Chapter 8 - She's Crazy!
I feel like death itself as my eyes slowly open and I hear the sound of a phone ringing. I roll over to my phone and pick it up, nothing. I roll over to Conor, still asleep, and nudge him.
“Con. Your phone!” I whisper loudly in his ear. He stirs.
“I’ll get it later.” He mumbles sleepily and goes back to sleep. I roll my eyes and climb over him to his phone.
“Ben.” I acknowledge the caller as I answer the phone.
“Guys its 5am? You were meant to be here by now!” He says urgently.
“No we don’t. The gig is at 6pm. We’ll be there from midday.”
“You will be here now because I said so! You guys have caused enough issues with me so far! Pass me to Conor!” He orders.
“He’s asleep! He has a busy day later!” I say sarcastically.
“Just put him on.” I tut and hold the phone to Conor’s ear before nudging him again.
“What the hell?” Conor says, squinting from the light radiating from the phone.
“Conor? It’s Ben. It’s 5am, you’re meant to be here already!”
“Ugh, whatever. I got a couple of things to do first though…” Conor says.
“Conor, get here now!”
“FINE!” Conor shouts into the phone and presses hang up. “He can wait!” He said to me, smiling. “We have plans!” We both, sluggishly, fall out of bed and wander into the bathrooms. Conor has the ensuite and I go into the proper bathroom just next door. I jump in the shower and turn it on, but not enough and cold water suddenly covers me. I breathe in heavily and quickly turn the temperature up until the hot water is finally coming out. I quickly shower, enjoying washing my hair with coconut extract shampoo and enjoy the fragrance as it lingers in the air. Jumping out I grab my towel and wrap it round me, before towel drying my hair and spraying it with leave-in conditioner and then brushing my teeth. I dry my face and do my make-up; foundation, concealer, eye-liner, mascara and blusher. I feel the need to dress up for whatever Conor has planned, although my dressing up just means wearing a blazer instead of leather jacket… Finally finished making myself look half decent, I walk back out of the bathroom and into the bedroom, noting a figure sitting in the living room area. I stop and turn round, about to tell Conor I’m almost ready so he can stay sitting there, when Jack’s face greets me with a grin.
“What are you doing here?” I ask, pulling my towel tighter around myself and checking I was decently covered.
“Conor let me in. We were supposed to be at the arena already!”
“Yes, I know! That’s why I’m taking my sweet time!” I smile and walk into the bedroom where I get dressed quickly. I hear Conor walk in and begin a conversation with Jack, so I check I look decent and walk back into the living room area.
“You ready to go?” Conor grins at me. I look down at myself; Combat boots – check, black skinny jeans – check, stupid black top with yellow ‘SECURITY’ printed on it – check (unfortunately).
“Yeah, I’m ready! Is Jack coming too?” I ask, kind of hoping for him to say no.
“Yeah he is, if that’s alright?” Jack smiles over to me. A part of me is furious, I’ve been banned from talking to my best friends cos they’re around too much yet Jack can come everywhere with us?
“Yeah that’s fine!” I fake a smile and cheery tone. Conor nods and we all walk out of the room and swiftly down the fire exit through the back doors so no paps can follow us. Conor is driving, but he told me not to focus on where we were going too much. We arrive shortly at a florist. He tells Jack to wait in the car as we go into the florist hand in hand.
“Look, hun, I know this week hasn’t gone to plan, so I’m making sure we do this before we go to the gig.” He points around the shop. “Pick any flowers in the shop, however many you want, and we’re going to your sister’s grave before we go.” He smiles an sympathetic smile and I tear up.
“Conor, you really didn’t have to do this!” I try and hold back from crying.
“As I said before, I felt bad about forgetting, and you said you didn’t have flowers, so here we go!” He grins at me and I pull him in for a hug. I squeeze him tightly as a single tear falls from my face at hits his blue jacket.
“Thank you so much! But I can pay for-”
“I’m paying.” He interrupts quickly. “Pick whatever you want, alright?”
“Are you sure?” I question, feeling bad for using his money.
“Just do it.” He says, looking authoritarian at me. I walk around the shop, looking at all the colours and shapes and sizes of flowers and spot a bunch of pink tipped, white flowers. They looked amazing. I don’t know what it was about them but they reminded me of Alice.
“Those.” I say, flinging my pointed finger over to them.
“A perfect choice!” The shopkeeper says, picking up a bunch of them and wrapping them in paper. “Anything else?”
“Yeah, I’ll take a few of those ones. Conor said, pointing over at some blue flowers. The shopkeeper nods and again wraps them up. “Ella, take them to the car as I pay, I’ll be out in a second!” He nods to me and I grab the flowers, taking them out to the car. I sit in the car, Jack staring out of the window.
“You alright?” I ask him, looking round.
“I’m getting there. Just can’t believe that girl…” He shook his head.
“Jack, she’s an idiot. We’re in the process of getting an injunction to silence her and she’ll be gone. If I see her though, I’ll hit her for you!” He lets out a small laugh.
“Thanks, Ella. You’re a great help. Violent, but great!”
“I know!” I laugh. “You and Conor all sorted out?”
“Yeah, I think so! Sorry you had to witness that! It was something that happened a long time ago, you know, he had just got signed and got a little big-headed. Everyone was so chuffed for him though that it didn’t matter what I did, I could never impress anyone. I got to a point and snapped, spilt everything out to a girl I thought I could trust but it turned out she was a blogger. Wrote it all and made it go viral.” He shook his head.
“The past is the past though… Conor cant hate you for it if it was a mistake. There are things I cant forgive myself for that are worse than that!” I raise one eyebrow at him and he nods.
“So where are we going? What’s with the flowers?” Jack asked, and I felt a yank of my heart strings.
“To the cemetery.” I say blankly. “To my sister’s grave.”
“Oh I’m sorry to-” I didn’t let him finish.
“Don’t worry.” I half smile. Conor enters the car and nods at us both.
“Sorry, had to sign an autograph or two. Let’s get going!” He says as he starts the car, and shortly after, we get to the cemetery. I feel happy to be there, that this isn’t just another quick pop in like last time and that I can actually lay some flowers down. I, strangely cheerfully, run across the path to the top left corner of the cemetery but stop suddenly as I see someone there. Conor and Jack stop still next to me.
“What’s the problem, babe?” Conor asks, following my gaze over to a womanly figure standing there.
“She’s at my sister’s grave.” I say emotionless.
“Who is it?” Jack asks. I just shrug. We walk alongside each other towards this woman, who is bent down in front of the grave. When we were a few feet away from her, I attract her attention.
“Err, hi?” I say, and the woman looks round to me. Rage suddenly fills me and I drop the flowers on the floor and clench my fists. I go to launch myself at her but Jack and Conor hold me back. “What the fuck are you doing here?” I hiss at her.
“Ella, can I not visit my best friend’s sister’s grave?” Hannah’s evil eyes glare at me.
“Step away now, or I swear to God…” I didn’t finish the sentence, I hadn’t decided what I was going to do yet.
“Ella. Calm down please. This is a place of rest and peace.” She says, in a smug way.
“Hannah, please just leave. You’re obviously here to make a scene.” Conor asks politely.
“Conor… Conor… My love, you have no right to tell me what to do! You had your chance with me and you blew it! You picked her instead.” She said. “And Jack, don’t even start…” She looked over at him. “You were only a bridge for me to get back with Conor, but I didn’t realise he was still smitten with her. When I did I ended it. Sorry!”
“You lied to everyone!” Jack spat. “About both of us!”
“So? Do you realise how much ‘The Sun’ or ‘The Daily Star’ will pay for a story like that? Me having a violent celebrity boyfriend? Or me dating a jealous brother? Oh, by the time I’m finished I’m gonna be loaded… And you’ll be publicly humiliated.” All the time she was speaking I was fighting the tight grip of Conor and Jack holding me back, but as soon as she had said that they both loosened their grip. I ran at her, with rage in my eyes and jumped her onto the floor. The satisfying feeling of her body hitting the floor with my weight on top of her. She still smiled at me, she still glared at me evilly and I think I knew her plan. I moved my head to be beside hers and whispered at her, my lips centimetres from her ear.
“You think this is a game? I will get you and it’ll be so secretly and so quickly you wont even realise… You fuck with me and you get it, but you fuck with my friends and I will tear you limb from limb you disgusting excuse of a human being… If I ever see you here again…” I shake my head and stand up, before kicking some of the gravel and dirt over her. “Go on! Leave!” I say, nodding my head towards the exit. Hesitantly, Hannah stands up and brushes herself down before snarling at us and turning round, walking out without looking back.
“You alright?” Conor questions.
“Yeah. Something’s not right… I can tell.” I said, looking around. “She wanted me to hit her.” Jack picks the flowers up off the floor and hands them to me. I stand in front of the grave, looking down at the stone and compose myself.
“Sorry, Alice.” I say, not caring what they’re going to think of me. “I know I shouldn’t have been so harsh but she shouldn’t be here! You should have heard what she said about that day…” I shake my head. “I came back with flowers, thanks to Conor, he bought some for you too.” I place the flowers down on the grave, moving some of the dirt as I did so. However it revealed something of beige colour under the dirt. I touch the beige object, and pick it up out of the dirt. It was a voice recorder.
“What the fuck?” Jack exclaims. “Is she recording us?” I put my finger up to silence him and fiddle about with the beige machine before just chucking it on the floor and standing on it..
“I’m not sure if it was recording or if it was just a microphone type thing but I broke it anyway!”
“This is ridiculous!” Conor said angrily. “The amount of effort she’s going to so she can catch us out and dish more dirt to the papers…”
“Everything that comes out of her mouth is dirt!” I reply. “We gotta tell Ben, make whatever sentencing they’re giving harsher! She can’t be touching my sister’s grave!!” I shout.
