Something There/Human Again
(Eventually, they make their way back to the castle. Charlie helps Michael to his chair. He holds one arm painfully. Marla, Carlton, and Lamar enter. Lamar carries a bowl and cloth to wash Michael's wounds. Marla pours steaming water into the bowl. Charlie dips a clean cloth into the hot water and wrings it out. She reaches for Michael's wounded arm. But he growls and pulls away.)
Charlie: Let me see. Don't do that!
(She reaches for him again, but he won't let her touch his arm.)
Just hold still.
(She gently dabs at the wound. He cringes and howls painfully.)
Michael: OW! That hurts!
Charlie: If you'd hold still, it wouldn't hurt as much.
Michael: If you hadn't run away, this wouldn't have happened.
Charlie: If you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!
Michael: Well, you shouldn't have been in the West Wing!
Charlie: And you should learn to control your temper!
(He doesn't have an answer for that. They glare at each other in a silent battle of wills. Michael looks to Marla and Carlton, who avert their eyes. Charlie dips the cloth in hot water again and wrings it out.)
Now hold still, this may sting a little.
(She dabs gently at the wound on his arm. He winces but doesn't pull away.)
Charlie: By the way...thank you for saving my life.
Michael: You're welcome.
Marla: Well, that's more like it. I knew they could get along if they tried.
Carlton: So the ice is broken...at last.
Lamar: And not a moment too soon either. Have you taken a good look at the rose lately? It's losing petals at an alarming rate!
Marla: Not to mention the fact that I can hardly bend over at all anymore.
Carlton: Clearly, it's time for us to give them a little push. A nice romantic way to draw them closer together.
Marla: I have just the thing!
(To Michael and Charlie)
How about we warm you two up with a nice bowl of soup?
(Carlton and Lamar look at each other.)
Carlton and Lamar: Soup?
Marla: Trust me.
(Marla, Carlton, Michael, and Lamar huddle. A small table tracks on. Jason sits on top.)
[Charlie]
There's something sweet
And almost kind
But he was mean
And he was coarse and unrefined
But now he's dear and so unsure
I wonder why I didn't see it there before
(Marla indicates the chair to Michael. He lifts the chair as Charlie crosses to it. He clumsily slides it in beneath her. She falls into the chair. Michael crosses to his chair and perches, unable to sit. Charlie raises her bowl...Michael follows suit.)
Jason: Cheers!
Marla: Come along, dearie. Let's get you out of those wet things.
(Marla leads Charlie off. As they go, Charlie looks back and indicates that he should wipe his mouth.)
[Michael]
She glanced this way, I thought I saw
And when we touched she didn't shudder at my paw
No, it can't be...I'll just ignore
But then she's never looked at me that way before
(To Lamar and Carlton who approach)
When she smiles at me, I get all choked up. My heart starts pounding and I can't breathe!
Lamar: Good!
Michael: That's good?
Carlton: Excellent!
Michael: I've never felt this way about anyone. I want to give her something, but what?
Lamar: Well, there's the usual things: flowers, chocolates, promises you don't intend to keep.
Carlton: No,no. This is no ordinary girl. It has to be something very special. Something that sparks her interest...something like..
(He remembers)
Aaah!
(Carlton whispers into Michael's ear. He draws back skeptically.)
Michael: What? Are you sure? Well...
(Charlie comes back wearing a purple t-shirt, a blue jacket, light blue jeans, and a pair of black combat boots.)
(Lamar clears his throat, and bows in Charlie's direction. Carlton and Michael look in her direction.)
Carlton: Say something about the outfit.
Michael: It's different.
Carlton: A compliment!
Michael: Oh. What a nice outfit.
Charlie: Thank you!
Michael: Uh...Charlie...I uh...have something to show you.
(He leads her down a long hallway.)
But first you have to close your eyes. It's a surprise.
(Charlie closes her eyes.)
Carlton: Get the girl!
(Michael opens the door. He leads Charlie in. He draws back the curtains to let the light in.)
Charlie: Can I open them?
Michael: All right...now!
(Charlie opens her eyes and gasps with wonder.)
Castle library ^
Charlie: I can't believe it! I've never seen so many books in my whole life!
Michael: You like it?
Charlie: It's wonderful!
Michael: Then, it's yours!
(Charlie runs to look at the books. She dashes from stack to stack, giddy with delight.)
[Charlie]
New and a bit alarming
Who'd ever thought that this could be
True that he's no Prince Charming
But there's something in him
That I simply didn't see
(Charlie shows Michael a book.)
This is one of my favorites. King Arthur. Have you ever read it?
Michael: No.
Charlie: Then you don't know what you're missing. I'd love to read it again. Wait! You can read it first.
Michael: That's all right.
Charlie: No, really...you read it.
Michael: No, you.
Charlie: No, you.
Michael: No! I can't!
Charlie: You never learned to read?
Michael: Only a little and long ago.
Charlie: Well, it just so happens, this is the perfect book to read aloud. Come here, sit by me.
(They sit down to read. Carlton, Lamar, and Marla enter. Marla pushes her tea cart with Jason.)
[Carlton]
Well, who'd have thought
[Marla]
Well, bless my soul
[Lamar]
Well, who'd have known
[Marla]
Well, who indeed
[Carlton]
And who'd have guessed
They'd come together on their own?
[Marla]
It's so peculiar
[Marla, Carlton, and Lamar]
We'll wait and see, a few days more
There may be something there that
Wasn't there before
[Lamar]
Perhaps there's something there that
Wasn't there before
Jason: What?
[Marla]
There may be something there that
Wasn't there before
Jason: What's there, Marla?
Marla: Shh. I'll tell you when you're older. Come along, let's give them some privacy.
Jason: Marla?
Marla: Yes, Jason?
Jason: Will I ever get to be a boy again?
Marla: I hope so.
Jason: When will I know?
Marla: Soon, if it's to be, it will be very soon now. Come along, Jason.
(They exit.)
Charlie: "Knowing not that this was indeed the legendary sword called Excalibur, Arthur tried to pull it from the stone. He tried once, to no avail. He tried a second time, but still he could not pull it out. Then, for the third time, Arthur drew forth the sword..."
Michael: So that must mean he's the king!
Charlie: Wait and see.
Michael: I never knew books could do that.
Charlie: Do what?
Michael: Take me away from this place and make me forget...for a little while.
Charlie: Forget?
Michael: Who I...what I am.
(Charlie looks at him. He's touched her heart.)
Charlie: We have something in common, you know.
Michael: What?
Charlie: In the town where I come from, the people think I'm odd.
Michael: You?
(Michael was confused as to how someone as beautiful and intelligent as Charlie could be considered odd.)
Charlie: So I know how it feels to be...different. And I know how lonely that can be.
(Their eyes meet. A bond has formed between them.)
Charlie: "For the third time, Arthur drew forth the sword. And there arose from the people a great shout... "Arthur is king!"
Michael: Told you so.
(Carlton enters and watches Charlie and Michael in the library. Marla and Jason enter.)
Marla: They're still in there?
Carlton: Yes, and so far, he has been a perfect gentleman.
Jason: You know what, Marla? I have a funny feeling inside. I don't know what it is, but it makes me feel kind of bubbly.
Marla: It's hope, Jason. I've been feeling it too.
Carlton: Ah oui...my little friend, the day we have waited for may be at hand!
Marla: If only that were true, Carlton.
Carlton: Ah, human again.
Marla: Human again.
Carlton: Yes. Think what that means!
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
[Carlton]
I'll be cooking again
Be good-looking again
With a mademoiselle on each arm
When I'm human again
Only human again!
Poised and polished
And gleaming with charm
I'll be courting again
Chic and sporting again
[Marla]
Which should cause several husbands alarm
[Jason]
I'll hop down off this shelf
[Carlton]
And toute suite, be myself
[Jason]
I can't wait to be human again
[Jessica, Marla, and Circus Baby]
When we're human again
Only human again
When we're knick-knacks and whatnots no more
[Jason]
Little push, little shove
They could, whoosh, fall in love!
[Jessica]
Ah, dear, won't it all be top drawer?
I'll wear lipstick and rouge
And I won't be so huge
Why, I'll easily fit through that door
I'll exude savoir-faire
I'll wear gowns, I'll have hair
It's my prayer to be human again!
[Lamar]
When I'm human again
Only human again
When the world once more starts making sense
I'll unwind for a change
[Carlton]
Really, that'd be strange
[Lamar]
Can I help it if I'm t-t-tense?
In a shack by the sea
I'll sit back sipping tea
Let my early retirement commence
Far from fools made of wax
I'll get down to brass tacks and relax
[All Objects]
When I'm human again!
So sweep the dust from the floor
Let's let some light in the room
I can feel, I can tell
Someone might break the spell
Any day now...
[Carlton]
Shine up the brass on the door
[Circus Baby]
Alert the dustpail and broom
[All Objects]
If it all goes as planned
Our time may be at hand
Any day now!
[Marla, Dustpail, and Eggtimer]
Open the shutters
And let in some air
[Marla]
Put these here and put those over there
[All]
Sweep up the years of sadness and tears
And throw them away!
(Meanwhile, in the library, Charlie finishes reading the book to Michael.)
Charlie: "...When Guinevere heard that Arthur was slain, she stole away to a convent. And no one could ever make her smile again."
(She closes the book.)
Charlie: That's the end.
Michael: What a beautiful story.
Charlie: I knew you'd like it. I'd like to ask you for something.
Michael: What's that?
Charlie: A second chance. Would you have dinner with me tonight?
Michael: Dinner? Me? With you? That'd be...I mean...OH YES!
(Charlie picks out another book to read with Michael.)
[All Objects]
When we're human again
Only human again
When the girl finally sets us all free
Cheeks a-bloomin' again
We're assumin' again
We'll resume our long lost joy of life
We'll be playin' again
Holidayin' again
And we're prayin' it's A.S.A.P.
When we cast off this pall
We'll stand straight, we'll walk tall
When we're all that we were
Thanks to him, thanks to her
Coming closer and closer and
Closer and closer and...
We'll be dancing again!
We'll be twirling again!
We'll be whirling around with such ease
When we're human again
Only human again
We'll go waltzing those old one-two-three's
We'll be floating again
We'll be gliding again
Stepping, striding,
As fine as you please
Like a real human does
I'll be all that I was
On that glorious morn
When we're finally reborn
And we're all of us human again!
