Chapter 4

A/N: Please note there might be a small amount of gore or blood towards the end of this chapter!

The moon shone as bright as ever, overshadowing the stars in the night sky. A young woman was in the kitchen cooking dinner for herself and her husband. They had both been busy working and spreading good deeds. Their house wasn't anything fancy but perfect for the both of them. It was a small two-bedroom cottage. The outside didn't look like much, but the inside was decorated beautifully. Fake plants were placed elegantly around the house, invading corners, and standing next to the sofas and furniture. A few small photo frames decorated the living room and the walls leading upstairs.

Once the food was ready, the woman put it on two plates and set them on the table. One in front of her husband and the other in front of an empty seat across from him. As she was about to sit down, a loud explosion went off. Her eyes went wide, and she ran into the living room, pulled the curtain aside and tried to find the source, but had no luck.

Her heart raced, and she began to panic as a scream could be heard throughout the silent night. It was a scream of agony. A loud laugh soon replaced it. The woman didn't recognise the man's laugh.

"Angels of Jophiel, neighbouring tribes, we need your assistance. The central lands are being attacked. Come help us," Queen Seraphim pleaded through the angel link.

The woman and her husband looked at each other. She took his hand and squeezed it. "Let's do this."

"Whatever happens, I love you, Angelique," the man said and kissed her forehead. "Let's go."

Angelique and her husband walked out of the house while holding hands. Once they were outside, they let go. She couldn't believe what she saw in the distance. Black clouds of smoke ran into the air, another loud scream filled her ears. Angelique felt like her heart was being ripped out of her chest. She barely used her powers, but she knew she had to for this.

Her wings moved and so did her husband until they were both in the air. They made their way to the area and landed behind a large bush observing the scene. Hundreds, if not thousands of large red beings were attacking the tiny angels. Three angels were attacking one of them. Angelique knew who they were. She remembered the folklore about those people. They were the demons.

She remembered what her mother had told her. The stories that had been passed on from generation to generation. Every angel and demon used to live in perfect harmony as one on one land. Those days were long gone when the Lord above caught one of the demons killing an angel. The lands were separated into tribes and the human realm portal stayed in Jophiel.

Angelique ran out from behind the bushes, a golden sword appeared in her left hand. She remembered the days she used to take lessons in handling swords. It made her feel free and invincible. She knew what she had to do, and she had to do it fast. She saw one of the demons ripping one of the angel's arms off one by one. A loud scream of agony filled the air. Blood dripped down to the ground. He then placed his hand on her head, covering her face completely then twisted until her head came cleanly off.

Blood pooled the grass and Angelique saw red. She ran as fast as her legs could take her and came up behind him. She jumped up and jammed her sword into the back of his neck, impaling him cleanly. He instantly dropped to the ground, and she took her sword back out of him.

"That'll teach you," she said with a smile.

She turned around and to her horror came eye level with a red chest. She looked up to see a demon. He smiled widely and she immediately knew she was in trouble. Her heart sank and her hands felt stiff like stones. Every time she tried to lift her sword she failed.

The demon laughed and grabbed her by the shoulder. He lifted her up into the air. She swung her arms about trying to hit him but failed. Her powers somehow decided to not work. He laughed and threw her onto the ground. Pain shot from everywhere like hot coals sinking into her skin. Something was weighing her down and it almost crushed her. Her life flashed before her eyes.

Just when she thought she could try and outsmart the demon, his hand grabbed her shoulder, burying her into the grass. She struggled and squirmed trying to break free to no avail. All the other angels were busy trying to defeat the demons, some lay motionless on the ground.

Pain. She could feel a burning pain in her back. It only grew as it went lower, and she started to cry and scream in pain.

The demon laughed. "You do-gooders ought to pay."

In one motion he ripped her wings off and threw them onto the ground next to her. Her screams filled the air. The world around her started to dance and darken until she fell into a place of darkness.

Days after the war ended, the angels of Jophiel were successful in turning the demons away. They had lost hundreds if not thousands of their own. The angels of Donovan had come down to assist as much as they could. Healer angels worked on Angelique in hopes she would wake up. They were worried about her life without wings after she woke up, but they knew they would have to help out as much as they could.

A week after the war, Angelique finally woke up. She didn't know where she was, and she panicked until she saw Queen Seraphim.
