CHAPTER ONE
She's younger in this dream. Or at least she thinks it's a dream or maybe it's a memory in a dream because things look familiar to her. But whatever it was, it was almost blurry as if there were some fragments of it that she couldn't remember what it was.
It looks like she's around the age of ten, small and skinny. Her hand was smaller than the one that was grasping hers. She's out of its control, and it was as if she was just a watcher, and she realized the child was her.
She, well, her ten year old self, turned her head to the side to look at the women standing next to her. The women was staring down at her with her kind eyes and it was obvious that she was crying. She knows that her younger self notices, but doesn't say anything about it, not wanting to make the women more upset than she was.
The women's eyes are watery as she tries her best to hide it that she's crying in front of her daughter. They're walking in a direction, somewhere her ten year old self didn't know where, but still followed her mom despite how worried and confused she was.
Her younger self frowns, but stays silent as they walk into a crowd where she moves closer to her mother, grasping onto her hand tighter since she didn't want to get lost in the crowd. As Bella looks around the crowd she notices there are adults and some children her younger self's age and some that are not, clutching onto their parent's hands just like her younger self was.
Her younger self is suddenly pulled to a stop and her mother kneels besides her. She's sniffling, once again trying to hide the fact that she's crying. Bella, her younger self, stares at her with a frown, still clutching onto her mother's hand. Her mother places a gentle kiss on her forehead before leaning back.
" Mom, what's wrong?" her younger self finally asks and her voice startles Bella. It's so scary because it sounds exactly like her. Bella doesn't remember her younger self, but yet, here she is, ten, with her mother. She didn't even recognize her mother at first because it has been so long since she has seen her mother. " Why are there a lot of people here? Why are we here?"
What Bella thought was strange was that she didn't seem to be afraid. She just stood there, worriedly looking at her mother, waiting for her to explain and yet she doesn't completely explain.
" Bella, this is goodbye." her mother tells her, and finally fear forms on her face. " You have to go where I'm can't go with you."
Ten year old Bella's eyebrows furrows together as she stares at her mother. " Why can't you go with me? Where am I going?"
" You're going somewhere safe." her mother said. " And you'll know one day why I can't go with you."
Younger Bella continues to frown at her mother, tears starting to form in her eyes as she asked, " Will we ever see each other again?"
Her mother finally lets the tears fall. " No."
Bella could feel her heartbeat begin to quicken for some odd reason. This memory feels familiar, a similar feeling of fear floods through her and she desperately wants this to stop, to wake up from whatever this was.
Her mother shakes her head. " I'm afraid that we never will."
Bella gasps, her body shuddering as she jolts up. She first notices how quiet everything is and all she can hear is her heavy breathing and how fast her heart is beating.
She takes a deep breath as she looks around, realizing that she was in her hammock that was in the homestead, confirming that whatever that has just happened was a dream. She gets out of the hammock, not wanting anyone to see her like this because then they would ask her questions. She has kept that she was getting memories, or dreams that seemed like memories, to herself because in all honesty she doesn't know what to do or even if they are memories.
" They're just dreams." she mumbles to herself, trying to convince herself that's all that they are and as she looks around she realizes that she's the only one in the homestead and so she goes to find where everyone was.
The moment she's in the kitchen she spots Newt in the far corner and heads over to him. Frypan catches her on the way, smiling as he hands her a plate. She sent him a smile as she accepts it and then takes a seat next to Newt.
After taking another bite of his breakfast he looks over at and nods. " Good morning, Bella."
" Good morning." Bella sighs. " Why didn't Minho wake me up? I was suppose to run with him today."
Newt shrugs his shoulders. " He decided it was best for you to sleep in since you've been working a lot lately."
Bella crosses her arms. " Who does that shank think he is deciding on what I can and can't do?"
" I agree with him." Newt said as he looked away from his plate and locked eyes with her. " You were tossing and turning in your sleep last night. It just seemed like you needed rest longer." he turned back to his breakfast and picked up his fork. " If you wanna work so badly you can just work with me in the gardens."
Bella lets out an annoyed puff of air as she picks up her fork. " Fine."
After breakfast was over and they got to work. The hours went by slowly until suddenly a loud noise echoed throughout the Glade. Bella's eyes widened, glancing over to meet Newt's eyes before looking over to where the sound of the noise was coming from. She realized it was coming from the box and that meant a new Greenie had arrived.
Glancing back at Newt she then got up and quickly headed over to where the box was, seeing other Gladers heading over to it as well. She couldn't help but wonder if this one would be a girl, but she had a feeling that they weren't since everyone so far has been a boy.
Finally the whirring stopped, but the buzzing echoed. There was a few moment of silence besides the distant murmurs and she stood there in anticipation of who it would be. The box doors then slide open, the gate being the only thing that separated them from the boy.
From her place besides Newt, she saw that he was blocking the sun by holding a hand in front of his eyes and she didn't blame him. He also looked terrified, but that was normal for the Greenies that came up in the box.
She rolled her eyes as some of the Gladers started laughing at the poor boys and she wondered why they were laughing considering they've been in the same position. She watches as two boys step forward and grab the weird gate and pull it open. Gally stepped forward, jumping down until he was in the box with the Greenie, who crawled backwards, getting as far away from him as possible.
Gally only stepped toward him, grabbing him by the front of his shirt. " Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine."
Bella winces as Gally pulled the boy up, along with some help of the others, throwing the boy on the ground as if they didn't care.
" Kid looks like a slopper to me." one of the boys taunted, gaining a few laughs and she rolled her eyes.
" I could use some help in the kitchen." Frypan said as he stepped forward and grinned at the newbie.
Bella sighed as she crossed her arms. She then met the boys eyes for a moment. His gaze paused on her and she was sure he was wondering why she was the only girl there. He then turned his gaze to the walls that surrounded them and he looked around with panic.
She watched as he stood up, pushing his way past the crowd of boys and herself and took off running. " Hey, we got a runner!" Zart sarcastically said, but she couldn't help but to agree with him because this boy was indeed very fast.
The newbie then tripped, flipping over himself and face planted on the grass. A small giggle escaped her lips and she scolded herself for laughing, but it was sort of funny to see and she looked over noticing Newt was laughing along with everyone else and she sent him a small glare to which he only rolled his eyes.
Whoops echoed throughout the Glade, followed by laughs, but Bella was then silent as she watched the Greenie take in his surroundings. The terror that was on his face before had slowly went away while he slowly pushed himself to his feat. He stood as he looked around at the place.
She knew that the Gladers weren't going to do something any time soon so she pushed past Newt and the other boys, ignoring Newt calling her name as she walked over to Greenie and glared at Gally as he stepped in front of her.
" Yeah, yeah," she rolled her eyes. " I know he's suppose to go to the slammer. Calm down."
She pushed past Gally and made her way over to the Greenie. She just stopped a few inches away from him as he spun around, gasping, not expecting for her to be there. She sent him a reassuring smile as she offered her hand out for a handshake.
" I'm Bella, welcome to the Glade."
