Back in Black
Steve's POV
"Nat, on your six." I shout, fighting off a group of armed agents.
Coming into this mission, I figured there'd be a good amount of bad guys protecting the cargo. What I didn't know is that they're Hydra agents or that there's so much of their cargo.
"Cap, they're moving the shipping containers from the barge to the train." I hear Sam say in my comms.
We might actually lose this one.
I hear a roar coming down the dock and turn to see motorcycle headlights heading our way.
"Anyone have eyes on that?" I ask, looking towards it.
"Whoever it is seems to be helping, sir." Vision says. "They've already taken out seven agents."
My eyes widen in realization and I run towards the still-moving bike. As I get closer, the vehicle halts to a stop right at my feet.
"What are you doing here?" I ask, seeing the familiar black suit and half-mask that leaves her nose and mouth exposed.
"Helping." She smirks. "Duck." She says, I obey. She jumps over me and kicks an attacker in the chest before knocking him unconscious.
"Thanks." I say, staring at her breathlessly.
She just nods in response before running towards the fight.
"Steve, who is that?" I hear Bucky ask.
"Nice to finally meet you all." I hear Ally's disguised voice through my comms and can't help smirking. "I'm Shadow."
"What?! How did she..?" The others begin to drown her in questions.
"I'm a hacker, duh. Now let's send these serpents back to hell where they belong." She says, fighting off multiple agents.
I reach Natasha and pause to catch my breath. "I like her." She smirks, looking at Shadow.
I shake my head and both of us run into action. Once most of the agents are taken care of, the train begins moving with both large containments on board.
"Cap!" I hear Scott shout. "The train!"
"It's too far. Can anyone get to it?" I ask, looking around to see most of the team beside me. I see Bucky having some sort of PTSD, considering he almost died because of a train, and place a hand on his shoulder to calm his nerves.
I see a dark figure jumping back and forth from the top of Hydra's trucks, towards the train, and my heart stops.
"No." I whisper to myself.
"It's moving pretty fast but I think I can make it." Shadow's voice plays in our comms.
We watch as she jumps from the last truck.
"I made it." She says, I sigh in relief.
"Can you turn that thing around?" Bucky asks now.
"I don't think so, this engine doesn't-" She pauses. "Oh my God."
"What?" I ask, my heart pounding in my chest. "What is it?"
"Children." I hear her choking on her words. "Their cargo is children."
We all exchange looks.
"This thing is going too fast. I.. I don't think I can stop it." She says, panicking.
Before anyone else can speak, a strong wind comes from above us paired with some AC/DC music.
"Hope I didn't miss too much action." Tony says, landing beside us.
"Agent Carter's flying the jet. Let's go." He says as the jet's hatch opens and we all jump in.
Alexandra's POV
The cries of the children break my heart and stop me from focusing. I make my way to the engine room and look at the panels to find only a single red button.
"Well that can't be good." I conclude, talking to myself. I feel a tug on my leg and look down to see a little girl, maybe about three years old, clinging to me.
I feel tears welling up in my eyes as I start to have flashbacks. Being crammed in these containers, sold to other facilities, and tested on. I clench my jaw to hold back my tears and pick the small girl up.
"You're gonna be okay." I speak softly to her as she cries.
I hear a clicking noise and look outside of the small door to see a latch between the engine and the other carts. I look back down at the red button and take a deep breath. I make sure that the children are safe in the cars before securely locking the doors so they stay inside.
"Hey Cap?" I speak into my comms.
"Who's that? Why are you on our channel?" I hear Tony's voice and my heart drops. Should I say something to him too?
"I'm listening." I hear Steve say along with whispers explaining everything to Tony.
"I might be making a really stupid decision right now, but it seems like the only decision I have." I explain vaguely.
"What do you mean? What's going on?" He asks worriedly. "We're in a jet, we're coming."
"If I don't stop this train, it's no use. There's only one button up here." I sigh.
I hear him yelling at the others to take their comms out and fight my tears.
"Whatever you're thinking, don't do it." He says, his voice breaking.
"What choice do I have?" I ask, not able to hold back my tears. "I'll disconnect the carts from the engine but I need to destroy this thing. There's too much intel in here to just hand it over to the next facility."
"Ally." Steve speaks softly. I can hear him crying too now. "Please."
"I'm sorry, Steve. For everything." I begin working on the latch as my hot tears roll down my cheeks. "Tell Tony that I forgive him for everything. None of this is his fault."
"Stop talking like that." Steve says. "We're almost there just hold on."
I shake my head as my tears fall. One last tug on the cold metal separates the children from me and the engine. I stumble backwards and lock the door to contain the soon explosion.
"Alexandra." I hear Steve's stern yet scared voice.
I stare down at the red button, my heart racing. This is a good way to go. Sacrificing my life to prevent other innocent children from ending up like me.
Steve's POV
"Alexandra." I say, my heart already in my stomach. We've landed the jet at the containers to tend to the children, but I've continued down the tracks on foot.
"I'm so sorry, Steve." Her soft voice plays in my ears. "Maybe in another life."
A wave of different emotions crashes over me as my feet begin to move faster.
"Ally!" I yell, tears flowing faster.
In the distance I see a small explosion and clench my jaw. The tracks rumble but I keep running. This can't be it. It can't end this way.
I finally get to the site of the explosion to see that the train isn't completely demolished. I search through the rubble for any sign of Ally, dead or alive.
I hear beeping from the other side of the tracks and my head shoots up. Following my ears, I find a dim red light blibking from underneath scraps of metal. I quickly throw them to the side and fall to my knees at the sight.
