The Glitch
"___... ___." Someone pokes your side making you blink back and look over. "We're ready to begin the extraction." The man informs you. Exhaling a puff of smoke, you put out your cigarette, you follow the scientist back into the lab, looking through the protective glass at the strapped super.
"Extraction test number 22, subject named Perona, Super name; The Ghost. Commence test in 5, 4, 3...." You nod to the extraction team who inject the pink haired woman with two pairs of needles. "One." You breathe before the blood transfusion begins. The woman cries out in pain as all the subjects before her did, and still, it churned your stomach.
"Vitals are failing." One of the scientists speak up. You frown, watching the screens start to go red as the test begins to fail and the super's screams swiftly fade.
"Subject is dead..." Another whispers. You close your eyes with a frown.
"Doctor Caesar... You said the chances of that happening was under twenty percent." You turn to him with a cold look.
"Sh-She was a weak subject! It'll work with the next one!" He gasps. You shift and place a hand on one of the monitors, causing all the screens to fall into static.
"No. I told you another failure and I will demote you." You state. "Reese, you're now in charge. I want a full report on how you plan to fix this problem. Until you can guarantee absolute success, no more tests." You point at another scientist before going out.
"Y-You cant demote me! It was my idea!" Caesar hastily follows you out.
"I just did. If you have a problem with it, then you're free to leave." You deadpan not even looking at him as you head toward one of the elevators.
"You brat! Have you forgotten that I was your teacher!?" He growls.
"All students surpass their teachers." You recall before stepping in the elevator and turning to face him. "Not that I had to do much to surpass you that is." You add before the doors close and you're sent to the ground floor.
You step off with a heavy sigh, rubbing your cheek as you calculate what went wrong this time. "Ms.___." Another voice makes you look up as Lucci comes up.
"Lucci, did something come up?" You ask him.
"The Gate Guards think that the wall has been compromised." He informs you. Yeah, apparently you've always been speaking with him and not Hattori. Hey, no one said you were a genius on all fronts, and in away Hattori speaking made more sense to you than it being a constant ventriloquism act.
"Reports?" You prompt, holding out your hands for them. He hands you the file and you scan over them. "Seems like RedDemon has acquired two more friends to help him knock on the wall... Since when do Super's want to come onto this is side...." You mutter. "Alright, send word to the guards there, boost the forcefield power by twenty percent, and I want extra guards at the gate. My shock fence isn't ready to take out those troublesome flies yet." You hand the file back to him.
"Very well, how was today's test?" He asks.
"... Expect Caesar to make a scene today. I'm going now, good luck." You murmur and go past. Lucci watches you go and frowns lightly.
"Kaku, make sure our head of research and security doesn't go to jail again." He sighs.
"On it." The man breathes before following after you.
You sit at the bar, giving the bartender a nod before looking down at the counter in silence. You picked a lively place as usual, rowdy norms conversing loudly all around.
Once you start downing drinks, company finds you. "Hey girl, you trying to drink your pain away? I can make you feel really good tonight." A man purrs.
"I highly doubt that. Maybe for like two seconds, if you last that long." You hum focusing on your drinks. On your other side, his friend chuckles.
"Yeah, he is quick to the draw. I can make you feel better longer." He rumbles. You look between them and place a hand on one of their cheeks.
"No. You can't." You state before glitching their heads into the counter and finishing your drink as their muffled cries sound, arms flailing. "Of course the cabinet is hollow..." You mutter.
"What the hell... Hey Super! Your kind isn't welcome here." A drunkard calls attention to you. You stop and turn to him.
"I'm no super, I just want to drink in peace. But now I'm annoyed." You get up, fingers twitching.
"You think ya can come in here and do as ya please dontcha?" He jabs your chest.
"Heh... No sweetheart, I know." You breathe before glitching through him. He staggers and you push him over. "Drunkard."
"Now you've done it!" Another roars lunging at you. Turning about swiftly, your fist connects with his jaw.
"Come on then! Lets fight!" You shout at the crowd.
The only time you could feel a flicker of anything is when you fought, knuckle to knuckle. But, no matter how many people it was or how many hits you took, it still didn't feel like enough.
The last drunkard receives a kick in the head and you blink at Kaku. "So you're my babysitter tonight?" You comment. He offers a small nod. "Lets bail, I already left a check for damages." You say before leading him out.
"___... You can't keep doing this... It's bad for the Guard's image." He tells you, walking beside you as you take a bottle from your coat. "... Did you steal that?"
"Part of the damages pay." You respond before taking a swig. "Want some?"
"N-No thank you... But did you hear me?" He frowns.
"Don't talk to me about the Guard's image. You'd all still look like a joke if I hadn't came here two years ago.... Now the Supers are concerned about us. And once Punk and I finish the Pacifistas, they'll fear us." You breathe.
"You're right but... Aren't you concerned this will catch up to you?" He inquires.
"I'm aware Kaku. I just don't care. Either way I plan to reach my goal..." You take down the bottle and shiver. "Good liquor." You drop your bottle into garbage can and Kaku sweatdrops.
"That was a mailbox ma'am.."
"Was it... Oops..." You glance back over your shoulder and stagger a bit. "I think the alcohol is finally kicking in!" You smirk, putting an arm around his neck. "It's hard getting drunk when you're a super, am I right?"
"I-I don't drink..." He tells you, keeping a hand on your side.
"That's because you can feel still... That'll change Lil' Giraffe." You poke his long rectangular nose.
"I'm concerned... Have you been seeing your therapist?" He questions .
"Not since I glitched her into a wall! Ya know something, I kinda like mah powers... I can shut people up by putting their heads in things. And I can mess up computers!" You snicker drunkenly. "But I don't feel real anymore... Ya know? Can you see?" You mush your own face at him.
Kaku frowns and puts a hand on your head. "You're still an amazing person ___... You're real."
"I'm not a person anymore, I'm a glitch now! Like all Supers I just exist to fuck everything up." You spread out your arms, turning your head up to the sky. "Just a glitch to the world!" Your body flickers and becomes static.
"___... Let's just get you home..." He touches your shoulder when you materialize again.
"Okay!" You chime before letting him pull you along to your apartment.
You search yourself and look around the empty hall before going to the door across from yours and knocking. Your silver haired neighbor opens his door. "Lost your keys again?" He guesses.
"Nice to see you too Smoker, can I crash on your couch?" You ask.
"You don't seem to sleep though." He deadpans. You offer a toothy smile. "You left your keys in your office." He holds up your keys.
"Huh... Can I still crash here?" You look back at him.
"Alright, there are reports for you on the table. I'll make you a pot of coffee." He says going to his kitchen. You follow him in with a slight stagger, sitting at his table and starting over reports. "You should get a roommate ___, or move in. Doesn't make sense to have an apartment you don't stay in."
"We could share apartments, more room, and I'll never lose my keys again because you'll have them." You muse thoughtfully.
"Alright but your weapons stay in that one." He sighs bringing you a cup and sitting down. "I heard about the test."
"Two years and I haven't found a way to reverse the mutations. And seastone isn't a permanent solution." You frown as you sober up.
"You should try to sleep on it." He tells you.
"No, need to do my own report tonight. Tomorrow Im going to see his grave and don't want to work." You respond. Smoker frowns as you focus on the papers with a frown. He has grown accustom to you coming in drunk, then working, never sleeping. It was sad to watch but he didn't know what else to do besides offer you company.
"Alright... Well, I'm going to bed, see you in the morning."
"Sleep well Smoker..."
