Mamma Mia
"Who are you?" I asked. "How did you find me?" He stepped forward, and I took a step back to match him. He sighed.
"My name is Tony Stark," he said. "Maybe you've heard of me?" I shook my head. "You really don't know who I am." It wasn't a question. "Well, I'm a billionaire, one of the Avengers-"
"Avengers?" I asked, finally speaking again. "You're one of them?" He nodded. "Which one?"
"Iron Man." I sighed. I envied Iron Man. I really didn't want to envy this guy.
"You never answered my other question." He looked at me.
"Which was . . . " I rolled my eyes.
"How did you find me?" He groaned.
"I'm really not used to people not knowing who I am." I rolled my eyes again. This guy really was full of himself, wasn't he? "I pretty much have access to everything, electronically." I smirked.
"I doubt you can access everything." He frowned.
"No, I'm not kidding. I have a system that can get me access to whatever I want."
"Is that how you became a billionaire?" He had no response.
"Well, you've got a quick wit, don't you?" I nodded.
"Especially around bullies."
"And I'm a bully?"
"You're a billionaire. Same thing." He scoffed.
"Not in the slightest." I rolled my eyes for, what, the millionth time?
"Please. You have all this money and use it to save the world, yet you're completely oblivious to the people in your own neighborhood who need your help, and if you do know they're there, you just don't care." He frowned.
"That's oddly specific." He stepped forward, and I took another step back. "What happened to you that made you so cynical?" I glared at him.
"I don't think we have enough time for me to tell you my entire life story." He frowned.
"Kid, I'm not being funny anymore! I'm trying to say I wanna help you!" He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Why do teenagers have to be so difficult?" I frowned.
"I'm trying to say I've had a pretty shitty life and this is the only way I've ever been able to keep from becoming one of those kids who just learns to live with the bullies, and the jerks, and all the people who say you aren't good enough!" A tear slipped down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away. The scowl on Tony's face disappeared as he sighed.
"Look, kid. I know you have powers." I shrugged.
"Yeah, I figured."
"Could you, like, stop being a smart-aleck for just a second? I'm trying to say I can help."
"You said that already." He sighed.
"Yeah, I know. Just . . . come with me, we'll see what you can do, and maybe, just maybe . . . we'll get you a real home." I stared at him, no longer angry for whatever reason.
"Wait . . . what?" He nodded.
"You heard me."
"Well, duh. I've got 20/20 hearing (I just had to). I just don't know what you meant." He sighed.
"Just come with me." I shook my head.
"I may've been raised by a drunk who didn't care about anything concerning us, but if anything, that taught me even more not to just leave with random people." He groaned.
"Mamma mia," he muttered. I smirked.
"Here I go again." He looked up at me.
"What?"
"My my, how can I resist you?" He paused, then sighed.
"Kid, I want you to stay here, okay?" I shrugged.
"I have a feeling you could find me no matter where I go." He paused.
"That's true, but this makes it easier. Please?" I shrugged.
"I spend most of my time here anyway, just ask Jacob." He smiled.
"Okay, if I can prove you can trust me, will you come with me?" I shrugged.
"Sure."
"I will be right back." He ran out, and I just stood there for a second, not entirely sure what just happened. I was still standing there when Jacob walked in.
"Hey," he said. I looked up at him.
"You let him in didn't you?" He nodded. "Why?" He sighed.
"I know you don't know much about him, but I do. I know he can help you if you'd just give 'im the chance." I sighed and walked over to the treadmill.
"Did you upgrade it?" In his spare time, Jacob was also an engineer. It's what he had wanted to do with his life, but he couldn't afford to go to school. He nodded.
"It will now go up to two thousand miles an hour, and you don't even want to know how much it cost to get the parts to upgrade this thing." I looked at him.
"How did you even get that much money?" He shrugged.
"I took out a loan . . . or three." I frowned.
"You didn't have to do that." He smiled.
"Yes, I did. You're like a little sister to me. I wanna help you as much as I can, and if I can't tell how fast you're going, I won't be able to. That's one reason . . ." He stopped.
"What?"
"I think you should go with him." I swear my jaw dropped.
"You do?" He nodded.
"He can help you more than I can, and I don't like the idea of you living on the streets until you can get a decent job." I scoffed.
"I don't live on the streets, I-"
"No, you just live in an abandoned apartment. It's the same thing, Chris!" He sighed. "Just get to running, will ya'?" He walked out, and I sighed.
"Seems to be the only thing I'm good at."
I'm sorry, but I just had to make at least one reference with a title like Mamma Mia.
