Just Two Words

CALIK'S POV:

I was following Miss on her malicious witch-hunt through the forest, when she suddenly veered into the trees and off the path. I dare not ask any questions, simply following with no words.

She stormed through the trees, and with every step she took, the rage in her breath grew more and more. She pushed branches and grass out of the way, leaving me to deal with them slapping back.

What felt like potentially lifetimes of trudging through sharp plant-life later, she halted. I nearly ran into her, my heart racing as I stepped casually to her side. We stood now in a small clearing, through it was still shadowed by the trees.

"M-Miss?" I said slowly, not daring to accuse her of leading us somewhere pointless.

Miss said nothing, only waving her hand at the clearing.

I did not hesitate, staring out to see what she was trying to show me.

The clearing was nothing special, except in the middle there was a section where the dirt had been dug away, but had never grown back. It seemed to have been dug probably decades ago. At the far end of the anomaly, there was a stone dug into the ground. Two words were carved into the stone.

'Laone Starling'

I looked over at Miss hesitantly. Why had she led me HERE, of all places?

I bit back any possible sarcastic responses. Now was not the time. There never was a time.

Miss walked slowly, purposefully, towards the grave. She hesitated, glaring down at the gravestone.

I followed, making sure to stand a step or two behind her when she stopped.

She held her breath for a second before speaking.

"Just... Two... Words..."

"Of course, Miss. That's all she deserved, for what she did to you."

I knew what I'd did wrong in one moment. I didn't even try to move away, just braced myself for what I knew was coming.

I'd spoken back. Indirectly, but indirectly speaking back was still speaking back.

Miss suddenly spun around, the palm of her hand connecting with my face with a loud slap. I flinched backwards, knowing that it had been coming but still being affected by it. I held my hand over my cheek and pictured the hand print that I knew was already forming.

"How dare you say that about my sister!" she hissed, twirling back around in a second and refusing to look at me.

I didn't even respond. There was nothing I could say.

I could never figure out how Miss truly felt about Laone. They were sisters, but Miss... Miss hated Laone. Miss is the one who killed Laone.

But Miss hated when someone else spoke negatively of Laone.

Miss suddenly spat on the grave, then kicked the tombstone over in just two swift movements.

She crouched low, tracing her long, thin fingers over the "Starling" written on the tombstone, which now faced upwards as it lied.

"Two words? That is MORE than you deserved, you bit--"

Miss paused, stood up to her full height, and pushed her shoulders back.

"Let's go, Calik. I've wasted enough time with this conniving liar," she waved her hand over the grave yet again.

Casting one more dirty look at the mess that she had mad, Miss started walking. Not moving my hand from my face, I followed.

Miss hated Laone.
