Chapter Twenty
It took a week to settle the dust. Lorelei dressed carefully for the press conference she arranged with Mooch's brother's help. Elvin Bowers. His timely intervention in a Tampa Florida court, uncovered the paper trail of money funneled to the Russian group funding Gerald's ambitious plans. Not Mafia at all. Putin denied all knowledge, but she understood it wasn't the truth.
The CIA took over and conducted in depth interviews with Igor Malachov and his co-pilot Mohamed Abram. Ties to Iranian terrorist groups were uncovered. The news stories all over the major media channels were speculative but didn't come close to the truth as she knew it.
Buried in the entertainment news, Melissa Grange's tragic death in Dubai was mourned, along with the discovery the man with her was her fiancé. The spin was they were misidentified by local custom officials as drug smugglers. Lorelei wished she could reveal the truth. Her sister shed more than a few tears over the loss of the little boy she loved, but told her privately, Nicky would have ended up dead sooner than later one way or the other.
Taron pulled the zipper of her pencil thin skirt up for her, as she inspected her reflection in the mirror. Learning more about his association with Delta Force Seven impressed her. What started out as an assignment to get close to her turned into the best thing ever to happen in Lorelei's life. A quick ceremony at city hall sealed their relationship permanently.
Melissa was a deep sleeper agent for Russia. An assassin. Ditch, the member of Mooch's team who spoke multiple languages translated her entire mission log for the CIA. It explained a long trail of missing and killed in action Delta Force members. The corresponding mole at the San Antonio base was in JAG's hands with a promise to turn him over to the CIA next.
"Are you ready to face the circus?" Taron wrapped his arms around her waist from where he stood behind her.
"Not my favorite thing. Are you ready for the paparazzi?"
"We'll be out of here right after you talk to them. Johnathon was generous, clearing out of Puerto Seguro like he did." Taron picked up her favorite piece of jewelry. The signature piece was her gift to herself after signing her first deal with Sony.
"You can't blame him. I'm glad the surgery to repair his ankle was successful. I wonder if he will ever go back to the island?"
"I think it will take time. Katilynn and Sparks will use it for their wedding and stay after for an extended honeymoon."
Lorelei held the curls at the back of her neck up for Taron as he fastened the sparkling creation for her. It went well with the business suit in deep brown and picked up the color of her eyes. The smaller stones were set in squares of gold, and the incredible twenty-five carat flawless yellow topaz teardrop pendant rested at the bottom of the vee neck of her pale yellow camisole.
A beep notification interrupted them and raised Taron's right eyebrow. "That's Sparky's tone." He took his phone out of his back pocket and thumbed in. He pumped his fist as he read.
"Well?" Lorelei hoped it was the news they were hoping for.
"Gus was delivered with six hours to spare. Ayad was extracted successfully. Both teams are headed back for an extended furlough."
Lorelei turned to hug him. Waiting for news and the all safe was excruciating.
"I'm so happy everything worked out as planned."
Taron nodded. She could see the relief on his face. He checked his watch.
"We're going to be late. Here's your blazer." Her brand spanking new husband held it up for her to slip her arms into the sleeves.
"Okay. Time to change the course of my career. I can't wait."
She liked the way Taron's open collared light blue shirt brought out the color of his eyes too. Neatly tailored jeans and a black leather belt completed his outfit. There was no talking him out of wearing his favorite hiking boots. He finally got the haircut he needed.
"I like you better without the stage make up. I'm glad you decided not to wear any of that crap anymore," Taron said as he opened the door to leave their hotel suite.
"I feel like I shed a skin that didn't fit anymore. I love it," Lorelei affirmed. "Long overdue." She stopped to turn her face up for his kiss. "Let's go tell the world."
