Three years she'd been gone. Three years he'd felt empty inside. Toya somehow knew Tira was alive but it felt as if her light had dimmed, like a candle about to sputter out. Everyday it felt like she was hanging on a very precarious ledge and she could drift away at any moment. It made him feel sick to his stomach. It reminded him a little of a time when they were seven when she'd spent a week in a drug induced coma. He'd spent three years training to get stronger and trying to figure out where Tira had been shipped off to.
During the three years he'd been without Tira, he spent every free moment scouring every inch of the house in search of a clue as to where their father had sent her. He even snuck into their father's study; he picked the lock on his desk drawer but there was nothing that had given him a clue. There weren't any bills or invoices of where he was sending payments to, no reports or updates. It had to be at his office, at his agency. There was no other place for him to look. He had to break into his father's agency to find Tira's whereabouts.
Early Saturday morning, before the sun had risen, Toya made his way to his father's agency to get an idea of how heavy security was. He hadn't been to his father's agency since he and Tira were children and at the time he didn't expect to need to know where every security camera was, for future reference. By the time he arrived it was almost eight in the morning.
He walked a wide perimeter around the building checking for cameras and possible high-risk areas where he could be sighted when he tried to break in. As he reached the front of the building he ducked into a nearby bush as he saw his father step out of the building with a young woman carrying a clipboard in toe, it must be his personal assistant.
"I've cancelled all your appearances for the day, sir." The somewhat plump, plain looking girl with auburn hair said as she kept up with his hurried pace. "The chief of police's assistant wasn't being very flexible with me and wouldn't move the conference call about the incident that took place earlier this week with that creepy bug villain. I'm sorry."
"It's alright." Enji replied with a shrug, "I'll take it wherever I am, what time was it again?"
"Two o'clock. I'll forward the call-in details to your personal phone." His assistant replied with a polite bow of her head as they reached the awaiting car.
Enji nodded his head, "thank you."
His assistant glanced at the clear blue sky before smiling softly, "it would be a great day for flower viewing."
Enji looked to her curiously before a small whisper of a smile graced his lips, "I think you're right."
"Good luck, sir." His assistant offered him an encouraging smile as he got into the car.
Toya felt torn. From that exchange he had a feeling his father was visiting someone, there was a chance it could be Tira. He could take this chance while his father was away to scope out the agency and possibly sneak in or he could tail his father. It might lead him to Tira. He watched as his father's assistant went back inside and the car pulled away. It was now or never.
Once the car was a reasonable distance where he was sure he wouldn't be spotted, he leapt out of his hiding spot and flagged down a cab. The cab driver didn't seem to care that they were stalking another car and did a remarkable job staying an unsuspicious distance away from his father's car. About fifteen minutes outside of the city the scenery turned to countryside. Another ten minutes and his father's car pulled onto a gravel road leading up to a giant metal gate.
Toya told the cab driver to pass it to avoid suspicion and got a good look as they drove by. At first glance he thought it might be a prison, at second glance he thought it could be the home of some paranoid wealthy person. There was a sign out front: Sunny Gardens. In smaller font below it read: Mental Health Spa and Retreat. He almost scoffed at this, it looked like a prison not a spa. The grounds were surrounded by tall thick metal gates. There was even what appeared to be guard towers atop stone pillars at various points around the perimeter.
He told the cab driver to stop at the next road and paid him with some money he'd stolen from his father's study during his search. Originally, he'd intended on just threatening the cab driver and letting him keep his life as payment but he had been very accommodating and didn't pester him with questions or small talk. Toya exited the cab and doubled back toward the Asylum. It was located on the edge of the countryside and surrounded by forested hills. He ducked into the tree line to avoid being seen by anyone who could possibly be watching from the guard towers along the perimeter.
As he walked along the perimeter heading toward the back of the building trying to find any weak points in security or places he'd easily be able to break in through, in the event this is where Tira was. Behind the massive building was a rich botanical garden with pristine pathways. He spotted a few people in scrubs walking with what he assumed were patients some wearing robes some wearing muted clothing. His heart skipped a beat as he spotted a head of long frosty white hair, Tira!
She was sitting in a wheelchair with her hands lifelessly resting on the arm rests of her chair. Her long frosty white hair looked as if someone had braided it neatly to one side but he knew she hadn't done it herself; she didn't like her hair braided. If she ever had cause to wear it up, she'd throw it in a messy bun or wear it how mother had done it for her once when she wore a yukata, otherwise she liked it down and free. She was wearing a muted pale blue dress with a fluffy looking robe over top as if to fight off the morning chill, as if she needed it. Toya felt his heart constrict in his chest, she looked thin, like she was just wasting away to nothing. Her beautiful steel grey eyes were blank and lifeless, staring forward in a daze, unseeing.
His blood began to boil as he noticed their father exiting through the back door of what looked like a sunroom or indoor greenhouse into the botanical garden. It didn't take him long to find Tira, he met up with the nurse. Toya strained to hear but they were too far away. The nurse conversed with their father for awhile and Toya noticed his lips pursing into a frown, not liking what he had heard. He took a step away from the nurse and toward Tira, he said something with a gentle expression but she didn't react. He untied the robe and slowly pushed it off her shoulders.
Toya felt momentarily blinded by rage as he saw faint bruises on her upper arms, they looked like nearly prefect finger indention bruises, someone had grabbed her roughly. Their father frowned again and looked to the nurse, whatever he said wasn't in as nice a tone as before but Toya still couldn't hear. The nurse responded back and used some hand gestures that made it seem like she was retelling an event where someone had fallen. Toya frowned at this curious how Tira could have fallen when she seemed catatonic. Their father seemed to accept whatever she'd told him with a nod. He said something to Tira, but she didn't respond. There was zero reaction, not a twitch of a finger not a shift in glance. It was like she was nothing more than a breathtaking statue.
Toya felt his heart crumbling in his chest, he couldn't bear to see her like this. His beloved sister, the one he treasured most in this world, who was once so full of life was now nothing more than a hollow shell. He could barely remember the sound of her beautiful laughter, the memory now seeming too distant. The twins had always had a strong connection and ever since Tira was sent away, that connection seemed to be hazy, it was akin to having a bad signal sometimes it cut in and out. There were nights he'd wake up in a panic attack because it almost felt as if he'd lost signal and her light had gone out.
Toya watched with his fists clenched tightly at his sides as their father lifted Tira out of her wheelchair and carried her to a stone picnic table as if he'd done so many times before. Did he visit her often? He tried to move a little closer to see if he could hear anything their father was saying while remaining hidden in the trees. A few steps closer and he saw Tira's finger twitch. She turned her head, her steel grey eyes filled with clarity, for a moment. Her eyes locked onto him immediately as if she knew exactly where to find him.
His breath hitched in his throat he held his twin's gaze; she was trying to convey something to him with a single look. Her finger twitched again and Toya nearly jumped as he heard what sounded like something being etched into the trunks of the trees all around him. He tore his gaze away from Tira and his heart froze in his chest and his blood ran cold as he was gripped with horror. Every tree around him had ice sticking into it, the ice spelled out words on every tree trunk in the clearing around him.
'Help'
It was all she could convey to him. He stared in awe at the ice etchings, even in her current state, his little sister was amazingly strong.
"Tira?" His father's voice, laced with concern, drew his gaze back to them.
Blood dripped from Tira's nose; it must have taken her a lot of effort to activate her quirk when she was so weak. Toya felt his stomach churn unpleasantly, he could practically hear her screaming in his head, screaming for help. Something was wrong.
Enji leaned forward reaching across the stone picnic table with a handkerchief and wiped the blood away from his daughter's nose. He frowned, it typically only happened if she overused her quirk but there wasn't any ice around them. She'd used her quirk quite a bit a few night's ago, the same night she'd gotten the bruises on her arms. They were perfect hand prints, much like the permanent one he had left on her years ago by mistake. There had been a power outage that night from a bad storm and all the security cameras had been down for a while. Tira had been asleep when it happened, yet when the power came back and the cameras were back up, spear like shards of ice were all around her room as if her quirk had activated reflexively to protect herself but from what?
When he'd seen it on the camera feed on his mobile device, he asked her doctor about it on their daily call about her progress. The doctor told him one of the new overnight orderlies reported that she'd been woken by the storm and seemed distressed, when he entered her room she was startled and fell out of bed he'd tried to catch her but because of her weakened state it had left bruises on her arms. He looked to his catatonic daughter praying she'd say something, anything. He wanted to know how to help her.
