Ride On
Steve's POV
After landing the jet in a secluded area, Ally and I change into normal clothes--her using some of Nat's emergency clothes--before stepping into the public.
"Where exactly are we?" She asks as we walk the busy streets.
"Washington D.C. " I say, subtly checking our surroundings.
"Are the others here?" She asks, wrapping her arm around mine. My heart jumps in my chest but I do my best to stay calm.
"Not yet." We reach an apartment building and I take out a key before unlocking the door. I let Ally in first before locking the door behind us.
"Ah. The SHIELD apartments." She stifles a laugh. "Never thought someone like Captain America would choose to hide out here."
"Why not?" I raise an eyebrow as we enter my apartment.
"I never thought you'd need to hide out in the first place. You seem... Well... You can take care of yourself." She shrugs. "I'd expect someone like me to hide out here." She laughs.
We turn to look at eachother and I catch myself glancing down at her lips. She quickly looks away and lets out a soft sigh.
"I'm gonna wash up." She states before showing herself to the bathroom.
Once the door is closed, I groan and fall back on the bed. I hear my flip-phone buzzing and look at the screen to see Tony calling.
"Hello?" I ask, answering the call.
"Is she okay?" He asks, sounding worried.
"She's fine."
"Let me talk to her." He demands.
"She's in the shower." I state. "Even if she wasn't, I don't think she'd want to talk to you."
I hear Tony mumbling under his breath but just roll my eyes. "We'll be there soon. Keep your hands to yourself." He says before ending the call.
I throw my phone down on my bag and sit on the edge of the bed with my head in my hands. I hear soft crying and wincing come from the bathroom and my head shoots up.
"Ally?" I ask, knocking on the door.
The water turns off and the door opens a few seconds later to reveal a puffy-eyed Ally wrapped in a towel.
"Oh, sweetheart." I sigh, wrapping my arms around her. "Why don't you get dressed and get some rest? The others will be here soon."
She nods but pauses in her tracks. "I um.. I don't have any of my clothes."
I raise my eyebrows in realization and grab a pair of sweats and a T-shirt out of my emergency duffel bag from the jet and hand them to her.
"I'm gonna rinse off." I say, she nods.
Alexandra's POV
I carefully change into the large T-shirt and sweats that Steve gave me while he's in the shower and sit on the edge of the bed. I stare at the ground, my thoughts consuming me, until the bathroom door opens to reveal Steve with a towel wrapped around his waist. His hair is wet and unstyled, there's water droplets on his bare chest and abs. I catch myself staring and quickly look away.
"I um.. I didn't realize that I only had one pair of pjs in this bag." He says, tossing his bag to the floor.
I look up at him and my eyes widen. "Oh, sorry." I quickly slip the sweats off and toss them to him.
His cheeks turn red as he catches the pants. He turns to go back into the bathroom before re-emerging in his gray sweats.
"Is everyone staying in this room?" I ask, realizing how small it actually is.
"No." He chuckles. "Everyone's got their own room." He must realize the same thing that I did a few seconds ago. "If you want me to get a room for you I-"
"No! That's not why I was asking." I cut him off. "I don't mind the couch."
"Ally, I'm not letting you sleep on a couch. Especially not one that small." He crosses his arms. Oh my gosh, was he shirtless this whole time? I mean I guess I am wearing his only T-shirt.
"I'll be fine Steve." I chuckle at him as I plop down on the couch. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." He sighs, turning the lights off.
Tony's POV
We get to D.C. around 1 o'clock in the morning and make our way to our separate rooms. I make a detour, stopping at Steve's room, before banging on the door.
Moments later, a tired Steve swings the door open. "Tony? What the hell?"
"Where's my daughter?" I ask, trying to push past him.
"Go away." She mumbles loudly from the couch.
"Alex, c'mon." I lean against the doorway. "You're staying in my room."
"Nope." She says, popping the P sound.
"Alexandra Stark. I'm not asking." I raise my voice.
She laughs from the couch, causing Steve and I took give eachother a confused look.
"Look at you, acting like you have the privilege to call me by your last name." She scoffs. "Just leave me alone, Tony."
I feel anger and sadness fill me and huff before turning away.
---
"I just don't get it, Pep." I sigh. "I've tried being involved, I've tried buying her things. What am I doing wrong?"
"Tony," she sighs, "she's a grown woman. She's gotten through her whole life without a father. Whether you like it or not, she doesn't exactly need you. She did when she was younger, she's probably hurt deep down, but she doesn't seem like the type to forgive and forget." Pepper explains. "Sounds like someone else I know."
I hold my head in my hands. Why does she have to be so much like me?
