CHAPTER ONE: NOISE COMPLAINT
THE girl flinched at the repetitive sound of something smacking against the glass of her bedroom window, turning over so she was on the other side, she reached out pulling the curtains back just enough to peak out, she frowned at the set of eyes that quickly darted from one spot to another to meet her gaze.
She released the curtains allowing them to hide her from the honey eyed boy once again, her phone started to ring drawing her attention to that as the boy outside her window continued to rap his knuckles against the glass, she pulled her pillow over her head the sound dulling enough that it was tolerable.
She smiled to herself when she heard her phone stop ringing her bliss short-lived as it began again, letting out a huff of air, Ellie sat up in bed grabbing her phone from the dresser.
She pulled back the curtains revealing Stiles sitting on the edge, he gestured down below to the street anxiety picking away at his features as he tried to remain calm. She reached forward, her fingers grazing the edges of the window as she pulled up on the frame a small burst of cold wind slapping her in the face, "what?"
She reached her hand up to her face to rub her eyes, he rolled his glancing down to the jeep parked outside her house, "um, hello? First day of Junior year, and you're going to make us late." she paused in her actions looking up at him with wide eyes, "shit." she didn't waste any time in closing the window and her curtains quickly scrambling to pull together an outfit that didn't look completely incredulous.
She quickly dressed herself tugging her backpack from its spot on her floor as she rushed out of her room and down the stairs to the front door, outside, in his car- jeep- Stiles waved her on in an attempt to get her to hurry up, he hated being late, he hated the consequences of being late.
Slamming the door shut behind her, she ran across her dew slick lawn somehow managing to keep her balance as she approached the jeep.
Stiles impatiently brought his hand down to the steering wheel a honk coming from his beloved vehicle- he'd named it Roscoe- she rolled her eyes pulling the passenger door open, he stared at her his lips set in a stern frown.
Climbing into the car, she gave his shoulder a gentle shove pulling her seatbelt over her chest seconds later, "now we're probably gonna be late." he grumbled, she rolled her eyes once more, "maybe, if you started driving, we would get there faster."
He looked out the window reluctant to give her the satisfaction of knowing she was right, but looking at the watch on his wrist and the time it read changed his mind. He shifted the car into drive and took off down the street rounding the corner up ahead with a sharp left that almost sent Ellie slamming against the door.
She turned to look at him a glare covering any friendly features he was usually able to recognize with little to no trouble. He shrugged his shoulders shifting his gaze back to the road where it belonged.
They drove on in silence their breathing and the sound of the engine being the only audible things, "is Scott already there?" Stiles cast her a small glance his eyes quickly returning to oncoming traffic ahead of them, "yeah, he's got the bike, he's a cool kid now." he put extra emphasis on the word cool making Ellie wonder if the Stilinski boy was slightly jealous of his friend's newfound popularity.
He glanced at her once again furrowing his eyebrows, "stop giving me that look."
She rolled her eyes, "give you what look?" he shrugged his shoulders, "that look you give people when you're analyzing them, it's weird." she feigned fake shock slapping her hand over where her heart was, "ouch." she sighed slumping in her seat, they pulled into the school parking lot within minutes Stiles picking the same spot he always picked before shifting the car into park.
The two of them grabbed their bags from the backseat once he'd removed the keys from the ignition both of them rushing to climb out and locate Scott, Ellie gently patted his shoulder watching as his face settled once he'd taken in the familiar environment, "it's a new year, everything's going to be different." they exchanged a smile before heading into the building the sound of laughter and chatter melding together.
Through the crowd, they could spot Scott hopelessly glancing at Allison every few moments, taking notice of this the two paused at the threshold of the building, "he's never going to get over her, is he?" she looked up to look at Stiles who was still watching his friend, he shook his head, "I don't think so."
His senses kicking into overdrive as he caught his friend's scent, Scott glanced to the door- where both Stiles and Ellie stood- his face lighting up with a soft smile, both parties began walking quietly meeting in the middle, "so, you're late." he teased, Stiles let out a sigh cocking his head to glare at Ellie, "it's because of her." she rolled her eyes giving him an annoyed look, "maybe, if you had shown up earlier and not whined so much in the car, we might have made it on time." she retorted.
Stiles- his ADHD getting the best of him as it usually did- gestured to something behind Scott, "who's the new girl?" this time it was Ellies turn to glare at him, "obviously new, if that didn't seem clear enough." he took a deep breath before opening his eyes and pinching his lips together, "you really make me want to revisit my policy on hitting girls." Ellie smiled knowing he wouldn't ever dare hit her.
"Maybe" she paused gently grabbing the boy's arm, "you should stop venturing into the woods late at night, you'd be less tired then." he pulled his arm away crossing both over his chest.
Scott smiled exchanging a look with Stiles, "and miss out on all the fun? No way."
He adjusted the straps of his backpack looking up towards the ceiling as the bell rang, letting out a sigh he glanced from both of his friends, "see you guys second period." waving to them as he walked off they exchanged a look before heading off to their shared A.P. Psychology class.
"Isn't Ms. Bensee supposed to be out today?" Scott shrugged his shoulders- oblivious as usual- they walked down the hall stopping in front of the door for a brief second before opening it to step inside, only a few students had entered the rest still making their way to the classroom, a man, he stood by the chalkboard a smile on his face as he gestured for them to come inside.
They found seats in the middle of the mess the desks had created averting their gaze from the man- whoever he was- at the front of the room, "do you wanna go to the library for lunch or-?" Scott pressed his lips into a thin line, "I'd have to check with Stiles, you know we can't leave him alone, he'll go batshit crazy." Ellie let out a small laugh.
"Yeah, we don't need him going off to solve a murder case without us." Scott laughed this time the sound being cut off as the bell rang for the second time that morning, the teacher clapped his hands in an attempt to gain the classes attention, when that didn't work he cleared his throat and began tapping his foot against the tile floor.
The classroom dulled to a quiet echo as everyone turned to find the source of the annoying sound, he smiled when he heard no conversations taking place, "Good morning guys, I'm Mr. Kirkman." he paused hoping for a good morning in reply, it was so quiet they could hear the birds outside chirping in protest, he let out a sigh glancing behind him at the chalkboard, "as you can see, Ms. Bensee isn't here today, she left you guys with a packet to do, which I'll be handing out momentarily."
When no one protested, he pulled a vanilla folder out from a drawer glancing through it before he came out from behind the desk- in front of the chalkboard- he handed the first packet to a dirty blonde haired girl followed by the boy behind her, he continued passing the papers out quickly reaching Scott and Ellie.
He offered a smile with the two packets pursing his lips when his smile wasn't returned, he gave off an eerier vibe that she couldn't quite explain, there was something off about him, as if he didn't belong, and in a sense, he didn't.
This was Ms. Bensee's classroom, her class, her curriculum, not his.
He passed them by with no words leaving them to complete their assignment without him hovering over their shoulders, Scott's phone buzzed the boy nervously glancing up to the front of the classroom where the teacher had decided to sit at the desk for the remainder of the class, he pulled the phone out and let his eyes wander over the screen before looking up to meet Ellie's curious eyes.
"Stiles, he tripped on the way into first period in front of everyone." he gestured to the phone, she gave a small nod of the head, "is he okay?" Scott shrugged his shoulders his fingers pressing the keys on his phone, "I'm asking him right now." they waited for a few seconds before the phone vibrated- signaling that Stiles had replied- they both watched the screen as a photo popped up, it was Stiles, he had blood streaming down his nose and in the background they could tell he was in the hallway.
"Ouch." she grimaced at the sight of the blood looking away from the phone, "he said he's going to the nurse right now."
She didn't reply, instead, she pulled her pen from the confines of her backpack giving the packet a once over, "we should probably try to get this done, Stiles isn't going to die, our chance of graduating will though." the boy let out a sigh the girl having reminded him of his bad track record with his grades in previous years, helping each other along the way they managed to get through half of the packet before the bell rang dismissing them to their second period.
"Have a good day, make sure to not give your teachers any trouble." the teacher spoke waving with a smile on his face as they exited the room, Ellie avoided his gaze the man making her feel uncomfortable with his gaze alone.
"Do you think Stiles got the bleeding to stop?" Scott shook his head, "he probably saw it and fainted, I'm willing to bet money on it." she chuckled the two of them slipping into their second period, Coach's eyes were filled with a wild energy- one that told you today they were going to be hearing stories rather than the lesson- trying their best to slip past him they plopped down in their seats.
Stiles stumbled in right before the final bell his face pale and his face showing he was exhausted, "Stilinski, go ahead and find a seat." Coach gestured to the available seats in the room hoping the disappointment of a lacrosse player would move along, as soon as the bell rang, Coach perched himself on the edge of his large wooden desk surveying the students in his room.
"All right, since I'm stuck with you.... rugrats, I guess we might as well jump right into it." he paused glancing at the chalkboard, "taxes, that's what we're starting on this week." he looked around the classroom waiting for someone to say something, "no snide comments? We're already off to a great start." he smiled to himself before opening his mouth to begin, "Coach, none of us want to hear a story." he frowned at Ellie as she leaned her head into her hand.
"Simmons, no one asked for your opinion, I'll be having you run extra laps during class today." she let out a sigh allowing her head to collapse against both her arms on the desk, "now, before I was so rudely interrupted.." he trailed off scanning all of the faces in the classroom before he proceeded on with a story none of them wanted to listen to.
