Memories : Chapter 2
14 years old Wei Zhan was walking back to home after a boring school day. Plodding on the footpath, he was staring at the busy road beside him. Though he was the heir of Wei groups, he preferred walking to school alone without any bodyguards. No matter how many times Lee Huan had requested him to let him accompany the young master, the latter always denied politely, saying that he wanted to lead a life like common people, not like some son of CEO.
"Why everything is so boring?" Wei Zhan pouted, looking at the cars speeding along the road.
Suddenly his eyes fell on a small grey kitten in the middle of the road, trying to cross it. The kitten was jumping carefully, escaping from getting hit by the gigantic cars.
"Ai? Even the small kitten is so careful while crossing the road!" Zhan giggled as he watched the kitten. I think I should help it. What if some car hits the poor little creature?
Zhan stood staring at the traffic lights, waiting for for the red signal. No sooner had the red light appeared as the stop traffic signal, Zhan rushed to the kitten.
Kneeling beside the kitten, he lifted the adorable creature in his small hands. Giggling, he caressed its soft fur. "Awww...you are so cute. Why are you alone here? Where are your parents little one?" Zhan smiled as buried his small fingers in the kitten's fluffy fur. "If you are another, I will adopt you. Hm?"
Zhan was so absorbed in talking with the kitten that he didn't notice that the traffic signal changed to green. Suddenly a heavy honk of a car grabbed his attention. For a moment he was motionless. He couldn't understand what he should do. He felt like his cognition stopped for a while. Everything appeared in a slow-motion in his eyes. He could see the black car was speeding towards him, ready to crush him mercilessly.
Before he could scream, he felt someone pushed him aside, saving him. As a result of the impact of the force, Zhan's head hit a rock and the thick crimson liquid started to ooze out from his forehead.
Forcing his eyes to keep open, he saw a boy of almost his age was trying to stand up. It seemed like while saving Zhan, that boy injured his leg. Zhan tried to move but suddenly he felt his head became light weighted. He could feel everything was turning into black slowly. But at that moment, his eyes caught a peculiar mark, better say a tattoo of a flower on the wrist of the boy who saved him. As if he had recognized that unknown boy, he tried to sit up but abruptly the entire world seemed to be spinning for him and before he could lose his consciousness, a single word escaped from his lips.
"B-bestie~"
"Bestie!"
Zhan woke up with a shudder, sitting on his king-sized comfy bed. Drops of sweat settled on the soft skin of his forehead. Breathing heavily as if be had run a marathon, 21 years old Zhan turned his head aside only to find his pet grey cat was sleeping sounding, curling itself into a ball of fur.
Letting out a deep sigh, he extended his hand, aiming for his phone. Checking the time, he slumped into the bed again.
"Why do I have to wake everything at 3 am?" Zhan groaned in frustration. Since 7 years, he had problems in sleeping. He would always end up wake up in the middle of the night. No doctor in the world had a solution to cure this problem.
When 14 years old Zhan opened his eyes, he found himself laying on a white hospital bed with an unbearable pain on his forehead. Intending to search for his 'bestie', he was about to get up when his father stopped him.
Since that day, Zhan was accompanied by Lee Huan and bodyguards and he had to go to school by car. After that day he never saw his 'bestie' ever again.
"Bestie, where are you now? It has been 11 years since we last met properly." Zhan sighed sadly, staring at the starry ceiling, reminiscing the first meeting with his bestie.
Flashback
A 10 years old boy was sitting in the park alone with his bodyguards standing around him. He was staring at the other kids who were playing happily. Pouting, he was fiddling his fingers while a glassy layer of tears covered his eyes, making it impossible for him to stare at those kids.
No matter how many times he tried to befriend the other children, they always ignored him, saying that he was a rich kid and he didn't belong to an ordinary park like them.
"Why don't they play with me?" Little Zhan sniffed as the tears rolled off his eyes.
"Friend?"
A boy's cheerful voice echoed, making Zhan look at him.
"A-are you looking for m-me?" Zhan shuttered, pointing at himself.
"Yes," the boy giggled. "If not you then do you think I will call your bodyguard to play with me?"
"Huh?!" Little Zhan's eyes widened while his eyes glistened. "You want to play with me?!"
"Yes." Giggling, the boy grabbed Zhan's little wrist and pulled him towards the swing of the park.
They played various games. That was the first time when Zhan properly befriended someone. They played till dusk until the boy realized that it was getting late and he had to return home.
"We don't know our names. What's your name?" The boy asked, taking in huge puffs of air.
"How about we give names to each other?" Little Zhan giggled, sitting beside his new friend.
"I will call you toothy," the boy said.
"Toothy?" Zhan frowned at his new nickname. "Why is it toothy?"
"Because when you have a toothy smile. And your teeth are big like a bunny." The boy reasoned out, giggling.
"Ah!" Zhan nodded heavily as if he understood something really important. "Then I will call you bestie."
"Bestie?" The boy's brows arched, asking for the reason.
"Because you are my first best friend," Zhan explained.
"We will be best friends forever, right toothy?" The boy smiled, holding Zhan's hand since they were best friends.
"Yes." Zhan smiled. Suddenly Zhan's eyes fell on a symbol of flower on the other boy's wrist. "Bestie, why do you have flower drawn there?"
"Because my mother loved flowers. But now she left me and became a star," the boy replied with a sad pout.
"Bestie, my mom became a star too," Zhan said, poking his friend's arm. "Now you have me. So you aren't alone anymore."
"Yes," the boy giggled. "See you tomorrow, toothy. I've to go home now." The boy waved goodbye to Zhan before disappearing from there.
But after that day, the boy never came to the park. Zhan had never seen him again. Since then he was searching for his 'bestie'.
*End of flashback
"Bestie, do you still remember your toothy?" 21 years old Zhan chuckled sadly upon reminiscing about the first meeting with his bestie. "You saved me 7 years ago. Why didn't you show up back then? Did you already forget you're toothy? But you said you will remember me forever and we are best friends forever."
Suddenly a soft mew pulled Zhan out of his thoughts. Turning his head sideways, he saw his cat looking at him, blinking its eyes cutely, seeking attention from its owner.
"Popcorn..." Zhan smiled as he gently lifted his cat and put it on his lap. "You should thank my bestie. Because of him, you are here with me. Otherwise, both of us would've been playing together in heaven."
As if the cat understood Zhan's words, it nuzzled into his owner's chest. Chuckling, he gently ran his fingers through its soft fur, summoning few purring sounds from the cat. When the cat slowly drifted into sleep, he leaned back, resting his body against the headrest of the bed.
Suddenly his eyes widened as if he had remembered something important. Placing the cat gently beside him, he slowly got off the bed.
"This Hao Xuan! I told him to find the exact university where my bestie might be studying but no! He found some strange university which is ruled by bullies," Zhan rolled his eyes as he fetched his phone.
"Its 3:30 am. Should I phone him now?" Zhan brushed his fingers against his nose as if he was being considerate. "No! I will phone him now. I don't care what he is doing."
As Zhan phoned his friend Hao Xuan, after few second, the call was answered
"Yah! Wei Zhan! Do you think it's time to phone someone?" The person on the phone yelled, making Zhan hold his phone a little away so that he wouldn't become deaf.
"I don't care. Why did you give wrong information about Yunmeng Jiang University?" Zhan asked, annoyed.
"Daddy~ ah~"
"So you are with Ji Yang?" Zhan rolled his eyes, guessing the situation of Hao Xuan.
"Yes, I am! I am not a single bird like you. I have to take care of my beautiful boyfriend. Baby, wait for a second~"
"Mr Hao Xuan, Can you please stop your uncensored activities for a few minutes?"
"Zhan, are you even a man! How can I stop when I am not in a condition to stop?! Now hurry up and shoot." Hao Xuan's voice was coloured with annoyance as if he would kill Zhan at that moment.
"Yeah yeah. My bestie isn't there at that university. I need to change my university again."
"Sweetheart, let daddy take care of his business, hm?" Hao Xuan's words sounded soft enough to meet someone. "Now speak what you want. Tch! You don't even let me enjoy my private time with my bae."
Woah! He speaks so softly with Ji Yang. No doubt that the guy fell for this jerk! Zhan chuckled internally before speaking in his usual cold voice. "I said I need to change university again!"
"Eh?! Big Brother, you are talking about changing university. It's not like changing clothes like you can change whenever and wherever you want."
"Hao Xuan, he isn't there. What else can I do?"
"Zhan, listen to me. You need to find him. I am sure he is at that university. The details which you gave me clearly showed that he isn't a normal person. Yunmeng Jiang University is the only university where you can find him since you already searched for him in all other universities."
"You aren't helpful, you know."
"And you aren't appreciative you know. Now cut the call and let me have some private time, you moron!"
"Yeah yeah. Enjoy your time. Don't make him pregnant, he is still too young for that."
"You! You just stop reading mpreg stories. Gosh! Wattpad has destroyed your common sense."
"Bye~"
Ending the call, Zhan rolled on the bed, laughing like a lunatic.
Gosh! Its so much fun disturbing Hao Xuan in the middle of the night. I am sure Ji Yang is going to give a tough time to him now. Zhan laughed and laughed until his tummy started cramping.
Hao Xuan was Zhan's friend since high school. Hao Xuan was staying with his maternal grandparent's since his parents were divorced and none of them took his custody. Hao Xuan's grandparents made a will where half of their property was Hao Xuan's mother's and the other was Hao Xuan's. So Hao Xuan would inherit half of Hao Company. Since he met Zhan, both of them were working hard so that they can take over the place of CEO as soon as possible.
Stopping his laughter, Zhan let out a deep breath, laying on his bed. "Hao Xuan has Ji Yang to take care of him. When will I have someone to take care of me?" Pouting, Zhan stared at the ceiling. "Even my bestie isn't found anywhere. What should I do now? I don't want to marry that Lan jerk. How can father agree to my marriage with that jerk?" Suddenly Zhan chuckled without humour. "Oh! My bad! How did I forget that in the world of business, profit is the main priority, not love and relationship?"
"It looks like its impossible for me to sleep again." Zhan pouted as he looked at his peacefully sleeping cat. "Look bestie, what you have done to me! Even my cat sleeps better than me. Don't you think you should take the responsibly now?"
Getting off his bed, he strode towards the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of cold water from the refrigerator before emptying it into his stomach.
What a strange life I lead. Zhan chuckled, staring at the cold drawing-room. Everyone lives happily with their families and here I am. My mother left me when I was young and my father was never in good terms with me. So I have to live alone in my own apartment. I too wanna have a warm family. I want someone special to take care of me. Someone who will stay beside me, protect me and support me during my hard times. Sometimes I really feel so tired. I don't even know why I am fighting when I know that the results will be nothing good. Ah! Poor me!
"Wait! Why am I thinking about these useless things?!" Zhan flinched as if he suddenly came back to his senses. "Tsk tsk...Wei Zhan ah Wei Zhan, stop thinking about these useless things. You have no other option but to fight and survive."
Shaking his head, he went to his room. Fetching the laptop, he started to work.
"Xie Yibo, what are you doing? It's only 4 am. You should sleep a little more, dear."
A sweet and caring female voice spoke, grabbing the young man's attention who was typing something on his laptop.
"Ah, jiejie, I cannot sleep." Xie Yibo smiled at his cousin Zhao Ying, who brought a cup of coffee for him and herself. "Moreover, you are also awake."
"Tch...don't compare little one. I am the CEO of Zhao Company. Of course, I have lots of things to take care of." Zhao Ying chuckled, crossing her arms across her chest, looking at her cousin with a 'you cannot beat me' look.
"You are you calling little one, jiejie? I am 22 years old man," Yibo emphasized on '22 years old' to confirm that he wasn't a child.
"I am 26 years old lady," Zhao Ying wiggled her brows, putting her hands on his desk.
"You win, you win." Yibo sighed in defeat and leaned back into his chair.
"Haha~ that's why don't challenge your jiejie." Chuckling, the lady sat on the adjacent chair. "Well, you were smiling like an idiot just a while ago. What was that?"
"Huh? Was I smiling?!" Yibo's brows almost disappeared into his brows.
"Yes, my idiot brother. Now spill the beans. Your jiejie is waiting for the good news." Zhao Ying glanced at her brother while taking a sip from the hot coffee.
"What's with the good news?!" Yibo quirked his brow, putting the cup on the desk. "There is no one."
"Common bro, don't hide anything from your best friend. Now shoot," The lady giggled, sitting comfortably on the rocking chair.
"Ah, jie~" Yibo whined, trying to avoid the topic. Pouting, he blinked cutely.
"Oh God! Someone take care of this big baby." Zhao Ying's melodious laugher filled the room. "Stop your tactics Yibo. Do you want me to find out all by myself?"
"Fine. A cute idiot is transferred to Yunmeng Jiang University. Yesterday I bumped into him and didn't apologise him. His expressions were way too hilarious. I accidentally remembered his expressions and ended up smiling like an idiot." Yibo huffed, rolling his eyes in annoyance.
"Cute idiot?" Zhao Ying sniggered, putting her coffee on the desk. "The great, cold, emotionless Xie Yibo is calling some guy a cute idiot!? Woah! Seems interesting." Tucking the few annoying locks on her forehead, she glanced at Yibo. "It looks like I need to go shopping with Wei Yan Li to buy some dresses for an upcoming wedding."
"Give it a break jiejie." Yibo scoffed, averting his gaze from his cousin to his laptop. "Do you think that that old man will allow me to marry someone of my choice?"
"Manners Yibo." Zhao Ying's voice turned cold which clearly had the authority of a powerful CEO. "He is your father. You cannot address your father as an old man."
"Father?" Yibo laughed as if he heard some good joke. He glanced at his cousin before speaking, "how do you expect me to address that man as my father when he never loved me? All he loves is his business and money."
"Yibo, I understa-"
"You don't understand jiejie!" Yibo yelled while a glassy layer of tears covered his eyes. "If he really loved me then I wouldn't have to stay in your apartment like this. I hate living alone so I have to stay with you in your apartment. If I ever have to choose one between you and that old man, I will always choose you over anyone." He was huffing with rage while his breathing became ragged. Resentment was evident in the pair of bloodshot eyes.
"Shhh...calm down." Zhao Ying immediately hugged his brother, gently caressing his hair, comforting him. "Everything is fine. Don't worry too much about your future. Everything will be alright." Holding his shoulders, she pulled him inches away, looking at his tear-stained face. Cupping his face gently, she smiled, "I am sorry, little one. Your jiejie is here with you, right? Then why are you worrying? If your father forces you then he will have to face CEO Zhao Ying. And I am sure his old, jammed brain cannot compete with mine."
"T-thank you, jiejie." Yibo sniffed, staring at the other's face with big, puppy eyes.
"Stop crying now," Zhao Ying chuckled, wiping the tears from Yibo's cheeks. "If you act this cute, I will have to adopt you so that no one can harm this adorable creature."
"Its all your fault," Yibo pouted, leaning away from his sister. "You are spoiling me too much."
"I am taming a lion," the older laughed softly. "I bet no one knows that this arrogant young man has a soft side too."
"Don't you dare to expose me!" Yibo glared at his sister but it seemed like an angry kitten glaring at its owner.
"I know." Zhao Ying laughed, getting up from her chair. "I have to work as well. By the way, you can chase the cute idiot."
"Aiya Jiejie, you are starting it again?!" Yibo huffed, crossing his arms across his chest. Suddenly his facial expressions turned cold. "Why do I feel that the old man is cooking up something in his mind. He has been behaving well with me since last few weeks."
"Don't think too much, Yibo. Everything will be fine. Just focus on your work and your special course. Don't let your father know about it, hm?" Zhao Ying titled his head, aiming to relax her neck muscles.
"Don't worry about it, jiejie." Yibo smiled.
"Mn." Zhao Ying nodded. "As she walked out of the room."
Cute idiot. Yibo chuckled upon reminiscing Zhan's angry face. It looks like it will be fun messing with him.
Is there anyone who still hates Zhao Li Ying, the heroine of the legend of Fei?
Honestly speaking, she is my fav Chinese actress. I've watched some action scenes of her dramas and became a fan of hers. Aish! She is way too beautiful *makes dreamy eyes*
So...what do you think about this chapter? Is the pace going too speedy? Can you guys understand the emotions?
Recently I've realized that I suck at depicting emotions in stories. 😑
