Chapter 11
Kai blinked a couple of times and wiped a lone tear that fell from his eye. "So, yeah. That's a little about my past."
Caylynn didn't know what to say but finally managed to force out some words. "That still doesn't answer how you ended up in Dragonwood but to be honest your parents sound like assholes. Thank you for sharing that part of your life with me, Kai." She smiled a little and stared at the floor, willing the tears that invaded her vision to go away.
"Well, you shared yours, so it was time I shared mine." Kai smiled briefly but it fell, replaced with anger. "I had started my lessons not long after leaving home. It wasn't that hard, but my favourite skill is the Chains of Fire."
Caylynn nodded and looked towards him. "How did you find out about Dragonwood?"
"Right, I forgot to talk about that, didn't I? That day I left my parents, Lady Skylar saw me and took me in. She had taken care of me for over a year and a half while I learnt about my skills and such. I was eighteen and a half when I decided to leave. Lady Skylar had told me all about Dragonwood, the dragons, and the land of fire. It took me hours to get there but I made it. I built my home myself and lived in it. The dragons were very fond of me," Kai explained with a big smile on his face. "Haven't heard from my family since but they can go burn in the deepest pits of hell for all I care."
Caylynn rested her elbow on her knee and laid her head on her hand. "Lady Skylar is a wonderful woman. She helped me with my lessons too before Lady Melony took over. I've always heard about Dragonwood and dreamed about seeing it but I never had an excuse to until now." She winked and smiled.
Kai felt like his heart had been stomped on all over again. He wasn't hurt but he just had never brought a girl over to his place before. Quite frankly he had never been in love before. He had barely seen or spoken to any woman near his age before this mission. "Sure. If we make it past this mission, I'll give you a grand tour. For now, you will need to settle on my stories."
Caylynn nodded and sighed. She would have to wait till then. Her mind kept flashing back to Peter and what he had told her then to what Kai had just informed her. "The bastard lied to me."
Kai looked at her, his eyebrows pulled together. "Huh? Who?"
"Peter," Caylynn replied. "I'm going to make him pay. Oh, he is going to have thorns in a very unpleasant spot tomorrow."
"Calm down, girlie. We can't expose ourselves, remember? You need to pretend to be like any other human and go along with his games even if you know he is lying. No thorns and definitely don't use your powers," Kai warned, glaring at her a little.
"Thorns lodged in his crotch would have been a lovely gift," Caylynn mumbled, crossing her arms.
"Caylynn," Kai warned.
"Fine," Caylynn said and stood up. "I won't do it." She would have to behave for now.
It was already Monday, another work week and Caylynn was not looking forward to it. She was fuming and everything Kai had told her the day before had run circles in her mind. How could she face Peter knowing this information? With a final sigh she had walked out the door.

Kai had sighed for the fifteenth time that morning as he stood there in the sun. It was such a slow day. There were no deliveries that morning and he had to listen to Maxwell's constant blabbering, and he was not interested at all. Kai had already said 'wow that is interesting' for the billionth and one time that morning and he was ready to flame the man the second he was given permission.
His eyed were glued to his bosses room. He could bet that the others were doing more work than he was right now. Maxwell was still on about his brother's marvelous threesome with his wife and best friend and did not stop talking. Kai loved to talk, he really did, but not to this extent. His mind wondered back to when he had his lessons and how he learnt all different skills and how to control his fire. Those were the best years of his life.
He remembered the first time he summoned the chains of fire. It had been his best achievement yet and he was so proud of himself. Weeks of learning, months of practice had finally paid off and now his biggest challenge yet. Saving the humans. He didn't mind the elemental angels all that much. They were quite okay. Caylynn was nothing like they had described her at all.
