#1: Pilot Chapter
Zoom out of the character Joseph, as he's laying on the ground and slowly but surely opening his eyes. Double page showing that he's in outer space, laying on top of an infinite white walkway made of stardust.
Joseph stands up, mumbles in confusion, and starts looking around his surroundings. After a while, he realizes that his entire body is shining white, with his aura being very visible around him. He quickly gets scared, thinking he's on fire. As he realizes he's not in pain, and calms down, a voice exactly like his sounds from behind.
"YOU SURE TOOK A LOONG TIME TO FINALLY WAKE UP"
A person exactly like Joseph shows up standing, not shining white, but having a quarter of his deadpan face missing and slowly disintegrating like confetti.
_Joseph: WHAAAAA!
_Joseph #2: You wanna stop?
After arguing for a while, the second Joseph confirms that they're in space, and explains that they're actually the same person, just separated components of their whole being.
"WE ONCE THEORISED ABOUT THIS, REMEMBER? HUMANS ARE MADE OF THREE COMPONENTS: BODY, MIND AND SOUL. IF GOD AND SOULS EXIST, THEN THERE SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT HELPS US CONNECT THE BODY TO THE SOUL, OTHERWISE THEY COULD DEVELOPE INTO DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES.
THAT CONNECTOR WOULD BE THE MIND, A COMPONENT THAT LINKS THE CONCRETE WITH THE ABSTRACT, A COMPONENT THAT CAN EXIST BETWEEN BOTH REALMS AND KEEP THEM LINKED. YOU ARE THE SOUL, AND I AM THE MIND, JOSEPH"
After "Mind" explains minor details, "Soul" feels relieved, but then talks out of ignorance:
_Soul: Ok I get it now, interesting. But I mean, this sure is one crazy dream I'm imagining at this moment, even I am impressed by how fantastic and surreal all of this is!
_Mind: ...Uhm...Joseph...this is not a dream...
WE ARE DEAD
Absolute silence, "Soul" tries to put himself together, and the dialogue continues.
_Soul: What? I don't get it...
_Mind: There is nothing to "get", we are dead. Do you see "Body" anywhere around here? No. That's because he's right now a corpse, Joseph.
_Soul: ...
_Mind: ...
_Soul: Ok ok, this dream is obviously getting out of...
Suddenly, a memory sparks in Soul's head, showing him in an abandoned building, laying dead on the floor next to a girl with straight-cut bob hair. The girl is laying in a position similar to Joseph, with her eyes closed as well.
Soul screams his lungs out, cries, and his body trembles.
_Soul: WHAT IS THIS?! WHAT...NO...THERE'S NO WAY! WHY DOES IT FEEL SO REAL?! WHY?!
_Mind: Because it IS real, Joseph. It seems that at the very least your soul has the memory of the moment of your dead.
_Soul: No... I don't get this... why...Is this...IS THIS SUICIDE?! NO! I WOULD NEVER COMMIT SUICIDE! THIS MAKES NO SENSE, WHY? I'M NOT SUICIDAL! NO I'M NOT!
Soul starts to shake and store negative feelings. His aura charges up and releases a huge explosion of energy (make the explosion scene at least 3 pages), as he screams alongside it. When the explosion ends, he realizes what just happened, and sees in shock that now Mind has lost a portion of his shoulders, and his entire left forearm has been ripped out. Soul stares at Mind, feeling guilty.
_MIND: ...I mean, don't feel so guilty about this, I'm going to vanish away anyways, and it's not your fault.
_Soul: V-vanish... you're going to vanish? Why?
_Mind: I am just the mind, Joseph. Only you, the soul, is meant to go to the afterlife, I'm only staying alive for as long as I'm lucky to be allowed.
(Silence)
_Soul: Wait wait wait, slow down, there's an afterlife?
_Mind: Yeah, it seems like it.
_Soul: ... WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "SEEMS LIKE IT"?!
_Mind: First of all, it's a convenient idea, don't you think? If you believe in the afterlife, then you would be happy to have it, because no mortal being actually wants to die and stop existing, right? Also, even in the case that it doesn't exist, the idea itself is powerful enough to give ease and resolve for a person to die in peace. Either way, this is a win-win condition, you get nothing negative out of this.
_Soul: ...
_Mind: Oh look, look behind you, Joseph.
As Soul looks behind, he realizes that at the very far end of the walkway, there's a source of light. Minimal, but there is one. Out of reflex, Soul panics, and tries to run away in the opposite direction. However, this is in vain, as it is shown that Soul is running in place, not even moving a meter away, no matter how fast he moves.
_Mind: I tried that already, by the way. Running away is useless, cuz this walkway seems to move automatically and much faster than us, towards that light. It won't let us escape.
_Soul: WHAT?!
_Mind: Ok so... let me find an example.
Mind spots the planet Saturn in the distance and points with his arm at it. From a global point of view of the story, it is shown that Saturn "moves" further to the right, and Mind has to reposition his arm, until eventually Saturn is too far away to be seen.
_Mind: See? I've tried this many times with other objects, there is no doubt that this walkway is like a conveyor transporting us to the afterlife.
Before Mind realizes, Soul jumps in desperation out of the walkway, and falls into the emptiness of space. Mind looks down where Soul felt, but then changes his view into the middle of the walkway. Seconds later, Soul's screams are heard, and he ends up falling from above, crashing flat against the surface of the walkway.
_Soul: Ugh...Agh...just, what the hell just...
_Mind: YEAH, I TRIED THAT TOO, BY THE WAY.
Injured, Soul stands up, and surprisingly starts to stare very angrily at Mind. Even he reacts confused against this sudden behavior. Soul starts crying again, and grabs Mind by his clothes.
_Soul: How...How can you be SO CALM?! WE ARE DEAD, WE'RE DEAD, AND ALL YOU'VE BEEN DOING IS ACT LIKE AN ARROGANT PUNK, HOW IS IT YOU'RE NOT FEELING ANYTHING, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? ARE YOU NOT ME? WHY ARE YOU SO CALM? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! HELP ME, DAMN IT!
(Silence)
_Mind: I can't.
_Soul: Uh?
_Mind: Joseph, I am just the mind, I only contain some of the memories of our previous life. That's it, I'm only reasoning, I cannot express any emotion, I am not made to do that, unlike you, the soul.
_Soul: ...
_Mind: To be very honest, I ENVY YOU. You can cry and scream and get angry as much as you like, you have the right to do so, because no one wants to die.
(Silence)
_Mind: However, as for me, all I can do is have this idea of getting angry, of crying, of feeling sad. No matter how many times I tell myself about these feelings, I cannot express them. If I could feel anything about this, it would be something like "DYING OF ANGUISH".
_Soul: ...
_Mind: But, I guess it's better for me like this, because sooner or later I'm going to die too. The body is dead, I can't go to the afterlife, and then there's you but...isn't this ironic?
"THE ONLY ONE WHO WILL NOT DIE IS THE ONLY ONE ALLOWED TO SUFFER"
Silently, Soul stops grabbing Mind. Shortly after, Mind looks at his feet, and realizes that they're halfway already vanished.
_Mind: Enough drama, I'm running out of time. Joseph, there is a reason I was waiting for you to wake up. Now tell me, do you have any memories right now when you were alive?
_Soul: Eh? Me? Eh... not really, only the memory of my death.
_Mind: I see, then this is indeed a big problem.
_Soul: Why? What happened?
_Mind: I barely have about 45% of our memories. That's too little. If you have almost no memories, and I have less than half, then that means...that our body must have retained the rest of our memories when we died.
_Soul: Ah? But you're the mind, shouldn't you have like a copy of all our memories?
_Mind: In the time I was waiting for you to wake up, I was thinking about that. The only simple explanation, is that because we had a quick and painful dead, I wasn't able to accept that fact, and as a result I didn't have time to prepare a "save file" of our memories. All I could do was recover our strongest felt memories, that's it.
_Soul: Uhm, I think that makes sense, if you died for natural reasons, then the mind has all the time in the world to process and store all the memories of your lifetime.
_Mind: Exactly, but right now it's too late for me to solve this problem, I'm sorry.
_Soul: But, this is still not okay. We can't have so little. There has to be a way to get the remaining memories!
_Mind: That is up to you to figure out, perhaps you do have them, they may be... just asleep, inside of you. But who knows, either way you have an eternity to find out.
_Soul: ...
(Silence)
Mind checks his feet AND REALIZES THAT HIS LEGS HAVE COMPLETELY VANISHED. Now, he remains floating midair.
_Mind: Ok that's enough, I'll transfer to you all of my memories asap.
