Chapter 6: The Battle Of Yavin
The moment she landed on the moon relief flooded her, but she knew another battle awaited her. She exited her ship as Luna followed her. She walked into the base. "You're late, Oracle," came a familiar voice.
"I got caught up in old habits," she replied, turning around to see Bail. "How are you holding up?"
"I still haven't had the time to process it," he said.
"I know what you mean," she replied. Years ago she had lost her own homeworld. "How many managed to escape?"
"A lot, thanks to your warning, Master Kennet."
She smiled. "I was just doing my job, Bail."
"I'm sorry to hear about Master Kenobi."
"I'm sorry I couldn't save your planet."
"Your warning saved people, Grim. Let's just make sure no other planets suffer the same fate."
She nodded. "Of course, I should probably get to the briefing, I'm late as it is."
"Thank you for saving my daughter."
She smiled at him, and then left for the briefing.
Talking suddenly stopped when she entered the room. "Sorry, I'm late," she said.
"Oracle, take a seat," she was told.
She did so, not wasting any time.
"As I was saying: A small one-man fighter should be able to penetrate the outer defense."
"Pardon me for asking, sir, but what good are snub fighters going to be against that?"
"Well, the Empire doesn't consider a small, one-man fighter to be any threat or they'd have a tighter defense. An analysis of the plans provided by Princess Leia has demonstrated a weakness in the battle station. The approach will not be easy."
As he spoke a visual of the plans appeared on the screen behind him. "You're required to maneuver straight down this trench and skim the surface to this point. The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. A precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the station. Only a precise hit will set up a chain reaction. The shaft is ray-shielded, so you'll have to use proton torpedoes."
Which would be difficult - near impossible to do for any ordinary person. So it was a good thing that the Rebellion had two Jedi in the room.
"Then man your ships, and may the Force be with you."
As everyone left Grim walked over to him. "Sir, I know I'm not a pilot for this Rebellion and that my job has been to give information, however may I request to assist in this battle? I'm quite a good pilot, and fought in plenty of aerial battles in The Clone Wars."
"If you can find a suit and a ship, you're in, Oracle."
"Thank you, sir."
Grim left to change into a pilot outfit. She clipped both her own and Obi-Wan's lightsaber to her belt. She wouldn't need them while in space, but she kept her lightsaber with her at all times, she would do the same with Obi-Wan's until she knew what to do with it.
She made her way to the hangar, catching up to Luke. "Are you up for this?" She asked him.
"It'll be like shooting a womp rat back home," he replied.
She grinned. "That's the spirit, Skywalker."
They ran into Han who was in the process of collecting his reward.
"So, you got your reward and you're just leaving, then?" Luke asked him.
"That's right. Yeah. I got some old debts I gotta pay off with this stuff. Even if I didn't you don't think I'd be fool enough to stick around here, do ya?"
Grim crossed her arms, "it wouldn't be foolish to stick around this Rebellion, and I think you'll end up finding that out."
"You sure are confident of a lot of things, Lady Purple," he said. "This mission you and the rest of these rebels are on is suicide."
"Maybe, but maybe not. I've been on a lot missions in my life, Solo, including some quite frankly, suicidal ones, but I have faith. This Rebellion is going to win, and it could use your help."
He shook his head. "Not happening." He turned to Luke. "Hey kid, why don't you join Chewie and I? You're pretty good in a fight, we could use ya."
"Come on. Grim's right, why don't you take a look around? You know what's about to happen, what they're up against. They could use a good pilot like you. You're turning your back on them."
"What good's a reward if you ain't around to use it?" He retorted. "Attacking that battle station isn't my idea of courage, it's more like suicide."
"All right, well take care of yourself Han," said Luke. "I guess that's what you're best at isn't it?" With those words he started to walk away.
"Hey Luke," Han started. He paused and turned around. "May the Force be with you."
"You'll be back," she told him. "I just know it, but in the meantime, may the Force be with you." She left as well.
She caught up with Luke and continued to walk with him. Leia walked over to them. "What's wrong?" She asked Luke.
"Oh it's Han. I really thought he'd change his mind," he replied.
"He's got to follow his own path. No one can choose it for him," Leia told him.
"She's right, besides I have a feeling he'll come around," she promised him.
"I only wish Ben were here."
She gave him a sad smile. "I know what you mean, I do as well."
Leia left after giving Luke a comforting smile of understanding.
Grim went to her own ship. She wasn't used to the X-Wing model, but she was a fast learner, and had the Force on her side. She let her hands settle into position as Luna was loaded into her ship. She slipped on the gloves and helmet. The hatch closed, and it was off to battle.
As she left the moon behind she connected with the Force. Most of the battles she had fought in since joining the Rebellion had been on the ground. When it came to space, she wasn't in practice. Still, there was a part of her that remembered the sensations and the movement, and all that came with it. This part of her knew what to do, and the Force would guide her with the rest.
They flew closer to the Death Star, and she was calm.
"All wings report in," said Red Leader.
"Red Ten standing by."
"Red Seven standing by."
"Red Three standing by."
"Red Six standing by."
"Red Nine standing by."
"Red Two standing by."
"Red Eleven standing by."
"Red Five standing by." - She recognized that voice as Luke's.
"Oracle standing by," said Grim.
"Lock S-foils into attack position," instructed Red Leader.
They all did so. "We're passing through the magnetic field. Hold tight. Switch your deflectors on. Double front."
The closer they got to the Death Star, the bigger it was revealed to be. "Look at the size of that thing!"
"Cut the chatter, Red Two. Accelerate to attack speed."
As Grim did so she couldn't help but smile. "This is where the fun begins."
"Red Leader, this is Gold Leader."
"I copy, Gold Leader."
"We're starting for the target shaft, now."
"We're in position. I'm going to cut across the axis and try to draw their fire."
With that, the battle truly began.
As they began to make their attack Grim sunk into the Force, allowing it to guide her. She had no intention of making the winning shot. Luke had to do so. Her goal here was to save as many people as she could from the Empire, and when Vader joined in, she would do her best to keep him distracted.
She stayed close to Luke. In the Force he felt like the suns from his home. Warm and bright, and she could feel, ever faintly, the beacon of light that belonged to her Master. In the Force he was with them both. She smiled warmly at the thought.
"This is Red Five, I'm going in," said Luke. He dived closer to the surface of the Death Star and began to fire, taking out one of the guns.
"Luke, pull up!" Biggs and Grim shouted at the same time.
He did so.
"Are you alright?" Biggs asked.
"A little cooked, but I'm okay."
The fight continued. The Force guided her, she barely had to think. She breathed and the Force was her air. It was all around her, it flowed through her, and it was her. She was the Force and the Force was her, she was one with it.
She had struggled to reach this connection with the Force since Order 66, the loss of an entire planet should have made it even worse, and yet, she had never been as connected as she was now. She felt all of the pilots, Luke the brightest of all. She felt Obi-Wan, although gone, now forever a part of the Force. He was guiding Luke with his words, but she knew, and could feel in her heart, he was guiding her as well, because he was now the Force.
"Squad leaders, we've picked up a new group of signals. Enemy fighters coming your way."
"My scope's negative, I don't see anything," said Luke.
"Pick up your visual scanning."
"Here they come!"
"This is Oracle, I'll handle the fighters," decided Grim.
She backed up quickly, and found herself behind the TIE-Fighters. She began to focus her fire on the enemy. She shot down two of them, but they began to dodge her fire, and split away to pick at her friends. She was one woman, and she couldn't take them all down if they were apart.
She gritted her teeth and mentally cursed herself. She saw a fighter going after Luke and focused on it, instead. She shot it down before it could hit him. "Are you all right, Luke?"
"I'm all good, thanks Grim."
She smiled, but there was a still battle to be won.
"Red Leader, this is Gold Leader, we're starting our attack run."
"I copy, Gold Leader."
Then, she couldn't feel the Force as well. There was an empty spot inside of it, and she knew the cause. She clenched her jaw. She broke away from the others. Away from her squadron, and began to head towards the emptiness where there should have been light.
Once upon a time there was one. A dim star had once filled the space that the void now existed.
"Oracle, what are you doing?" Red Leader's voice called.
"Don't worry about me, worry about the rest of the squad," she replied. "Vader's just joined this fight and I'm going after him."
"Don't be foolish, Oracle."
"I'm being far from foolish. I'm going to draw his fire away from everyone else."
"That's suicide."
"If it is, then so be it."
"Grim, don't let your anger blind you." Obi-Wan's voice echoed.
Her hands tightened around the controls. "I'm not." She wasn't sure if the words would reach him. He was dead, and so their bond had died. However, at the same time, he was now with the Force.
She sped to Vader's location, as much speed as her fighter would allow her. His fighter was easy to spot and identify. He flew a modified one and the wings were curved. At either side flew two regular TIE-Fighters.
She began to fire at them, aiming at the Sith Lord. The regular fighters turned around and began to shoot back at her, she spun her ship around as she dodged their fire. "C'mon," she muttered.
Vader had chosen to engage with Gold Squadron rather than with her. She began to fly after him, but his two protecting pilots were holding her off. She flew lower. She sped ahead of them, towards Vader. The other two fighters were on her tail. "Damnit."
She dodged their fire while she tried to shoot at Vader. She wasn't even attempting to kill him. She wasn't trying to shoot him out of the sky. She needed him distracted. Instead she had only gotten two fighters on her tail.
Due to this, Gold Squadron was left at his mercy. His mercy, that thus far, he had shown none of. The Rebels were easy pickings for the Sith Lord, and he destroyed the entire squad. Once he had, then he turned his attention onto her.
She turned around and flew away from the Death Star, but close enough to assist the remaining Rebels. Vader chased after her, as she knew he would. He had killed both Obi-Wan, and as far as he was aware, Ahsoka as well, to all his knowledge, Grim was the last remaining link to the past he held as Anakin Skywalker. It was time for her to fall as well.
It was time for Red Squadron to make their run at the Death Star. She worked to keep Vader away from them. Her focus was on him and him alone. Her focus was on keeping his focus on her. She paid no attention to the voices through the comm, she paid attention only to the Force. The Force would guide her.
Vader, however, began to catch onto her tactics. He stopped firing at her, and headed back to destroy her fellow Rebels, his protectors following suit. "Shit," said Grim. "Watch out, boys. Darth is heading your way."
"Copy, Oracle. You heard her, boys, keep your eyes peeled for enemy fighters," said Red Leader.
"I don't see any- Wait, coming in at point-three-five," said Luke.
"I see them."
"I'm in range. Target coming up."
"Just hold them off for a few seconds."
"Almost there."
Vader took out one of the pilots.
Grim cursed. She had been attempting to follow them, but hadn't been able to even land a hit.
"Let her loose. They're right behind me."
"Almost there."
"I can't hold them!."
Another pilot gone.
Torpedoes were launched. "It's away!" There was a small explosion.
"It's a hit!"
"Negative. Negative. It didn't go in. It just impacted on the surface."
"Red Leader, we're right above you. Turn to point-oh-five. We'll cover for you," said Luke.
"Stay there. I just lost my starboard engine. Get set up for your attack run."
Vader took down Red Leader.
"Looks like it's down to us," said Grim.
"Biggs, Wedge, Grim, let's close it up. We're going in full throttle. That ought to keep those fighters off our back," said Luke.
"Right with you, boss," said Wedge.
"Luke, at that speed will you be able to pull out in time?" Asked Biggs, concerned.
"It'll be just like Beggers Canyon back home," he replied. WIth that he dived down.
"We'll stay back far enough to cover you," said Biggs.
"My scope shows the tower, but I can't see the exhaust port," said Wedge. "Are you sure the computer can hit it?"
"It can't," said Grim. "But we can still do this, the Force is with us."
One of the towers began to fire at them as they approached. "Watch yourself. Increase speed, full throttle," said Luke.
"What about that tower?"
"You worry about those fighters. I'll worry about the tower."
They continued on their path. "Fighters coming in, point-three," said Wedge. Then - "I'm hit! I can't stay with you."
"Get clear, Wedge. You can't do any more good back there."
"Sorry."
"Hurry Luke, they're coming in much faster this time, we can't hold them," said Biggs.
They started to gang up on them.
"Hurry up Luke! Quick!" He cried. "Quick!"
He got shot down by Vader before Grim could do anything to help him. "No." She took a deep breath, she may not have been able to save anyone this time around, but she had done what she could. "Luke, I'm going to back out," she told him. "I'm going to try and get behind these fighters, you've got this."
Before he could reply she already moved to do so. Flying behind Vader, keeping her focus on him.
She knew Luke was relying on his targeting computer, and she knew the computer wouldn't be able to make the shot. "Use the Force, Luke," she told him.
She swore she heard Obi-Wan as well. "Let go," he was saying.
"He's right, let go," said Grim. "Luke, you have to trust us."
Obi-Wan had also been saying to trust them at the same time she was.
Although he was dead, and although they had been apart for sixteen years, they were still connected in a way. She smiled.
"Luke, you switched off your targeting computer. What's wrong?" Asked Base One.
"Nothing. I'm all right."
Grim shot at Vader, but it barely missed. Vader shot at Luke, but hit Artoo instead.
"I lost Artoo."
Grim tried again to shoot at Vader, but couldn't hit him or the other fighters with him.
"Move out of the way, Lady Purple, I got this," Han's voice came through the comms.
"I knew you'd be back, Solo," she replied as she followed his instructions.
Han hit one of the fighters, taking Vader by surprise. The other one rammed their ship into Vader's, sending him spinning away. The other fighter hit the wall of the trench and exploded.
"You're all clear, kid. Now let's blow this thing and go home," Han told Luke.
Luke made the shot. They flew away from the Death Star as it went in. As they headed back to base, it exploded behind them.
"Great shot, kid! That was one in a million!
"You did an excellent job, Luke," agreed Grim. "The Force is strong with you."
When they arrived at the base Luke was greeted with applause as a hero. She ran to him and joined the celebration, joining in on the hug between Luke, Leia, and Han.
Then Artoo was brought down, Vader's shot had really damaged him. "Oh no," said Luke.
"Oh my. Artoo, can you hear me?" Threepio asked him. "Say something." He turned to one of the rebels that were lowering him. "You can repair him, can't you?"
"We'll get to work on him right away."
"You must repair him."
Grim placed a hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry, Threepio, he's been in a lot uglier situations and he's still around. He'll be fine."
"She's right, he'll be alright," Luke told him.
They joined Han, Leia, and Chewbacca, and left the hangar behind smiling. The Death Star was gone.
