Rogers." She said to her. Nayara frowned even more. "I am so sorry for you loss." She added.
"How may I help you?" Nayara asked, shaking her hand.
"It's about his will." Brighton informed her. "You are listed as the sole owner of all his assets. You have been a hard person to find, Miss Lilly." She added.
Nayara froze for a second. "Look, I can't..." She began but the lawyer was persistent.
"There is a lot we have to discuss. Please have a seat..." Brighton began but Nayara shook her head.
"I am not....Steve's things belonged to him. I-I I don't understand." Nayara said to her.
The lawyer nodded towards the seat. "I will be more than happy to discuss it with you. I am afraid this can't wait any longer." Brighton added. "If you refuse the inheritance, the state will inherit it. Including its shield, which he is passing down to you."
"I-I..." Nayara failed to comprehend the information. The shield!
"Please, have a seat." Brighton said to her. With a defeated look, Nayara sat down across the lawyer.
. . .
Nayara knocked on the door of the lawyer's office in Hell's Kitchen. If she needed one, she knew she needed one she could trust. "Come in." A voice said from the other side of the door. Nayara opened the door, and smiled at the blonde man that was near a coffee table.
She placed her hands on Steve's old beat up jacket. "Welcome to Nelson and Murdock." He said to her.
Nayara shook his hand politely. "I am looking for Matt Murdock?" She asked him. There was brief silence and then someone leaving their chair. The said lawyer had heard clearly, which confused him.
Foggy Nelson pointed at Matt's office, interested too. "He is just around the corner." He told her. Matt Murdock walked out of the door and Nayara smiled brightly at her reflection on his signature red glasses. Her heart fluttered in excitement, finally able to meet one of her heroes.
The layer with the red glasses sent her a small smile. "I am Matt Murdock." He said to her, but she already knew it.
"Nice to meet you Ma...Mr. Murdock." Nayara caught herself. It could have seen a honest mistake, which she was thankful for. "I..I never needed a lawyer but I do now." Nayara commented to them. She didn't knew what the process was, but she felt safe knowing that Matt Murdock was around.
Matt listened, catching the young age of the brunette. "On what charges?" Foggy asked her curiously. For a person her age, he doubted she had gotten in as much trouble. If only he knew.
Nayara looked down at the copy of Steve's will. "Nothing criminal...because that's illegal. Which...is the reason you will need a lawyer in the first place." Nayara nervously said. Matt was patient with her though. "It's about an inheritance. I got a copy of the will..but not in Braille." Nayara commented Matt. "Do you do that sort of stuff too? The non-criminal part?" She asked a bit quieter this time.
He could spot the shaking of her hands from the sound. "Yeah." Matt said to her. Foggy turned quietly to look at his partner. Matt pointed at his office and Nayara followed him. "I didn't catch your name." Matt pointed out.
"Nayara Lilly." Nayara commented, taking a seat across from him.
Matt froze for a second in thought. He could have sworn he heard it before, but briefly. "I am sorry for your lost. Family?" He asked her. Nayara hummed a yes.
"Yeah." She said to him. "Umm...I will like to keep it quiet. I heard good things about you, but I don't know...umm.." She didn't know how to put into words.
Matt sent her a smile. "He can keep it quiet. Client confidently." He reassured her. Nayara nodded back. He could see her heartbeat be more at ease more. "Did the person had any other relatives apart form you?" He asked her.
Nayara shook her head. "No. Just me." Nayara said to him. "I got a called recently. Apparently if they don't hear from me. They will give it to the state." Nayara commented.
"Who is the person you are inheriting from?" He asked her.
Nayara got quiet for a second. "Steve Grant Rogers." Nayara said with sadness in her voice. "To the world he was Captain America. To me he was my friend." She noted. The brunette saw Matt freeze out of shock.
He remembered Steve had mentioned something about family. When they were fighting side by side. Matt had been asked if he had one, he said he got a second chance after all. "Captain America?" He asked her again, playing closer attention to her.
"Yeah." Nayara said to him. Then she cracked a small smile. "I know." Seeing the silence that followed. "So...how will this work?" She asked, leaning on the table.
Matt sent her a reassuring smile. "It is not as scary as it sounds." Matt joked to her. Nayara laughed, being much more at ease. "So why don't we start from the beginning? I will be happy to help you." He added.
"Thank you, Mr. Murdock." Nayara said to him.
"You are very welcome, Ms. Lilly." Matt said to her.
. . .
"Look who is paying for this? Someone with the name Frost." Foggy told Matt. He stopped when he read the name on the will. Then he swore loudly, and Matt motioned him to quiet down about it. "You are serious? Captain America? A case?" He asked in a terrible attempted whisper.
"Yes, my case." Matt correct him. However, he didn't smile. "Foggy, come on.." He told him, trying to keep on track.
"Do you think he had a daughter all along? I mean? He lists her as his only family member, and the ONLY person to gain all his assets. Everything, house, money, rights to museum exhibitions, even his shield and suit." He said to Matt, who had gotten quieter.
"Wait...wait!" Foggy said, searching something on his phone. "See! Here! Emma Frost! She was in Forbes most successful women in business along with Pepper Potts. Do you she think this is their kid?" He asked in wonder.
Matt sighed, resting a hand on his head. Thinking back at the time where he was working Steve Rogers....
"Do you have a family? You wouldn't..." Punisher asked, wondering why he was letting others tears others apart. Not taking his route.
Steve Rogers sent him a glare. "I do. I got a kid." He answered him before walking away. The room going silence at the revelation. Everyone felt the pressures of hiding, or putting their families at risk. Some even thought that the Captain didn't had anything to loose, but he did.....
Steve sighed then turning to Matt Murdock. "You had a family." Matt said to him. Steve smiled, nodding at him.
"Yeah." He said, thinking back at Nayara. Then he chuckled a bit. "I think you would have gotten along." Steve commented.
"Do tell." Matt teased him.
Steve looked down at the floor. "Your sense of humor." Steve told him.
Matt leant on one of the walls, opposite to Steve. He had heard the Captain discuss something privately to Professor X. About how he can ensure Nayara was okay in the case he left. Professor X mentioned getting a lawyer for the will. Tensions were high, but still, he couldn't have possible thinking about the worst case scenario.
"What your kid's name?" Matt asked Steve.
"Nayara Lilly." Steve said with a proud smile.......
Matt Murdock sighed, turning to his friend. "This can't leave these walls. Not a word. Okay." Matt told him. His best friend nodded at him.
"I do got to ask her? If she got so many connections. Why not go to someone else?" He said to him before taking a look at something else.
Matt remained quiet, thinking about that same question.
. . .
Nayara walked to her motorcycle that she had parked near the West Side Piers. The brunette needed time to think about what her next steps were. After receiving that visit, and Tony's call she didn't know how to feel about any of it.
However, a whistle broke her off. "Hey hot stuff...." Someone called behind her. Nayara tighten her helmet about her. But two men came closer to her. She glared at them with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, the night still young. Maybe..." But stopped when he looked up. Nayara smiled in mockery, leaning on her vehicle. The two of them palled. One of them drop off the knife he had been holding behind his back while the other tried to get Nayara's arm.
However, she took it and twisted it in one go. The brunette then knelt him on the balls, which he fell on the floor breathless. The shadow dropped behind Nayara. She turned just to spot the brief shadow of red costume.
"No...no..please." The man behind her said, looking at the shadow. He was looking at something that had moved. "Spare me...." He said to the shadow. Then a red metal bar rolled from the darkest corner towards them.
Nayara looked at it without fear, seeing its color. The man took off, holding his arm. The brunette picked up the bar and calmly walked to the shadows. She could see a brief shape, and extended her arm.
Her heart was racing since she was terrified of darkness. But she knew what laid beneath it. "You dropped this." Nayara said out loud.
A red gloved hand came to light, taking the bar. "Thanks." She heard him say, even if she couldn't see him. The red hand disappeared. However, she knew who was behind it.
"Who taught you the moves?" He asked her from the shadows.
Nayara heart dropped. "My friend, he is gone now." Nayara commented. Daredevil came slightly to the light. She wasn't terrified like most people, and Daredevil could heard that on her heartbeat. There was peace.
"You are hard to find." Daredevil said to her before turning to one of the roofs. Nayara followed his eyes, and sighed, knowing she had to probably climb.
But then she realized his words. "Wait...what? You were looking for me? But I haven't done anything." Nayara said in defense, raising her hands. Then Daredevil nodded back into the roof. She quieten down. She swore under her breath, following him up.
Once they were out of sight, Daredevil had turned to her once more. "Captain Rogers. He asked some of us to keep tabs on you. In case you ever came to the city." Daredevil said to her.
Nayara let out a sad smile. "Oh..." She realized she wasn't in trouble. "Thanks..." She sighed. Then she looked out to the night sky. "Thanks for helping me down there. I haven't gotten the hang of knives just yet." Nayara noted to him. She could see for a second a smirk on the hero's face.
Then she pointed at herself. "Does that mean I am not in trouble?" Nayara asked him. Daredevil shook his head. "Okay. I am a fan by the way." Nayara quietly noted to him. Daredevil scoffed to her.
"Heard of Daredevil?" He asked her curiously.
Nayara nodded, letting out a small laugh. "Heard rumors about him. I actually told him that if he needed new Avengers, you were a good option." Nayara said to him. "Nice to meet you." She said, even they had previously met before.
The brunette walked to the edge of the building. But she stopped, smiling to herself. "You know, maybe I move to Hell's Kitchen. I don't think anyone will bother me there. After all, it Daredevil's territory." She said before making her way down. Daredevil smiled to himself, accepting the compliment.
. . .
It turned out that her day hadn't really ended. A new troubles laid ahead. She saw the signs of people gathering around phones, talking about something. It wasn't until she spotted herself that she realized.
Up in the skies were lights, blasting each other off. One of them struggling to fight off the Sentinel holding him. Nayara frowned, seeing it blasted off finally for a second, before something crashed against him. An...armor?
The brunette stopped, swearing to the nearest by stander. "News? What's going on?" She asked a young woman with her friends.
"It's Iron Man." The woman said to her. Nayara saw the live footage, and spotted the armor whose light was red instead of light blue.
She swore, looking at the slight glitch in one of Tony's blasters. All before they took off. The brunette swore, and followed them. Tony held his ground the best he could, Nayara swirled from the busy high wall and into the road, trying to keep up with Tony the bets she could.
But the worst was yet to come. At one point, Tony could was able to defeat the armor. As he began falling he opened the attacker: nothing. He swore, as the system began to glitch even more.
The attacker suit slowly blinked. Tony heard JARVIS warning before trying to get away as soon as possible before the suit that attacked him exploded.
BOOM!
Nayara blasted her engine's off as she saw Tony's armor slowly fall down. "No...no...please...no!" She muttered under her breath as she began reaching dangerous speed, that Bruce would have for sure warned her about.
The brunette held her breath, seeing his armor crash against a set of tress before falling into a lake. Nayara stopped at the age, taking off her helmet. She threw her jacket away, before jumping into the lake.
Darkness was all she saw as she went down, deeper using her powers. Her tears mixed with the water around her, as she feared how she will need to bury someone else. A pain within her began, something she didn't expect at her for the tin man she looked up to.
She moved her hands, causing a bubble around the armor just as water began to sip through Tony's suit. He tried to hold his breath, knowing it was his end.
BLOOP! BLOOP!
Nayara sighed, taking off the helmet of Iron Man, causing the water to spill out, and Tony was able to breath. Tony frowned, hearing a voice? Was it his time to go?
"Tony, come on!" Nayara called out to him, shaking his suit the best she could. Tony frowned, recognizing the voice, he opened his eyes. Then he was met with Nayara's tearful face.
"Are...are those fish?" Tony said to himself, seeing the other habitats of the deep lake around the air bubble Nayara had created. Then he slowly snapped his head towards Nayara. "How...Nay....What?" Tony got quiet very quickly, making sense of it all.
Nayara let out a relived sigh, as the tears began to fall down her face. "Oh thank god...." Nayara said to herself, relived that she has gotten there just in time.
She looked at the bubble she had created and Tony did too. "How did you do that?" The question left Tony before he could process it.
The brunette avoided the answer. Instead she helped him seat back up. "I am getting you out. Okay." Nayara said to him, and she slowly lifted him up.
Using her powers, she created a bubble around them that lifted up and out. Once they were out, she helped Tony up to the shore.
The brunette rested at the shore, not uttering anything else. She was catching her breath. The near fatal crash of Tony scared her to the bone. A fear she didn't she had until now.
It was Tony that broke that silence. "You are one of them." Tony muttered under his breath. Nayara caught her breath looking at the ground. She sat down in trying to beat her calming heartbeat.
"You are one of them." Tony repeated it once more, louder this time. Nayara didn't meet his eyes. Instead she slowly stood up.
Tony swore, holding his chest. "You okay?" Nayara asked him. Tony nodded, but he was too shock for what he has just witnessed.
However, the silence that fell between them was broken. She could catch a glimpse of the sirens coming their way. And it was her time to go.
"Tony, please...not a word." Nayara said to him with a pleading look when she began to hear the sirens coming in. Then by the time Tony had a chance to turn around she was gone. As quick as a ghost. Tony didn't utter anything as people came to check up on him.
Nayara sighed, looking at the shadows in fright. He knew. She had saved Tony Stark's life but at what cost. Even if she had trusted Tony before, she knew the stand he had taken. He knew were he stood in the Mutant Registration Act, how he fought Steve Rogers.
So all she did was pray that she was at her escape route by the time he went looking for her.
. . .
Sobs reverberated through the halls of abandonment school. The wooden halls stopped comforting the brunette, as more fear settled on her heart. At all the messes she had created, this one was one of the worst.
A set of feet had followed the trail of wet steps she had left behind. The sobs became louder as Scott Summers turned the corner, to spot Nayara sobbing with her knees up to her chest. She didn't heard him, her ears rang due to the cries, and her focus was on one thought: Bruce Wayne giving her the most disappointed look at the fact that she had reveled the enemy her secret.
Scott knelt in front of her, looking at Nayara. "Nayara?" He asked her. Nayara finally looked up to him, her face red. She tried to brush the hair of her face, trying to speak.
"I @#$% up." Nayara mumbled breaking once more. She covered her face,
Scott put a hand on her shoulder, trying to help her snap out of it. "Come on, you will catch a cold." Scott warned her. Nayara sobbed even more.
"I mess up so bad, Scott. So...so bad." Nayara mumbled, shaking her head again and again. Scott remained silent looking to her. The brunette finally looked up. "I messed up, Scott..." Nayara said to him, finally looking up to him. In that moment, Scott saw the immense raw fear in her eyes.
"All I ever do is mess up, and people are going to pay for it." Nayara mumbled to him in panic. Her walls were down, her filter gone. All she was trying to hold on to was the safety of these walls. The ones she had known all her life.
Scott sent her a look. "Hey," He asked her.
Nayara cried even more. "That's all I ever do, mess up. Steve paid for it. I am menace...I messed up..." Nayara said looking down at the floor. As she cried, Scott nudged her hair.
He frowned at the broken hero. "Steve didn't pay for anything. He fought for something he believed in. Just like any member of this team did. You can't be blamed for that." Scott warned her. He watched as Nayara finally show her broken heart, her fears, and complete terror at this new world.
He slowly placed his hand in front of her. Nayara slowly looked up to him. "You aren't menace. You never were, Nayara." Scott tried to reassure her. "Just breath...breath..." Scott said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
The brunette let a few tears role down her face, hidden from view once more. "I...." She began but Scott stopped her.
"You aren't a menace." Scott warned her once more. He remained silent as Nayara began to calm down.
Once she was calm enough, she confessed her worry. "Tony knows..." Nayara said to Scott. "I messed up, and now he knows. He knows my secret, Scott." Nayara muttered softly.
Scott Summers waited for Nayara to voice her concerns, not pressuring her. "I know what side he took, Scott." Nayara said to him. Her voice was filled with dread as if it were her death sentence.
But Scott wasn't going to let her drown in her worries. "Come on, before you catch a cold." Scott reassured her, putting an arm around her shoulder. Nayara smiled, trying to dry off her tears. "Problems they always come up, we will work it out." Scott added.
Nayara was shocked at his patience. Here she was, terrified, crying her heart out, but not a complain or question. He was patient. She appreciated it, never having had that kind of support in the past. It slowly began to ease her nerves.
"Does it mean that I have to follow everything you say though?" She asked with unsure look.
Scott smiled at her, and she accepted it knowing it was a rare sight. "You can try to." Scott said to her. Nayara smiled.
"Is that a joke? Did I just heard you make a joke?" Nayara teased him, feeling a bit better. Then she let out a weak laugh. He followed. "I like jokes." She muttered to him. Scott nodded to her, as he helped the youngest member of the team.
. . .
The brunette sat silent by herself. She hadn't been able to fall sleep at all. "So did you get drunk and fell into a pool?" Gambit asked her. Nayara looked up curiously at him.
Nayara was unable to contain the smile when he saw him. "I wish..." She mumbled looking down at her tea. "What you doing up?" She asked him.
"Do see me asking the same thing to you?" Gambit asked her, walking to the spare seat near her. She had stopped crying, but anyone in the room could sense the tension and the anxiety around her. It was like an impending cloud that only the ones willing to listen saw.
Nayara didn't reply. "You didn't heard the...the cries?" She asked him in shame. Gambit shook his head, but she deep down knew.
"We do guards, it was my turn tonight. Cyclops keeps bossing everyone around." Gambit told her.
"You don't look like the one wanting to be team leader." Nayara quietly pointed out before seeping her tea.
"Not my thing." Gambit said to her.
"I will follow you into battle though." Nayara said to him. She sniffed a little, looking down at her tea as she thought of Gambit's word. A new dread filled her once more: he heard.
Gambit sat apposite to her. "Nayara?" He called out to her, pulling her out of her thoughts. "I try not to meddle in people's affairs. Unless they look as fearful as your mon cher." Gambit pointed out.
The brunette sighed looking up to him. "I am a beacon of trouble." Nayara commented to him as she looked down at her cup.
"Then you haven't met me." Gambit replied to her.
"I....saved Tony Stark from drowning. Now he knows I am a mutant too." Nayara confessed to him. But there wasn't a drop of judgement in Gambit. On the contrary, he seemed amused. "Why are you smiling like that?" Nayara asked him.
"Because I have been meaning to test my cards on that armors of his." Gambit said to her. Nayara smiled briefly. But Gambit briefly put jokes aside. "Cher, you are safe here. No one here will let you get taken." He added.
Nayara frowned even more. "What if I am the reason they fall? What if the Sentinels come this time?" Nayara questioned him.
"It wouldn't be the first time. We will fight them, clean up and rebuilt as always." Gambit reassured her.
Nayara smiled at him in return. "For a moment I considered leaving...." Nayara said as she thought about it. About how close she was to fleeing once more. "But the X-Men never do that." Nayara added. Gambit replied with a smile.
. . .
BOOM!
Nayara woke up at the sound of the booming thunder. The brunette sighed, sitting back up. She was able to sleep better after Gambit's words.
The brunette looked out the window as another flash of lighting started. This time it wasn't Storm practicing at all.
BOOM!
Another lighting flashed and the thunder followed. One that made the walls shake. The brunette sighed, sitting back up wondering how she will fall back sleep at the thunder.
SNAP!
The brunette jumped at the sound that came closer than the previous one. She sighed, picking up a sweater before leaving her room. She wasn't surprised to see Ice-Man a few steps down fully awake. But what confused her was Remy glaring at the window.
"You up too?" Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, said to Nayara.
"I think everyone is up." Nayara said to him. Another thunder light up the whole sky. "What's up with Gambit?" Nayara whispered to Bobby.
"No clue." Bobby said to him.
The brunette walked closer to him. As he glared at the storm. "Don't like storms?" Nayara whispered to him. Knowing that there was more to the glare.
But kept quiet, moving away from them. Nayara stared up at the cloudy sky, seeing another flash of lighting light up the whole building. However, she froze when she saw something pass in the sky.
BOOM!
The lighting hit near the entrance of the school. Bobby stood next to Nayara and froze when he spotted something across the lawn. Nayara spotted it too as soon as it landed. She frowned looking at it. "I thought I was the only visitor." Nayara commented to him.
Bobby pulled Nayara away from the window the second the person snapped their head towards them.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
The brunette heard Scott's voice down the hall. Someone outside.
Dread began to built up in Nayara's heart. All she thought would be Tony, or someone else. SHIELD agent. Bobby looked back at Nayara, seeing her fearful look. "Someone could have just gotten lost." Bobby tried to reassured her. "What's wrong?" He asked her.
"What if it's....." Nayara stopped at the sound of more voices down the hall.
BOOM!
The brunette jumped at the lighting that crashed near the building. Too close for her liking.
But her attention was drifted away by Logan who had walked up to Nayara. "What the hell is going on?" Nayara questioned him.
The sound of voices increased into murmurs. All until a yell made everyone quiet. One that ran across the empty halls of the school. "WHERE IS SHE!" The voice sounded. Nayara froze in her spot.
Bobby and Logan left to the sound of the voices, and Nayara followed them. The brunette found some of the members in the hall quietly spying on the person that had came in. "What the hell is going on?" Nayara asked as Colossus walked out and towards the hall. All she could see where shadows of the two people talking near the door.
She could recognize the slim shadow of Cyclops. Followed by a voice she couldn't recognize. They were muttering something to each other. By the looks of it, Cyclops wasn't happy at all. "I will ask you to leave one more time." Cyclops said, standing up. "She isn't here." He added.
Nayara frowned, stepping away from the group. She came closer to the edge of the hall. Colossus stepped up more into the debate. All in case back-up was needed. "I know she is here." The voice said to him.
The brunette stopped at the sound of her name. "Nayara daughter of Lilly is here." The voice said to them. Bobby whispered her to go back to their group as soon as he heard her name.
"She isn't here." Scott added once more with a rougher tone. Then she heard silence, one that signaled a confrontation.
Slowly, she looked down the hall despite Bobby's warnings. Logan groaned in frustration as she didn't listen. The brunette stopped when she saw who it was. In her shock she didn't hid as quickly as she would have wished.
The person turned to follow Scott's eyes, which had landed on Nayara. "Nayara." The person called out to her.
Before she knew it, they were a step away from her. "Thor..." Nayara commented looking up to the tall hero.
A smile broke out in his face. His cold demeanor gone, and now filled with pure joy. He pulled her into a tight hug. "Odin's bear!" He said to her. The brunette was too shock to hug back.
After the tight hug, Thor let go of her. He seemed way more at ease. "By the great Gods. You are alright..." He said to her.
"I am alright. Yeah." Nayara said to him. "How....why you here?" Nayara asked, worried that it will be because of the Avengers. Thor enthusiastically smiled at her.
"I was seeking you." Thor said to her. Nayara didn't smile in return. "You are wanted person." Thor said to her. But the brunette took it the wrong way and began to silently panic.
"What?" Nayara said in a hushed tone.
"Avenger's don't...." Scott began tying to help her but Thor finished.
"She is an Avenger." Thor said to him. Nayara got quiet at the statement. She was taken back at his firmness and honesty. The brunette sent a look to Scott, letting him know that it was alright.
. . .
Nayara looked curiously at Thor. She placed the cup of tea in front of him. "Why are you here, Thor?" Nayara asked curiously.
Thor accepted the cup, and thanked her. "I came to check up on you." Thor said to her. Everyone seems to be doing that these days. Nayara thought to herself. "You have been hard to find, Nayara." Thor said to her.
"Why are you here Thor?" Nayara asked once more with an uncertain tone. "Why are you trying to look for me?" She questioned.
Thor sighed looking at her. It was in this moment he realized she didn't know. "Loki escaped custody." Thor said to her.
"Okay." Nayara said as she looked at her cup. "I didn't do anything about it though. He has escaped authorities multiple times." Nayara commented.
"He was looking for you." Thor said to her. Nayara frowned. "My brother fled, looking for you. Captain Rogers was worried. You were his next target." Thor added.
Nayara froze for a second. She was Loki's next target? That didn't made any sense, but Thor didn't need to know that. "I am alright." Nayara said, looking up to Thor. But the smile didn't reach her face.
"I am sorry, about Captain Rogers." Thor said to her.
"So you know..." Nayara commented to him.
"Aye." Thor replied. "You weren't at the funeral. I wanted to pay my respects." Thor added.
Nayara stiffen thinking of her words carefully. "I..." But nothing came out. She couldn't figure out a lie. Panic began to settle once more, but Thor eased her worries. He sent her a smile. "I was...away." Nayara replied to him.
"I..." Thor stopped thinking of his words carefully. "For what is worth, Captain Rogers knew the brave warrior you were. Others might not see it now. But I do." Thor said to her.
The brunette smiled at him. "Thanks, Thor." Nayara said to him.
After finishing his tea, Thor stood up. "A word of advice, make amends with the dead. However hard it may be." Thor said as he stood up. "I should get going."
"Back to the Avengers?" Nayara questioned him. Thor stopped for a second giving her a questioning look. Instead of being excited, there was uncertainty. Something he wasn't expecting at all.
The brunette sighed, looking up to him. "Can I ask for a favor?" Nayara questioned him.
"Aye," Thor replied to her.
"Please, don't tell the others I am here. Don't tell the Avengers." Nayara said to him. Thor nodded in return.
"You have my word." As he placed his hand on the chest.
"Thank you." Nayara replied unsure if she could trust Thor to keep the secret.
. . .
The brunette sighed, sitting outside the school. Logan approached her. "Everyone is telling me to make amends." Nayara said, catching sight of Logan.
The hero sat next to her. "But how do you make amends with the dead?" Nayara questioned him. "I...I tried to push it away, the thought of him gone. Stuffing it all, acting as if was a big lie. All while trying to cope....I knew he was gone and I...I-It hurt me more than I wanted to admit." Nayara admitted to him.
A small tear rolled down her face. She let out a sarcastic laugh. "I wasn't there...the day he was buried...I haven't even....visited it." Nayara added.
Logan put an arm around her shoulders. "Death isn't easy." Logan said to her. "You don't have to make amends now, or in a week. You will do it at your own pace." Logan informed her.
"It feels like it isn't fast enough. I tried Logan....but I don't know how to." Nayara confessed.
"You start by making peace with yourself. You can't change the past, kid." Logan informed her.
The brunette brushed off the tears from her face. "I never got to....I never got to say goodbye. I never got to thank him for all that he did." Nayara added through the tears.
"Then you start with that." Logan said to her.
Silence fell between them for a moment. All while Nayara gathered herself once more. Logan sat beside her, reassuring her. "Have you called Emma?" Logan asked her.
"You haven't, have you?" Nayara questioned him.
"No." Logan replied to her.
"Okay." Nayara said pushing the issue away.
"If..." Logan began but Nayara cut him off.
"I have enough to deal with at the moment." Nayara said to him. "Hopefully, Emma doesn't know I am back. It will be safer that way, for both of us." Nayara said to him.
"Says who?" Logan questioned her. He knew the brunette needed support. There was no better option than Emma Frost. The person who loved her as her own daughter.
Nayara slowly stood up from her seat. "You worked by yourself all the time. I'm doing just that." Nayara replied.
"I also know when to call in for help." Logan corrected her.
"I can't." Nayara snapped back. "Sorry..." She sighed. The brunette paced around, thinking of her next words carefully. "If Emma were to get involved, I wouldn't be able to complete my mission. I am here looking for answers. Honestly, I will rather not led history repeat itself." Nayara said to him. The brunette turned around, getting ready to leave until Logan stopped her.
"Nayara?" Logan called out to her. The brunette turned to him. "I know where he is." Logan added.
. . .
Nayara clutched her white lilies. Somehow, her feet felt heavier on this place. But she followed Logan's instructions and walked passed the endless graves. She stopped on the one she had been trying to avoid.
Slowly, she knelt down and placed the fresh flowers on the grave site.
Steve Grant Rogers
Hero and friend
The brunette touched the tombstone. "Hi Steve..." She whispered looking at it.
A sob broke pass her lips. The wind picking it up, and carrying it across the site. "I..." The words died on her mouth. Sob after sob, she couldn't do it. She couldn't bare the pain inside of her that fell off like a storm.
"I am sorry...I am sorry." Nayara said as she crumbled down. "I miss you Steve..." Nayara cried. A wave of emotions passed through her. "Please forgive me...please." Nayara begged as she looked down at the ground.
She sniffed, looking sadly at the grave. "I am trying my best. Sharon....she is still out there Steve. I am trying to so hard to bring her to justice. But sometimes it feels like it isn't enough." Nayara said to him.
"It's my fault...It's my fault you are here...I can't stop it. I-I couldn't stop it. I am so sorry." Nayara said, pressing the flowers on the grave. "I am trying my best to stop her. But the world is different....I am scared half of the time." Nayara continued. "I don't want to admit it. Sharon is powerful, and I am trying to damn hard to defeat her. But I don't know how to....I don't want anyone else to
"I miss you." Nayara sighed. She took a deep breath, thinking of him. "I'm okay." She whispered to him. "I..." Nayara stopped thinking of Barry, Kara and Bruce. "I was safe. Emma sent me away, and I met some nice people....One of them, Bruce, said to make amends. That it will help....I don't know if it's working though." Nayara said out loud, but it was mostly to herself. "I just...wished you were here." Nayara said.
She brushed the tears off her face. Unknown to her, a pair of eyes had found her. But they didn't over stepped. "I will try my best to stop her...I just don't know how it will end." Nayara whispered with sadness.
The brunette dried her tears once more, looking sadly at the grave. However, she froze when she felt someone step up behind her. She slowly turned around, looked over her shoulder at who used to be her hero.
She quickly stood up and began leaving, ignoring the paces behind her. The brunette raced back to her motorcycle. She didn't hesitate to pick up her helmet, ready to flee. "Nayara!" The person yelled loudly, causing her to stop. "I just want to talk." They added.
Nayara's heart raced as she slowly turned around to look at Tony Stark. "There is nothing to talk." Nayara said to him.
Tony stood in front of her motorcycle. "Nayara..." He began but she cut him off.
"There is nothing to talk about." Nayara corrected him.
Tony took a step back seeing the fear in her eyes. All because of him. "Nayara...." He called out to her once more. The brunette sighed. "We need to talk." Tony added with a more stern look.
But she could guess what the subject was. "I didn't kill him." Nayara said to him, looking at him straight in the eyes.
"I know." Tony sighed.
The brunette looked down at the keys in her hand. "Nayara, I am just trying to make things right." Tony pleaded. "I know you didn't do it, Nayara. I know that! But SHIELD doesn't." Tony added.
Nayara sighed looking down at her helmet. "I just want to help. That's all." Tony said to her.
She wanted to believe him, but she was struggling. Especially now that he knew her secret. "I know which side you took Tony....I just..." Nayara stopped herself. She didn't know if she could trust him.
"I just want to help." Tony repeated once more.
Nayara held back her tears. "I..." Her words died in her mouth once more.
"I know I can't change the past." Tony said to her, knowing the fear in her eyes was because of him. A fear that wasn't there before. He was fully conscious on the decisions he had made during the war.
Decisions he now regretted.
"I wouldn't tell a soul. I promise." Tony said to her. Nayara's fear increased. "Let me make things right." Tony added.
Nayara looked to him. "I know Nayara. I know about it, I promise I wouldn't tell a soul." Tony said to her, lowering his walls.
She saw the pain in his eyes. The honesty in them. Even if she was scared, she also knew deep down the type of person Tony was. "I want to help you." Tony said to her softly.
The brunette then reached out to him. Tony wasn't expecting the hug, but he hugged back nonetheless. It was a sign of trust. It may take time to amend what trust was broken. He knew that.
. . .
Nayara held her jacket tighter to herself, following Tony inside the Avenger's Mansion. The ones lively place was mostly shut-down but whose fault was that? The brunette looked curiously at Tony as he stopped half-way through the stairs.
"Rogers...he built a room for you." Tony said to her.
Nayara nodded at him. "Alright." She answered.
"If you need a place to stay..it's there." Tony said to her. She could sense he was kind of weirded out by it all. "You are staying back at Emma's or somewhere else?" He asked her.
"I am safe." Nayara answered him. She knew where the question was coming from mostly. "When you said you wanted to help, what did you meant?" She asked him.
Tony crossed his arms over his chest. A self-defense mechanism Nayara fully noticed. "I meant it." He said to her.
She shrugged at him "I suspect you want to run a test. So I will tell you that I am fine. I wouldn't let you run any of them." Nayara said to him. Tony sighed, closing his eyes for a second. He was trying his best to keep it together. Nayara wasn't helping.
"I am not running test on you. I just wanted to..." Tony began but Nayara cut him off.
"Check if I am alright. Well, I am." Nayara said. The anger and fear getting the best of her. "You can't change it, nor control it. So you can't help me with that." Nayara said, thinking back about her powers.
Tony sighed once more. "I never asked about your powers, Nayara. I wasn't going to...." Tony stopped himself once more. He was struggling just as much as Nayara. "How can I help you?" Tony asked her.
Nayara took a deep breath. She thought about SHIELD, Rumlow, and of Tony. She knew his side, but didn't fully trust him. Not like she used to at least.
After a moment of silence, she spoke up. "You can help me finding intel about Sharon Carter." Nayara said to him. She knew she was playing her cards right. Or at least she hoped so. Because she knew deep down Tony was a good man, and if he really was trying to make things right, he will help her.
Tony frowned, remembering his conversation with Maria Hill. "You got to promise not to tell a single soul from SHIELD. You can't trust them." Nayara said to him.
"I don't work with SHIELD." Tony corrected her.
"You were on the same side." Nayara added quickly.
"We were. I am not them, Nayara." Tony replied.
Nayara sighed looking at him. His words were a wake up call. "I know." She admitted in defeat.
"Just so you know Tony, keep an eye out for them. They are HYDRA after all." Nayara added as she picked up her stuff. Tony froze for a second, watching the brunette go.
"But I got the intel? You sure you don't want to stay here? I mean with SHIELD and all." Tony said to her. He meant it. Steve Rogers was gone, and it was now his duty to carry his promise. It went beyond the guilt he felt for what he had done. He knew she didn't had that many people and knew the feeling of being alone in the world. Not that he cared to admit it.
Nayara sighed, knowing that the words she will choose might hurt him. But he needed to know the truth. "I don't feel safe here." Nayara said but stopping on the door. "Tony, I will be fine. Is not the first time I have been alone." Nayara reassured him before walking away.
Tony Stark leant on the living room wall, thinking of the words. A place that once caused so much wonder for her was now gone.
. . .
"What did Stark want?" Logan asked, seeing the brunette read an old book. She laid on the couch near the fire.
Nayara didn't deter her eyes from the pages. "He wanted to talk to me. Apparently he was looking to find me since Rumlow has me on his list." Nayara sadly said to him. Logan remained silent. "No attacking SHIELD, alright?" Nayara said, looking back at him. He grunted but remained silent. "I already lost Steve and I can't loose you either. Because if that happens, I will be alone. And terrified. Who is going to watch my back if you aren't around? Who going to track me?" Nayara said with a raised eyebrow.
Logan narrowed his eyes at her. Nayara did an exaggerated sniff, as imitating him. "Yeah...here is Nayara. Found her." Nayara said in a gruff voice. Nayara then cracked a small at her spot on expression of Wolverine.
Then she sent him another knowing look. "I know...I want to punch SHIELD agents too but you don't see me doing it. No, because if I do they will come for everyone else. So I am self-restraining." Nayara said as she went back to her book.
"Warn Stark that if he shows his face around here..." Logan began but Nayara raised her hand as she made sound effects. "Snikt snikt! I know." Nayara replied. Logan smiled, knowing the brunette was also amused by his reaction.
"Not going to tell me off?" He asked curiously.
Nayara raised her eyes to him. Then she let out an amused smile. "Please, I know you Logan. I actually amused by it." Nayara noted. "Plus, it's one of the reason why I like you in the first place." She said before raising her fist like him, and made sound effects as if claws were coming off.
Logan finally smiled at her. Then she sent him a childish smile in return before going back to her book.
