The Blind Beggar
The echoes of screams of all ages and genders filled my ears. I could hear the blood splattering on the walls. A warning had been issued about 20 minutes ago. It was torturous to only be able to hear, not see.
'What was it?' I found myself thinking. 'What is causing the terror?'
I could tell it--whatever it was--was getting closer to me. 'From what direction? Where do I run? Is no where safe?'
I collapsed to my knees, overwhelmed. I was going to die here. No one would help me. No one would stop. Everyone else's lives mattered so much more than mine.
I was just a blind beggar. No one wanted a blind beggar around.
Or so I thought. Someone suddenly grabbed my hand, forcing me to my feet. I couldn't tell who it was, but they seemed kind enough. Or maybe this was the thing killing everyone.
Maybe I was already dead.
"Run!" the person holding my hand said. They sounded feminine, but I couldn't tell if anyone was a girl or a boy from just their voice. They continued to hold my hand, and they ran with me, leading me through the streets and the crowds of people.
We ran towards the outsides of the town. I heard them whispering multiple times, and a person whispering back. I assumed that them and I weren't alone, and that someone close to the one holding my hand was near. I thought I heard a third voice sometimes, but I wasn't too sure.
I tripped, and flew onto the ground. I hadn't even scrambled to my feet yet. Someone familiar grabbed my both my hands again.
"Adyson!" A voice that I thought I'd heard during the whispering, and male said.
One of their hands was torn away from mine.
"No!" the person who held my hands shouted. I assumed they were Adyson, further doubling my thought the one who saved me was female.
Their other hand was torn away. I grasped hopelessly trying to find their hands again, knowing deep inside I was dead without them.
I heard a scuffling noise, like someone was fighting someone else. Or something else.
There was a scream. I thought it was mine, but I thought I heard another voice screaming too. Their scream was more terrified than mine.
Something liquid splashed onto my face. It smelled metallic and coppery. I recognized it almost instantly as blood. 'But who's blood was it?' A sharp pain in my side told me it might've been mine. I touched my side, and my hand came away wet, confirming it was definitely mine.
Someone had picked me off the ground, bridal-style. They were careful. It felt human, but I couldn't help feel worried. And suddenly we were running again. The person holding me was strong, so I guessed it was the male, but I would never see what the female looked like, so I still couldn't be sure.
The whispering never started again. Had something happened to Adyson?
They seemed to run slower now that I was in their arms, and they never spoke a word.
It seemed like we had escaped that...thing...that was chasing us.
My blood continued to drip from my side, and I felt really dizzy, probably from blood-loss.
I found it hard to keep my eyes open. I eventually stopped trying to stay awake.
I fell into the darkness...
