Brick in the wall: the Contact
"I'll stay here and watch the street." - Adler reassures me while I'm going on.
I glance him one more time and notice that he still smiling. Damn, is it that obviously that I'm jealous of Park? And why did he tell me that Park isn't in love with him? Don't tell me that he thought-.
"Schau wohin du gehst!" - a stranger screams when I dump on him.
Shit. He just told me to look where I go.
"I'm sorry!" - I apologize picking up his umbrella and giving it back to him.
He stands up and cleans his expensive clothes.
And he's still muttering, I guess insults, in German.
I can hear Adler laughing behind his hiding place.
But when the stranger notices that I'm a girl he suddenly changes his mind and starts to apologies for his bad attitude.
"Uhm- I have to go." - I say with a fake smile.
"Wait Miss! Where do you live?" - he asks with a strong German accent.
When the man pronounces those words Adler immediately comes out.
"Hey! I'm her boyfriend. Leave her alone." - he says with a deep voice.
The stranger seems to be afraid of Adler's authority, then he apologies again and quickly goes away.
I feel much better now.
"Fuck you Adler. If it wasn't for your stupid presence I've could completely focus on my mission. And I could handle the situation by myself!" - I look around, making sure nobody noticed us.
The German soldiers are checking every stranger on the road, I must be careful.
"And why can't you focus on the mission? Blaming my presence is not an excuse." - he says with a smirk.
"Because... because..." - I don't know what to say. " Didn't you say that you have other stuff to do? "
"My stuff to do" - he says evidencing these words -" is also preventing situations like these."
"And what kind of excuse is this?" - I ask laughing.
" My job is not only to fight with weapons, sometimes I also have to lie."
"Okay, you win. Thank you, by the way."
" You're cute."
"What?"
Oh my god, did he really say that?
"Just hurry up. We don't have much time." - he goes back to his hiding place.
I turn around and go ahead to the bar: it has a yellow light all around so it's not difficult to individuate.
Now I'm in the front of the door but I don't have the nerve to open it.
I will screw up... I know it.
I put my hand on the handle.
"Go to the bar and met the Contact, Bell." - Adler says trough the radio.
I look back one more time; it's still raining but I don't care about that.
The soldier troops are busy examining other people, and if the next will be me?
I feel powerless without Adler, I feel... alone.
But I can't disappoint him again.
I sigh and open the door.
The atmosphere in the bar is welcoming and full of people.
The ceiling is decorated with little German flags and coats of arms.
The light is dim, just the way I like it.
There are many tables and a bar man behind a counter. He's busy serving two men.
Some clients are playing cards or finishing their meals.
A warm air flies around me.
Finally I'm not cold anymore. The German weather is always full of showers.
Adler said that the Contact has a blue umbrella... but I don't see any woman here, and any blue umbrella.
I decide to go ahead between the tables.
I can hear a conversation of a young couple on my right.
"And no redactions like Martin over here." - the lady says.
"You need to stop listening to your mother. All she thinks about these days is nuclear war. It's crazy." - the man replies.
I would like to say that she's not crazy at all, we have the same fear at the Safehouse.
"There is no 'after the movie' part." - he adds.
"The Contact has a blue umbrella." - Adler repeats on the radio.
Yeah yeah, I get it. But where?
The end of the bar is almost here and I still didn't-.
A woman with ginger hairs and a cigarette in her hand is sitting alone in a desert area of the bar. And a blue umbrella is hanging from a chair near to her. I smile. Bingo.
I sit in front of the Contact.
"My friend! I'm so happy you made it!" - she says cordially in German.
Then she looks around to be sure nobody is watching us and lower her voice.
"Kraus is at the table over my right shoulder." - she wishpers.
It's the moment to activate the listening device Adler gave me for this mission.
I take a fake pack of cigarettes from my pocket and open it. I extract the device and point the feeler on the Kraus's direction.
It's the first man I saw entering in the bar.
I can notice that a waitress comes near him.
"Good evening, sir. What can I get for you?"
The best thing of that device is that you can hear everything the people say around you without being caught.
"I'll have a Berliner Weisse please." - Kraus replies.
"Audio is loud and clear. Now we wait for Volkov." - Adler says trough the radio.
The Contact poses her cigarette in the ashtray.
"Hudson didn't reveal much- he said you're after Volkov?" - she says taking a glass. "By the way, my name's Greta."
She talks with a strong German accent. I'm glad she's on America's side.
"Nice to meet you, Greta. I'm Bell. It's hard to find a woman working for the CIA these days."
"Oh I know who you are. You are... pretty famous."
"What do you mean?" - I ask confused.
"Oh nothing." - she laughs.
I bet that Adler has to do with it in some way.
"What do you know about the courier over there?" - I ask.
"Kraus is ex-Stasi so don't let him wholesome appearance fool you; the man is a killer."
"By seeing his photos I thought he wasn't evil that much. How long will Volkov be in Berlin?"
"Who knows? The man's like a ghost. I would guess no more than a day."
"The police are out in large numbers tonight." - I remember the troops of German soldiers outside. Especially when a troop busted us outside the underground. But I keep this information for me and Adler.
"One of my informants was picked up in a random sweep, just two blocks from here. The Stasi must assume there are more nearby." - Greta says worried. - " I would ask a favor of you. He will nit hold up under torture for long. We need him rescued... or silenced. They're holding him here."
She passes me a piece of paper.
"I'll see what I can do."
"Danke." - she thanks me in German.
She seems a very good person. I would like to know her more after finding Perseus.
"Heads up, Bell. I think Volkov is walking in." - Adler advises me.
A man opens the bar's door and reaches Kraus.
"Where is Volkov?"- Kraus asks worried.
It's not him.
"You were followed. Go home and wait for our call. There will be a new time and place. We'll take care of the tail." - the German male says.
After hearing these words I turn pale.
The two men goes out of the bar.
"How do they know?!" - I say angrily.
"Bell, we've got trouble. There's too Stasi entering the bar. Get out of there, now!" - Adler screams trough the radio.
When Adler finishes talking two soldiers open the door. They're armed.
Fuck.
"Scheisse.... Go through the bathroom, I'll hold them off." - Greta says.
"But- I can't leave you here!"
The soldiers are coming closer and closer.
"Just go! You're life is more important than mine!"
I stand up and go to the bathroom wich is on my left.
I open the door and get in, then I close it quickly.
The wall is full of graffiti and the smell is terrible. A total different reality from before.
I look myself in the mirror: all I can see is a tired girl with untidy hair and a muddy dress.
Then I hear a man vomiting inside one of the toilet cabin here and somebody knocks at the bathroom door.
"Team, new plan. Meyer outside Kraus's apartment. He's still out ticket to Volkov." - says Adler.
"Stasi! Open the door!" - they knock at the door again.
They will be here at any moment!
God, where should I go?
I look around myself and notice an open window. Finally!
I'm too short to reach it by myself so I hang out on a tube on the ceiling and use it to swing to the window.
I'm sorry for leaving you behind, Greta.
But if there will be a chance to meet you again I won't lose it.
