Clueless

Our teammates are still talking between them when Adler and I come inside the safehouse.
The clime is warm and not cold anymore; finally I can feel the point of my nose and fingers again.
Thank god Adler didn't notice my breakdown, it would be so awkward.
The conversation with Adler outside made me calm down and forget everything.
Everything except him and the dawn above us.
Does he has such a big power over me?
I take advantage of this little piece of time to examine all the evidence we have about the mission Fracture Jaw.
I reach the board and open the files "Fracture Jaw" .
The first evidence is a photo of Camp Haskins.
On the photo there are helicopter in the blue sky, many palms around the place with some soldiers playing cards. It seems a nice camp with a great atmosphere.
Yeah, it's the calm before the storm.
I read what the files says about it:
Eight thousand miles from home.
Located just north of Da Nang, Camp Haskins was a part of a conglomeration of US military bases that supported the Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force.
Russell Adler's MACV-SOG team was briefly stationed there in the fall of 1967 and into the early winter of 1968. This photo was taken on a rare day without rain during the region's winter monsoon season. Jr was during this week at Da Nang that Adler's team discovered evidence of Perseus in Vietnam.

I was there with Adler. He told me that. I hope I'll remember this soon. Maybe since there we were close and that's way I feel in this way around him...
The second evidence is another photo of...
Crap, that's Lawrence Sims with... Russell Adler! Oh my god!
He's wearing jeans with a military tight polo which evidences his muscles even more.
In his hands he holds a big weapon.
He has a fisherman hat on his head. He looks so funny in it!
I start laughing and accidentally didn't notice Adler, who was observing me all the time.
"What are you laughing at?" - he asks coming closer.
I turn around and hide the photo behind my back.
"Oh, uh... nothing." - I try to smile. "I was just looking at the evidences about Fracture Jaw."
I know he didn't fall for it.
He's taller than me so I have to look up to reach his eyes.
"You're such a bad liar, Bell." - he says with a smirk, coming closer more and more. "Show me that or..."
He looks around to be sure nobody is watching us. Luckly everyone is busy .
We're so close that I feel his warm breath on my neck. He smells of cigarette and mint.
A magic atmosphere grows around us, excluding our teammates outside.
"Or?"- I challenge him.
His blue eyes hypnotize me.
With a fast movement he takes the photo from my hands. Fuck. I didn't notice Adler was slowly moving his arm to reach my back.
"Hey! Give it back!" - I laugh.
"Are you impressed, Bell? Because your face tells me that." - he says with a smirk.
"One of those days I need to teach you this technique of manipulation or you will end helping a totally healthy enemy when he will try to ask your help."
He looks at the photo in his hands.
"Oh, let me guess. You were laughing of my handsome cap, weren't you?" - he asks.
"Yeah but... you look cute in it."
Gosh, what did I say?!
"Really?"
"Um, really."
"I find you cute too." - he smiles, gives back the photo and walks away.
My face become all red. I want to scream of happiness. I can't believe he just called me cute! Wait, why I enjoyed that? Calm down Bell, it was just a compliment between good friends. That's what we are, or at least I think.
The files says:

Shared joy, shared suffering.
After Lawrence Sims graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, he entered the Army, where he served for two years before joining the ranks of the Central Intelligence Agency.
His first major assignment placed him ok Russell Adler's MACV-SOG team in Vietnam, where he immediately became one of Adler's favorite cohorts. By the end of their time there, Sims was also Adler's most trusted confidante. He has been a mainstay ok Afler's various team ever since.

I watch Adler's face one more time on the photo and put it back.
If you're only my teammate Adler, then why I can't stop thinking about you?
The third evidence is an U.S Army Calendar of 1967. The paper is yellow and a little ruined.
It signs the month of September, October, November and December.
On the month of October there are some red crosses. I guess it was important.
I read what it says:

Biding their time.
The studies and Observation Group ( MACV-SOG), began convert missions in Vietnam in 1964. In July 1967, Russell Adler and his small team of MACV- SOG operatives were sent by the Central Intelligence Agency to the Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam.
While training and often operating alongside the other battalions that moved in and out of the area over moths, Adler's group always had an ear to the ground, listening for any word of Soviet activity. When a viable rumor appeared, they would move on their own to investigate. It wasn't until January 1968 that the CIA finally confirmed the presence of Perseus.

So we've actually found his presence but didn't capture him. That makes sense.
All those files talks in most parts about Adler.
I need to find out if something happened between me and him in this mission.
The fourth evidence is a Fracture Jaw Memo.

CITE: MAC 02913. 15 DECEMBER 1967
DTG: 1025
FROM: GENERAL LESLAND COMUSMA CV
TO: ADMIRAL BRIDGEMORE SIN CPAC HAWAII

REFERENCE CINPAC 062340Z FEB 68 FRACTURE JAW COMUSMA CV OPLAN FRACTURE JAW HAS BEEN APPROVED BY ME. PUBLICATION IS NOW IN PROGRESS AMD PLAN WILL BE DISPATCHED BY ARMED FORCES COURIER SERVICE 11 FEB.
ETA HONOLULU ARMED FORCES COURIER STATION 113290W FEB.

I read the file to understand more of this memo:

A knockout blow.
The events in Da Nang during January 1968 revealed an embarrassing vulnerability in the Fracture Jaw plan. It was immediately scrapped before any additional damage could be done.

I pass to the third evidence. It's a polaroid of a Fracture Jaw Nuclear Device.

Keeping one's weapon out of another's hands.
As the fortunes of US military in Vietnam declined, senior military officers, including General William Westmoreland, began to enact a top secret plan: the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Vietnam. Perseus learned of this plan, codenamed Fracture Jaw, as well as the storage location of one of the first bombs sent into the country.

Finally I examine the last evidence: a Lawrence Sims' survival knife.

Sometimes you need more than your wits.
One morning in early January 1958, MACV-SOG Operator Lawrence Sims left Da Nang Air Base with USAF Airman Darren Kopp for a routine recon mission. After experiencing mechanical difficulties, their chopper touched down in a jungle clearing fifteen miles outside the base.
While waiting for assistance, they were ambushed by Viet Cong and forced to flee into the jungle. Ops was killed I'm a combat. Sims, ammo exhausted, took Koop's knife and circled the clearing perimeter. He managed to take out three soldiers by hand before reinforcement arrived and secured the malfunctioning chopper.
Sims never parted with the knife after that incident. It now hangs from the board as a good charm.

Wow, that was so close! Sims was brave.
We only survive making good choices.
"Alright people! Break time is over!" -
announces Adler.
I take a sit on the Adler's desk, Sims on a chair and Mason with Woods remain standing on their feet.
Adler and Park reach the board, one for a side, to explain better the plan. I wonder why they choose her when they have me.
Park starts to talk about the same damn things: we need to stop Perseus bla bla... We need to analyze every clue that we can find about him in our past missions bla bla...
I don't know why but I hate when Park is near to Adler, it make me turn nervous.
I wanna be on her place, near to him.
Am I jealous? Stop thinking about that!
He was my teammate for years, thing didn't change, understand that Bell! Says a voice in my head. But my brain tells me that this is not just friendship and I have to accept that.
So, if it's not only friendship, then what is it ?
I will only understand that in the future.
I sigh: I have no other choices but listening now.
But I can't take off my eyes from her. Park has a familiar face like I thought yesterday. Too  familiar... She seems-.
"Alright Bell, we're going back to Vietnam. First time Perseus pinged our radar." - Adler calls me.
I gasp and try to focus on the mission and not to my thoughts. They can wait.
So, as they said, I know more than them.
They count on me to remember every singolo detail. But how the heck can I do that? I told Adler that I forgot everything!
"It was late January, '68. We were joint CIA SOG taskforce, embedded within the 3rd Marine Regiment near Da Nang. SOG was there to sniff out Soviet activity. Word had it Russian operatives were active in the region." - continues Adler.
"Perseus had no known presence in Vietnam."- Park interrupts him.
"That changed at Da Nang. Somehow Perseus knew about Operation Fracture Jaw." - he informs her.
Perseus must be an intelligence man with many resource if he really discovered the CIA's plans. We need to be careful.
"Fracture Jaw? That one went sure sideways." - remembers Sims.
And this mission failed too.
"We launched out of Camp Haskins." - says Adler.
"Yeah, I'll never forget that shithole." - admits Sims.
"Good, we want those memories. No detail's too small, a face, a name. We're looking for anything that can lead us to Perseus." -says Park.
"This feels like looking for a needle in a haystack...In a field of haystacks."- notices Sims.
Yeah, it seems to me too.
"Maybe. But that needle's somewhere." - says Adler.
Right Adler, but the problem is: where?
He looks straight at me, like he knows what I thought in my mind.
"Remember... we had a job to do."
His cold eyes penetrate mine, till my soul.
And that's when I suddenly remember my past again.
