"Luke?! Luke! Get- get down here, now!" Evan's panicked voice rings out from downstairs, loud enough to make Luke pull his face out of the pillow he had buried it in. He groans to himself, unhappy with Evan interrupting his precious nap time.
"What happened, honey? Everything alright down here?" Luke rubs his eyes tiredly as he walks into the living room, where Evan is standing by the couch with a frustrated expression on his face. When he sees the look on Evan's face, Luke tenses up with worry.
"No! Everything is not alright! What the fuck is this?!" Evan points at a pile of fluff on their couch. "Does this look alright to you, Luke?"
Luke moves closer, and crouches down besides the pile. Upon closer inspection, the pile of fluff is actually three kittens, they couldn't have been more than two or three months old. Three cute, tiny little kitties who, mind you, look to be perfectly alright in Luke's opinion.
"I mean, they look pretty alright to me," Luke announces. He reaches out to pet one, smiling as the tiny orange tabby purrs and leans into the touch.
Evan's exasperated groan makes Luke turn back to him, raising an eyebrow. Evan takes one look at Luke's confusion, and stomps his foot. "How do you not see the problem here?!"
"What's the problem here, then, Evan?" Luke sits on the couch besides the kittens, giving Evan his full attention.
"Why the fuck are these kittens here in the first place?! Where did you find them? Why would you bring them home?!" Evan gestures wildly towards them, now looking like he was ready to slap Luke silly at any given second.
It takes Luke a few seconds to process Evan's remarks, trying to think back to last night when he and Jonathan had gone out to a bar together. He gives a casual shrug as he remembers the story of how he got the three kittens. "Uh, basically me and Del went drinking and found them when we were walkin' along the streets," he admits. "And since it was cold out I brought the babies home."
Evan gives Luke a bewildered look before sighing and rubbing his temples in frustration. "I just... Luke... Baby, why? Why?"
Luke hangs his head in shame, beginning to feel like a child who got caught with his hands still in the cookie jar. He quietly pets the smallest of the kittens, a tiny black cat who's obviously a runt of sorts. Luke could only hope that Evan would let them stay.
"You didn't check to see if they had collars or anything? Luke, what if they have owners?! Why didn't you tell me anything before bringing them home? What if one of them peed on the couch? What would we have done then, Luke? We just got this couch!" Evan's pacing back and forth now, and it's beginning to become evident to Luke that there's something he's missing here.
"Well, if anyone let these tiny things out in this snowy-ass weather, I'd say they're not fit to own these cutie pies. And besides, they seem trained. I mean, they didn't pee on the couch so I see no reason to worry about it." Luke shrugs nonchalantly.
"Okay but... This is the third time this month Luke! We can't keep taking in animals! Please, please just warn me next time you bring something home," Evan sighs. "Now we gotta go buy more cat stuff, as if we didn't already have enough with our own cats."
Luke's eyes widen as he stands up, three squirming, purring little kitties in his arms. He grins excitedly, watching as Evan goes to get his shoes and wallet. "We're seriously keeping them? You're- you're actually letting these lil' babies stay?"
Evan glances at Luke, a fond smile on his face. "Yeah. I mean, they're cute and I don't think either of us wanna get rid of them. They just scared me, is all. I thought one of our cats gave birth," he says jokingly. "Come on, put them down, and let's go out and get them some food."
Luke sets the kittens down on the couch, quickly running to grab his shoes. He bolts out the door after Evan, sliding into the car besides him.
When they come back, carrying bags full of food and toys for their new pets, they're both delighted when they're greeted with three kittens, their two older cats both watching from afar.
Luke sets the bags down and picks one up, handing it to Evan. "See? Look at the little guy. He likes you!" He can't help the smile that forms on his face as the kitten meows loudly, nuzzling Evan's hand happily.
Evan stares at the kitten for a moment, before smiling along with it. He laughs softly, and begins to pet it. "They're so cute. They really are."
Luke hums in agreement, scooping up the other two and leading them into their bedroom. "Yeah. I'm gonna go take care of all our kitties over here, okay? You put the stuff away."
"Yeah, sure," Evan says, voice getting further and further away as Luke goes upstairs.
Luke gladly flops onto the bed, sighing contently as he sinks into the plush, soft blankets. He lays there for a while, mindlessly petting and rubbing their cats that came to lay with him.
Next thing he knows, though, Luke is being awoken once more by Evan, who is standing above the bed with his arms crossed and a mock glare on his face. "Did you really ditch me with the bags of cat stuff just to come take a nap?"
Luke thinks it over before nodding, having no shame in his actions. "I'm tired, Evan, honey. Come nap with me," he whines, tugging at Evan's shirt. "The cats miss their daddy too, so come on. We can be a happy cat family in bed."
Evan rolls his eyes and gives in, laying next to Luke. "I thought you would've been the father," Evan says thoughtfully, shifting so his head was on Luke's chest. "I mean, you're probably the manliest between the two of us."
Luke laughs, partially from Evan's statement and also because of the way all their cats had curled up together, in one big ball of fur. "You're the one who kills the spiders, though. Clearly you've got more balls than me. Plus you're the one who does all the adult stuff."
Evan snickers quietly, giving a nod in agreement. "True, true. But you're a better cook. And you've got the super nice beard. Everyone knows manly people have beards."
"It is pretty sexy, yeah," Luke chuckles, stroking his beard. "You love it, c'mon baby. Be honest with yourself."
Evan moves so he's besides Luke and kisses his cheek. "Yeah, I do love it. Almost as much as I love you."
"You know, that was cheesy as fuck. I see what you did there, baby. And I love it. I love you, too." Luke slides his hand down to grab Evan's, giving it a light squeeze.
Evan smiles and snuggles up into Luke's side, wrapping his arms around him. Luke takes the chance to lean into Evan's embrace, closing his eyes and relaxing.
"We are such losers," Evan mumbles into Luke's shirt. "We're two gays with five cats and all we do is play video games all day. We need a life."
Luke chuckles again, kissing the top of Evan's head lovingly. "I do have a life. You're my life, you know that?"
"Dude..." Evan looks up at him, a playful glint in his eyes. "Did you really just say that?"
"Yeah, I did, I did. It's completely true, though," Luke insists. He pecks Evan on the lips and then leans back into the pillows, smiling happily.
"Well... You're my life too, if it helps any." Evan smiles slightly, fingers playing with the hem of his shirt. "I think you need a nap, though. You look tired. Close your eyes, Luke. I'll even nap with you."
Luke does as told, and they lay in a comfortable silence together in the bed. It's not long before he drifts back off to sleep, with his boyfriend cuddled up to his side.
