Chapter 2: After the Performance
At the end of the performance the fans line up for the idol merch signing event. Only exclusively at this show do fans get specially signed shirts for attending the concert and purchasing a shirt. In the line was a guy with dark purple hair, his eyes shined bright red, and he was eager to finally get his favorite idol Yui to sign his shirt. Thirty minutes passed, it's finally his turn! He is finally able to get the signature of the idol he dearly loves so much! And like any other die hard fans, he is super excited for this extremely memorable occasion. Hell, he might never even wash the shirt after this! He wants her scent to remain on the piece of garment forever. He is someone people would call obsessive, having Yui as his phone and laptop wallpaper and her voice as his alarm sound. He has had quite a hard life so Yui is like a ray of bright light to his bleak dark world. He feels like no one else could care about him like Yui does. Nobody else can understands him better that Yui does. Yui is the love of his life although they have never spoken to each other, although they have never met eyes, or interacted in a casual manner. None of those normal things really matters to Ryo's delusional mind. He can live forever in his fantasies of being with Yui. Because in his mind they can be together forever. In his mind, there is a broad world consisting of only him and Yui and them alone. For that brief moment he is in his world he doesn't have to feel pain. Because all he can see is his lover's warm embrace, her smile, her voice, the way she caresses him.
None of these things are real scenarios of course. In the real world, Ryo is a mere stranger to Yui. He is just a fan to her, a tool for her own money making scheme. He is just one of her hard working fans building her up, providing her with the life she is living. They are in such different world that there is seemingly no way they would ever collide. This is even more apparent in their first ever encounter. Facing his idol, he could only stutter in a soft voice: "Hey, Yui-san, I have been a fan of you since I heard your first song. I'm your number one fan! I know everything about you - your sign, your birthday, your past magazines, I have memorised it all! I have always been excited to meet you face to face. I am one of your biggest donaters on your fan site! D-do you remember me? I am a-always so blessed to see you on stage! Y-you're amazing Yui!"
Yui: "Oh, hmmmm! Are you ... Suzuki? Ah, I know! It's Ryo kun right?" Yui hesitated as she tried to recall who was standing before her. This is one of her generous sponsors. She occasionally sees his name pop up at the top of the monthly donation leader boards. Sometimes he sends her dozens of fan mails hoping that she will notice him. Nothing more than an inconvenience that she has to endure. He is just another nuisance she has to depend on in this parasocial hell paradise.
Ryo: "God! You remembered!" Ryo knew how hectic an idol's schedule must be so for her to remember him must mean he holds some kind of significance to her. More importantly, this signified to him that he meant something to her. This meant that he existed in her world, and in the moment their worlds collided.
Yui: "Of course, silly! Here let me sign that for you!" Of course she said that. Of course she did that. Of course. It is all an act anyways.
Ryo: "Thank you so much! I love you so much! You're a goddess! You don't understand how much this means to me!"
Yui: "Ah, it's nothing. Thank you too! Now please make space for the next person dear!! tsk. *whisper quietly* pathetic trash."
Ryo: "Yes.. huh did you say something?"
Yui: "Oh sorry pay no mind! Thinking out loud hehe! (crap...)"
Yui: "Here you go! Enjoy it, okay?"
Ryo: "Thank you! I will—forever," he promised, clutching the shirt to his chest. The scent of her lingering on the fabric was intoxicating, a reminder that she was real, if only for this fleeting moment.
As he walked away, the crowd buzzed around him, but he felt enveloped in his own world. The shirt was more than just merchandise; it was a token of their connection, however one-sided it may be. In his mind, he replayed every detail—the warmth of her smile, the softness of her voice. He was ready to dive back into his fantasies, where he and Yui could share a life filled with love and understanding, away from the pain that often surrounded him.
For Ryo, reality could wait. In his heart, he had already found his forever.
