Chapter Twenty Seven
Toya woke from his first good night of sleep in years. He slept better when Tira was with him. A small smile graced his lips as he realized Tira was laying atop his chest, sound asleep. Gently, he rolled her over onto the bed. His heart stuttered in his chest as he took note of the flush of her cheeks and her unsteady breathing.
"Tira?" He placed a hand to her forehead and frowned, she was burning up. He swore under his breath and lifted her into his arms, he had to get her somewhere to bring her body temperature down quickly. Hurriedly he sprinted out of his room and down the hall leading to the bar.
"Good Morning Dabi." Kurogiri greeted him as he ran by, "is everything alr-?" He cut off as the young man disappeared in the direction of the walk-in freezer. "Peculiar." Curiosity got the better of him. The pair looked to be in bad shape and he couldn't just leave them alone.
Sighing, Kurogiri followed Dabi into the walk-in freezer. He frowned as Dabi set the unconscious girl atop some boxes and turned as if to look for something. Dabi froze as he realized the shadowy, Kurogiri had followed him. His teal eyes narrowed into a menacing glare.
Kurogiri held his hands up for peace before Dabi could lash out at him, "I'm merely here to offer assistance."
"I don't need your assistance." Dabi hissed.
Kurogiri looked to the pale wisp of a girl with the rosy cheeks, "not you, her." He nodded in the direction of the feverish girl.
Dabi clenched his fists but kept from snapping as he looked back at Tira. She was burning up and her breathing was labored. He bit his lip to keep from saying anything. Tira was in bad shape he couldn't risk upsetting the one who could possibly help her. He took a step back so Kurogiri could get closer.
Kurogiri frowned as he looked down at her deteriorating condition. She needed a doctor but Dabi wouldn't be allowed to accompany him. "I can take her to our doctor, however you're too new to the organization, I won't be permitted to let you accompany me. You'll have to put your trust in me."
Toya's eyes narrowed into a terrifying glare and Kurogiri felt a shiver run down his spine. He grit his teeth and swore under his breath before his glare intensified, "fine, but if anything happens to her, you're dead."
Kurogiri chuckled at this, Giran was right. "I have no ill intentions toward your little pet, if anything I'd like to see her do well, she's an innocent in all of this." He lifted the pale sickly girl into his arms, "we'll return soon."
Toya reluctantly nodded and watched them disappear into a black mist. He dropped onto one of the boxes in the freezer. His body sagged in defeat and he placed his head in his hands and let out a groan. This was not how things were supposed to go. There were too many complications. Worry for Tira began to eat away at him, had this been a bad idea? Maybe he should have waited to steal her away.
Meanwhile, Enji Todoroki paced his office. There was no sign of his eldest children anywhere across the city. He'd failed, again. Why couldn't he do anything right? He'd let Tira down, once more. When he'd returned home and let his younger children know that Tira was missing, Shoto walked away from him without a word, Natsuo screamed some profanity at him before leaving, and Fuyumi looked like she might break. It was all too much for her, she got up from the table and uttered two words to him before leaving the room, "get out".
Even Fuyumi, who'd held out hope for him for the longest had finally given up on him. Sick with guilt Enji pushed himself into his work, he'd been staying at the agency ever since Tira had been abducted. Where were they? It had been days since then, was Tira alright? Had any of her stitches reopened? Was Toya able to keep her wounds from getting infected? Hot tears of frustration welled in his eyes. Why did it have to be her? Why did he always hurt her?
"Sir-?" His secretary paused in the doorway and looked to the office in awe, Endeavor had been holed up in here for days. The once pristine office was starting to look like a frat house. The sofa had some pillows and blankets half dangling off of it. There were empty cartons of instant meals and beverages across every surface. "Oh my." She gasped as she spotted Endeavor, she'd never seen him so out of sorts. His attire was a mess, all wrinkled and somewhat stained from some kind of food he'd spilled on himself, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes. "Sir...I really think you should get some rest."
"I can't, I have to be ready to go as soon as they find Tira." Enji's voice was so defeated.
His secretary looked to him with pity filled eyes, "Sir, it's my job to answer the phone, I will let you know the moment we hear anything, please trust in me and get yourself some rest.
"I'm a failure as a father." Enji muttered darkly more to himself than to his secretary as he wasn't entirely sure if she was actually there or just a hallucination from sleep deprivation.
"Nobody's perfect, Sir." She offered him a smile, "and even if you have made mistakes, it's very obvious, to everyone, that you're trying, you're giving it your best effort to be better. Don't be so hard on yourself, Sir."
"It'll never be enough." He sounded so broken and defeated. "I'll never be enough."
"I can't speak for your other children, Sir, but Tira spent a lot of time here, and I don't believe for a second that she feels that way. Now, pull yourself together, for that sweet girl, go clean yourself up, eat a proper meal and get some rest. I'll stay glued to phone for the rest of the day and will notify you the moment I hear anything about Tira." His Secretary spoke in a stern voice.
"Alright...thank you..." Enji sighed in defeat and went to do as he was told.
Somewhere far away, Tira woke in a hospital bed she didn't recognize and let out a scream of panic as she saw some hideous looking creature with razor sharp teeth, black mottled skin and an exposed brain. Spears of ice shot up from the ground around her.
"Please calm yourself, Tira." A somewhat familiar voice sounded from the corner of the room. She glanced in the direction of the voice and spotted the somewhat scary shadow man by the name of Kurogiri. "It won't hurt you; it's helping the doctor who's seeing to your care."
Tira shook her head, not trusting the man.
"Quite an impressive quirk, I think one of my experiments could test it out." An unfamiliar voice sounded from the doorway. Tira turned and spotted an eerie old man in a white lab coat. He was flanked by more scary looking creatures.
She didn't like this. Where was Toya? She tried to sit up but the creature closest to her placed a hand across her chest to keep her in place. A panicked scream escaped her and the ice around the room went berserk. More spears of ice shot from the floor, walls and ceiling creating a frozen iron maiden within the room. Kurogiri warped out of the room to save himself and reappeared in the hall behind the Doctor.
They watched in awe as the ice spears avoided the girl and impaled the Nomu that had touched her. "With her on his side, Shigaraki won't have much trouble achieving his goals." A dark voice sounded from behind the Doctor and Kurogiri.
"I don't think there's much of a chance of her joining us, Master." Kurogiri bowed politely to the newcomer.
"You have an experiment that can copy quirks for a time, isn't that right?" The dark newcomer asked the Doctor.
He nodded and motioned for one of the creatures flanking him. Tira watched as it reached out to touch Kurogiri before vanishing. She didn't like any of these men, they were all terrifying, she wanted to leave. She found herself desperately wishing that Toya or their father would save her. The scary creature that had touched Kurogiri appeared at her side in a cloud of black mist and reached a hand out to touch her.
As the creature tried to copy her quirk, it's eyes nearly bulged out of its head as it absorbed some of her quirk. The blood in its veins turned to slush as it's heart suddenly became frozen. It dropped to the ground with a loud clunk as its entire body turned to ice.
"Interesting, I don't think it's safe to take that little one's quirk. That complicates things a little." The dark man, who was the most terrifying of the three spoke in his eerie voice. "Kurogiri, see what you can do to convince the little Ice Princess to help Shigaraki."
Tira shakily sat up, "I won't join villains." She cast her hands outward causing lethal spears of ice to spring up through the hall after the terrifying men. They all vanished in a shadowy black mist and Tira slipped from the hospital bed. She was still wearing the black night dress Toya had helped her into. She ripped out the new IV's and tubes and scrambled to the window. She was pretty high up and the city below didn't look familiar to her. She cast her hands toward the window and ice spears shot up from the ground around her and pierced through the glass.
Shakily she scrambled onto the fire escape and began making her way down. She had no idea where she was or where Toya was and was starting to panic. The side of the building became encased in ice as she passed by on her way down the fire escape. Once she was on the ground, she took off at a run. Her body wasn't moving nearly as quick as she was used to and she wondered if it was because of her injuries or if it was something the strange Doctor had given her. She scanned the area for a payphone or someone she could ask for help.
"Please calm yourself, Tira." Kurogiri's voice sounded from behind her. Ice shot up from the ground around her and exploded outward.
Kurogiri narrowly avoided being impaled by the exploding ice shrapnel and reappeared in front of the panicked girl. He was worried for her wellbeing; he knew she lacked the capability to feel and didn't understand the severity of her injuries. He extended a shadowy hand toward her.
"NO!" Tira screamed in a panic praying someone would come running to her aid. Ice formed a barrier around her and stretched high toward the sky rocketing upward like a macabre spiked ice tower that stretched up higher than some of the nearby buildings. She prayed it was enough that someone would see and alert her father.
"I apologize, Tira, I know you're frightened and confused, but I assure you, I only wish to help you get your injuries treated and return you to Dabi." Kurogiri appeared in the ice tower behind her and swept her into his arms before they both disappeared in the mist.
Tira struggled against him, to no avail. She kicked, flailed and screamed in a desperate attempt to get free. Without her realizing it, a needle pierced the side of her neck and injected a powerful sedative into her system. In the midst of her flailing she realized her limbs were starting to move slower as if she were fighting through molasses. The edges of her vision began to blur.
"N-no," she cried, "...Dad...help...me..." The pale girl fell limp in Kurogiri's arms as the sedative took hold.
Kurogiri breathed a soft sigh of relief and relinquished the girl over to the Nomu assisting the Doctor so they could finish treating her. He was curious about her words and went to a nearby computer to try to get some more information. After nearly an hour of searching he let out a soft gasp of surprise as he found the sickly girl. Her father was a hero...not just any hero...the second ranked hero...The Flame Hero, Endeavor.
"You can take the frosty one back now, but I'm not giving any more freebies for that one, too much collateral damage." The old Doctor growled.
Kurogiri exited his search browser and thanked the old Doctor before making his way to Tira's new room. He activated his quirk and returned her to Dabi's room. Dabi was pacing in the room and nearly attacked him the moment he appeared. He relaxed after a moment as he noticed Tira was resting a little easier and had some of her color back.
"How is she?" Dabi asked.
"The Doctor wouldn't have released her to me if he wasn't sure she was stable enough, so I believe she'll be alright." Kurogiri replied before pausing trying to choose his words carefully, "there was a slight complication, she awoke in a panic and managed to make a brief escape-."
"What?!" Dabi roared, he was livid, "how the hell did that happen?"
"The girl has quite a strong quirk and it's highly defensive and practically impenetrable." Kurogiri continued.
"If you hurt her-." Dabi began threateningly.
"No, I didn't harm her but she was quite distressed...she said something peculiar in her distress...a cry for help...to her father..." Kurogiri paused again but felt a spark of fear as Dabi turned to him with a menacing look.
"What did you say?"
Kurogiri felt a fleeting sense of danger before he noticed Dabi trying to calm himself, "she cried for her father to help her..."
Dabi clenched his fists, "thanks for your help, now get the hell out."
