AMOR VINCIT OMNIA
FIVE THOUSAND YEARS, that was how long Lithor had been alive, and yet he still found the amusement of walking through human markets in the dead of night. It was the night markets that the truly terrible came out to play. It was the year 9 Before Christ, Lithor was without his children; Heda, Ahmose and Cassandra, all of whom decided to stay within the lovely villa rather than join in on his walk with filth as Heda had so kindly put it. Though it could just be because she had just received a new set of beautiful sandals.
His other two children were off doing their own things that night — Ahmose was enjoying the four humans Lithor had gifted him not even three nights before and Cassandra was spending time with her husband Antony from what he had heard as he left the villa.
Rome smelt of shit and was never silent, much to Lithor's displeasure. This was the first time Lithor had brought his small nest of a family into the area Rome occupied. It had been on his list of exploration as soon as news spread of a new kingdom growing and conquering and this was finally the time none of the nest had other priorities to deal with.
Walking along the cobblestone roads lit with pits of fire that illuminated each night, merchants who, as he passed their stalls, held their wares out as they tried to entice him to spend his gold with them. It was little surprise the attention he pulled, seeing he and his protégés pass themselves off as royalty. He had even found himself invited by Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus to attend a Gladiators match the second month following their arrival, though he had to send a missive off with a day human with his great apologies that he and his children could not attend as they were ever so busy. It also cost him a beautifully crafted gold armband to appease the humans.
He believed nothing would be bought this night as he passed stall after stall without anything catching his fancy, up until a stall that was in a dark alcove. The stall was filled with shivering, dirty and nude humans with many of them being women and children, while burly men with spears and swords guarded the sniveling old man who ran the stall. Each human had their emancipated legs shackled together with at least one arm chained to the human besides them, some of the smaller ones were softly sobbing; though as he had superhuman hearing, it was quite clear to him. This stall had Lithor pausing on his walk as his eyes scanned the collected humans. Maybe a gift for his spoiled children was in order.
It seems that Lithor was not the only vampire seeking entertainment among humans this night. The vampire Appius Livus Ocella, his family's Roman host, was walking with the slave trader with his hands locked together behind his back as he checked each of the chained humans already with an impressive bundle following behind him and the seller as their chains clinked with each step they took. Appius was respected in many other worldly circles as he was what was now labeled as an ancient vampire, though Lithor found him to be a bore and a babe in comparison to even his youngest childe. Since his nest came to Rome, Appius had been trying to sew his way into the tightly-knit weave that was his family, as he knew that Lithor was an ancient vampire among the ancient vampires, and that he held much power with vampires and humans alike. Though he did not truly know of Lithor's origin, no one knew the exact age Lithor was but he and those he turned. Only knowing that he was an ancient being that held power beyond belief. Many have tried over the millenniums to be either his lover or his friend, so as to have such an ancient being and his ancient children on their side would be ever the reward for them.
Smirking, Lithor stepped closer to the stall as he cleared his throat, pulling not only the seven-hundred-year-old vampires' attention away from the busty woman they were staring at but that of the slaves, the guards and their masters' attention to him as he entered the stall.
"My Lord Lithor! Come choose any which slave I shall take as a new house slave. I have already chosen the ones to feast upon. Do not hold yourself back from any which one, I can most certainly afford it." Boasted Appius, a man known not to treat his day humans with much care. Lithor had learned in the millenniums of vampirism that having a trusted day human was needed and as he kept them and cared for his their whole lives, one such human had gone on to teach her son her work and the two shared the duty until her dying breath with the son following his mother's footsteps with teaching his daughter and so it went on for six centuries as Lithor kept them on as his beloved and trusted day humans until the last son of the line ended up not siring an offspring.
With a roll of his eyes at the loathsome vampire, Lithor allowed a willful smile cross his face as he strolled further into the stall. His dark eyes scanned over the slave master that straightened his posture and swiped his grubby hand that held only three fingers and a thumb over his thinning auburn hair upon seeing Lithor donned in a rich green silk tunic and gold studded gems that laid in the lobes of his ears. The human smiled up to the vampire showcasing the brown rot that sat in the swamp smelling hole on his face as Lithor scowled as the scent passed through his sensitive nostrils.
"Yes me Prince! Help yeself to any, they be a fresh batch, as I be telling me Lord here. You be having to train them yeself, but they be from Gaul! Born and bred warriors them boys be, and them liddel girls be good in breeding if that's is you fancy. Once they be trained, they be good on orders I tell you, got me self two Gaulish slaves back hom I do!"
Lithor's eyes scanned the group already chosen by Appius without speaking a word to the human, the busty woman being in the group, as were two other men and a small girl barely six winters of age. Out of the four, the one that Lithor found himself gazing at was a boy not yet into manhood, yet his skin had already been inked with tribal tattoos. Across the child's collar bone was what the Angelo-Saxon people used as a symbol of protection, telling Lithor that the boy was not just any Gaul but one of status, as that specific tattoo was typically given to those who are higher-ranking in their society, while the symbol upon his left arm was a Gaulish symbol for water. As Lithor's dark eyes met the dark eyes of the boy he was met with a heated glare and an alarmingly adorable snarled lip.
The boy looked at he and the other two as if we were the dirt beneath his toes rather than the opposite. It was amusing to him, Lithor let a large grin plaster on his face as his fangs clicked into place, allowing him to showcase them to the boy. Whom, upon seeing them, flinched, looking away from both he and Appius before his eyes found Lithor's once again, already with a glare plastered on his face.
This one was going to be trouble.
But Lithor could not find the need to care, all that he could muster himself into doing was to follow the group and Appius back to his villa for some downtime before he was to go to ground for the day.
Who would have believed six years after said meeting, the boy; Godric, as Lithor soon came to know, would became not only his fourth childe, but his eternal lover as well.
