Ryuzaki looked determined to finish all the sweets on the table. Light shook his head, amused as he ate his own plate. Near was fidgeting, he didn't look particularly happy to be surrounded by so many people. He didn't attend feasts that much, choosing to take out an apple and leave, and sometimes Mello had to actually drag him to eat something, claiming that, "It would be no fun competing against a starved kid."
Matt didn't really pay much attention to them, choosing to play chess against imaginary opponents in a miniature board. He had charmed the pieces themselves and these sufficed when he couldn't get his hands on the video games. He brushed his dark brown hair back to stop it from falling into his eyes. Dark blue eyes gleamed with amusement as he won the game again. He yawned. This was getting boring. The light of plot falls on a particular boy with chin length blond hair with long bangs extending to his eyes. His name, as you have probably guessed already, is Mello.
Mello had a bet with a Gryffindor of his year, as to who could eat the most chocolate off the table. By the looks of it, Mello was winning. How much chocolate could a man eat? Or sweets for that matter, Light thought looking at Ryuzaki.
"How don't you get fat from eating so many sweets?" Misa, who had suddenly appeared beside him, asked.
Ryuzaki paused his invasion of the dessert and replied, "If you use your head, you won't get fat even if you eat sweets."
With that he went back to his strawberry cake, and Misa looked blankly at him and shook her head. She suddenly fell full and got up, not interested to stick around. Especially when some guys were looking at her in a really uncomfortable manner.
Three tables across, the other Gryffindor had passed out and Mello was grinning in victory, even though he felt faint himself. Excusing himself from the table, he went out of the hall, headed for the washrooms. His lanky frame was stumbling a bit, face a bit pale. Misa was right behind him. She planned to go to the Moaning Myrtle's washroom, to keep her company after she had talked to her kindly when she had her heart broken by Light. Not that it was his fault, but nevertheless she had been incredibly upset.
So, they were walking up the stairs, not really bothering with each other, each concentrated on their own tasks. Misa suddenly heard a sound, a really faint whisper.
"Blood...I want blood."
Jumping, she looked at Mello who was in front of her. Did he speak? Was he a vampire or something? She didn't really think so, but guessed that it wouldn't really hurt to ask.
"Did you say something about blood?"
He paused and gave her a very strange look. She recoiled from the chocolate smeared across his cheek. He frowned.
"No, I didn't, you must be hearing things."
She shrugged, perfectly knowing that in fact, she wasn't hearing things. The mystery of the voice stuck with her, even though she told herself that it was nothing important. They lapsed into silence again. However, the scene they would soon see was something neither of them had accounted for.
A shrill scream attracted Light's attention while going out of the Great Hall. Ryuzaki, who had heard it too, rushed to the spot, Light in tow to see the sickening sight in front of them. Misa had been the one to scream, she was standing there, her mouth agape in shock.
Mello was gazing blankly at wall.
Ominous words were written on it in red paint.
"THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. THOSE WHO DEFY THE HEIR OF SLYTHERIN WOULD BE PUNISHED."
Mrs. Norris was hanging from the torch bracket in the flooded area. The teachers rushed to the place as well, followed by the ever-curious students. The shock of the entire thing made them stand rooted to the spot when Argus Filch came in. His howl of anguish broke everyone from their reverie and the teachers began escorting the students away from the place.
Ryuzaki didn't move, nor did Light. Mello swayed on his feet, looking sick due to having consumed half his weight worth of chocolates. Or maybe it was the scene. Or maybe it was both. Whatever it was, he bolted upstairs the moment everyone's attention had been diverted. Near crinkled his nose, but stayed there, intrigued. Matt went to look for Mello. Misa had snapped from her shock and leant against a wall, winded. She looked really ticked off as to who would treat a cat this way.
Dumbledore spoke softly, "Would Mr. Hideki, Miss Amane and Mr. Yagami please follow me to my office?"
"No need, Albus, my office is close by. You can hold the interrogation there," Moody offered, one eye rotating like a top.
"Thank you, Alastor," Dumbledore said, sweeping off to the office, followed by a frowning Ryuzaki, a really ticked off Misa and Light, a sobbing Filch who was holding Mrs. Norris, a stern Professor McGonagall and a glaring Moody.
Professor Slughorn would be the first to admit that he wasn't a brave man. He had been there during the first opening of the Chamber. Now, seeing it happen all over again was enough to make the poor man bolt and lock himself up in his office. This was one of the reasons why he hadn't wanted to return to Hogwarts. The shadow of Lord Voldemort would follow everyone wherever they went.
"What is it, Albus?" Minerva questioned softly, seeing the older wizard's expression after explaining that Mrs. Norris wasn't dead, she had been merely Petrified.
"The Chamber Of Secrets is open again," he announced in a grim voice.
The varied reactions of the scene was quite interesting. It ranged from a really excited Ryuzaki to a particularly upset Filch, whose sniffles could be still heard.
Light didn't know whether to be interested in the new challenge or to be wary and take precautions so that Dumbledore wouldn't think that he was the infamous Heir Of Slytherin. Everyone ignored Misa, whose eyes were narrowed. She had been thinking about the voice she had heard from earlier. Near was building a card house in the Room Of Requirements, thinking about the case as well.
"If I may, Professor, then could I have a free reign over the scene today?" Ryuzaki asked in the politest voice he could muster. "I would be glad if Light-kun accompanied me," he added in Japanese.
Light shrugged. He had memorised the books by heart and didn't really have much to do. Besides, the prospect sounded exciting, sort of, even though the entire situation was morbid.
Dumbledore gave his assent to them and Ryuzaki smiled and exited the office, followed by Light. The latter let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding. They went to the scene in silence, occupied in their own thoughts of the situation.
Ryuzaki suddenly conjured a tape measure. Light realised that he was trying to gain an approximation of the height. People generally tended to write things on the wall at their eye level.
"Six feet, a particularly long nail on the index finger," Ryuzaki said, before turning to Light, "What are your deductions on the case?"
Light licked his lips and began, "We cannot confirm the gender too well, however since it is in front of the girl's bathroom, we can assume that it was a girl. The culprit wasn't present at the feast, she couldn't have apparated because it is Hogwarts. The water is coming from the bathroom, and it pools here, removing most tracks, but we can see some muddy footsteps on the floor, due to the shoe being wet."
Ryuzaki smiled and opened the door. Light's eyes fell on the floor, which had very slight traces of mud.
He continued, "The culprit needed the bathroom for something, possibly because the weapon was hidden here. If it had been dry, the footprints would have been a bit useful, but nevertheless, we can assume that the entire thing has happened from the bathroom."
Ryuzaki was going to say something when Moaning Myrtle's sobs distracted him. She had risen, shrieking.
"WHO ARE YOU ALL??? HAVE YOU COME HERE TO ANNOY ME AND HURL INSULTS AT ME TOO?"
They blankly gazed at her. Ryuzaki recovered and said, "No, we haven't. I see no reason to insult such a beautiful girl like you, Elizabeth. In fact.. we would be glad if you would tell us if you saw anything unusual here. We would be really gratified."
He said it with such brilliant acting that Myrtle melted and said, "Thanks...that Peeves was really saying awful things about me. I got really upset and flew here. I had been crying here, until you found me. I think I heard some slithering sounds, but that was it."
Ryuzaki smiled at her.
"Thanks a lot, my lady."
Myrtle beamed as he closed the door. He dropped the nice act pretty soon.
"So, basically it is a snake, which can be the explanation of the slithering sounds. If my research is accurate, then it IS a snake. The last time the Chamber was opened, roosters had been killed and many people had been petrified. I just need some more proof," Ryuzaki trailed off, looking at the writing again.
Light was in deep thought. It made sense that the creature was a snake, but they were no closer to finding the one who was unleashing the creature upon them. Until they found them, the mystery would be incomplete. He had completely zoned out and therefore jumped and slipped when Ryuzaki spoke, almost hitting his head on the floor.
He groaned and stood up. Ryuzaki sighed.
"I guess we will need you to go for a change of clothes. And we can put this on hold for a while. Overthinking without clues wouldn't be helpful in any regard."
Light nodded, looking at his now soaked robe with distaste. He should really learn how to not zone out.
What neither of them didn't notice was Misa, who had been listening to every single word that they spoke.
Her face was grim.
