Dumbledore announced Slughorn and Moody as the Potions Teacher and Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher respectively. Ryuzaki's eyes narrowed the moment they landed on Moody. Light frowned at him, feeling that something was off as well. He couldn't exactly figure out what, but it was. Ryuzaki took him aside just after they finished their breakfast.
Light's eyes widened and he nodded, lips thinning as Ryuzaki spoke. Their first class was Potions. Slughorn was giving everyone the impression of a very bubbly Professor. They had Potions with three Gryffindors, four Hufflepuff and three Ravelclaws. Apart from Light and Ryuzaki, the other two Slytherins were Misa Amane and Gretchen Avery. As much as Light would have loved to keep a distance between him and Misa, they really didn't wish to share a table with the other houses.
So, they sat, kept standing in the case of Ryuzaki, because he wouldn't sit properly and crouching would just endanger the other students to harmful Potions. Slughorn came in, beaming genially, though Light was getting ticked off, for no actual reason, however he kept a smile pasted to his face. He felt as if he deserved an Oscar for hiding his irritation, especially when he heard faint sounds of gossip from a few others, in another table. Ryuzaki looked blissfully ignorant.
"I am your Potions Professor as you all already know. Today, we shall begin brewing the Draught Of The Living Death. The instructions are in your textbooks. Begin."
Ryuzaki didn't bother opening any book. He straight went with the Potion. Light took out his and frowned. Some instructions looked wrong. For, even if he went that way, it wouldn't exactly be a perfect Potion. Misa and Gretchen had begun with the book.
Keeping the book in front of him, Light carefully began brewing his Potion. Ryuzaki was already Midway, his Potion emitting the exact colour of vapour which the book described. Slughorn came to their table on one of his rounds and his eyes widened in appreciation when they landed upon Ryuzaki's Potion.
"Bravo, Mr. Hideki. This is really exceptional."
"Thank you, Professor."
Ryuzaki's reply was clipped, his attention on the Potion in front of him. Light had wearily caught up with him, his book proving to be quite useless in most of the instructions. Slughorn saw his and his surprise was still there.
"You must be Light Yagami. I have heard of you. Highest scorer in OWLs, right?"
"Yes, Professor."
Again, Light wondered what would happen if he went into acting. He would get an Oscar with all the acting of being nice that he did.
"This Potion is perfect too."
Misa's look of admiration wasn't exactly lost on him, but he pretended to not notice. He tuned out the Gryffindors' whispers of the Slytherins having sabotaged their Potion ingredients to be the only one to make a perfect Potion. Pathetic.
Ryuzaki finished exactly five minutes before Light did. Slughorn was all over them, claiming them to be Potions proteges and what not. Light politely smiled at him throughout, Ryuzaki just had that indescribable look on his face, which made you wonder whether he was going to murder you or just hug you.
"...and so," Slughorn said, keeping them back in the classroom, "Would you be so kind as to join the Slug Club?"
Light gave him a blank look. Ryuzaki shrugged and politely declined and slipped past a very disappointed Slughorn. Light, stuck between doing a very sensible thing that is, running away and pleasing his teacher and keeping up his image, ended up choosing the latter.
Why?
Because he was Light Yagami.
Ryuzaki had a distasteful look on his face when Light returned.
"He likes collecting trophies, except they are living people. He takes the students who he sees having potential in them under him, hoping that they will get into important jobs and give him favours. Needless to say, he has succeeded in that."
Light shrugged helplessly. He couldn't exactly do anything about it. Ryuzaki's eyes sharpened all of a sudden, and Light knew why.
Their next class was Defense Against The Dark Arts.
With Professor Mad-Eye Moody.
With their most unfortunate history of Defense Professors, they hadn't exactly got the best teaching. It was scattered at the best, and many students were looking forward to learning from Moody, because he happened to be an Auror. A very famous one, lauded for having put countless criminals and Death Eaters in prison.
He was the kind of man Light looked up to.
With his wooden leg clunking, he entered the classroom, drawing silence from the most. Ryuzaki was in his customary crouch, not even Moody's revolving eye glaring at him could faze him. He did things exactly as he pleased.
Moody got up to the table and took out his flask to drink from. Quick as lightning, Light got up and purposefully knocked into him, spilling the contents. Moody's eyes widened and he glared at Light, while the rest of the students looked up in shock.
Perfect Light Yagami, always polite and courteous, being rude to a teacher? Unbelievable.
Some students who resented him looked happy because he was going to get detention.
Ryuzaki knew better because he stood up as well, his voice soft as he spoke, "Barty Crouch Jr. I believe that Azkaban would be happy to welcome you back."
"Moody"'s eyes widened in disbelief, as Light picked up the spilt drink and sniffed at it.
"Polyjuice. Ryuga was right."
Knowing his game was up, Barty Crouch Jr. took out his wand, preparing to hex Light into oblivion. But he had been prepared. A punch sent the Death Eater flying as everyone took their wands in their hands. Whoever they were, they didn't wish to die. Especially not at the hands of a crazed Death Eater.
The revolving eye and leg popped out as his limbs grew back.
"Would someone mind calling the Headmaster?" Ryuzaki said in the shocked silence.
Misa recovered first and nodded, running off the fetch Dumbledore.
"Incarceus," Ryuzaki said softly and the criminal was bound up.
He said it specifically to show exactly what he was doing.
A Petrificius Totalus shut him up, and he lay there, unmoving, waiting for judgement from one Albus Dumbledore who appeared ten minutes later.
"It's quite unfortunate that the year had to begin this way," the old man began, levitating Crouch up, "I am going to call the Minister to sort things out. Defense classes would be suspended until them. 50 points to Slytherin for figuring him out."
If they had been Gryffindors, it would have been two hundred. But, atleast they did get some points. Light sighed and handed the flask to Dumbledore, who smiled at him and went out of the room.
"This period is free. Transfiguration and Charms will be cancelled. Take today as a holiday."
Admist whoops and cheers, the sixth years exited the Defense Classroom.
"Wow, Ryuga and Light are so smart. Who would have guessed?"
"Hey, Light, how did you guys figure him out?"
"I think it was all Light, Ryuga just played along."
"That's discrediting him, Light clearly said—"
The two people in question had snuck off through a secret passage. Light knew it because he had stumbled across it, and Ryuzaki knew it due to his explorations of the castle.
"You quickly became famous, Ryuzaki."
"Did I? Hadn't noticed."
Light sighed. The other's cynical nature grated on his nerves at times.
"It's a free day, cheer up."
"Hmm."
Light rolled his eyes as they continued through the passage. It led to the Black Lake, where many students had gathered. A few came up to them, asking questions. Somehow Ryuzaki managed to slip past, leaving Light to answer them.
Though, some people were really gullible. Anyone, if they used their brains would have seen the obvious holes in his story, but they didn't.
And that was fine by him.
Better than explaining how Ryuzaki had procured a magical map of the castle.
