chapter seven year one- muggles
Sirius was sleeping in class more than usual today. He got lost on the way back from the hospital wing after helping Remus and by the time he got back his mind was racing so much he could barely sleep.
Why did Madam Pomfrey look like she knew Remus? And why wasn't Remus in class today? He didn't look like he hit his head that hard, unless he had something else wrong. Maybe he was just skipping, Sirius would do the same if he was being honest.
"And that is how the Goblins planned the second big battle in the war." Professor Binns droned on. Sirius looked at James, who was out cold. Instead of listening to the material on the rare occasion he was wide awake in this class--having just woken up from a long nap that took up most of the period--he looked around the room. Peter was trying to pay attention but clearly struggling, on the contrary Lily was furiously taking notes and seemed to be interesting in the magical history they were learning. He supposes James, Peter, and him weren't because they grew up magic, but that didn't mean nobody was interested. Although he didn't know if Lily was muggleborn, nor did he really care. Unlike his family, blood status didn't matter the slightest to Sirius.
Next to Lily was Severus, who Sirius promptly looked away from, and in front of her were two girls she seemed to always be with. One of them was clearly listening, looking up every once and awhile, but doodling on her paper instead of taking notes. The other was also looking around the room. Sirius found himself caught looking as the light-haired girl made eye contact with him. She motioned hanging herself, which he laughed quietly at. She then threw her head back and closed her eyes. She was definitely very different from Lily.
"For homework I want each of you to write a page on the effect of the goblin wars on modern developments." Finally, this was the last class of the day. He whacked James on the head, causing the boy to arise with a start.
"Oi James, wanna come with me to the hospital wing to check on Remus?"
"Yeah sure, Pete come on." They walked in the opposite direction from the crowd, with James rubbing his eyes.
Sirius remembered the way this time, so he led next to James. "Do any of you know what Binns was talking about? I was out cold," James asked laughing. James wasn't really the sleeping in class type, more the type to succeed to the annoyance of his classmates. Sirius only really slept in Potions and History of Magic. Potions, because it was both his parents favorite class and that left a sour taste in his mouth, and History of Magic because it was History of Magic. But he supposed that James already knew about the goblin wars same as every other kid raised with magic.
"Yeah, he was talking about the different major events of the Goblin Wars," Peter said, "Easy stuff." Peter did not commonly say things were easy, in fact he seemed to complain often about the difficulty of his classes as if they weren't all taking the same ones.
They reached the hospital wing and James knocked on the large wooden doors. Madam Pomfrey opened it. "Ah, here to see your friend are you?"
"Yes, Remus Lupin."
"I know, I know, right over there." She gestured to the only occupied bed in the room, where Remus sat. Only he hadn't looked as they'd expected. His eyes were sunken in more and he had a bandage on his arm.
"What the bloody hell happened to him?" James blurted out, "Sirius, I thought you said he just hit his head a bit?"
"He did!"
Madam Pomfrey seemed to hear this, and chimed in. "Yes, most unfortunate that Mr. Lupin's concussion proved worse than he realized. Last night he tried to get up and fell flat on the hard ground."
"Blimey, you doing okay, mate?" James said genuinely, as the three boys walked over to Remus' bed.
"Yeah, feeling better than a few hours ago." Remus sat up slightly, looking worn out but oddly happy.
"You reckon you'll be back tonight? We miss your music, and I get bored with James and Sirius' fooling without you being there to roll your eyes." Remus laughed, but seemed to regret it, clutching his ribs. It got quiet.
"Yeah, I'll be back. Just gotta get cleared from Madam Pomfrey."
"Do you want us to stay with you?" James said, moving closer to the bed-ridden boy.
"Oh no I wouldn't want you to waste your time--"
"Nonsense," James interrupted, "It's just study hall."
Peter looked awkward. "I actually should go to study hall, I'm having a lot of trouble in potions." James made an annoyed noise. "Sorry, Remus. I was gonna ask that girl in our house with the red hair for help, she's really good at potions and offered already."
James' face perked up. "I can go with you," he said a little too quickly.
Sirius looked at him with a mix of amusement and annoyance. "Why the change of heart, Jamie?" Remus tried not to laugh, attempting to spare his ribs.
"Shut up, Sirius."
"You better not dilly dally, I'd miss you too much." Sirius leaned mockingly into James, who pushed him.
"Come off it, let's go Pete."
"Have fun snogging your new girlfriend!" Sirius called, to which James flipped him the bird.
"May I remind you that you are supposed to be refined young wizards?" Called Madam Pomfrey to an already departed James. "The students just get crazier and crazier every year." She turned to look at Sirius. "Mr. Black, if you could refrain from making Mr. Lupin laugh and make sure he doesn't get up, please, I'm afraid I have somewhere to be." Sirius nodded and watched the matron leave with a smile.
Sirius looked back at Remus and chuckled. "Potter is so clueless. That girl will tear him apart, I'm telling you. I've seen her every time he makes a joke in class, rolling her eyes or tutting."
"Maybe he likes the goody type." Sirius didn't have much experience on the topic of girls, having never liked one before and being a first year, but of course he made a comment anyways.
"Not me, any girl I dated would have to appreciate my amazing sense of humor." He exaggerated a smile, making Remus laugh. "Oh no, I'm sorry."
"S'okay don't worry. I'd rather laugh and have it hurt than sit here in utter boredom. Madam Pomfrey's great but she's pretty insistent on me not doing much of anything." Sirius wanted to question why she was so concerned about him, since he had just fallen a few times, but decided against it.
As the two boys waited for either Pomfrey or their friends to come back, they played with the playing cards Sirius had brought from home. The face cards didn't pop out of the page like Professor Bletchley's did, but they did move and speak. In fact, they were rather judgmental of the boy's moves.
"Don't put me down, lad! The ace would be a much better bet!" Remus rolled his eyes and played the card anyways.
"I'm getting sick of these cards yapping," Sirius muttered.
"I think I have some muggle ones in my bag, if you wanna go get them."
"What's the difference?" Sirius knew close to nothing about muggles, let alone what playing cards they used.
"Well, they don't talk." Sirius' eyes widened.
"Why not?"
"Muggle pictures aren't cognizant, they just stay still."
"Really? Surely not paintings though, right?"
"Nope, paintings too."
This utterly shocked Sirius. He wondered just how much of these differences he didn't know. "What else is different?" Remus smiled.
"Well, there are two main types of muggles: sharks and jets. And they hate each other, so every night they all go out and dance battle until one side forfeits. It's actually caused a lot of deaths."
"Wow, that's mental. How do muggles kill?"
"They have these things called weapons that they pull out while singing and dancing, and use those." Sirius was shocked to hear this. Muggle life sounded so impossibly different, he was glad he was a wizard. "You know what else?"
"What?"
"None of this is true."
Sirius stared at him. "What?" He repeated.
"None of that is true, it's from a movie."
Sirius' jaw fell open and sat in silence. "What's a movie?" They stated at each other until Remus burst into loud laughter, completely ignoring the pain it brought. "What did I say?" Remus simply kept laughing, earning him a smack on the shoulder from Sirius. "You bloody git! I really believed you!"
"That's why it's funny!" Chuckled Remus. If Remus wasn't in a hospital bed, Sirius would have hit the laughing boy again.
Sirius fought to keep himself from laughing, but couldn't stop the smile that crept onto his face. Remus hadn't made any jokes like this with him, he thought he and James were the only true pranksters in the school.
As if they could read his thoughts, James and Peter burst into the room at that moment. Sirius looked up at them and Remus quieted his laughing. The two boys who had just entered looked between them in a confused manner.
Sirius spoke up. "James, what's a movie?"
