Ella literally pulled the door off the hinges as she slammed it shut, entering the hotel room. She looked furious, yet so upset. I have barely any idea what happened but I’m already on Ella’s side.
“Oh, Ella!” I say walking over to her and giving her a hug. I expected her to push me away, but instead she leant into my hug and rested her head on my shoulder.
“Why would he do that?” She said quietly into my shoulder.
“I dunno, hun. We’ll find out. I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason!” I said, barely even believing myself.
“Perfectly good reason to get rid of the one person who knows about Barry? I punched him in the face in the first place!” Her voice was muffled by my jumper, her face was pressed into it so hard.
“You’re pregnant, El. He doesn’t want you to get caught in the crossfire!” I said, thinking it seemed like something he’d have thought of.
“Yeah, so? I’m not, like, disabled or anything!” She said, the tone of her voice making me feel a little on edge.
“I know, hun, but you do need to realise you can’t just run around tackling people when you’re like that!” She pulls away from the hug that I had forgotten we were in, it’d been so long.
“I just wanted to finish the tour, Jack. One more week was all I asked of him.” She tried to put on a brave face.
“I know, I guess he just got worried cos Barry’s been released!” I smiled at her, a weak smile got returned.
“I guess. Well, at least we can cheer him on, eh?” She seemed to grow a smile.
“Of course! Now let’s get going!” I smile back, patting her on the head as we exited the room an headed towards the Arena.
Ella stared over at the entrances when we arrived, you can never take her away from the job. She looked slightly concerned about something.
“There’s no-one guarding that door.” She pointed over at the stage door.
“It can only be opened from the inside.” I stated, only knowing this because Conor had told me before.
“And? People won’t knock and it get opened?” She said looking at every face of everyone going into the arena, trying to look out for Barry I assume.
“El, chill. Let’s just watch the show and enjoy it!” I smile, again putting my arm round her and walking in the arena with her before everyone else is allowed in. We take our seats in the VIP section and get comfy, enjoying the quiet before the storm. As soon as the arena doors open, you know the general noise from chit chat will escalate and soon you won’t be able to hear yourself! “El, I’m just gonna make a trip to the men’s, alright? Back in a tick!” I smile as I jump up and walk out of the room, into the toilets that were in pristine condition, being for VIPs. After going to the toilet, I wash my hands whilst humming to myself. A voice makes me jump from another cubicle.
“Jack?” The voice says. I don’t recognise it, but I don’t like the tone of that voice either.
“Err, no?” I say, thinking how much of an idiot I was after saying it. The cubicle opens and a familiar face greets me. Someone I knew stories of but I’d never actually had the luck of meeting.
“Jackypops, don’t be stupid! I know it’s you!” He smiled an ugly, evil smile.
“Look, I gotta get back.” I say and dart for the door, but he gets there before me and slams it shut in front of me.
“Move back, over there.” He points towards the sinks. I shake my head. “I don’t think you heard me…” He said, pulling a shiny blade from his big black baggy jumper. “Get over there.” I walked over, back towards him and quickly pressed speed dial of Ella’s number before shoving my phone back in my pocket. Please to God pick it up…
“Alright! I’m moving!” I say. I want to make sure she hears everything and knows where I am.
“So, Jack, you know who I am?” He says, picking underneath his nails with the blade.
“Barry.” I say simply.
“Well done. You know why I’m here?” He asks, concentrating on picking at his nails.
“No?” I say, unsure of whether he actually cares what I think.
“I’m here to get your brother…” He said as he looked straight into my eyes. My stomach did more than drop. I felt sick, dizzy, anxious, angry, sad… I barely knew if I could stand for much longer.
“What? Why?” I ask, in hope Ella is listening in on her phone.
“He took my girlfriend from me, got a girl to punch me in the face, got me sent to prison for a year… You know where my girlfriend is now?” I shook my head. “She’s with another man. She said she couldn’t wait a year for me…”
“I’m sorry to hear that!” I say.
“I don’t want your pity!” He spat at me, walking closer to me, blade pointed towards me.
“JACK?” Ella’s voice echoed the hall. “Jack? Where are you?” Thank God! She must have heard me. Barry covered my mouth with his hand and put the blade up to my neck.
“Keep quiet, scumbag.” He whispered into my ear.
“JACK?” Ella called again. Barry lowered the blade from my neck and held it to his side.
“Call her in!” He ordered, waving the knife in my face. “DO IT!” He said, before whispering in my ear. “Or your brother gets it.” Shit! What do I do? Call Ella? Kill Conor? Oh God!
“Ella! I’m in here! Help me!” I shouted. I heard Ella’s heavy footsteps get closer to the door. She opened the door to the men’s bathroom and Barry hid behind the door.
“Jack!” She gleamed and ran into the room, hugging me. “What the hell happened to you?” I looked past her and widened my eyes a little; enough for her to look round and see Barry standing, door now bolted next to him, holding a knife in his hand.
“Ella, Ella, Ella.” He repeated as he tapped the blade against the door of the toilet. “We meet again.” She strong in front of me as if she was protecting me from something.
“What do you want?” She hissed. I’d never heard her speak like this, she had attitude, and it was awesome!
“I want Conor dead. You?” He said, tilting his head as he smirked.
“I want you dead.” She snarled. “You wanna see who gets what they want?” She clenched her fists beside her.
“Oh, bring it on bitch!” He snarled back, readying his weapon. “This’ll be easy.”
“It wasn’t last time.” She smirked. I felt like I needed to do a dance and song like a cheerleader to support Ella, but my eyes couldn’t stop glaring at the blade he was holding. They ran at each other, Barry jabbed the knife in Ella’s direction but she smacked his hand away and punched him in the face. Again he swung the blade but she jumped out of the way of it, kicking him in the leg and making him fall to the floor. I was watching in awe, as if this was some action movie and not one of my friends fighting a guy who’s trying to kill my brother! The fight continued for what felt like forever, until Ella kicked him in the face and he fell to the floor, clutching his nose. She turned round to me.
“Jack, get out of here now and get the idiots.” It was funny how I knew who she was talking about, and seemed funnier that she was still making jokes while in this situation. I nodded and bolted for the door, but as soon as I’d unlocked it and run a few feet away I heard a scream and had to run back. There I see Ella, clutching her leg and Barry holding a bloodied knife.
“Ella!” I shout. She just waves me away.
“Go and get them!” She said as she tried to stand. “GO!” She shouted and without a second thought I bolted for the door to the stage entrance.
“Jack?” Barry’s voice said, and instinctly I turned round, only to be greeted with a thrown knife hurtling towards me. I saw it in the air, but when the agonising pain of it piercing my skin hit me, I didn’t know what had happened. I fell to the floor, clutching my stomach which now had a blade sticking out of it and panicked.
“ELLA!” I screamed as I panted heavily. The sight of blood making me feel faint, yet all I could think about was Conor and Ella. Ella ran out of the room, dragging the cut leg behind her.
“Jack!” She shouted, but immediately looked over to Barry. She ran at him, full pelt and grabbed him, pushing him through the doors so hard they locked open and chucking him down the stairs. She ran down after him, kicking and punching him on the floor, his body becoming more and more lifeless.
“Ella!” I spluttered, blood falling out of my mouth. I was really scared. Was I going to die? After everything I’ve done in my life it feels like nothing! She ran back up to me.
“Oh shit, Jack!” She said, putting pressure on the wound which I could no longer look at.
“Am I going to be ok?” I asked, but she didn’t answer, she just grabbed her phone and called for an ambulance.
“Jack, I’ll be back. Stay with me!” She said and ran down the stairs shouting and screaming for someone to help me. I felt faint and tired, very tired. I saw memories of me and Conor as babies, growing up together and being idiots together as all siblings do. The fights, the jokes, secrets… It’s all flashing before my eyes. My hearing starts to go fuzzy, I can just about hear someone calling my name. I look to the side and see Conor collapse beside me. He’s crying.
“Conor.” I say, coughing up blood.
“Jack, don’t leave me! Please? You can make it through this!” Leave you? Who said I was leaving? Ella must think I’m in a bad way. Oh God. I am going to die. Shit. Conor blinked away the tears that streamed down his face. “Jack! I love you. Please don’t leave…” His sentence turned into a blubbering mumble.
“I’m fine. Conor, I’m alright. It doesn’t even hurt!” I smiled. “I’ll be fine.” I said, though the tiredness was taking over me. He clutched at my hand but I didn’t have the strength to grab back. My eyes were so heavy and kept shutting, no matter how hard I tried to keep them open.
“Paramedics! Move away from the patient!” I heard as I shut my eyes for the last time. I’m too tired. I’m sorry guys.
