Chapter Thirty Two

"What do you think?" Rei asked with a warm smile as she looked to Tira's reflection in the mirror after finishing with her hair.

Tira blinked a few times, coming back to her senses and looked at herself in the mirror. Her mother had pulled her hair up and accented it with a cute hair pin that had dangling snowdrop flowers. She'd been spacing out a lot ever since she'd returned home without Toya. She glanced at her mother's reflection in the mirror and smiled. "I like it, thanks Mom." Her voice was whisper soft and sounded distant.

Rei offered her a somber smile, she could see the heartache in Tira's eyes and knew she was trying to put on a brave face for everyone else. There was a soft knock on the door to Tira's room causing Tira to jump. Rei looked to the door as it opened and smiled as Shoto and Natsuo stepped in holding a garment bag with Tira's yukata in it. They were dressed in their own yukata, Natsuo wearing a pretty navy blue one with white accents and Shoto wearing a red one with navy accents.

"You two look so handsome." Rei beamed.

Tira glanced at them through the mirror and quietly nodded her agreement.

Shoto and Natsuo frowned slightly, Tira seemed to be withdrawing again. Natsuo stepped forward, laying the garment bag atop Tira's bed. He approached Tira slowly before bending down to kiss her on the cheek, "I'm glad you're home safe, Nee-chan."

Tira was a little startled by her younger brother's actions and tried her best to smile, "...thanks..."

Shoto moved forward and mirrored his brother's actions kissing her opposite cheek, "I'm glad you're home safe too, Nee-san."

Tira smiled at her younger brothers.

Shoto and Natsuo retreated from her room so their mother could help her into her yukata. Tira smiled as she saw the beautiful yukata her mother had gotten for her, it was a pale powder blue with cute little snow bunnies littering the bottom and pretty snowflakes spattering the rest of it. Once she was in her yukata her heart hurt, Toya would have loved this.

"Do you like it?" Rei asked nervously as Tira froze up at the sight of her reflection.

Tira nodded as tears welled in her eyes. Rei gently looped her arm with Tira's and steered her out of her bedroom to meet up with the rest of the family. Everyone else was waiting by the front door already dressed in their yukata and ready to go. Their father, looking a little awkward and unsure of what to do or say, was wearing a navy yukata with some bright red and orange koi fish. Fuyumi had a pretty pink and blue yukata with bright flowers all over it. Rei was wearing a muted grey yukata with bright pink cherry blossoms.

"Tira, you look like an ice princess right out of a fairytale." Fuyumi beamed as she spotted her elder sister. Natsuo and Shoto nodded their agreement before everyone looked to Enji to say something.

He cleared his throat unsure of what to say to his withdrawn daughter, "you look beautiful."

Tira looked shocked by her father's words before smiling a soft genuine smile, "...thank you..."

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief glad she was still speaking.

The Todoroki family made their way to the awaiting car to take them all to the festival. Natsuo, Fuyumi and Shoto hovered around Tira to make sure she didn't trip on her way as she started to space out again.

"Where do you think she goes when she does this?" Natsuo pondered as he pulled Tira toward him so she wouldn't trip over a rock in her path.

"I'm not sure." Fuyumi frowned as she looked to the faraway look on Tira's face and the tears welling in her eyes.

"Probably somewhere with Toya." Shoto supplied quietly.

"I still can't believe he turned into a villain." Fuyumi said softly.

"Can't you?" Natsuo scoffed, "after everything Dad put them through."

Fuyumi felt tears well in her eyes as she thought of one of her earliest memories, "...he felt Tira die...when she had that accident..."

"That's probably what did it." Natsuo grumbled.

Shoto looked back at his older siblings and saw tears welling in Tira's eyes, "you're upsetting her."

Fuyumi and Natsuo looked to Tira and instantly felt sick with guilt. They weren't entirely sure if she could still hear them when she was spacing out but it appeared their conversation was upsetting her. "Sorry." They both bowed their heads.

Tira didn't react to them.

"Maybe she can't hear us." Natsuo guessed.

"I don't know." Fuyumi frowned, "has Tira seen fireworks before?" She asked worriedly wondering if the loud noises would be too scary for her.

Natsuo and Shoto thought for a moment.

"There were some at the Sports Festival." Shoto offered, "but I don't know if it startled her or not."

"Nii-chan took me to see fireworks." Tira said quietly causing all three of her younger siblings to jump.

"He did?" Fuyumi asked curiously.

"The same night you got drunk?" Natsuo asked with a laugh, still finding the idea of Tira drunk hilarious.

Tira blushed as she thought of that night, "...it wasn't on purpose..." She mumbled causing Natsuo to laugh.

"That's even more hilarious." Natsuo nearly doubled over.

The six of them got into the awaiting car. Tira gazed out the window blankly fading away again. Unsure of how to act around his family and not wanting to ruin their fun, Enji chose to sit in the passenger seat next to the driver to give the others some space. He glanced back at Tira in concern noticing she seemed to be very far away. Guilt weighed him down, if he'd only been able to catch Toya and bring him home, Tira wouldn't be in this state. He'd let her down, again.

When the car came to a stop outside of the local summer festival, Enji had half a mind to stay in the car and let his family go off without him, they'd probably have a better time without him. Natsuo, Fuyumi and Shoto were saying more than they'd said to him in the past year just catching up with their mother. They all seemed like they were having a good time, everyone except for Tira. He frowned as he noticed Tira still staring blankly out the window as everyone else exited the car.

"Tira?" He called to her softly.

She blinked and seemed surprised to see they were already at the festival. Slowly she moved toward the door but paused as she noticed her father not making a move to exit the car. "Dad?"

"Perhaps I should stay behind." He said quietly, "you go on ahead and have a good time."

"I want to watch the fireworks with everyone." Tira said softly. Though, not everyone was here and it was tearing her up inside.

Enji offered his eldest daughter a small smile as he realized she wanted him to stay, "alright, then we better get going." He exited the car before heading for the rear door to offer Tira a hand.

After he'd rescued her from The League of Villains, he noticed she no longer hesitated or shied away from him. She slipped her hand in his and let him help her from the car. The Todoroki family awkwardly made their way to the festival. Enji trailed along behind them keeping his distance after Rei had offered Tira her arm to walk with her. He watched with a small smile as they stopped at a booth with some carnival games. They all looked like they were having a good time without him.

Tira noticed her father standing not too far off, watching them all from a distance and frowned. She dropped her hold on Rei's arm and slipped away unnoticed. Enji jumped as Tira appeared in front of him and poked him roughly in the chest with her icy finger.

"What's wrong?" He asked her.

"You're all by yourself." Tira frowned as she slipped her cold hand in his and pulled him over to the booth with the others.

The others seemed surprised to see Tira return with their father, none of them had noticed she'd slipped away. They all had some small plush they'd won from the carnival games. The attendant seemed startled to see Endeavor and nearly tripped over himself as he greeted him.

"E-Endeavor, what prize are you aiming for?" The attendant asked nervously.

He looked at Tira, she was the only one that didn't have a prize, "which one do you want?"

Tira looked at him confused for a moment before looking to the plethora of plushies on the wall. She spotted a cute little penguin plushie and smiled as she thought of her talk with Toya, about running away to somewhere cold and having penguin neighbors. "That one." She pointed to the penguin.

Rei smiled as she watched her husband start to relax. He won the penguin with little effort and handed it over to Tira who hugged it with a sad faraway smile. Everyone looked to her worriedly as they noticed a single tear slip before freezing on her cheek as she thought of Toya.

Natsuo clenched his fists, he'd always hated their father for what he'd done to the twins. Though he wasn't likely to admit it for quite some time, aloud, he did notice the progress he was making in trying to be a better person. Now he felt rage toward the elder brother he'd always looked up to as he saw the heartbroken look in Tira's eyes. He glanced around for something, anything, that would cheer her up, even a little. His gaze fell on a food stall serving strawberry crepes and he hurriedly pointed to it.

"Nee-chan! They have strawberry crepes!" He said a little louder than he'd intended in his panic to get Tira's mind off of Toya causing Rei and Tira to jump at his sudden outburst.

Tira looked to where Natsuo was pointing after recovering from her shock, she spotted a cute food stall decorated with big plush strawberries. They were handing out beautifully crafted strawberry crepes. Enji broke away from the group before anyone could say anything and purchased several crepes. With six crepes in hand, Enji returned to his family and they found a spot away from the crowd with some benches so Rei could get off her feet.

Everyone held their breath and watched Tira carefully as she accepted the crepe. Since she'd returned home, she didn't have much of an appetite and they were all worried for her. She nibbled at the crepe and everyone breathed a sigh of relief before enjoying their own crepes.

Halfway through her crepe, Tira looked up and noticed whipped cream stuck to the side of her father's face. A soft giggle escaped her, startling her parents and younger siblings.

"What's so funny?" Natsuo asked with a smile, it had been a long time since he'd heard Tira laugh.

Tira pointed at their father and everyone turned to look at him before bursting into a fit of laughter.

"What's so funny about my face?" Enji grumbled.

Rei turned to see what the matter was and laughed softly at the whipped cream stuck to the side of his face.

"What the hell is on my face?" Enji snapped embarrassed and began wiping at his opposite cheek sending his wife and children into hysterics.

Tira activated her quirk to help her father out and a reflective pillar of ice shot out of the ground in front of him and formed into a mirror for him to find the whipped cream. Embarrassed, Enji wiped it away gruffly. Despite being embarrassed his heart felt lighter hearing the sounds of his wife and children laughing, at least he hadn't damaged them to the point they couldn't laugh and enjoy themselves.

After crepes they walked around looking at the various fun masks the stands had and tried various festival foods. Tira managed to break away from everyone to go to the restroom on her own. While she was having fun with her family, she wished more than anything that Toya was here with them and it was getting harder to laugh and smile with the others when all she could think about was Toya and if he was okay.

As she exited the restroom, a hand clapped over her mouth and a strong arm wound around her waist pulling her into the darkness between the restroom and one of the other stalls. Her heart skipped a beat and she nearly panicked before she realized she could feel the touch of her abductor, it was Toya! She lightly elbowed him in the chest so he'd let her go.

Toya released her from his hold and smiled as she turned to face him. "Sorry for scaring you."

Tira looked him over quickly, he didn't look hurt. Relieved that he was alright she threw her arms around him. "Nii-chan, I was worried about you."

Toya relaxed as she hugged him and he hugged her back tightly. "I know...that wasn't how things were supposed to go." He frowned.

Tira broke the hug and took a step away from him.

Toya smiled as he looked her over in her pretty yukata, "you look beautiful." Her cheeks reddened and he let out a soft chuckle as he slipped her hand in his. "Come on." He paused as he met resistance. "Tira?"

"I don't want to leave..." Tira said softly.

"I have no intention of abducting you this time...I shouldn't have before, I see that now, it wasn't a good time..." He averted his eyes, feeling too guilty to meet her gaze. "I just want to talk somewhere away from people." He reassured her.

Tira nodded and let him pull her through the dark alley to an even darker path that led to a crumbling stairwell up to an abandoned shrine that was in disrepair.

Meanwhile, Enji looked around anxiously, Tira had been gone an awfully long time. Rei and the others seemed to be too caught up in catching up on all that they'd missed over the years they didn't even realize Tira was gone. Enji excused himself from the group and went off in search of his eldest daughter praying she hadn't spaced out and gotten hurt. As he neared the restrooms, he spotted Tira climbing up a set of crumbling stairs with a young man. They weren't facing him so he couldn't make out any of the young man's features but from how relaxed Tira looked with her hand in his, he assumed it was Toya.

A moment of terror welled up inside of him, was he going to steal Tira away again? He raced after them hoping he could catch them before he lost them both again. Enji slowed to a stop as he realized the twins had stopped at the run-down shrine. He hesitated as he heard Tira speak.

"Nii-chan, please come home." Tira said softly as Toya stopped near the run-down shrine.

Enji couldn't see Toya in the darkness, he was standing just outside of the light and he feared moving any closer and startling them. He couldn't bear it if Tira was stolen away again. He wished his eldest son would listen to reason and return home.

"I can't." Toya replied softly.

"...I don't want you to go back...I don't like your friends." Tira protested.

Toya chuckled softly, "I don't much care for them most days either..."

"What about running away? Remember, we were going to go somewhere cold and have penguin neighbors." Tira said hopefully.

Enji felt his heart clench in his chest at the thought of losing them both forever.

"That was a nice dream, but that's all it ever will be." Toya replied morosely.

"It doesn't have to be." Tira sounded upset and desperate.

Enji and Toya jumped as she activated her quirk covering the entire hill top in a sheet of ice. A small cute cottage appeared next to the twins entirely constructed of ice. Tira hugged the plush penguin her father had won for her, as two little ice penguins appeared outside the house.

Toya stared in awe at the beautiful artistry of her quirk and offered her a somber smile, "you always were the most amazing." He tenderly brushed his thumb across her cheek. "It was a good dream." He smiled as he looked at the cute ice penguins in front of the cottage.

"Don't leave again." Tira begged him.

"All the false heroes need to pay, Dad most of all." Toya's voice faltered as if he were losing his resolve looking at whatever heartbroken expression was sure to be on Tira's face.

Tira clenched her fist and punched him in the chest startling Toya and Enji both. Toya smiled; it didn't hurt. "He's not how he was...he's changed and he's paid enough-."

"He killed you." Toya growled.

"You're right, he did, and I forgave him." Tira said boldly. "Don't say this is for my benefit when you're going against my wishes...you're just being selfish..." Her voice cracked.

Toya hesitated, thinking over her words. "And all the other false heroes?"

"If Dad can change...why can't they? They're human, it's human nature to make mistakes..."

Enji tried to get a better look at what was going on, it was harder now that the landscape had become completely frozen. The twins were quiet, it seemed Tira was starting to get through to her brother as he stood still contemplating her words.

Toya slowly wrapped her in his arms. He reached up and plucked the hair ornament from her hair causing her long white hair to spill down her slender shoulders in delicate waves. Tira froze up in surprise.

"Why did you do that?" Tira asked with a pout.

"I wanted a memento, to remember how beautiful you look tonight." Toya said softly before capturing her lips in a kiss.

Enji let out a panicked sound as the twins engaged in a taboo kiss startling them both and causing them to separate. Toya took off into the darkness leaving Tira behind staring after him with tears streaking down her cheeks.

"Toya!" Enji cried, he hadn't meant to chase him off.

Toya didn't turn back; he clutched the hair ornament with the dangling snowdrops tightly in his hand and ran away. Tira watched her twin disappear and felt a sharp pain in her chest. She slipped to her knees and let out a soft cry as the pain in her chest intensified.

Enji raced forward nearly slipping across the frozen landscape. He slid to a stop next to Tira and frowned, he hadn't meant to make Toya run off and upset her all over again.

Tira looked up at her father with tear filled eyes. The pain in her chest kept growing. She let out a soft whimper of pain. "...it hurts..."

Enji knelt beside her, worriedly. Was she able to feel again? He didn't see any physical wounds at first glance. "Where does it hurt?"

"Here." Tira clutched at her chest as the pain grew, even more, this wasn't just her pain, Toya was hurting too.

Enji grimaced and swept her into his arms, "...I'm sorry..." He wiped away her tears and turned to head back toward the festival. The sheet of ice he was standing on nearly made him lose his balance. "Tira, the ice."

Tira waved her hand and the small ice cottage and the layer of ice covering the hilltop broke apart into millions of teeny tiny ice particles before melting away to nothing.

"Do you want to go home?" Enji asked after a moment as her tears slowed.

Tira shook her head, "...the fireworks will be starting soon..."

Enji offered her a small somber smile, "alright." He gave her a moment to compose herself before carrying her back to the festival.

Once they returned to the festival he gently set her on her feet so as not to draw too much attention before draping an arm across her slender shoulders, keeping her close. They navigated through the crowd until they found Rei, Shoto, Fuyumi and Natsuo.

"There you two are, we were starting to worry!" Fuyumi called as she spotted them first. She noticed Tira's eyes were a little red and puffy as if she'd been crying but said nothing.

"...Sorry..." Tira apologized quietly.

"You don't have to apologize, Nee-chan." Natsuo assured Tira, completely ignoring their father.

"The fireworks are going to start soon, we should find somewhere to watch them." Rei suggested so everyone would stop focusing on Tira.

The Todoroki family found a nice spot to watch the fireworks that was close enough to the awaiting car they could bail if the fireworks were too loud for Tira. Natsuo, Fuyumi and Rei sat on the available bench Tira sat on the plush grass in front of the bench with Shoto and her father on either side of her. Everyone kept looking at Tira worriedly waiting for the fireworks to begin.

Tira jumped at the first pop surprised by the sudden sound but relaxed as she saw an explosion of color light up the sky overhead. She wished Toya had stayed for the fireworks. A single tear slipped from her hold and froze to her cheek as she looked up at the explosion of color in the sky.
